00:03:05Hello, everyone. Welcome to the 2025 Skate Canada National Skating Championships.
00:03:10Hello, everyone. Welcome to the 2025 Skate Canada National Skating Championships.
00:03:15I'm Ted Barton, your host, and in the studio, Kirsten Moore-Towers.
00:03:20I had Kevin Reynolds all the way from Auckland, New Zealand, and Caitlin Weaver from New York City.
00:03:25You're here in Vancouver. Thank you so much for joining us, Kirsten.
00:03:30A few fewer teams in the junior and senior categories, masses in the pre-novice and novice.
00:03:35That bodes very well for the future. Tell us a little bit about your thoughts on why there are fewer teams in the junior and senior, at least this season.
00:03:42You're right, Ted. On both points, there are very few teams here.
00:03:46Only five in the junior event. We'll see six in the senior event starting tomorrow.
00:03:50But as you mentioned, a ton of teams developing in the pre-novice and novice.
00:03:54It's hard to say why that is.
00:03:56Obviously, in figure skating, all disciplines go through lulls in the numbers that are progressing and are showing up at the junior and senior levels.
00:04:04I wonder how much the COVID hiatus had to do with the development of these teams a few years ago.
00:04:11But the great thing is, regardless of the size of the event, this is bound to be an exciting one.
00:04:17Interesting, because only one team out of these five competed on the Junior Grand Prix Circuit earlier this season.
00:04:24Two others, who were out with injury earlier in the season, are pushing to win this national title in the junior event.
00:04:32They are Martina Arellano-Kent and Charly Laliberté-Laurent, as well as Ava Kemp and Yonatan Elizarov.
00:04:39These two teams were fifth and sixth at Junior Worlds last season.
00:04:43Both will be wanting to earn a berth to that championship here as well.
00:04:49We can't forget about Julia Quattrocchi and Simon Desmarais.
00:04:53They qualified this season for the Junior Grand Prix Final.
00:04:56They were one of the Canadian contingency to compete there.
00:05:00I'd say it was a great experience for them.
00:05:02They had a great time, they learned a lot, and are hoping to bring all of those great experiences here with them.
00:05:09Just briefly, Canada has had a lot of success in ice dance, obviously, we know that.
00:05:13And also in para-skating, particularly in the Junior Grand Prix events, and also Senior World Champions, of course.
00:05:20Why is that happening? We may have less numbers in juniors this season, just lots coming up.
00:05:25But what has been Canada's success over the past few seasons?
00:05:28Canada has had incredible success.
00:05:31Last season, we saw three teams at the Junior Grand Prix Final.
00:05:34We, of course, have the Senior World Champions, who are Canadian, Diana Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps.
00:05:40And so, I think, though it's hard to create a pair team with longevity and great success,
00:05:45the ones that we have created in Canada really are showing up, getting the work done,
00:05:50creating great success and great leadership for these young pre-novice and novice teams to follow.
00:05:56And they have role models to look up to.
00:05:58Well, Kirsten, as you said, anybody can win this event.
00:06:01We have two teams that have been out for a little while.
00:06:03It's going to be so exciting coming into the Junior Pairs Short Program.
00:06:07And who knows what's going to happen.
00:06:10Up next, the Junior Pairs Short.

00:15:11Charlie actually got surgery for a shoulder injury in France, because he could get the
00:15:16surgery sooner there, and Martina waited for him very patiently to be able to come back
00:15:22so that they could complete the second half of this season together.
00:15:25And I suppose not only in para-skating, of course, in all of our sport, having the patience
00:15:31to get through an injury, particularly if you're the athlete who's injured, to not be
00:15:34able to do what you love to do and what you do every day, you have to have a lot of patience.
00:15:39You have to be patient on both partners for this.
00:15:43When you're the injured skater, I think your whole job becomes how to recover quickly and
00:15:48efficiently so that you can be at 100% health and stay healthy and not rush it so that the
00:15:56injury creeps back in.
00:15:57And also for the partner who is healthy, it can be incredibly challenging to skate on
00:16:01your own when you're used to skating with somebody else and doing such a myriad of different
00:16:06elements.
