A fabulous 138-run opening stand between Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw saw Delhi Capitals make light of a steep target of 189 to beat Chennai Super Kings by seven wickets in their first IPL game in Mumbai today.

00:00A tough decision has to be taken to drop a senior player and bring another senior player like Robin Uthup and as you know...
00:06Did I hear you clearly? Did you say that the best captain in the world? He's become old. Your MS Dhoni is doing nothing. He's called a duck. What are you talking, Sahil?
00:23Hi guys and welcome to IPL 2021.
00:26Once again we're here with Straightbat which is with Golf News and Anas Sajan, Mr Cricket UAE and also his son Sahil.
00:33We're also joined by Gautam Bacharai who is here from our associate editor at Golf News and myself, Mark Smith.
00:42Now we obviously had an absolute thriller yesterday. Almost had a thriller today but it looked like Chennai just didn't come up to the task
00:55and Delhi Capitals just ran away with it. Anas?
01:00Well yes, absolutely spot on that Chennai couldn't defend this target even though at one stage it looked like they had a decent target
01:09but no target is big in the Wankhede Stadium with the dew and the small grounds and drop catches did cost CSK dearly.
01:20Alright and anyone else chipping in?
01:24We'd like to ask Sahil what his take would be. We know that his favourite hasn't had a good start but the signs are promising.
01:37You had Suresh Shahnawaz back and he was batting as if he had never left.
01:42Yeah, absolutely. I'm a Chennai Super Kings fan. It was really fun to watch Suresh Shahnawaz back and all Indian fans will also be excited to watch him.
01:54Obviously after the poor start from Chennai, they made up really well. Good to see Moeen Ali get some runs.
02:00Also Sam Curran chipping in with the bat. Of course every Indian fan must be disappointed that Dhoni did get out first ball.
02:07But in the end as Mr Dhoni said that 189 is a chaseable total in the Wankhede Stadium.
02:16Do we think that obviously Faf has got a great little landmark next to him because he's going to be the guy that had the first duck of the whole of the IPL.
02:29Like I said, Moeen, solid numbers. Raina, solid numbers. Ambati, solid numbers. Jadeja, solid numbers.
02:40And my favourite cricketer Sam Curran, great numbers coming in at the end.
02:45Should there be a change in the order to bring these, we call them bowlers, but do we now regard Sam Curran as an all-rounder who should be further up the order?
03:00I definitely would like to see Moeen Ali up the order. Okay, Faf had a bad match.
03:07But what has hurt CSK even in the last year as a power player, you have scored 41 runs in six overs, which is below seven.
03:14And when you watch the opposition, they have scored 65. Okay, they were batting second.
03:18But CSK know that if they have to compete in this tournament, they need to get on in the first power play and make sure to put on at least 60.
03:27Even if they lose a couple of wickets scoring 60 is fine, but at least you are up and running.
03:32Okay, what does your son think of that?
03:36Personally, I think, you know, I mean, yes, Faf got out for a duck today.
03:42But can you base that on one game that he should be dropped?
03:46Personally, I don't think so. But if he does not perform further towards the tournament, I think they should also pick Robin Uthappa ahead of him and bring a foreign bowler in.
03:56Like they have signed, instead of John Silverwood, they got Jason Bairndorf, they've got Lungi Ngiri.
04:01Or if they want an extra spinner, they can get Imran Tahir in the mix.
04:05But personally, I think Robin Uthappa would be perfect to open the batting for them.
04:09But then, I mean, here's the question, does money speak more than star power?
04:15You know, like, you know, it's Faf to places, you know, do you drop him?
04:19Or, you know, are we looking at TV revenue here?
04:23Or are we looking at win the match?
04:27We talked about this last night about strength of the bench and who actually wins the tournament.
04:37Is it the star players or is it the strength and the depth?
04:41I'll ask Gautam to answer this question. He's more senior to me. He'll be able to answer this well.
04:48See, my point is, I think we, to be very honest, I think we are being overtly critical about Chennai.
04:56See, they are coming out of a very bad last season.
05:00This match, what effectively happened was, I mean, when you are 7 for 2,
05:05then it's obvious that in your those six powerplay overs, you can't be making possibly 60 for 2.
05:11Then you are looking to consolidate and which both Suresh Raina and Mohin,
05:17I think sending Mohin with his experience, I mean, he had been a T20 captain for England, mind you.
