00:00Good day and welcome to the Gulf News Update for Monday, July the 20th.
00:09Here are the top stories at this hour.
00:11The UN Security Council is due to adopt a resolution today that would clear a path for
00:16international sanctions crippling Iran's economy to be lifted.
00:20The Council's five permanent members plus Germany crafted the deal signed in Vienna
00:24last week as well as the draft UN resolution.
00:27The text launches a progressive and conditional lifting of sanctions in exchange for guarantees
00:32that the Islamic Republic will not develop a nuclear bomb.
00:37More than a half century of cold war and lingering enmity came to an end as the United States
00:41and Cuba restored full diplomatic relations.
00:44The new era began with little fanfare when an agreement between the two nations to resume
00:49normal ties on July 20th came into force just after midnight Sunday and the diplomatic missions
00:55of each country were upgraded from interest sections to embassies.
01:00The historic shift will be publicly memorialized later today when Cuban officials formally
01:05inaugurate their embassy in Washington and Cuba's blue, red and white starred flag will
01:11fly for the first time since the country's broke ties in 1961.
01:17Greek banks reopened today after a three-week shutdown aimed at stopping a run on the banks
01:22which could have crashed the financial system.
01:24However, the country now faces widespread price hikes as part of a cash for reform deal
01:29with the country's creditors.
01:31That deal should also allow Greece to make a 4.2 billion euro payments to the European
01:37Central Bank which is due today.
01:40In sport, young Irishman Paul Dunn could today become the first amateur winner of the British
01:46Open Golf Championship since 1930 as it begins the weather-delayed final round at St. Andrews
01:52tied for the lead at 12 under par.
01:55The 22-year-old produced a brilliant round of 66 yesterday to put him level with South
02:00African Louis Oosthuizen and Australian Jason Day at the top of the congested leaderboard.
02:08Under oath in a hotel, Bill Cosby sketched a very different image of America's dad, a
02:13philanderer who plied young women with quaaludes, claimed to be adept at reading their unspoken
02:20desires and tried to use his wealth to keep Mrs. Cosby in the dark.
02:24The portrait comes from Cosby's own words in a transcript of a deposition taken in Philadelphia.
02:30It is the only publicly available testimony he has given in response to accusations he
02:36drugged and sexually assaulted dozens of women over four decades.
02:40Cosby has denied the allegations, calling the sexual contact consensual.
02:46And finally, the weather. Today's high across the UAE will be 42°C, dropping to 32°C at
02:52night.
02:53That's all for now. Thanks for watching. And as always, you can get the latest news