00:16:07Martina and Charlie had a great debut season on the Junior Grand Prix, of course, and having
00:16:12some time off now with that injury, you know, is it difficult to come back to what you hoped
00:16:18would be the same level, if not better?
00:16:20I think it can be.
00:16:21I think it really depends on how you're managed by your coaching team.
00:16:25And I spoke to Martina and Charlie's coaches, and Coach Marc-Andre Craig said that by prioritizing
00:16:31their well-being and long-term development, they chose to focus on less complex elements
00:16:35to maximize their quality and their foundational development, and I think we're going to see
00:16:40how that benefits them.
00:16:42We will only see a double twist from them this week, where we're accustomed to them
00:16:45doing the triple, and to compete with the top teams in the world, Ted, they must do
00:16:50a triple twist.
00:16:51But this is the point where they're at, at this stage of the season, they will hope to
00:16:56qualify for the Junior World Championships, where they will want to put that triple twist
00:16:59back in.
00:17:00So it's fair to say, in a short period of time here, they're in a rebuilding process
00:17:05for this season, to get ready, potentially, for a Junior World spot.
00:17:09Absolutely, that's the hope for them.
00:17:11They've kept both of their programs from last season.
00:17:14The strategy behind that choice was so that they could re-enter the training atmosphere
00:17:19and competition atmosphere, and not have too much overwhelming stuff in their peripherals
00:17:25to get back to full strength.
00:17:27There we saw a beautiful back-outside death spiral from this team.
00:17:31You mentioned, is this their first big competition of the season?
00:17:34This is their first competition in general, this season.
00:17:36We have not seen them yet.
00:17:38Wow.
00:17:39Okay, that's a biggie.
00:17:40The first time out, this year, is at the National Championship.
00:17:44Absolutely.
00:17:45Their coaches say they've been training strong, they really just hope that training translates
00:17:50into competition, but, of course, simulating a competition in practice is very challenging.
00:17:56There's so much that goes into this that is really difficult to practice at home, and
00:18:00So, we'll see how they fare with the adrenaline and competition nerves for the first time
00:18:05this year.
00:18:06Yeah, exactly.
00:18:07Hard to simulate emotions.
00:18:08That's right.
00:18:09Because they pile on at the moment.
00:18:10You don't train in an environment like this, the National Championship, you're the only
00:18:13ones on the ice, about to take the ice, for a year-short program.
00:18:19They do train in Chambly, not too far from Place Belle in Laval, so hopefully and very
00:18:26likely they'll have family and friends and lots of people in the building cheering them
00:18:29on here today.
00:18:37We'll see in the short program today, from all teams, a double or triple twist.
00:18:43We'll see a side-by-side double flip or double axel, a throw double or triple saucow, any
00:18:48group four lift, which we'll talk about further, that back-outside death spiral, and a step
00:18:53sequence.
00:18:54Okay, there you go.
00:18:57Martina started skating at the age of eight, a little bit later than normal, and Charlie
00:19:01at the age of three.
00:19:02And here we go.
00:19:03The first team, from Quebec, 17-year-old Martina Ariel, Kent, and 19-year-old Charlie-Eve-Lau-Petit-Laurent.
00:19:04There they are.
00:19:05They didn't compete this year.
00:19:06This is it, the first time out, coached by Marc-André Kray, and choreographed in the
00:19:20short program by Jory Russell.
00:19:22Skating to I'm Gonna Be.
00:19:25I'm gonna be the man who wakes up next to you.
00:19:30I'm gonna be the man who wakes up next to you.
00:19:35I'm gonna be the man who wakes up next to you.
00:19:38I'm gonna be the man who wakes up next to you.
00:19:41I'm gonna be the man who wakes up next to you.
00:19:44I'm gonna be the man who wakes up next to you.
00:19:47I'm gonna be the man who wakes up next to you.
00:19:50I'm gonna be the man who wakes up next to you.
00:19:53I'm gonna be the man who wakes up next to you.
00:19:56And when I go out, I know I'm gonna be, I'm gonna be the man who goes along with you.
00:20:05And when I come home, yeah, I know I'm gonna be, I'm gonna be the man who's coming home
00:20:14to you.
00:20:15And when I'm dreaming, well, I know I'm gonna dream, I'm gonna dream about the time when
00:20:23I'm with you.
