00:00Stopping some great talent from coming in because you have an untalented, you know, you have power and you can promote that untalented person, that is wrong nepotism.
00:10Let the people come in, let you also provide that platform, then who's the best will win.
00:15Dubai is, you know, a place where, you know, 2014 where I did the movie Jai Ho and I was a 23 year old kid that time and, you know, this was the place where I first reached out to the world from.
00:38So it's nostalgic to, you know, my first debut music video also, like we planned a lot, you know, India wasn't, is still not very safe.
00:46So we were like, chalo, we'll go to Lonavala and shoot it, that's the max we can go two hours away.
00:51But something just happened and worked out so well that we landed up here and we've shot at the Khodra desert, we've gone to the Twisted Bridge and so many nice, beautiful places that, you know, my song has traveled with me.
01:05And I just feel it's a blessing that, you know, I could come here and it's like, I'd put a post which says it's a reboot for me, starting all over again, because it's a second innings for me.
01:16I've done a lot of independent music, which Armaan has sung or maybe Arijit has sung and they're featured in that.
01:22But this is the first time you'll see me in a music video.
01:25So that's why I'm here in Dubai.
01:27I think a lot of people feel that and I'm very happy also because sometimes people say, there are two brothers, one is Armaan and the other is Malik.
01:38They don't know there's an Amal also.
01:41But that usually happens, you know, because as in our country, like composers always like how film directors are there, the guys who are holding the whole fort.
01:52But it's always like if an actor's film does well, it's always said that this actor's film is doing well.
01:58And when a song does well, it's always going to be KK, Sonu Nigam, Armaan and Arijit.
02:03But I think my young fans and their love and their support has made me believe that I can take this step because I'm personally not a very outgoing, flamboyant guy.
02:14It's not that I'm an introvert, but I think people are just hectic, you know.
02:18And like this whole industry, you know, vibe is not in me.
02:22Like I'm too chill for Bollywood.
02:28More than people throwing me out of the films, I tell them beforehand, you know, like, see, I am not, I'm averse to the idea of just doing too many remixes.
02:37But if you want one original song, I'm always there.
02:41Because today, because of YouTube or digital reach, we may not be able to manage to do a great album because people don't have that time.
02:49It's running, running. Actors have 10 days. In 10 days, they want to shoot three songs.
02:54No composer is human enough to do three great songs in 10 days.
02:58Sometimes it happens. Like I did Azhar where Preetam fell ill and I did the rest of the album.
03:03Four songs I did in nine nights from tune to melody to production.
03:07So that happens only once in a while. You cannot force the brain to make a great song.
03:12And I'm very scared of doing bad work.
03:14So a lot of music directors want to, like once they have that hit, they want to do everything.
03:21And I did that. Like, but if you see, I have kept my range always alive.
03:26If I've done a Suraj Dubai, there's been a Kar Gaye Chul, there's been Main Rahu Ya Na Rahu, Hero, there's been an entire Dhoni soundtrack.
03:33Now I'm doing Saina Nehwal's soundtrack with the whole background score.
03:37Which a lot of people today only dream of, you know, because we don't get a whole film to do.
03:43And we don't have directors like Mani Ratnam who supports a Rehman or an Anurag Basu as Preetam.
03:49This is constructive groupism, which is also needed.
03:52Now it's more like, oh, will you work at this pittance price or will you suck up to me for 20 days?
03:58Or like, will you beg me for work?
04:00And I can't. I've never asked my own dad, ki dad paise chahiye.
04:04I've gone out there on my space.
04:07And I did films and all of this, you know, somewhere because I felt my dad needed to see that, you know, in his life.
04:14Because he struggled, did about 100 films, but was never invited to the biggest of biggest award functions and all those things.
04:24So for composers, I'm quite high.
04:27You know, like the number is like, it's something which usually a singer or a blogger would have.
04:33Armaan doesn't come in comparison to any of the singers right now because he's not just a singer, you know, he's a very good singer.
04:41Not taking that away from you, bro.
04:43And he's very gifted, very hardworking.
04:46He will even melt his ice cream in a microwave to eat it.
04:49He's that dedicated to his voice.
04:52Whereas me before a recording, six cubes of ice with Coke is what I love.