05:25So both of them managed to do the repair work reasonably well.
05:30And then that cameo effort by Sam Curran, you know, they managed to get there with 188.
05:38But what happened was, you know, you won't get to see this kind of opening partnerships
05:45like the one we saw between Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan too often, even in IPL,
05:51even though the batting conditions were near perfect.
05:54I mean, there was not Prithvi Shaw coming on the back of his, you know,
05:59what was a brilliant domestic season, both in Saeed Mustaqali as well as Vijay Hajare.
06:06Didn't put a foot wrong.
06:08The TV pundits were saying that how technically compact he has become.
06:12And Dhawan, we know, Dhawan also possibly had a point to prove that, you know,
06:16I'm just 35, but I can still play this world T20.
06:20So these two, I mean, by the time when the first wicket fell,
06:23DC were citing, you know, that improbable chase to make it possible.
06:28I think that's where they took care of the match from Chennai.
06:32Gautam, I just think, I mean, you're absolutely bang on.
06:34If you take Faf out of the equation, if you look at the numbers,
06:38they're match winning numbers.
06:40Moeen got 36, Raina got 54, Ambati got 23, Jadeja got 26,
06:45and Curran, right at the tail end, came in with 34.
06:49That is a match winning innings, really.
06:53Yes, yes.
06:55No, but here's the question.
06:58Why are they, you know, converting that into victories?
07:02No, that's what I was, I think Anish will agree with me.
07:07If they were playing the same game in Chennai, you know, 188 or even 170
07:13would have been a powerful score.
07:15And the same, you know, Moeen and Ravindra Jadeja,
07:19they would have been very difficult to get it.
07:22What do you say, Anish?
07:24Spot on, Ji, that you mentioned about Dhoni's strength has been spinners
07:28and playing at Chennai on spinning tracks.
07:30Whereas in Mumbai, the spinners hardly get help in a day-night match.
07:34And you could see that neither Jadeja or the other spinner could get any help.
07:39And that's the reason they could not contain the Delhi openers.
07:44And mind you, you can't help with slow fielders.
07:47You see, they are dad's army.
07:49Guys like Raidu, Suresh Raina even is old.
07:53And then most of the fielders, you see, they are not up to the mark.
07:57And when you are facing guys like Prithvi Shaw, who are up from ball one,
08:02you need to make sure that you hold on to their catches.
08:07Okay. And what does Sahil think?
08:11I mean, see, like Mads mentioned, like fielding did not help them today.
08:15Only not likes of the old fielders.
08:17Even good fielders like Mitchell Sattner, who came on as a substitute,
08:20he dropped a catch.
08:21Even a youngster like Ruturaj Gaikwad, he also dropped a catch.
08:24So nothing was going in favour for CSK.
08:27And even Shardul Thakur was bowling very poorly today.
08:30I've got to say, he was bowling really poorly.
08:32So nothing helps.
08:34I can tell you're a little bit of a Chennai fan.
08:40But despite those numbers, Chennai still lost.
08:44I mean, two guys came in. Shaw had 72.
08:47Dhawan had 85.
08:49And the guys lost by seven.
08:51It's a big thumping, really.
08:55Despite those numbers.
08:57I mean, how does a team regroup after that?
09:02Sahil, that's for you.
09:04How does a team regroup?
09:05I mean, obviously, now you have the best captain in the world.
09:08So, you know, it's not a thing.
09:10International cricketers, of course, they will regroup.
09:13They might have to change some things up.
09:15Let's be honest here.
09:16They have to, maybe.
09:17Like I said earlier, maybe Faf has to be dropped.
09:20A tough decision has to be taken.
09:22Drop a senior player.
09:23And bring another senior player like Robin Uttam.
09:26Did I hear you clearly?
09:27Did you say that the best captain in the world?
09:29He's become old.
09:31Your MS Dhoni is doing nothing.
09:33He scored a duck.
09:34What are you talking, Sahil?
09:35It happens with the best.
09:37You have to say that.
09:38It happened last year too.
09:40I think Sahil is going to have a little bad day.
09:43Because I'm also going to pose the same question to him.
09:46Sahil, the thing is, you see, I mean, I think greatness has a shelf life.
09:52I mean, today, they were showing that, you know, while these other cricketers,
09:57after the last IPL, which finished on November 10th, I think.
