00:00This IPL needed one Super Over because it had given us everything, drama and everything.
00:12Hi guys and welcome to Straight Back. Once again, we're here with Mr Cricket UAE and
00:16Golf News with Anas Sajjan, Sahil our cricket expert and Gautam is joining us from India.
00:23I'm Matt Smith from Golf News and what a day. Yesterday we had a little bit of a quiet one,
00:29but today we don't know where to start. I'll quickly say hi to Anas so he can say hi to you
00:35guys. Hi Matt and hi all gorgeous people of the Golf News community. What a super Sunday but
00:42before I talk about both the matches, make sure to log on to your favorite page Golf News and
00:48predict the winner and you walk away with two beautiful jackets and three months of subscription
00:52all from Golf News. Cool, now we were just discussing before we came on air where do we
00:58start? Do we start with Chennai? Do we start with RCB? Do we start with Delhi? But I think we have
01:05to start because we literally have just come on just as they finished their first Super Over of
01:10the tournament. What a nail-biter. It was really going down to the end. What was your take on that?
01:16Delhi just got over the line. Oh yes, this IPL needed one Super Over because it had given us
01:23everything, drama and everything and to get a Super Over and you got to give credit to Delhi
01:28that they pulled it off but SRH was almost there thanks to the brilliance of Williamson
01:33but probably they might think about not standing best two in the Super Over. Might have cost them
01:39this but nonetheless it's a you know margin of thin lines and Delhi were lucky just to go through.
01:47And Gautam, obviously you watched that firsthand there. Did you think that was
01:54a mistake after because it looked like they were down and out but then they clawed it right
01:58back, they got to the Super Over. Did they make a mistake in the Super Over? Yes, I mean
02:06it's simple. You send your hardest hitters of the game. Now Ken Williamson, I mean he was
02:16really tired because his game is built around. See, he hasn't hit any sixes if I recall correctly.
02:22His game is built on placements, running his singles and those lovely boundaries that he
02:28brings about. So he was really really tired. They should have tried with you know best two and one
02:33that's it. It's a hit and miss either way. If Suchit hasn't hit that six, the match wouldn't
02:39have gone to Super Over anyway. So yes, they missed a trick there. So it's one of these damned
02:46if you do damned if you don't type occasions because we can look at it in hindsight but had
02:50Williamson just smashed a six then oh it would have been an amazing piece of genius even though
02:56he looked very tired but now it cost them, it's going to cost them two points. Possibly if it
03:02comes down to it that may be a place in the playoffs. Sahil, what do you think? Yeah, absolutely
03:08you know as if I was watching the game towards the end and you know as the Super Over came. First
03:15of all, I think Sunrisers should have won it. Let's be honest here. Three runs of two balls, come on.
03:20I didn't expect Williamson to miss that you know and then the last ball also they couldn't sneak
03:26a two but okay fine the Super Over came and you see Warner and Basto coming out. I mean I'm sorry
03:31Warner and Williamson coming out. I kept asking, shouting like oh my god why isn't Johnny Basto
03:37you should have seen the way he was batting today. Oh my god, some beautiful shots he took.
03:41He took on all the spinners but then you see Williamson and Warner. Okay, fine.
03:47Williamson played a fantastic knock. Without him, Sunrisers would have not even been there but he
03:53was tired, drained out. You could see it and you need a guy who goes bang bang in the Super Over.
03:59So I guess every fan in every fan's mouth there, this question will be there. Why didn't
04:03Johnny Basto come to bat? And Anas, obviously there's one other question that we need to ask
04:09him. Obviously when it comes to a Super Over, this is the first one, how much of an advantage is it
04:15with the team that's batted first? Their guys have had a lot more of a rest
04:20or if you're working in the field, are you actually working harder?
