00:00Good day. Welcome to the Gulf News update for Wednesday, February the 19th. Here are
00:09the top stories at this hour.
00:11Null and credit card payments have been introduced on 20 taxis in Dubai as part of the Smart
00:16Taxi program. Around 1,000 airport taxis will be upgraded in the next two months, while
00:21the new payment system will go live on the entire fleet by mid-2015. A two-dirham service
00:27charge will be added per trip for payment through credit card, while one dirham will
00:31be charged extra per trip for null payments.
00:35The Indian state of Tamil Nadu has decided to release all seven convicts serving life
00:39terms in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. The move comes a day after the Indian Supreme
00:44Court commuted a death penalty for three of them. Chief Minister J. J. Lalitha told the
00:49Assembly the state would seek a response from the federal government on the case, and if
00:53there was no reply within three days, then all seven convicts would be freed.
00:59Iran's negotiators have taken a tough opening position in nuclear talks with the US and
01:03other global powers. They pledged never to dismantle equipment or facilities that allegedly
01:08raises suspicion that the Islamic Republic could produce atomic weapons.
01:13Riot police have launched a fresh assault on protesters in central Kiev earlier today,
01:18escalating a bloody standoff that has already left at least 25 people in Ukraine dead. A
01:23volley of tear gas rained down on protesters and more tents went up in flames as riot squads
01:28took up positions around the monument in the centre of Independence Square.
01:33Kiran Reddy has resigned as the Chief Minister of India's Andhra Pradesh state and from the
01:37Congress party. The move comes a day after the lower house of India's parliament passed
01:42a bill creating Telangana as the 29th state of India. The bill comes up in the upper house
01:47of parliament today.
01:50Abu Dhabi may have removed the 5% rental cap, but substantial new residential supply could
01:55ensure that rents do not spiral out of hand. The high volume of expected new supply of
02:00around 40,000 units in the next three years may help curb some of the inflationary pressures,
02:05according to a new report issued by realty firm CBRE.
02:09Sports, football and four-time winners Barcelona and French champions Paris Saint-Germain took
02:15huge strides towards the Champions League last eight, both winning away from home last
02:19night. Barcelona prevailed 2-0 over Abu Dhabi in Manchester City, while PSG thumped German
02:25outfit Bayer Leverkusen 4-0.
02:27And finally, the weather. Today's high across the UAE will be 23 degrees Celsius, dropping