00:20:26And I would walk 500 miles, and I would walk 500 more just to be in the middle of the world
00:20:38with a thousand miles to fall down at your door.
00:20:44And I would walk 500 miles.

00:29:04You can see her
00:29:07fight
00:29:10ng character
00:29:13You can see
00:29:16turns, prioritizing safety, which is of course paramount
00:29:19and the utmost importance.
00:29:21But of course, here, the side-by-side double flip,
00:29:25of course, when we see some of the more experienced
00:29:27junior teams, they will go much faster
00:29:29and more confident through these elements.
00:29:32Here, the back outside death spiral.
00:29:35In at a base, I'm interested to see when Gavin
00:29:38started bending his arm that was attached to Bella.
00:29:41As soon as he bends his arm, the death spiral
00:29:43is considered as over.
00:29:45But I do see the death spirals in at a level base,
00:29:48so they are earning points for that element,
00:29:50which is great for where they're at at this time.
00:29:57So overall, this is a good performance for them.
00:29:59First year out of novice and junior.
00:30:02We'll take a look at the scores,
00:30:03but certainly experienced gauge here.
00:30:0541.28, that is second in the short program.
00:30:09Second team out, three more to come.
00:30:16And it's really the coach's job to keep their expectations
00:30:20and keep them grounded, because it's a long journey.
00:30:23There's a lot of ups and downs,
00:30:24and you want to keep them motivated for getting better
00:30:27and continuing to move forward with their partnership.
00:30:30Here is one of the next three teams.
00:30:36So the more experienced.
00:30:38And the last group, Juniors.
00:30:44From Quebec, you meet Roland and Etienne Nakas.
00:30:47And these skaters, the Juniors,
00:30:50three program winners here today.
00:30:51In the cap, Jonathan and Iserov from Ontario.
00:30:56And also from Quebec, Julia Kotoki and Sima Desmarais.
00:31:05We talked about a little earlier
00:31:07about those athletes in two disciplines.
00:31:09And of course, Etienne was in the Junior Men's free program
00:31:14a little earlier today.
00:31:15We also have a junior woman,
00:31:17or no, an ice dancer in the synchronized free program
00:31:21a little bit later this afternoon.
00:31:22So she skated the free dance and will do the free skate
00:31:25in the synchronized junior category.
00:31:28I think that's fantastic, especially at young ages,
00:31:30when you try to experience as many disciplines
00:31:33that figure skating has to offer and see what sticks,
00:31:36and see where you feel most passionate
00:31:38and that your skillset really allows you to thrive.
00:31:42And I think opportunity can only benefit these athletes
00:31:45in the well-roundedness that they'll bring
00:31:47to all of their skating.
00:31:54This is an exciting group, Ted.
00:31:55I'm interested to see these teams.
00:31:57We're looking at Eva Kemp and Yonatan Elizarov.
00:32:00The first time we saw them this season
00:32:02was at the challenge event last month.
00:32:04And at that event,
00:32:05they really were just approaching full strength.
00:32:08I spoke to coach Kevin Daw,
00:32:10and he mentioned that they're skating as strong as ever.
00:32:14So he's looking forward to their competition.
00:32:16This week there, we just saw a double twist
00:32:18from Noemi and Etienne.
00:32:24Well, the fans found the camera.
00:32:31Nice to see some people in the building.
00:32:32Yeah, and there'll be a lot more
00:32:34as the event continues to unfold
00:32:36throughout the five days of coverage
00:32:38of the National Skating Championship.
00:32:42Here, Noemi and Etienne again.
00:32:44They're a part of a large pair school
00:32:46at Excellence Rosemere.
00:32:49Training mates Julia and Simon
00:32:51also in this warmup group in junior pairs.
00:32:54Here, setting up for their throw saucao.
00:32:57They're just a double.
00:32:58They'll hope to cleanly land a throw triple saucao
00:33:01in their short program today.
00:33:04What are the must-have elements
00:33:05for international competition
00:33:07for the Junior World Swap spots?
00:33:10That's a great question, Ted.
00:33:11I mean, surely the top teams in the world
00:33:13will do two throw triples.
