The past few days have had it all – intense heat, strong winds, driving rain, and even hail. Temperatures climbed into the 40s in parts of the city and several regional areas. But a southerly change this afternoon has brought some much-welcome relief.

00:00From the fury of an overnight storm, to one of the hottest days of summer so far, NSW
00:11has endured the true might of Mother Nature over the last 24 hours.
00:16I've been in Australia 50 something years, and the weather, never known weather like
00:24this.
00:25And the wave pool in Sydney's Olympic Park was the place to be, as the city and the west
00:31sweltered through temperatures of up to 43 degrees.
00:34It's heckers.
00:35That's what you do on the holidays?
00:36Tell you how hot it is, I put the air conditioning on before I left home today, I don't normally
00:40do that.
00:41That's saying something.
00:43Thousands of others opted for the natural swell, hitting beaches up and down Sydney's
00:48coastline.
00:51Making a splash in central NSW, the otters of Dubbo Zoo found their relief with an icy
00:57treat.
00:58While those on the tools near Newcastle also did their best to stay hydrated.
01:05Some are embracing the newest way to cool off in the west, here at the man-made Putney
01:09Beach.
01:10The timing couldn't be better for locals, with the swimming spot along the Parramatta
01:14River opening just last week.
01:17It's very beautiful and I like it when it's kind of warm.
01:22And just like yesterday, the blistering heat came to a crashing conclusion.
01:27The mercury dropping around 15 degrees in as many minutes as another storm rolled through
01:32with such a force, it left thousands without power on the central coast.
01:38Those gusts could really get up to 90 or 100 kilometres an hour.
01:42A welcome cool change, but another likely clean-up after a second night of wild weather.
