00:00Good day and welcome to the Gulf News Update for Wednesday, October 1st.
00:08Here are the top stories at this hour.
00:10Thousands of pro-democracy protesters thronged the streets of Hong Kong, some of them during
00:15National Day celebrations, as demonstrations spread to a new area of the city, ratcheting
00:20up pressure on its pro-Beijing government.
00:22A beaming Hong Kong chief executive, Leung Ching-ying, who was appointed by Beijing,
00:27shook hands with supporters waving the Chinese flag, even as protesters who want him to
00:32stand down chanted, we want real democracy.
00:35New handheld gun radars will be used to catch speeding watercrafts such as jet skis and
00:40boats near the Dubai coastline.
00:42The new speed limits, ranging from five to seven knots depending on the location, will
00:46not apply to vessels navigating deeper Gulf waters offshore.
00:49US President Barack Obama and the Israeli regime's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
00:55will meet for the first time since Israel's summer war on Gaza heightened tensions between
00:59two leaders who have long had a prickly relationship.
01:02Much of today's discussion is expected to focus on US-led nuclear talks with Iran.
01:07With a deadline for reaching a final agreement less than two months away, all sides say significant
01:11gaps remain.
01:13A man who flew from Liberia to Dallas this month was diagnosed with Ebola, becoming the
01:17first person to board a passenger jet and unknowingly bringing the disease from West
01:21Africa where it has killed thousands of people in recent months.
01:25But health officials were quick to tamper down any hysteria, emphasising the ways in
01:29which the US medical system is well-equipped to halt the spread of the disease.
01:34India's emcee Mary Kom won the gold medal in the women's flyweight boxing competition
01:38at the Incheon Asian Games.
01:40Mary, a five-time world champion, defeated Kazakhstan's Zaina Shekharpakova 2-0, with
01:45one judge scoring the bout 38-38.
01:48And finally, the weather.
01:49The daytime temperature will be 38 degrees Celsius, falling to 28 degrees at night.
01:53That's all for now.