00:33:15They'll do side-by-side double axel
00:33:17and a side-by-side triple,
00:33:18and they'll do a triple twist.
00:33:20They're looking at a double twist from Ava and Yonatan.
00:33:27I think the biggest difference that we see
00:33:29with the top teams in the world
00:33:31is that they complete these elements,
00:33:32but the elements are merely a contribution
00:33:36or a part to the bigger story
00:33:38that is told within the program,
00:33:40and that can be a difficult sort of feat to achieve
00:33:43as you're developing in pair skating.
00:33:46These elements are extremely difficult for these teams,
00:33:48and so a lot of the focus and emphasis
00:33:51gets put on cleanly and safely doing these elements,
00:33:55and we don't see a lot of focus
00:33:58on tying that into the storytelling yet,
00:34:02but as we mentioned, the top teams in the world will do that
00:34:05and some of the top teams, top junior teams in Canada
00:34:08are starting to do that as well.
00:34:09Even in the seniors, it takes the top world champions
00:34:13and Olympians before they really gain the quality
00:34:17of a storytelling plus the technical difficulty
00:34:20because this is so physical.
00:34:22That's right.
00:34:23Yeah.
00:34:28Here, Julia and Simon,
00:34:30they qualified for the Junior Grand Prix Final this season.
00:34:34There with their coaches, Yvain Desjardins on the right,
00:34:37Stephanie Ballois in the middle,
00:34:38and Annie Barabay on the left.
00:34:41Spoke a little bit about their pair school
00:34:43at Excellence Rosemere.
00:34:44They also have actually quite successful singles program
00:34:47at that school as well, very well-rounded.
00:34:49Well known mostly as singles,
00:34:51and they just started the pairs a number of years ago
00:34:53and have done a wonderful job
00:34:54of building a number of pair teams into prominence.
00:34:59You're right.
00:35:00Coach Stephanie Ballois said they all train together
00:35:02and she really feels like it increases the positive energy
00:35:06and great atmosphere and the leadership
00:35:09within the school is superb,
00:35:11and so it's nice to see that.
00:35:13Really, all teams are improving when all teams improve.
00:35:16When you see your training mates
00:35:19successfully landing a new element
00:35:21or doing a clean program,
00:35:22it only increases the inspiration and the motivation
00:35:25for you to want to do the same thing.
00:35:27It is difficult to train by yourself.
00:35:28You can do it, but it takes a special person,
00:35:30that's for sure.
00:35:31That's right.
00:35:33Here looking at Ava and Yanni's lift.
00:35:37Talked a little bit about their injury early in the season.
00:35:40It was a little bit frustrating for the team.
00:35:42They felt like they could come back
00:35:44and then were faced with setbacks a little bit,
00:35:46and so only got to full strength,
00:35:47as I mentioned, in December,
00:35:49but Coach Kevin Da, who we see there on the right,
00:35:53mentions that they really are skating very strong.
00:35:56They're back to full strength.
00:35:57They're doing all of their elements again,
00:35:59where we saw somewhat of a downgrade of content from them
00:36:02at their first competition of the season,
00:36:04so I'm looking forward to seeing
00:36:06what they're able to show us today.
00:36:10There is a look at the start order for the final three
00:36:12in the Junior Pair Short Program.
00:36:17As we said, it's 5.54 in Montreal,
00:36:29and so more fans are coming into the building,
00:36:31which is great.
00:36:32You know, skating in front of fans,
00:36:34that just juices you up.
00:36:36It really helps.
00:36:36It really has an impact on the skaters.
00:36:39Most skaters, I think, really benefit from the energy
00:36:43that the fans and supporters bring to them on the ice,
00:36:45and it can help you through a bad day,
00:36:48and it can encourage you through a good one, really.
00:36:50There's no downside to that,
00:36:51and I know the skaters and even the viewers
00:36:54appreciate the energy that the fans bring to the building.
00:36:58See a pretty full building on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday,
00:37:02and hopefully a growing audience tomorrow as well.
00:37:09Skaters, the walk of time has ended.
00:37:11Final three.
00:37:12Please leave the ice.
00:37:26Please welcome the next competitors.
