00:07:40Hello everyone, we are very happy to see you again this season for the coverage of the National Skating Championships 2025 event in Canada.
00:07:50Tonight, we will cover the short program at the Junior Skating Couple.
00:07:55Of course, you can find the live broadcast of our French-speaking coverage of the National Championships on the Skating Canada website.
00:08:03But it is also possible that if you ever listen to this on the web, to have the help of the Skatebug Radio.
00:08:10So it's a small transmitter that allows you to enjoy our analysis and our comments if you are directly in the arena.
00:08:17If you plan to sit on site in the next few days at the competition, you can get it at the Canadian Skating Merchandise Kiosk.
00:08:23And what's good about the Skatebug is that once it's yours, you can take advantage of it for the next Canadian Skating Championships.
00:08:30So it's really a great tool, a great resource to always be aware of our comments.
00:08:46Good afternoon and welcome to Place Belle in Laval, Quebec, host of the 2025 Canadian National Skating Championships.
00:08:54In just a few moments, we will start the Junior Pair Short Program.

00:10:20And Nanny Guzmo.

00:10:49Go hard.
00:10:52Go hard.

00:10:54Yeah.
00:10:57Go hard.
00:11:17Go hard.
00:11:19Yeah.
00:11:20Yeah.
00:11:21Go hard.
00:11:23So, hello everyone. The event of the short program at the junior couples who are about to start.
00:11:32Charlie, we were talking together about the very high level of the competition.
00:11:38The majority of the couples who have made the Junior Grand Prix, who are in the competition today,
00:11:44with the exception of Jasmine Desrochers and Kieran Trasher, who have decided to compete as seniors at the national level.
00:11:51We remind you that, however, they are still eligible for the international junior category.
00:11:58This means that they are still in the process of entering the three Junior World Championships, which will take place in Hungary.
00:12:07Yes, and honestly, the caliber of these skaters is very impressive today.
00:12:12Yes, the number is not high, we only have 5 skaters, 5 skating couples here at the national championships.
00:12:20But of these 5 couples, we have 3 couples who participated in the final of the Junior Grand Prix during the past years,
00:12:29either last year or the year before.
00:12:33So, Martina, Ariano Kent and Charlie La Liberté-Laurent, who are in this group of skaters, the first warm-up group,
00:12:41due to an injury that prevented them from participating in the challenge.
00:12:45Ah, and that, not only in the challenge, an injury that completely shattered their season.
00:12:51It's their first competition this year, a pretty incredible and unfortunate story.
00:12:57An injury, a tear in the labrum on the side of Charlie La Liberté-Laurent.
00:13:03He was operated on last June in France, since he was able to have a place for his treatment,
00:13:10and also to be readapted in France for the rest of the operation.
00:13:17After that, early September, we go back on the ice.
00:13:20And I spoke to the coach, Marc-André Craig, a little earlier today.
00:13:24They started redoing the period, the period only a few weeks ago, 4 weeks ago.
00:13:36So, really, a start of the season for them, it's incredible.
00:13:42Whereas at the Junior Grand Prix final last year, they came in fourth.
00:13:50So, the first couple to skate, because they don't have any results yet this year,
00:13:55but a couple with a lot of potential.
00:13:59I say potential, but in fact, they prove it to us at each competition,
00:14:03that they are among the best in Canada.
00:14:06So, Steelback and Gavin Mahoney, who finished third in the Canada Skate Challenge last December.
00:14:15Yes, the only couple who has no experience in international competitions,
00:14:20in the five couples that we will see today in the short program.
00:14:25It's their first year in the junior category.
00:14:28And so, for this couple, the main objective, yes, is to improve their ranking,
00:14:34to improve their score, but above all, to go and get the technical score
00:14:39to have access to the junior international assignments.
00:14:42Since, yes, there is a minimum of technique to be respected,
00:14:46and this score is 63 points in the short program and the free program.
00:14:51But when we say 63 points, it's really only at the technical level.
00:14:56And so, we remove the artistic note of the two programs, and we must have 63 points.
00:15:02At the technical level, in the junior category,
00:15:05the skaters in a couple can sometimes have gaps between the teams,
00:15:10because of the duration of the partnership, how long they skate together.
00:15:16It still takes a few years to perfect the couple elements.
00:15:22That's for sure, the couple elements.
00:15:26We see several skaters who, after a simple career, turn to couple skating,
00:15:34but we also see some skaters who start the couple together and develop mutually
00:15:40and learn the basics of couple skating.
00:15:44It certainly takes several years.
00:15:48Sometimes we have exceptions, people who really find the touch of the dynamics of couple skating
00:15:56later in their careers.
00:15:59But in general, yes, we still see that the experience makes a good difference.
