00:47arrested.
00:53Hello welcome to From the South, I'm Luis Alberto Matos, from Televisu Studios in Havana,
00:57Cuba.
00:58We begin with the news.
00:59The situation in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo is deteriorating.
01:04Recent fighting between the National Army and the Rwandan government-backed M23 rebel
01:08group left more than a hundred people dead.
01:11With memories of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi still fresh, the authorities in
01:17North Kipu have confirmed that more than a thousand people have been wounded and half
01:21a million displaced.
01:22The toll is the result of the clashes between the M23 rebels backed by 4,000 Rwandan soldiers
01:29and the Congolese army.
01:31Doctors from the International Committee of the Red Cross have reported grueling days
01:35treating serious injuries and seeing many bodies on the streets of Goma, the capital
01:40of North Kipu.
02:03The Israeli genocidal forces continue their siege of the West Bank, where they killed
02:07a young man in the town of Jenin on Wednesday.
02:10In Gaza, the killing continues, with different methods.
02:12The Zionists did not respect the ceasefire in Gaza for a single day.
02:16On Wednesday morning, their boats wounded several fishermen in Hanounis, south of the
02:21Strip, where they also arrested two of them.
02:24The mayor of Deir el-Stiyah, northwest of Salfit, Abdel Rahim Zidane, confirmed that
02:29the genocidal troops fired toxic gases at several houses in the area, killing a whole
02:34family, including a baby.
02:35All of them died of suffocation.
02:37On the other hand, the Red Crescent has confirmed the killing of 25-year-old Omar al-Hayya.
02:43The young man was attacked by a drone in the city of Jenin.
02:51And in Palestine, over 376,000 Palestinians have returned to northern Gaza in the last
02:5748 hours after the ceasefire came into force.
03:00The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported that Palestinians
03:05are returning to Gaza City and the Palestinian towns of Jabalia, Beit Lahaya, and Beit Hanoun,
03:11areas that were hit by the Israeli occupation during 15 consecutive months.
03:15The United Nations Office also emphasized that most of the returnees are men, a quarter
03:21are women, and the other quarter are children.
03:24Meanwhile, OSHA pointed out that most of the displaced have set up tents next to their
03:29destroyed homes.
03:36And the United Nations Agency for Palestine Refugees accused Israel of trying to sabotage
03:40the recovery and political transition of Gaza.
03:42UNRWA's chief, Philip Lazzarini, made the accusation after the Zionist regime ordered
03:47to forcibly close the agency.
03:49Experts say that the government of Benjamin Netanyahu wants to strip the Palestinians
03:53of their refugee status and deny them their right to self-determination in addition to
03:57erasing their history and identity.
04:00Lazzarini argues that curtailing its operations, in addition to undermining the ceasefire and
04:05compromising the international humanitarian response, will sabotage the recovery and political
04:10transition of Gaza.
04:12Mr. President, the Knesset legislation defies the resolution of this Council and the General
04:23Assembly.
04:24It flouts the ruling of the International Court of Justice.
04:29It disregards that UNRWA is a mechanism established by the General Assembly to provide assistance
04:35to Palestinian refugees pending a political answer to the question of Palestine.
04:41Implementing the legislation makes a mockery of international law and imposes massive constraints
04:48on UNRWA's operation.
04:51New Zealand will not allow entry into its territory of Israeli soldiers involved in
04:55the genocide in Gaza.
04:57Since the onset of the Zionist onslaught, New Zealand authorities put in place a screening
05:01process.
05:02It specifies the necessary requirements, many of which are related to the travelers' military
05:07service and the length of time they performed it.
05:10The measure has recently gained prominence as the country barred entry to an unspecified
05:14group of Israelis who refused to provide the information.
05:18Palestinian Solidarity networks conduct major international campaigns to identify the Israeli
05:22soldiers, many of whom have publicized their war crimes on social media.
05:42Russian air defense forces shot down more than 130 Ukrainian drones in nine areas of
05:47the country.