00:37:29Please welcome the Quebec's competitor,
00:37:32the excellent Yvonne Desjardins,
00:37:34and the excellent Yvonne Vincent-Lacasse.
00:37:37Hello.
00:37:38The excellent Swales-Mare Skating Club,
00:37:41coached by Yvonne Desjardins and Stephanie Valois.
00:37:45Short Program Choreography by Julie Marcotte.
00:37:48Skating to Nothingness Loss by The Weeknd.
00:38:21Skating to Nothingness Loss by The Weeknd.
00:38:51Skating to Nothingness Loss by The Weeknd.
00:39:21Don't ask me that, I'll be living this life so patient
00:39:28Until I see you again
00:39:32It's war we're facing
00:39:35I know that if I die, my only choice is still defending
00:39:42No matter what they say
00:39:46My love for you is greater than their powers
00:39:50And their armies from above
00:39:54You give me strength
00:40:01I will do it the way
00:40:06If I die, if I stay, give me strength
00:40:20If I die, if I stay, give me strength
00:40:27If I die, if I stay, give me strength
00:40:32If I die, if I stay, give me strength
00:40:50Well listen to the reaction from the crowd for this Team Ted,
00:40:54somewhat of a hometown national championship for this team.
00:40:58I'm really happy for them.
00:41:00Honestly, again, seeing the competitive spirit,
00:41:03I did not see them successfully
00:41:05land a side-by-side double axel this morning
00:41:07or a throw triple salchow,
00:41:09so it's nice to see that fight.
00:41:11And what is undoubtedly their training coming through
00:41:14in their short programming competition today?
00:41:17That's about as good as this team could skate
00:41:19at this moment.
00:41:20They put it all together at the moment they most needed it,
00:41:23at a national championships at home.
00:41:26Only a double twist here and only in a level one.
00:41:29We're not seeing a split, not a clean catch,
00:41:31so that will need to progress for this team
00:41:33as they develop.
00:41:34Here, the throw triple salchow.
00:41:37She hangs on a little wide for Noemi with her free leg,
00:41:40but gets it done.
00:41:42Hand-to-hand group four lift.
00:41:44Watch here, change of position, change of hold.
00:41:48Noemi's in a difficult position here
00:41:50and there's a difficult dismount.
00:41:53That's in at a level four.
00:41:56And here, the double axel.
00:41:57I was so impressed with the grit and fight on that.
00:42:01And on this back outside desk barrel for this team.
00:42:03Had some trouble with this in practice last night.
00:42:07We'll want to see these patterns expanding and growing.
00:42:11We'll want to see the work get done on the refinement
00:42:13and the unison for this team.
00:42:15But you're right, Ted, for today, for where they're at,
00:42:17they really can't perform this program a lot better
00:42:21than what they did on this team.
00:42:23Yeah, exactly.
00:42:24All those things that are going to make them better
00:42:26will come through time, not in just one performance.
00:42:28But they look pretty happy in the kiss and cry.
00:42:31So does Stephanie and Yvonne.
00:42:35This should be a huge success for them today.
00:42:38Let's take a look at the short program scores
00:42:41for Noemi and Ethan.
00:42:4350.34, not a place to put them in such a place.
00:42:48A little shrug of the truth right there
00:42:49when we go, all right, that's okay.
00:42:50Okay.
00:42:57Please welcome the next competitors.
00:43:00Our next team represents Ontario.
00:43:0216-year-old Eva Kemp and 21-year-old Jonathan Elizaroff.
00:43:06They're out of the Granite Club.
00:43:08They were first at the challenge event.
00:43:10They're coached by Kevin Dawe and Lee Barkel.
00:43:13Choreographed in the short program
00:43:15by 2008 world champion Jeffrey Buttle.
00:43:19And they'll skate to the soundtrack of Succession.

00:45:57.
00:46:02and Yonatan Elizarov.
00:46:24Well what a great return to the national championships for Eva Kemp and Yonatan Elizarov.