00:16:08So, Charlie, could you tell me a little more about the composition of the short programs
00:16:12for the couple skating programs?
00:16:16By the way, on the screen, we see here the couple executing the spiral of death,
00:16:21rear, exterior.
00:16:23This is a requirement of the short program this year.
00:16:26So, the short program, 2 minutes and 50 seconds, with seven elements.
00:16:30The pole vault, what we just saw on the screen, on Charlie's side,
00:16:34the liberty of Martina Ariano-Kent.
00:16:37After that, side-by-side jump, an imposed jump among juniors.
00:16:41Among seniors, we choose the jump we want,
00:16:44in the junior category, it's an imposed jump, and this year it's the axel.
00:16:47So, we're going to see the couples jump in the double axel.
00:16:50After that, reach of group 4.
00:16:53So, required reach of group 4, hand-to-hand group.
00:16:58So, we're going to see all the skaters do this element.
00:17:02Side-by-side pirouette, jump and the pole vault sequence.
00:17:08Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was told that one of the most difficult elements
00:17:14to master in the couple passage is the pole vault.
00:17:18Yes, I totally agree with that.
00:17:22After that, each person has the strong elements,
00:17:26where they have more or less difficulty.
00:17:29But in general, I would say, yes, the pole vault is the most complicated element
00:17:37to develop, to improve and to find its ease through the different couple elements.
00:17:43Obviously, the rotation is horizontal.
00:17:46Instead of being vertical, it destabilizes the skaters a lot.
00:17:49Yes, as much on the part of the partner who is in the air,
00:17:53who, as you say, is really more horizontally turning,
00:17:58but also on the part of the man to transfer the energy from vertical
00:18:05to horizontal, i.e. the displacement of the ice in speed in the air,
00:18:10by launching the partner.
00:18:12This is also a dynamic that takes a lot of time to really look for the little things
00:18:18that allow us to optimize the height, to optimize all that.
00:18:24And not a lot of room for error.
00:18:26No, the error is fatal in this element.
00:18:30And we also see it, precisely, among these five skaters,
00:18:34there are two who have suffered serious injuries during this season and previous seasons.
00:18:40So, couple skating is a fairly hard discipline on the body
00:18:46and you have to be extremely careful to be sure to stay a couple
00:18:51that is part of the mix from year to year.
00:18:55So, our first team from Quebec, Martina Arellano-Kent and Charlie de la Liberté-Laurent.
00:19:03They train on the direction of Marc-André Craig.
00:19:06Their program runs on the music of I'm Gonna Be, 500 Miles by Joey Russell.
00:19:24When I wake up, I know I'm gonna be I'm gonna be the man who wakes up next to you
00:19:44And when I go out, I know I'm gonna be I'm gonna be the man who goes along with you
00:19:54And when I come home, yeah, I know I'm gonna be I'm gonna be the man who's coming home to you
00:20:05And when I'm dreaming, well, I know I'm gonna dream I'm gonna dream about the time when I'm with you
00:20:16And I would walk 500 miles And I would walk 500 more
00:20:24Just to be in the middle of the world A thousand miles to fall down at your door
00:20:45I would walk 500 miles And I would walk 500 more
00:21:07Just to be in the middle of the world A thousand miles To fall down at your door
00:21:37And I would walk 500 miles And I would walk 500 more
00:21:51Just to be in the middle of the world A thousand miles To fall down at your door
00:25:43Shoot.
00:25:46Shoot.
00:25:52He wear no shoes, son, he got
00:25:55Toe jam, football, he got
00:25:58Mug your finger, he shoot
00:26:01Coca-Cola, he say
00:26:03I know you, you know me
00:26:09One thing I can tell you is you've got to be free
00:26:14Come together, right now

00:27:01Shoot
00:27:04Shoot
00:27:06Oh, shoot
00:27:09Oh, shoot
00:27:36Come together, right now
00:27:42Oh, shoot
00:27:46Shoot
00:27:49Shoot
00:27:51Shoot
00:27:53Oh, shoot
00:27:56CHEERING
00:36:01Je me disais, il me semble que lorsque j'étais junior,

00:40:51de 47,57
00:40:53qui avaient eu un pointage de 47,57
00:40:55qui avaient eu un pointage de 47,57
00:40:57qui avaient eu un pointage de 47,57
00:40:59qui avaient eu un pointage de 47,57
00:41:01au Défi de patinage Canada
00:41:03Ils vont essayer de venir
00:41:05encore une fois augmenter
00:41:07cette marque
00:41:09leur objectif était
00:41:11de ne pas se comparer
00:41:13aux autres patineurs et également
00:41:15d'augmenter la vitesse
00:41:17Et ici on voit le porte-évrier en ouverture
00:41:19Pas beaucoup de hauteur malheureusement
00:41:21Certainement un élément à travailler
00:41:23pour ce couple
00:41:25Mais une exécution quand même
00:41:27Bien
00:41:35Une main
00:41:37Pour Étienne
00:41:39Et puis sortie difficile
00:41:41On va chercher un niveau 4
00:41:43dans le porté
00:41:45Ici le double axel
00:41:47Et on a eu peur un peu
00:41:49On a senti dans les airs
00:41:51un léger débalancement
00:41:53Mais on a tenu bon
00:41:55Ici malheureusement
00:41:57la spirale de la mort
00:41:59qui manquait un peu de rotation
00:42:01Donc
00:42:03niveau 2 seulement
00:42:05Mais somme toute
00:42:31Donc 50.34
00:42:33pour Noemi Roland et Étienne Lacaze
00:42:35qui augmentent donc
00:42:37d'environ 3 points leur marque
00:42:39lors des défis de Patinage Canada
00:42:41Ce qui les place provisoirement
00:42:43Provisoirement
00:42:45Provisoirement, merci Charlie

00:46:09An incredible performance for Eva Kim and Jonathan Elizarov,
00:46:13our junior title champions,
00:46:15who come here to defend their position.
