00:00Good day. Welcome to the Gulf News Update for Monday, August 1st. Here are the top stories
00:07at this hour.
00:08A powerful Taliban truck bomb struck a hotel for foreigners in Kabul, triggering a seven-hour
00:13gun and bomb assault that highlighted the deteriorating situation in the capital. The
00:17guests and staff of Northgate Hotel were all unharmed, but one policeman was killed after
00:22the bombing.
00:23Earlier this month, Daesh claimed twin bombings that left 80 people dead in the Afghan capital,
00:28the deadliest attack in the city since the Taliban were ousted from power in 2001.
00:33Just days ahead of the Olympic Games, the waterways of Rio de Janeiro are as filthy
00:36as ever, contaminated with raw human sewage teeming with dangerous viruses and bacteria,
00:42according to a 16-month-long study commissioned by the Associated Press.
00:46Not only are some 1,400 athletes at risk of getting violently ill in water competitions,
00:52but the AP's tests indicate that tourists also face potentially serious health risks
00:57on the golden beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana.
01:00Jimmy Walker said he never would have dreamed after missing the British Open cut two weeks
01:05ago that he would be the next man to hoist a major golf trophy, but the 37-year-old American
01:10pulled off the astonishing feat at the PGA Championship, sloshing 36 holes across soggy
01:16Baltarossol and out-dueling top-ranked defending champion Jason Day down the stretch to win.
01:22The new teen Miss USA will get to keep her crown despite an outcry over tweets she once
01:27wrote using racist language.
01:29The Miss Universe organization, which owns the Miss Teen USA pageant, issued a statement
01:34chastising Carly Hay's words but also supporting her continued growth.
01:39After she was crowned in Las Vegas, social media users found tweets containing the n-word
01:44linked to an account with Hay's name.
01:46And finally, weather.
01:47Today's high across the UAE will be 43 degrees Celsius, dropping to 32 degrees at night.