00:46:30Yeah that was a solid skate you know and you could see partway through that program them sort of
00:46:34getting more confidence and feeling the moment and you can see her just lift her head going
00:46:40it's done and successfully that's right it's it's nice to see them back and and back at full
00:46:46strength we saw them at challenge that was fantastic but here they are looking as strong
00:46:51as they were last season looking at their triple twist didn't see a split from Ava there but nice
00:46:57height this their side-by-side double axel I'd love to see them a little closer together but
00:47:03that's being picky this though beautiful right on top for Ava such confidence and command
00:47:11technical panel looking at this element they want to see that both Ava and Yanni are in
00:47:16their low position right now just in at a base so they'll want to work on that when they get home
00:47:23and here they're group four lift nicely done nice flow across the ice and I see there that
00:47:30the back outside desk barrel has been upgraded to a level one so that's great still room to grow there
00:47:38I love this step sequence this program by Jeff Buttle I found
00:47:41really some innovative moves in it and different choreography that I hadn't seen before I like this
00:47:48program for them again another performance that I think for the moment for this moment it's the
00:47:52best they can do at this moment I mean they'll do better they have time there's about six weeks
00:47:57before they go that's right last last year at the national championships they won by I believe
00:48:05around 10 points really took a commanding lead and will be looking to solidify themselves as the top
00:48:11junior team here this year as well I think they're on the right track they obviously have been
00:48:16managed incredibly well by their coaching team to navigate this injury and to be able to bring them
00:48:22back to full strength and full health in a way that allowed them to work efficiently
00:48:28full health in a way that allowed them to work efficiently
00:48:50congratulations to the team please welcome the final competitors
00:48:54the final team represents Quebec 18-year-old Julia Potocki and 20-year-old Simone Desmarais
00:49:03they're also coached by Stéphanie Valéry-Roy and Annie Balavé
00:49:09choreography in the short program by David Wilson
00:49:16and they'll skate to never tear us apart
00:49:23so

00:51:54two worlds collided
00:51:58and they could never
00:52:00ever
00:52:02ever
00:52:04I was so blind.
00:52:09Oh, man.
00:52:19Not the skate this team was hoping for today.
00:52:24Quite a great start with two.
00:52:26The first two elements were solid, just a double twist,
00:52:29but well done, and beautiful double axles.
00:52:31And then it was quite a struggle from there on out, Ted.
00:52:34There's a number of reviews happening.
00:52:37Four out of seven are under review.
00:52:39So we'll see what happens with the technical panel.
00:52:41Takes a deeper dive into those elements.
00:52:45I'll let you know.
00:52:47This team, we mentioned, qualified for the Junior Grand
00:52:50Prix Final and had such a great experience there,
00:52:52skating two fantastic programs, and came back so confident
00:52:56and just not what they were looking for today.
00:52:58This was nice.
00:52:59Nice double twist.
00:53:00They'll want to add a rotation, but it's
00:53:02great for where it's at.
00:53:04Look here, we almost don't see Julia,
00:53:06because their unison is so fantastic
00:53:08on this side-by-side double axle.
00:53:10This, though, I'm not sure what the technical panel's
00:53:14going to do with that.
00:53:14They'll have to decide if Simon started to lift her up,
00:53:18brought her back down, and then lifted her up again.
00:53:23If that's the case, they will get a zero.
00:53:26This nicely landed throw triple salchow very much on a lean
00:53:30and held on.
00:53:32Watch here in the back outside death spiral.
00:53:34The technical panel is wanting to see
00:53:37if they were both in a low position
00:53:39for a full revolution.
00:53:44They will receive minus on that back outside death spiral,
00:53:47regardless, because of their difficulty coming up out
00:53:49of the element.
00:53:56But they did get the level three on the group four lift.
00:53:59Which is fantastic.
00:54:01That's a lot of points to give away.
00:54:03And sometimes, it can be very difficult.
00:54:06The judges in the technical panel
00:54:07have such a difficult job to watch this in real time,
00:54:10try to decipher what happened.
00:54:12And of course, they never want to take these elements away
00:54:15from the skaters.
00:54:16But if it's within the rules that they have to do so,
00:54:20then obviously, that's what has to happen.
00:54:23But we see here, luckily for today,
00:54:26level three in this group four lift,
00:54:29and level one on the back outside death spiral
00:54:32with a minus.
00:54:32But this team will hope for a stronger skate tomorrow.