00:46:19Ah yes, junior title champions in Canada,
00:46:23but they were also the vice-champions of the Grand Prix final in 2023-2024.
00:46:31So, really an experienced couple on the international scene
00:46:37and there were two previous seasons really in Dantzig because of several injuries,
00:46:43but we are very happy to see them again in good health here at the Nationals.
00:46:48Here we just saw the double axel side-by-side.
00:46:51A little bit of distance between the two partners, but executed with great quality.
00:46:58Here, the death spiral, which unfortunately, the position of the partner
00:47:06was not sufficiently held near the ice,
00:47:10and so we end up with a level 1 in the element.
00:47:15Here, very nice range.
00:47:17We really feel Jonathan in solid confidence all along the range,
00:47:23in his footwork too, turning, doing rotations all along the ice.
00:47:29Also, the twisted range, we were talking about it together,
00:47:33we hadn't seen it yet until now.
00:47:35Yes, we hadn't seen it yet until now,
00:47:37but the previous skaters, for some, they are capable.
00:47:41I think mainly of Martina and Charlie,
00:47:44but as we know, the circumstances that have just resumed training.
00:47:50Here is the first triple twisted range that we have just seen for these skaters,
00:47:55and Ava and Jonathan, who will be accompanied by Martina and Charlie
00:48:00for the Bavarian Open competition in Germany from January 20 to 26.
00:48:05So, well, these two couples are leaving for Germany in a few days.
00:48:12And then, of course, we hope for a place on the World Junior Team for this couple.
00:48:21So, the score for the short program, 59.49.
00:48:26We can see that the two skaters are satisfied,
00:48:29a little below what they did at the Canada Skate Championships,
00:48:34but a good five points ahead for tomorrow's long program.
00:48:39We dig the scores, we tell the others, it's us, the champions.
00:48:43So, our last team today,
00:48:47Julian Quachoki and Simon Desmarais from Quebec.
00:48:52They train at the Rose-Mère school.
00:48:56Their coaches, Stéphanie Valois and Annie Barabé,
00:48:58will skate their short program on a song,
00:49:01Never Tear Us Apart, choreographed by David Wilson.
00:49:10Never Tear Us Apart
00:49:24Don't ask me what you know is true
00:49:30Don't have to tell you I love your precious heart
00:49:38I was standing there
00:49:44You were there
00:49:47Two worlds collided
00:49:51And they could never tear us apart
00:49:57Never Tear Us Apart
00:50:04We could live
00:50:08For a thousand years
00:50:11But if I hurt you
00:50:15I'd make my own vows
00:50:19I told you
00:50:23If we could fly
00:50:26Cause we'd all have wings
00:50:30Some of us don't know why
00:50:37I was standing there
00:50:41You were there
00:50:44Two worlds collided
00:50:48And they could never tear us apart
00:51:18Never Tear Us Apart
00:51:33I was standing there
00:51:39You were there
00:51:42Two worlds collided
00:51:46And they could never
00:51:49Never
00:51:51Never
00:51:52Tear Us Apart
00:52:16We've had a few clashes in a few places.
00:52:20Clashes that cost a lot of points, unfortunately.
00:52:24But really, a couple that I love to see skating,
00:52:28getting started together.
00:52:30An intoxicating choreography.
00:52:33We really see them as accomplices throughout the program.
00:52:37Unfortunately, that's it.
00:52:39Moments where we felt them far away from each other,
00:52:42like during the side-by-side pirouette,
00:52:45at the end of the death spiral.