10:02So, all of them had gone and played international cricket, as we know.
10:07Dhoni was coming back after 161 days to play a competitive game.
10:11And he's, well, he's about, if not 39, say 40.
10:15Now, what he did was he came at number 7.
10:19Now, second ball, he goes for a wild heave, drags the ball onto the stumps,
10:24and goes.
10:26His keeping is still sharp.
10:29Quick think on his feet, you know, that run-out attempt which he did.
10:33But is it time for the CSK management to think of life beyond Dhoni?
10:40Let's start with Sahil.
10:42I mean, you have to be objective.
10:44You can't play the fanboy.
10:46We want to hear from you.
10:48Absolutely, I will not be biased in this.
10:51Yes, they have to think life after Dhoni.
10:53Now, I'm a fan of MS Dhoni.
10:55That's why you may be thinking, yes, I'm taking his side.
10:57All of us are. All of us are.
10:59He cannot deny that he still is a very shrewd captain.
11:02A smart captain. He's one of the best.
11:04Yes, agreed, he did not… He scored a duck today.
11:07In the second ball, he went for a wild shot.
11:09But you can also say the situation was asking to be hit.
11:11It came in the 16th or 17th over.
11:13So, there was no time for him to, you know…
11:15So, why did he come so late?
11:16Is he afraid, like you said, in the mid-innings?
11:21Like Mr. Gautam said, he has not been playing for a while.
11:24So, he had to send the players who have been in touch with the game.
11:27So, that's why he came on number 7.
11:29That's true.
11:30No, hang on. I completely disagree.
11:33Because yesterday, we had A.B. de Villiers,
11:36who has not played any international cricket at all since the last IPL,
11:42came in last night and absolutely smashed it.
11:45So, surely, that doesn't count.
11:48Was A.B. de Villiers playing any other foreign league cricket?
11:53No, he was not playing my son.
11:55He was not playing.
11:56Your Dhoni has gone. It's done. It's done and dusted.
11:58But there is an age gap between A.B. de Villiers and M.S. Dhoni also.
12:01We have to say that.
12:02Yeah, but also, A.B. de Villiers smashed it and Dhoni didn't.
12:07Like I said, A.B. de Villiers came at a time where he needed his team to win the game.
12:12Dhoni came at a time where he was batting first.
12:14He had to attack.
12:15So, there is a big difference.
12:17Alright, we will spare you, Sahil, for the night.
12:19It's kicking up nice.
12:22I'm going to have to cut out the shot now.
12:28Sorry, Gautam, one last thing.
12:30Have you got something to say there? Sorry.
12:35No, I think there was simply plenty to talk about.
12:38That's why we got so animated.
12:41Yes, I mean, one last thing would be,
12:44tomorrow we have got the two overseas captains in the IPL.
12:48They're taking on each other.
12:50It's Warner vs Morgan.
12:52So, I'd just like to throw the ball to Anish and pick his brains about what do you feel is going to be the outcome.
13:00And they're playing in Chennai.
13:03It's going to be a thrilling contest.
13:05Morgan is a shrewd captain. So is Warner.
13:08Spin is going to play a big role.
13:10This is what I can see.
13:11If you're going to ask me which team is going to win,
13:13I would be able to tell that only in my pre-match analysis or probably in the mid-game.
13:19I don't like to just jump the gun.
13:22Yeah, don't spoil us. You've got to do your videos every day, man.
13:28You will see the wicket and then make a comment.
13:31Absolutely, absolutely.
13:33Oh yeah, I'll see who wins and then I'll get a favourite.
13:38Let's try and wrap it up now, guys, because that was a brilliant chat.
13:41We'll be back tomorrow with another chat on day three.
13:46What we've got to say right now is if you can just log in and follow us on Facebook
13:50and that way you can follow our competitions and you can win these lovely, beautiful jackets.
13:57If you just predict the winner each day and two guys, I think, will win that
14:05and also a subscription for three months of golf news.
14:09So, again, thank you to all the Sajans and also thank you to Gautam
14:15because it's just added all the spice. It was absolutely brilliant.
14:18Thank you, guys.
14:19Thank you, guys. Have a good evening.
14:21My pleasure.
14:22Good night.
14:23Thank you. Good night.
14:24Bye-bye.