05:48The Russian Defense Ministry said approximately half of the destroyed drones were shot down
05:52in the Kursk border region.
05:53The Defense Ministry also detailed that another 27 unmanned aerial vehicles were shot down
05:57in the Bryansk region, which also borders Ukrainian territory, while another 11 Ukrainian
06:03UAVs were eliminated in the western area of Smolensk, bordering Belarus.
06:07Ukraine intensified its offensive against Russian territory during the last week.
06:16And the Belarusian government expects to become a full member of the BRICS political-economic
06:20forum.
06:21Foreign Minister Maxim Ryzhenkov stressed that being a member of the BRICS and interacting
06:27in the alliance allows to expand strategic ties with countries and trade partners at
06:31a global level.
06:32Ryzhenkov also indicated that the bloc promotes the development and growth of bilateral relations
06:37at the highest level in areas such as politics, economy, culture, technology, among others.
06:44The diplomat pointed out that his country is aligned with the new global needs and seeks
06:48to contribute to the policy of multi-polarity, with which the BRICS are identified at present
06:54in order to preserve and build real peace and support each other's peoples at all levels.

07:34Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger will no longer be part of the economic community of West
07:38African states as of Wednesday, despite leaving the grouping without 50% of the region.
07:45The three countries have formed the Confederation of Sahel States, a very important milestone
07:49in the region.
07:50The consequences for the Sahel are enormous, particularly in terms of economic impact,
07:54but it is also a reflection of the inability of the states that make up the economic community
07:59to deal with the crisis.
08:00The Sahel formally accepted the three countries' request to leave in December of this year.
08:06The new alliance that makes up the Confederation will maintain relations with the ECOWAS states
08:10but will distance itself from what it sees as behaviour that is far removed from Pan-Africanism.
08:16Australia's emergency services report wildfires that devastated thousands of hectares in the
08:27southeast of the country.
08:29According to the data provided by the authorities, the combination of hot and dry weather conditions
08:33favoured the spread of the fire in several natural parks.
08:37Among these is Little Desert National Park, with at least 65,000 hectares destroyed in
08:42less than 24 hours.
08:44Emergency services continue to work to contain the flames, as well as to protect wildlife
08:48and nearby communities.
08:50So far, no casualties or injuries have been reported.
09:00And according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, nearly 6,000 migrants have been
09:05arrested.
09:06The agency updated that 969 arrests were added to the 4,981 detentions reported at midday
09:12on Tuesday.
09:13In this way, the controlled operations ordered by President Donald Trump amounted to 5,950
09:20arrests who have allegedly committed serious crimes.
09:23The federal government has a wide range of defiant crimes and offensives.
09:27In less than 48 hours, they have gone from murderers and thieves to people who are criminals
09:32just for entering the country illegally, as the White House Spokesperson Carolyn Leavitt
09:37ensured.
09:38And in the United States, a federal judge halts the President's decision to suspend
09:47public aid and essential assistance programs.
09:49Another executive order by the President of the United States has been halted by the courts.
09:54In this case, the White House will not be able to freeze federal aid, as ordered by
09:58the President.
09:59The order, which had unleashed a political storm while posing a risk to the health of
10:04millions of citizens, as well as affecting the energy transition and international aid,
10:09was blocked by a federal judge in Washington.
10:12The decision runs until February 3rd and has received strong support from the Attorney
10:16General of 23 states, who announced they will challenge the President's actions.
10:27The World Health Organization warned of serious consequences to low- and middle-income nations
10:31in their programs to combat the human immunodeficiency virus due to Trump's administration's decision
10:38to immediately suspend its funding.
10:40WHO stated that those programs provided access to therapies against the virus to over 30
10:46million people worldwide.
10:48The entity further alerted that the end of U.S. sponsorship could result in an upsurge
10:52of new infections and deaths, which could reverse the progress achieved in recent decades.
10:57In this regard, it called on the United States to authorize additional waivers to ensure
11:01the provision of life-saving HIV treatment and care.
