Extreme heat conditions hitting parts of the east coast over the November 23-24, 2024 weekend.
Transcript
00:00Hello, from the Bureau it is Friday the 22nd of November and southeastern Australia is
00:05gripped by a heatwave at the moment, the first for the warm season so far, so let's get
00:10straight in and look at the temperatures that are causing the heatwave.
00:13Widespread 35 degrees plus across South Australia and Victoria, 34 degrees in Melbourne, central
00:19New South Wales copping some of the heat but it is cooler, or at least a bit more mild
00:23along the coast, 26 in Sydney and mild in Tasmania, mid-20s there.
00:29A key part of the story with the heatwave is a warm night tonight, Friday night into
00:33Saturday morning, warm temperatures as we kick off the weekend, these are the minimum
00:38overnight temperatures tonight, 23 degrees in Melbourne, some pretty stifling, uncomfortable
00:43sleeping conditions there and spare a thought for anyone in central SA where we could see
00:4727 or 28 degrees as the overnight minimum temperature there.
00:52Another hot day on Saturday, again Victoria seeing some of those warmest temperatures,
00:56up to 36 in Melbourne, high 20s for Tasmania, 37s and 38s through inland parts of New South
01:03Wales and still just a touch more mild along the coast, not cooled by any stretch with
01:0728 in many of those coastal locations.
01:10Sunday we do see slightly more mild temperatures for Tasmania, Victoria, South Australia, the
01:14heat really focuses in on central New South Wales and maybe some of those 30 degree temperatures
01:20do reach the eastern coastline.
01:23Heatwaves are in place across the southeast, the yellow shading here is the low intensity
01:26heatwave, now we don't have warnings for low intensity heatwaves but it does say that we're
01:31in that prolonged stretch of warm days and warm nights across Victoria, southern New
01:35South Wales, parts of elevated Tasmania as well.
01:38The warnings come into play for this here, orange severe intensity heatwaves and that's
01:43mostly focused on the southeastern corner, for Victoria that's the East Gippsland region
01:48and for New South Wales, that is the south coast and snowy mountain regions and we've
01:53got severe heatwave warnings in place for those three districts.
01:57With the hot conditions also comes some elevated fire danger, for Friday we've got extreme
02:02fire danger in parts of western and central South Australia with widespread high fire
02:06danger elsewhere and then on Saturday, parts of northwestern Victoria, the Mallee and the
02:11Wimmera could see extreme fire danger too with moderate to high fire dangers elsewhere.
02:16It would be good to see what's coming after the heat because we've got this few days of
02:20warm weather, then we get the cooling but as the cooling arrives it comes in with a
02:24reasonably significant band of rain and we're expecting to see that build in western SA
02:29on Saturday, spread across South Australia during the day on Saturday with this rain
02:33crossing Adelaide sometime during the afternoon and evening, then the rain arrives in western
02:38Victoria, then Sunday we'll see the wet weather spread across Victoria.
02:42It comes in with the cooler conditions as well, we're not expecting a really nasty frigid
02:47change to cold weather but it certainly takes us from way above average back to around about
02:52average as the wind changes direction and the rain arrives.
02:56It could be a fairly wet weekend actually, all said and told, particularly across parts
03:01of SA, 30-50mm possible in some areas which are typically quite dry, so a wet day Saturday
03:07there, then Sunday some of the rain affects parts of Victoria with potentially more on
03:12the way early next week.
03:14So you're really getting a taste of the heat, then a taste of the wet across southeastern
03:18Australia in the next few days.
03:19So pretty dynamic forecast, do stay up to date with the latest forecasts and warnings
03:23on the Bureau website and app.
03:25Thanks for watching and have a great weekend.
