Relief on the way for heatwave-hit east coast.
Transcript
00:00A hot day ahead for NSW before a cool change moves through, bringing showers and the risk
00:06of severe storms to parts of the state over the next few days.
00:09Let's start by taking a look at today's forecast maximum temperatures, which show
00:13that heat through the east and north of the state in particular.
00:17Many areas expected to reach the mid to high 30s at least, pushing into the low 40s inland.
00:23But a cool change is on the way, it's moved through the southeastern parts of Australia
00:27in the past day or so, and is likely to sweep up the NSW coast in the next 24 hours, reaching
00:34Sydney most likely later this evening or into the overnight period.
00:39It's going to bring a significant temperature drop, a burst of fresh southerly winds and
00:43of course increasing rainfall.
00:47At the moment we're already seeing showers, rain areas and thunderstorms developing mostly
00:51across Victoria, but through the course of this afternoon we will see that wet weather
00:56increasing across parts of central and southern NSW, particularly through the south east of the state.
01:03As that low pressure trough brings the cool change up the NSW coast, we'll see rainfall
01:07shifting northwards, increasing across north eastern parts of the state and through areas
01:13like the Hunter.
01:15In fact as we move through Tuesday evening and into Wednesday, we're likely to see a
01:19low pressure trough deepening off the north coast of NSW, with a possible low pressure
01:25system developing as well.
01:27Now exactly when this trough starts to deepen and exactly how close it moves to the coast
01:31will determine the locations of the heaviest rainfall, but at this point in time that's
01:36most likely through those north eastern and central eastern parts of NSW, or where thunderstorms develop.
01:43Let's take a look at our thunderstorm risk for today now.
01:47So thunderstorms are possible in our green areas on this map, covering most of NSW, parts
01:52of South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania as well.
01:56We do have severe storms possible today, this yellow contour you see here.
02:00It covers the central and southern tablelands of NSW and parts of the Illawarra, and in
02:05these areas severe storms may bring heavy rainfall that could lead to flash flooding
02:09through the course of this afternoon and evening.
02:12Now damaging wind gusts are also possible, but less likely than the heavy rainfall.
02:16For anyone living in or travelling through these areas, we urge you to keep a close eye
02:20on the radar this afternoon and check the Bureau's warnings page in case we do need
02:24to issue warnings for storms in these parts, as heavy rainfall can quickly lead to flash
02:30flooding and dangerous driving conditions.
02:33As we move into Tuesday, we're going to see that storm risk becoming a little bit more
02:37extensive across central and eastern parts of the state, with storms possible across
02:42much of the east coast.
02:45Severe storms will once again be a risk, but for Tuesday that's mostly covering parts
02:50of inland NSW, the western slopes and central ranges.
02:54Now damaging wind gusts and large hail are possible with these severe storms on Tuesday.
03:00Locally heavy falls remain a risk however, particularly about some of the western slopes
03:04and ranges.
03:06As we move through Tuesday and Wednesday and see that rain really increasing through the
03:10northeastern parts of the state, we're going to move into further showery weather for the
03:15end of the week.
03:17We're likely to see the trough lingering close to the NSW coast, even through Thursday
03:21and Friday.
03:23It is likely to direct further rainfall against the coast.
03:26At this stage it's looking like scattered to widespread showers through the Thursday
03:30and Friday period, with generally moderate rainfall totals.
03:34However if it does track closer to the coast, or we see that risk of thunderstorms increasing,
03:38we may still see some localised heavy falls and flash flooding, particularly across parts
03:43of the northern and central coastlines.
03:45It is a good idea to keep a close eye on the forecast as this situation unfolds.
03:50You can find all of that information via the Bureau's website, via our social media and
03:54via the BOM app.
03:55Stay safe and we'll catch you in the next update.