04:57But I respect that the fact that he actually is the first few youngsters who took the social media game so big.
05:04He is about 9 million.
05:06And he is the only Indian artist who's got such a big, you know, poster in Times Square.
05:12You know, those things.
05:14And luckily, maybe, you know, we don't feel trapped with our fans.
05:19Because they treat us like family.
05:21And they're not my fans.
05:23Even when I do a bad song, I write to them.
05:26I say, if you don't like something, please tag me and say you didn't like that baseline or you didn't like the music piece.
05:32So it's a very give and take beautiful relationship.
05:35And they know they're not talking to a robot.
05:38They know that there's not a PR company behind writing these tweets to them.
05:47For me, I can say it has been the most productive Corona-Covid time.
05:52Sorry, like it's a very risky time.
05:54But I was really happy that, you know, I got to stay in my own space.
05:59In the last four months, I've made 28 songs.
06:02And I've never done that in so many years.
06:0528 songs?
06:0628 in four months.
06:07Almost seven, eight songs a month, all original.
06:10And I have met producers.
06:13You know, the projects are being lined up.
06:15I don't know exactly, not signed them.
06:17But everyone I've met with those songs, they have welcomed those songs.
06:21You know, saying this is so fresh from what we've been hearing for such a long time.
06:25From me also, from others.
06:31What happens in Bollywood, stays in Bollywood is not the right way.
06:35People should know the kind of pressure an actor or even a composer.
06:40If they say, like Sonu Nigam spoke about this.
06:45He spoke about it really well in his first video, which I liked.
06:48Then he got a little personal and spoke about criminals and Bhushan Kumar and all these people.
06:54See, I'm not saying that I don't owe my career to...
06:58I'm a label-made composer, no problem.
07:01Then I found visionaries like Neeraj Pandey or now Amol Gupte to work with me.
07:05But I never like to disregard the hand that held me when I was down.
07:11And I think he made that mistake.
07:13You know, you may be brilliantly talented.
07:17I respect him. Armaan and me are fans and I think the whole world loves him.
07:20But that is a little negative way to put it.
07:23You know, you may be someone, you may be the biggest.
07:28But you also started because of Bhushan Kumar.
07:31And maybe Bhushan Kumar's relationship with you is straight.
07:35But call him up, sort your shit out on the phone like men should.
07:41Or like meet. Why do you want to go on Instagram and crap out?
07:45You shouldn't have gone public with it.
07:47And I think it's stupid.
07:50And I feel, you know, with due respect to him or many people who say that,
07:54Oh, this is happening and that is happening.
07:56Tell me one superstar singer or one very big composer who came and launched a boy from the streets
08:02or gave him a chance that he deserved.
08:04You'll not be able to find.
08:05I don't think Sonu Nigam has done it in his 20 years.
08:08When has Sonu Nigam taken anyone and made him a star?
08:11Not that I'm asking him to or he should or anyone owes anyone anything.
08:15But if those guys who have only business in their minds not doing it,
08:20You're an artist, I'm an artist, we should do it.
08:23Stopping some great talent from coming in because you have an untalented,
08:28You know, you have power and you can promote that untalented person.
08:32That is wrong nepotism.
08:33Let the people come in.
08:35Let you also provide that platform.
08:37Then who's the best will win.
08:39Today, people say, Oh, you're a Malik.
08:42Your dad must have called Salman Khan and you got 15 pictures.
08:45No, boss, I did Jai Ho. I sat at home for a year.
08:49So this is my non-film debut and the second inning of my career.
08:56And it's called Tu Mera Nahi.
08:58This is the first time I'm seeing the name in an interview.
09:02And it's the most special song to my heart.
09:04I've made 14, 15 songs out of which I chose this one.
09:08And that's only because my mom, my dad, my brother and most of my friends,
09:13They connected to it.
09:14And I think whenever people will listen to the song,
09:17I think it should be out hopefully in a month or so.
09:19They will relate to me on a different level.
09:23And they'll know that, you know, I'm going to do a lot of independent music.
09:28But this is just the beginning.
09:30And there'll be many more singles coming.
09:32But this is my first one.
09:33So I hope everyone loves it.
09:35And even if you don't love it, you let me know why you don't love it.
09:38Because I'm always ready to learn more.