00:52:48A bit of an imbalance too,
00:52:50but an excellent enduro.
00:52:53Here, the side-by-side pirouette, double axel.
00:52:57Superbly executed.
00:52:59Here, look at the effort that Simon had to make.
00:53:03He said, no, not today.
00:53:05It's not true that I'm going to do a porté
00:53:08that won't go all the way.
00:53:10These are the results of the gym.
00:53:12Yes.
00:53:15And here, a nice jump thrown by Julia.
00:53:19Triple salchow.
00:53:21Here, unfortunately, we were only able to do
00:53:24a rotation in a pivot position,
00:53:26and the exit, a little hook.
00:53:30And here, that's what I was saying earlier,
00:53:32a side-by-side pirouette.
00:53:34A bit of a lack of unison in the rotation,
00:53:37but also very far from each other.
00:53:42Unfortunately, these are small details
00:53:46that can sometimes prevent the judges
00:53:51from having the pencil a little heavier,
00:53:54if I may say so, to be generous in terms of points.
00:53:57But a nice performance, despite everything.
00:54:01Julia and Simon, who were medalists
00:54:04at the Junior Grand Prix this year,
00:54:07in addition to finishing 6th in a row.
00:54:09The Grand Prix final,
00:54:11that's a big step in a career, really.
00:54:14And to have three skaters,
00:54:16as I said a little earlier,
00:54:18three skaters from these couples
00:54:20who had experience in the Junior Grand Prix final.
00:54:23We see that we have a lot of potential in Canada
00:54:26for the rest of these skaters.
00:54:33They were 4th last year at the Canadian Championships,
00:54:38and certainly they are here this year
00:54:41to hope to get a place on the podium.
00:54:44In addition, Jasmine Desrochers and Kieran Trasher
00:54:48are no longer in the game.
00:54:50They were 3rd last year, now they are seniors.
00:54:53Their score last year, 46.77 in the short program.
00:54:59I can't wait to see their score this year.
00:55:04And a couple for whom this year is a tough year,
00:55:07since, as I said a little earlier,
00:55:09this is the last year where they are eligible
00:55:12in terms of age for the international junior competitions.
00:55:18Let's see the scores.
00:55:2048.9.
00:55:24They improved their score last year.
00:55:26They are currently in 4th position.
00:55:28That said, the scores are very tight.
00:55:30So 50, two people, two couples who have 50.
00:55:34So nothing is set in stone for tomorrow.
00:55:42And here we see the table of the 5 couples.
00:55:45Obviously, we have in 1st position
00:55:49Ava Kemp and Yonatan Elizarov,
00:55:52who are far ahead with 10 points ahead.
00:55:56In 2nd place, Noemi Etienne-Lacasse.
00:56:00In 2nd, 50 points.
00:56:02So I want to say, from 2nd to 5th,
00:56:07anything can happen tomorrow during the free program.
00:56:11A small mistake, a mistake,
00:56:13where we hang on to the execution,
00:56:16and then the table can change.
00:56:18We can see the podium stand differently
00:56:21at the end of the free program.
00:56:25We can see here on the screen
00:56:28the skaters who are in 3rd position.
00:56:34Martina Ariano-Kent and Charlie Laliberté,
00:56:38who, we remind you, are back after a serious injury for Charlie.
00:56:43First competition of the season.
00:56:46And in a few days, they fly to Germany
00:56:49for their first international junior assignment of the season.
00:56:54And we also wish them a place on the world junior team.
00:57:00Nice height in the jumpers.
00:57:03And it's a couple with quite strong technical elements.
00:57:07Obviously, today, with their training baggage,
00:57:11who actually started practicing a few elements
00:57:16only four weeks ago.
00:57:18So we kept a few elements for later.
00:57:22So we didn't want to throw the big guns right away.
00:57:27Here, Noémie Rolland and Etienne Lacasse in 2nd position.
00:57:32We just saw the triple salchow thrown.
00:57:35Superbly executed.
00:57:37With a nice landing glide.
00:57:43A couple who also has experience at the international level.
00:57:53And finally, our champions.
00:57:56At the end of the short program,
00:57:59Ava Kemp and Jonathan Elizarov.
00:58:05We just saw them execute the triple salchow.
00:58:10The only triple salchow we saw among this group of skaters.
00:58:15So that's what concludes the event of the short program
00:58:18at the Junior Couples at the 2025 Canadian Championships here in Laval.
00:58:23The long program continues tomorrow at 11h35.
00:58:27It's an appointment not to be missed.
00:58:29A big thank you, Charlie.
00:58:30It was a pleasure to host this competition with you.
00:58:32For my part, I will be back behind the microphone tomorrow
00:58:35for the event of the long program at the Junior Women.
