Severe heatwave to hit several states and territories across the country

Senior meteorologist Dean Narramore says it will cover a huge area of central and eastern Australia.

00:00We're severe to even locally extreme heatwave conditions extending from the Northern Territory

00:07through much of Western and Southern Queensland, much of Northern and Eastern South Australia

00:12and pretty much the entire state of New South Wales and Victoria.

00:16Today the heat will focus through inland parts of the country and much of southern inland

00:21Australia from WA through to Victoria and New South Wales.

00:25Then on Sunday we'll see that heat really start to ramp up through South Australia and

00:29inland New South Wales with temperatures getting into the low to mid 40s.

00:34And then on Monday will be our hottest day through parts of Victoria and New South Wales

00:38with inland New South Wales looking at temperatures in the mid to high 40s with some locations

00:44forecasting 46 or 47 degrees and they could be December records for places like Wilcannia,

00:50Ivanhoe and also down to Narranda as well.

00:57And even for our capital cities we're looking at bursts of heat on Sunday in Adelaide 40

01:01degrees, Monday in Melbourne 41 and Western Sydney 41 on Tuesday.

01:07But eastern parts of New South Wales right on the coastal fringe will have sea breeze

01:11saving them from the hottest temperatures.

01:13It's pretty widespread.

01:15How long is this heatwave expected to last?

01:20Yeah we're going to see the heatwave really start ramping up today through much of those

01:24areas I just mentioned and continue through Sunday and Monday before we start to see relief

01:29in parts of southern WA from Sunday and then later on Monday through South Australia and

01:34then Tuesday we'll see much cooler conditions with parts of Victoria and southern New South

01:40Wales and then really clearing out of New South Wales on Wednesday.

01:43But the heat unfortunately will continue through western and southern Queensland and much of

01:48the Northern Territory right through next week.