04:25No, there is definitely an advantage when you bat second in a Super Over for sure because
04:30the team which bats first needs to set up a target and every time when you set up a target,
04:35you're not sure. In fact, in 20-0s, there's generally an advantage if there is a flat wicket
04:40for a team batting second. So when there are six balls, for sure you've got an advantage batting
04:44second. And Gautam, like I said, we've got a million things to get through. We've not even
04:50got near to the DC batting lineup. Again, a really strong opening. Shaw, Pant, Darwin and Smith
04:58all putting in solid performances for DC. Do they have the top half of a batting
05:06lineup that a lot of other teams will envy now? Yeah, DC are getting their batting
05:16lineup right. Today, Rishabh Pant came at number three because Steve Smith had been using up
05:24more balls. But Steve Smith looked more comfortable at four. But the thing is,
05:30they have the firepower to do it. I mean, Shemron Hetman is a guy who hasn't really clicked so far
05:36this season. But after that, they've got Stoinis coming. So they don't have a problem. The problem
05:41is with Sunrisers Hyderabad, they really have to work extra hard for those bins. And today,
05:48the chase completely, you know, they rallied around Williamson. But it's not going to happen
05:54in all the games. I mean, unless it's a low scoring game, they are moving on to wickets
05:59where they may be producing more runs. I do not know how they're going to fend for themselves.
06:05Okay, and Saheel, obviously, it was two very expensive overs at the end that actually took
06:11it to a super over with Sachith and Khan costing DC a lot of runs, and almost costing them the game.
06:20Is there a problem with DC's depth in their bowling?
06:27I wouldn't say so. I mean, you got Rabada, he's a top class bowler. You know, yes, he conceded
06:34the 14 runs. It was a bad ball, which he bowled to Sachith. I mean, a good shot from Sachith,
06:39no doubt about that. No, I don't think they have a problem with that. I mean, Avesh is
06:44not so experienced, but he has bowled well this tournament. Rabada is a guy you've seen,
06:49he's got fire in him. He's a good bowler, you know. So I don't think they have a problem with
06:53that. Yes, I've been saying this again and again, they should play Nokia. He is a dangerous bowler,
06:59you know, how much pace he has. But I think they're fine.
07:06Okay, now we have to get back on to the other two tabletoppers, Chennai and RCB,
07:12who were in India's early game. And Anas, we didn't really think that we would be able to
07:18top that, but the DC game kind of did. Was it a bit of a surprise that Chennai beat RCB today?
07:26Not really, I'll be honest. Yesterday, I did probably say that RCB go into the match as
07:32slight favourites. But when I saw the toss, and I saw Dhoni deciding to bat first and picking up
07:39that spinner in Imran Tahir, and where on the other side, I see RCB going with a fast bowler
07:44on a dry wicket, that itself gave me the clue that it's going to be Chennai. And I'm not saying
07:50on the basis of what Ravindra Jadhira did in the last tour, I believe they would have been
07:54different in 160. And Gautam, was Chettah's performance, was that an all-round, one of
08:01the best you've ever seen? From Chennai? Yes. Yeah, I mean, they, you know, today, as Anis
08:11was talking about the dry wicket, which made a difference. And then unleashing that Imran Tahir
08:16as a kind of X-factor. I mean, you never know that when will this 41-year-old guy play. But
08:23still, he makes those four overs that he bowls. He's an absolute match winner. And this time,
08:29I think in the Indian conditions, we'll get to see more of him as Chennai goes along.
08:35A wonderful performance. You cannot praise Ravindra Jadhira, you know, whatever praise
08:42you do, it's not enough. I mean, it's one of the, you know, there's a limit to the all-round
08:47performance, you can put it in a T20 game. But this was, you know, this was simply amazing,
08:53the way both the things came up. Okay, and then the other factor,
08:59Saheel, that we need to talk about as the guys are all upping sticks and moving to their new
09:04camps. We go to Ahmedabad and Delhi, I think. How will the new stadiums affect,
09:13you know, we've got three teams now tied at the top. Will they still favour their chances there?
09:21Yeah, why not? They're experienced players. I mean, yes, it's new conditions, but
09:26come on, they're experienced players. They have to adapt to the surface and all, you know.
09:31There's no excuse in cricket, oh, I'm not able to adapt to the surface. This is a prestige league.
09:36It's a professional league. They have to adapt. So I don't think it should be a problem at all.
09:40I mean, yes, the bio-secure bubble about how they have to stay in their room in different places.
09:45Yes, that could be a problem, you know, for the mindset. But if they're trying to adapt to the
09:50pitch, no, I don't think they shouldn't. There shouldn't be a problem.
09:55And Anas, do you think that moving to these two new areas will favour one team more than another?
10:01I was just going through where CSK and where Sunrisers are going. CSK is playing in Delhi,
10:10if I'm not wrong. Correct me if I'm wrong, Gautam. CSK plays their matches in Delhi,
10:16as well as Sunrisers also go to Delhi. There are four teams going to Delhi. That is the Mumbai
10:22Indians, CSK, Rajasthan and Sunrisers. And the other four teams, Punjab, Delhi, KKR, RR go to
10:29Ahmedabad. So because these teams have got used to, especially SRH, and they're going to be spin
10:35friendly, I will favour SRH because they know how to play spin. And I think Delhi wickets also will
10:41be not as slow as Chennai, but will be helping the spinners.
