Everton’s January transfer window was frustratingly quiet, leaving fans questioning the club’s ambitions this season. Financial restrictions and ownership change-arounds limited their options, resulting in no major signings to strengthen David Moyes’ squad.

00:00There's not a lot of number nines out there anymore because teams play with only one striker.
00:07It's not like there's a wash with centre-forwards anymore and if you're a striker, do you want
00:13to go to Everton?
00:14Now, there's probably more appeal going to Everton under David Moyes than there was Sean
00:19Dyche.
00:20It was a thankless task leading the line for Everton under Sean Dyche, but Moyes has got
00:25a bit more of an emphasis on strikers playing between the posts, but it's got to be right
00:33for the player.
00:34Will they want to make the move to Everton where they might be in the relegation battle
00:38or do they go somewhere else?
00:40So yeah, it's certainly put a spanner into Everton's recruitment because they were probably
00:45looking at, say, wingers, tackling midfielders, maybe a left-back if there was any more room
00:49in the budget, but I think the priority now is getting the striker in.
00:54And looking at Everton's January window now, we obviously mentioned the takeover and them
00:59coming in and nothing was going to happen overnight.
01:02Sean Dyche, before he was sacked, was obviously certain that players had to come in.
01:07Now, David Moyes is so certain as well that reinforcements are needed.
01:12Yes, there's that little gap at the moment from the relegation battle, but things can
01:15change so quickly when you're down there and you're really struggling and you don't want
01:21to get to the position where you are relying on other teams to be misperforming.
01:26Why has it been so slow this month for Everton?
01:28I know obviously that the takeover has only really just taken place and just processed.
01:34It's not going to happen straight away, as I say, and maybe fans will continue their
01:39frustration towards that and the lack of investment because, as we pointed out before, they've
01:44got the most loans in the Premier League, they've relied on loanees, for example, for
01:48a number of seasons now as well, and they've got these older players as well.
01:53What should their strategy be moving forward as well on top of that?
01:58I think it's been a difficult month.
01:59January has already been a slow month, there hasn't been a lot of movement has there, and
02:04changing managers hasn't helped.
02:09Probably there was a list of targets shown up for Sean Dyche, maybe to suit his style
02:13a bit more.
02:14A frequent group were seeing talks with him over part ways and then they had to open talks
02:21with David Moyes.
02:22So I don't know, how long are you looking at it, a period, maybe five to seven days
02:27maybe where probably all transfer talks are on hold and then talking to the recruitment
02:32team saying, right, who have we identified, and he wanted to have his say because when
02:37he was in his first spell he was very, very involved in recruitment and if he's going
02:44to be playing these players he wants to have a say.
02:48And then it's a balancing act.
02:50Will the players that he wants, are they going to come available?
02:55So it's about probably waiting and seeing if you can get those deals over the line.