00:54:35They are capable of a stronger skate, for sure.
00:54:38And we're fighting through it.
00:54:40They never gave up on this performance,
00:54:42but definitely not what they were looking for today.
00:54:48And it was so few in the event, each team
00:54:51looking for their personal best.
00:54:52I kind of think for the short program,
00:54:55that was pretty solid.
00:54:56I wasn't expecting everyone to skate as well as they did.
00:55:00Especially having watched practice.
00:55:02I watched practice.
00:55:03I saw a lot of mistakes, a lot of tight skaters,
00:55:08and nervous energy.
00:55:09And I felt everyone, for the most part, came out today
00:55:12and were fighting through it.
00:55:13We saw competitive spirit from all athletes.
00:55:17Much preferred to have it that way than the opposite.
00:55:19That's right.
00:55:20Big practices and problems.
00:55:24The scores, please.
00:55:25Let's take a look.
00:55:26Short program scores for Julia and Sinon.
00:55:3148.90 is fourth in the short program.
00:55:37Julia and Sinon are currently in fourth place.
00:55:41And they'll see when they take a look at their sheet
00:55:45after and their list of actions and the scores they received.
00:55:48They'll understand why that happened
00:55:51and try not to replicate those errors for tomorrow.
00:55:54Pretty close to second and third place
00:55:59peer leaders for Eva and Yonatan.
00:56:04And briefly, let's talk quickly about Jasmin Deroche
00:56:07and Kieran Thresher, who have moved to seniors now.
00:56:12But yes, Jasmin and Kieran are a junior team
00:56:17internationally qualified for the Junior Grand Prix Final.
00:56:19They came third there.
00:56:20And really have established themselves this season
00:56:23as one of the top junior teams in the world.
00:56:25They've elected to compete senior
00:56:27domestically here at Nationals.
00:56:29I talked to their coach Bruno Mercado about that
00:56:32and he mentioned the strategy behind it
00:56:34was that that's their plan eventually.
00:56:37And so they want to get a head start.
00:56:39Good plan.
00:56:40Here looking at Martina and Charlie
00:56:43skated first in the event.
00:56:45Nice double twist there from them.
00:56:47Their first competition this season.
00:56:49This Martina will want to correct for tomorrow.
00:56:52I'm sure she'll be kicking herself
00:56:53just a single axle today.
00:56:55This team though shows great maturity,
00:56:58command of the ice.
00:57:00They've really taken an interest in their presentation
00:57:05and their connection within one another.
00:57:06And I'm seeing the benefits of their work on that for sure.
00:57:11Nice throw triple salchow.
00:57:14Fighting to get that free leg back.
00:57:17I love this program for them from Joey Russell.
00:57:20Bye Joey Russell.
00:57:22Better day tomorrow.
00:57:24And here Noemi and Etienne.
00:57:27His second program of the day as you mentioned Ted.
00:57:30Nice skate for this team today.
00:57:32Just a double twist.
00:57:33Some of their elements really still in the developmental stages
00:57:36but really laying great grassroots
00:57:38to have excellent triple elements in the future.
00:57:42And right now looking at this throw triple salchow.
00:57:45Well done by Noemi.
00:57:51Everything that we saw today Ted looked safe, organized.
00:57:57Nice double axle.
00:57:59You're right.
00:58:00Yeah, lots of fighting today.
00:58:02And it's important to note that things rarely come easy
00:58:04in competition and you learn a lot from figuring out
00:58:07how to fight for it in the moment.
00:58:10Here are leaders after the short program.
00:58:13Ava Kemp and Yonatan Elizarov.
00:58:16Struggling with injury earlier in the season.
00:58:19Looking fantastic here today.
00:58:21There was a beautiful triple twist by them.
00:58:24Right into their side-by-side double axles.
00:58:27Beautifully done.
00:58:29Well a solid nine point lead for this team.
00:58:32And that concludes the coverage of the Junior Pair Short Program.
00:58:36Up next will be the opening ceremonies followed by
00:58:39the Junior Synchronized Skating Free Program.
00:58:42And we'll be back with Lisa Carrieri to cover that.
00:58:45Thank you Kirsten for all the input.
00:58:47We've got many more programs coming up throughout the week.
