00:00Good day and welcome to the Gulf News Update for Thursday, July the 16th.
00:09Here are the top stories at this hour.
00:12Hours after police and demonstrators clashed in central Athens, Greek lawmakers early this
00:18morning approved austerity measures that were overwhelmingly rejected by their citizens
00:23just days ago.
00:24In the end, 229 of the 300 members of the parliament supported the bailout laws, but
00:31much of the support came from opposition parties.
00:34The vote represented a stark turnabout for the government and it was the price Greece's
00:39lenders demanded for saving the country from a whirlwind of economic turmoil.
00:45Controversial security bills that opponents say will undermine 70 years of pacifism and
00:51could see Japanese troops fighting abroad for the first time since World War II passed
00:57through the powerful lower house of parliament today.
01:00Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's ruling coalition was left alone to vote after all main opposition
01:06parties walked out of the chamber in protest, a move intended to reflect widespread public
01:12anger over the legislation.
01:15The first high-resolution images sent back by NASA's New Horizons spacecraft are already
01:21prompting scientists to reconsider their ideas about Pluto and its largest moon, Charon,
01:27as distant, dormant worlds.
01:30The new pictures reveal that Pluto is home to a large mountain range made of water ice
01:36with peaks as high as 11,000 feet, rivaling the Rocky Mountains in size.
01:42Caitlyn Jenner accepted the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the ESPYs last night, receiving a
01:49standing ovation from some of the sporting world's biggest stars.
01:53She also gave a 10-minute speech during the annual awards, honouring the year's top athletes
01:58and moments.
02:00Members of her famous family, including stepdaughters Kim and Khloe Kardashian and Kylie and Kendall
02:07Jenner, were present.
02:09Finally, the weather.
02:10Today's high across the UAE will be 39 degrees Celsius, dropping to 31 degrees at night.
02:16That's all for now.
02:17Thanks for watching.
02:18We will be back with the newscast on Sunday, but you can get the latest news at gulfnews.com.