11:10Honduras has responded to the White House's orders against migrants.
11:14President Zumara Castro announced the measures she will take to help her compatriots.
11:19The national emergency strategy was announced on national television on Tuesday evening.
11:24The Central American nation will implement action programs for the more than 200,000
11:30Hondurans with deportation orders, as well as people of other nationalities.
11:34Affirming that human mobility is a phenomenon exacerbated by the implementation of a liberal
11:38economic system and reaffirming that migration is a human right, she explained that the plan
11:43includes support in areas such as health, social and legal assistance, the creation
11:48of shelters, as well as family reunification.
11:59I reaffirm my position to maintain a close dialogue with the United States of America
12:04so that our policies of reciprocity and respect are confirmed by both nations for the sake
12:08of our peoples.
12:12I inform the Honduran people that I decree and enact the national emergency strategy
12:21for the protection of Honduran migrants, which includes an action program for the following
12:29groups of migrants.
12:33Hondurans in an irregular migratory situation in the United States, Honduran migrants in
12:39transit, Honduran returnees.
12:45These emergency action programs force us to make cuts in public administration and budgetary
12:49efforts within the difficult condition in which we find ourselves in our country.
12:55The programs include economic and social rehabilitation.
12:59The programs include economic reintegration.

14:12as in just 25 days at least 600 people had been killed by armed groups.
14:22In Venezuela, during the plenary session of the Federal Government Council 2025, President
14:27Nicolás Maduro referred to the Venezuelan people's capacity to move forward.
14:31During the ceremony, President Maduro urged the Secretariat of the Federal Council of
14:34Government to work collectively to solve the main problems of the territory, taking into
14:39account, in the first place, the people's power.
14:43He also emphasized that next April 27, the elections for deputies to the National Assembly,
14:49as well as for governors and members of the legislative councils, will be held, emphasizing
14:54that in spite of sanctions and the constant attacks by the United States on the economy,
14:58the country has managed to move forward.
15:05The President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, also presented decorations and led a farewell
15:10ceremony to the ambassadors of Iran and Algeria at the Miraflores Palace in the city of Caracas.
15:16In the ceremony, he awarded the Francisco de Miranda Order in its first class to diplomats
15:21Hoyatola Soltani and Yassin Hadji, in recognition to their outstanding work in the country.
15:29Venezuela and Iran share a historical relationship, highlighted by their joint membership in the
15:34Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and the Non-Aligned Countries Movement, while
15:40relations with Algeria have been strengthened since 1971.
15:44President Maduro highlighted Bolivarian peace diplomacy as a key driver for a multi-polar
15:50world.
15:59In the presence of the Cuban Head of State Miguel DÃaz-Canel, members of the Council
16:11of State and Ministers, the Sixth International Conference on the Balance of the World was
16:16inaugurated on Tuesday in Havana.
16:18The country's capital, the event considered a forum of plural and multidisciplinary thought,
16:23brings together world leaders and representatives of social organizations to promote dialogue
16:28between civilizations, without hegemonism and with a culture of peace.
16:33Héctor Hernández Prado, coordinator of the Organizing Committee and President of the
16:39International Preparatory Committee, said that more than 900 foreign delegates from
16:4393 countries take part in the event.
16:51Leaders and activists attending this conference recognize that it is an opportunity to come
16:56up with ideas against barbarism.
17:02We come here for turning into a reality what Martà said trenches of ideas worth over trenches
17:07of stone to unite the peoples of the Americas.
17:14I am seeing now that Trump is threatening all countries.
17:19It is incredible in less than two weeks he is threatening countries from Latin America
17:23to Africa to wherever, and that is horrible.
17:28And we are going to have a horrible time, however people around the world are opening
17:32their eyes, so they said the Biden's administration was pretty lousy, but this one is going to
17:38be worse.
17:39What are we going to do?
17:44I think the good thing is that we are opening our eyes and we are uniting as we are here
17:52in Havana.
17:53Thus, we will face together what is coming now with that bad administration.
