00:00Good morning, my name is Phil Hewitt, Group Arts Editor at Sussex Newspapers. Lovely to
00:06speak again to Mike Jenkins. Now Mike, you were doing something fabulous sounding on
00:10Saturday March the 15th from 2.15pm to 5pm at the Newport Centre Jubilee Hall, Chichester.
00:17You are offering The Readiness Is All, Speaking Shakespeare for Performance. Now why is this
00:23necessary? Why do people need guidance on speaking Shakespeare, do you think?
00:29Well, speaking Shakespeare is a challenge for actors but even for enthusiasts who want
00:35to experience what it's like to speak Shakespeare for performance. So I often think of the actor's
00:44voice and the actor's body, that's their instrument. So you wouldn't send a musician to play a
00:51concert piece without them practising. And something that actors don't do so much as
00:57musicians because our instrument is our body and our emotions and our mind and our breath
01:04and our tongues and all those things, is we don't do the scales. You know, concert, brilliant
01:10musicians still do scales every day, they still practise. And great actors and great
01:15singers practise every day.
01:17And so the readiness is all.
01:19So the readiness is all, exactly. So if your apparatus is primed, then when you learn the
01:25speech or you speak it from a piece of paper, then everything just is ready to go because
01:31it's been well, well, well oiled.
01:34So who do you think would benefit most from the session on that day?
01:38So I've thought about this a lot and I think the people that would benefit most are probably
01:44students of acting. So that covers a broad range. You don't have to be a student on a
01:49university course or a drama school or an FE course studying acting. But anyone who would
01:54think of themselves as wanting to perform in front of an audience.
02:00Perfect. And to sign up for the course, what do people do?
02:05So in order to sign up, they could visit my website.
02:07I've actually put all the details on the home page.
02:10So that's michaeljenkins.co.uk and you can either just click to pay for the course
02:17there and then on the website or feel free to email me if you want to ask questions and
02:23put your name on the list.
02:25And there are concessions available as well.
02:27So anyone on a low income or students could speak to me and we can arrange a sliding
02:32scale if they'd like that.
02:35So Saturday, March the 15th in Chichester, Saturday afternoon, the readiness is all
02:40speaking Shakespeare for performance with Mike.
02:43Lovely to speak to you, Mike.
02:45Thank you so much, Phil.
02:46Thanks.