10:48Okay, that's a lot more than I know.
10:52Also, I'd like to add some point to it.
10:54Yeah, no, I think, you know, it is, it's the second phase of IPL. The only thing
11:01that can make a difference is, you know, the boundaries will be longer in Ahmedabad.
11:05So, you know, it often does make a difference, which is the shorter side,
11:10which is the Ahmedabad from what we have seen, it's like, you know, it's like the Melbourne or
11:15it's like the Eden Gardens. So there are chances of spinners getting that, you know, in the
11:23batsman's effort to clear the field, you know, spinners may get the broad advantage of, you know,
11:28getting their victims at the boundary. Apart from that, yes, Ahmedabad wicket was quite a true one,
11:36we had five India, England T20 matches being played there. So it could more be Bombay kind of
11:43contests, we can expect there. We'll see how it goes.
11:49And obviously, I mean, the Delhi ground, is that going to be a little bit of
11:54obviously a lot shorter, obviously, we know that Ahmedabad is going to be the
11:58colossal empty stadium. Will the atmosphere feel better there? Or sorry, will it favour the
12:06shorter batsmen, shall we say, rather than your Chris Gales in Delhi?
12:10No, it could see, you know, a Sharjah kind of, you know, shower of sixes Delhi, I mean,
12:16the square boundaries are really small. But then as Anish said, I mean, the wicket tends to get,
12:22you know, low and slow. And though you're not playing too many matches, as the season wears
12:27on in, you know, when test matches used to be played in Delhi, that was always a problem.
12:31Delhi was once holed up for a dangerous wicket by ICC. But I'm sure those are past. But yes,
12:39some spinners will get a purchase there. And again, I mean, obviously, Anish, you can maybe
12:45shed some light on this and maybe Sahil as well. It's just the luck of the draw as to which stadium
12:49you're playing at, because everyone's playing away from home. Maybe Punjab would have preferred to
12:54play in Delhi rather than Ahmedabad, given their big hitters. And, you know, they can rack up like
13:00250. But as you said, with the bigger boundaries, they might get caught on the ropes a lot more if
13:07they're there. And they don't have any say in that. You just have to play at the stadium.
13:13Not really, Matt. All the teams are getting fair share of different grounds. And to be very honest,
13:18CSK has adapted the best in Mumbai than any other team. Because generally, CSK depends on the
13:24spinners. OK, they got a dry wicket today and the other day. But you have to give credit to the
13:29teams which have won four games, similar to RCB. And SRH has to do a lot of soul-scratching as to
13:35how they improve their middle order. Because they have been there, but not there.
13:40Sahil, quickly finish it up. I just have one question about the SRH firing lineup. Is Manish
13:47Pandey ruled out through injury? Maybe Gautam, you can answer this. No, I think couple of matches,
13:54his shot selection was not particularly good. When you've got a batting lineup like this,
14:00Sahil, I don't think you can afford to keep him out. I mean, he's your number four.
14:06And now that you've got... Kedar Jadhav didn't look too bad. He's got tons of experience.
14:12He's played in a regular India squad under Kohli for quite some time. Then he bowls that
14:19slingy action he brings in. Sometimes he can break partnerships for you.
14:26So you can use him. I mean, getting to use youngsters like Virat Singh and Abhishek
14:32Sarma is a good idea. But there is always a kind of time and space for everything.
14:41You should feel your best team and you can't keep Manish out.
14:44Yep. Cool. Okay. Well, guys, I mean, tomorrow we've got Punjab Kings against KKR and KKR
14:51desperately need a win. I think Owen Morgan more than the team, given the amount of pressure
14:56that he's under. But we shall see how that goes because we're at Ahmedabad for that big game
15:01tomorrow in the colossal new stadium. We shall see what happens. Thanks again to Anas, to Sahil
15:08and to Gautam. And don't forget, guys, don't forget to log on to our Facebook page at Golf News
15:15and predict your winner to get your chance to win one of these tops and also a three-month
15:20subscription. And we shall see you all again tomorrow. Thank you. Thank you, guys. Take care.
15:26Bye.
