Kevin Thelwell, Everton’s director of football, has been navigating a challenging period at the club. Despite overseeing some recent transfer activity, including bringing in new faces, Thelwell has faced criticism as Everton struggles for consistency on the pitch.
With the club’s long-term stability at stake, Thelwell’s ability to secure smart signings and build a solid foundation will be pivotal in determining his role moving forward.

00:00Well, looking at Everton and the latest in terms of the boardroom and the situation off
00:08the pitch obviously, in terms of the recruitment across January, it wasn't as good as many
00:15would have expected but obviously you had the managerial change as well and there was
00:18a lot to handle off the pitch before you looked at the recruitment side. In terms of the sort
00:24of director of football and that sort of scouting system going on with Everton, where does it
00:29stand at the moment? We've mentioned about Kevin Falwell's future at the club and his
00:34sort of situation, what's the latest you can tell us?
00:37Yeah, it's interesting because Kevin Falwell, a lot of fans have asked for transparency
00:42and that's what he did. He came out after the window shut, spoke to the club's media
00:47team about why Everton didn't go and sign a striker and I think most people would agree
00:53that what he said, there wasn't many out there and Everton didn't want to ruin the
00:58current PSR situation that they've worked really hard to improve. He said that Everton
01:04have racked up £225 million in player sales during his time at the club and brought in
01:11players for £145 million, so £80 million minus net spend there to reduce the PSR situation
01:20Look at the way a striker out there at Everton, they panicked before and went out and bought
01:25players that have proven a little bit detrimental. I mean, Neil Mawpais is the one you think
01:30of in recent times when it comes to a striker. But yeah, now you're looking at the summer
01:36because Dave and we've probably started planning ahead for the summer and what happens now
01:44Kevin Fellowell, I'm sure he still will be because he's a really professional,
01:49diligent person. He'll want to give his best to the end. He'll want to be staying at Everton,
01:54let's be frank. He's had to deal with a lot, put it that way, since he joined the club.
02:04He maybe has been a little bit hamstrung in terms of what he's able to do in terms of his job
02:09because he's been dealing with so many things, putting out fires for new ownership in the
02:15free-kicking crew. I'm sure he would like to have a decent budget. Look, the positives are there,
02:21but as you say, I think to judge him will be the start of next season once he has a full
02:27PC and once he's got the players in that he wants, because he is working in tough circumstances as
02:33well. He was only able to bring one player in January in Charlie Alcaraz.
02:39So, the injuries as well, as you say, it's difficult. Look, if Everton comfortably has
02:45gone into the last three or four games as dead robust, then I think it's a sterling job that
02:50he's achieved because that's what he was brought in to do, to ensure that a relegation battle was
02:55avoided. As things stand, that's what's happening.
