00:00So, much of southeast Australia will see a run of very hot days and warm nights over
00:06this weekend, but of course across Victoria we do have ongoing bushfires, including the
00:10one in the Grampians, and with that heat also does come elevated fire dangers.
00:14So, South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania and much of New South Wales will see temperatures
00:18really spiking over the weekend, reaching the mid to high 30s for many places, even
00:22low 40s for some inland parts.
00:25But thankfully we aren't expecting to see those bad widespread fire conditions that
00:29we did see through Boxing Day, but still reminding people to keep an eye on the latest
00:33fire advice, especially as there are still ongoing fires.
00:35But tomorrow we are expecting to see extreme fire dangers for the Wimmera District in Western
00:39Victoria, that's where the Grampians is, and as those temperatures climb up into the
00:42mid to high 30s, we are reminding people first of all to take care with those conditions,
00:47but we could see those conditions really start to spike across Western Victoria and also
00:50eastern parts of South Australia.
00:53This weekend there was also a concern for dry lightning, particularly on Sunday, and
00:57with the very dry conditions around Western Victoria and southeast South Australia, there
01:01is also the possibility of dry lightning spiking new ignitions across the landscape.
01:05So you will see heatwave conditions across New South Wales and the ACT.
01:08For Sydney, we will see temperatures spiking on Sunday and Monday, reaching the low 30s
01:13across the eastern suburbs.
01:14Western Sydney will see the temperatures reaching the high 30s over a number of days, and Sydney
01:18won't see the cool change until late Monday night into Tuesday morning.
01:21So for much of southeast Australia, it will very much be a two to three day heatwave event.
01:27The numbers have come up for 2024, and the Bureau will be releasing those state-by-state
01:31looks in the coming few days and weeks, but for Australia as a whole, it was the second
01:35warmest year on record, just behind 2019.
01:38Queensland in particular was very hot, that was their hottest year on record.
01:41For the rest of summer, we are expecting to see these high daytime temperatures continue,
01:45with pretty much the entire country expected to see above average daytime temperatures,
01:50also some very warm nights as well.
01:51So this is the first heatwave of the new year for many people, so we do remind people to
01:55take care and stay cool however they can.
