00:00:24Good morning, everyone.
00:00:25Welcome to day number three of the 2025 Skate Canada
00:00:28National Skating Championships.
00:00:30I'm your host, Ted Barden,
00:00:31in our studios here in Vancouver.
00:00:33It's a busy day out in Laval.
00:00:36The junior events will finish
00:00:38and the senior events will begin.
00:00:39But let's, first of all, start the day
00:00:41and go out ringside with Joni McPhail.
00:00:44Joni.
00:00:46Good morning, Ted.
00:00:48Welcome back to Laval.
00:00:50Well, it was a busy day.
00:00:51We've got lots to go through here.
00:00:52Yesterday started with the junior men's event
00:00:55and that was a redemption for most of those junior men.
00:00:59They skated great.
00:01:01They did, and I was so glad to see it.
00:01:03We talked about how it wasn't the greatest event
00:01:05with the short programs,
00:01:07but I will tell you, those guys brought it.
00:01:09And every program, they just kept getting better
00:01:11and better and stronger and stronger,
00:01:13made for a very exciting finish.
00:01:15So a fun event to watch.
00:01:18Yeah, David Bondard took the title, of course.
00:01:20He's had a wonderful year.
00:01:22I felt really bad for David Howes, who was the lead,
00:01:25but you need those experiences.
00:01:27He did not prepare for a moment being in first,
00:01:29a national title, maybe a junior world spot at that moment
00:01:33to be able to handle all the emotions
00:01:35that come along with that skating last.
00:01:37So it was a tough day,
00:01:38but that will serve him extremely well as he moves forward.
00:01:42Now, the junior dance event was exciting too, Joni.
00:01:45That was very exciting.
00:01:47And I have to say Sandrine and Quentin,
00:01:50when they opened their Robin Hood number
00:01:53with turning her into, well, into the bow and arrow,
00:01:57I was enraptured with that moment.
00:02:00It was so good.
00:02:03I love the program.
00:02:04So happy for Chloe and Brendan after last year,
00:02:08having that unfortunate incident where he stopped,
00:02:10he thought the music stopped, but it didn't.
00:02:13They kept going.
00:02:14It cost them the gold medal,
00:02:15but they were able to hang on this year for the gold.
00:02:18So redemption for them, exciting to see,
00:02:21but those junior dance teams,
00:02:23looking for them to be ready to step up to senior,
00:02:26and what our future holds is also very exciting.
00:02:29Yeah, it was a really close call for Chloe and Brendan,
00:02:33but we're so happy they were able to keep their spot,
00:02:36take the title, but the junior dance looks great,
00:02:39and many dance teams preparing to move up into senior
00:02:42following the Olympic year.
00:02:43Now, onto the junior pair event.
00:02:46Yeah, so the junior pair is a smaller field this year,
00:02:49but again, the top teams are the stronger teams,
00:02:52and they're the experienced teams.
00:02:54They've also been out with international experience,
00:02:57so, and some great things coming from them.
00:03:00I will mention that Jasmine Desrochers and Kieran Thrasher,
00:03:05who are junior and are competing junior
00:03:07internationally this year have moved up to senior
00:03:09for this event, so we'll see how they do there
00:03:11and see what happens with the juniors
00:03:13in the free program today.
00:03:16Canada's full of talent in the dance event,
00:03:18and there's no question.
00:03:20And the junior synchro, boy, that is such a difficult
00:03:22discipline, and of course, Les Epreims comes out on top.
00:03:27Les Epreims and Nexus, I mean, definitely the class
00:03:29of the field, very strong skates from both of them,
00:03:32so again, and we talked about same teams, different skaters,
00:03:36so the skaters are still making those teams strong.
00:03:39Now, the senior men's will start today, of course,
00:03:42and this is a completely wide open event.
00:03:46Last year's champion, Wesley Chu, is not there.
00:03:49This Steven Gogolev is also not there,
00:03:51so anything can happen, and we have no idea.
00:03:55Like, there's a lot of good skaters,
00:03:56but a little inconsistent throughout the season.
00:04:00There has been, and Roman did not have
00:04:03a great national event last year.
00:04:05He's been out this year skating,
00:04:07but he, you know, is, I would have to say,
00:04:10is the favorite of the field to win it,
00:04:11but he's gonna have to skate and do the jumps
00:04:13because those young guys coming up from below
00:04:16are doing the tricks, and we're gonna put pressure on him,
00:04:19but all these senior men's skaters in this event
00:04:22are gonna have to have strong skates.
00:04:24Yeah, Roman's gotta be, you know, the favorite coming in.
00:04:27He's got great speed, quad, south, triple axel,
00:04:29but he has to deliver it.
00:04:30Alexa Rackett is another.
00:04:32He was the silver medalist last year,
00:04:33so he also has a shot at this as well,
00:04:36so we'll see what happens in the short program
00:04:38coming up a little bit later today.
00:04:40The senior synchro event, man, that's amazing.
00:04:44Well, it is, and last year, it was a big upset
00:04:47for Nexus to come third and be beat by Nova,
00:04:50so I'm sure they were looking for redemption this year
00:04:53because they have been perennial strong national champions,
00:04:56or at least silver medalists
00:04:57going to the World Championships,
00:04:59and unfortunately, they did not have a strong skate
00:05:02last night and find themselves back in third
00:05:05after the short program, and there's a bit of a gap,
00:05:08so they're gonna have to really bring it
00:05:10with the free program, but Nova is strong,
00:05:13so we're gonna have to wait and see what happens.
00:05:18Well, the senior pair short program
00:05:18will take to the ice as well.
00:05:20Deanna Stiletto-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps,
00:05:23the current world champions,
00:05:24they've had some illness and injuries,
00:05:26so they haven't had their best of the year leading in,
00:05:28but this is the second half of the season.
00:05:30What can we expect?
00:05:32Well, we're expecting a lot
00:05:34because they are the world champions,
00:05:36but there's also pressure.
00:05:37When you are the world champions,
00:05:39there's expectations, not from everybody else,
00:05:42but mostly yourself, on delivering and maintaining
00:05:45that title and that status as the world champions.
00:05:48Plus, it's a much busier season
00:05:50after the world championships
00:05:52with shows and tours and things,
00:05:53and of course, injuries,
00:05:55so I think there is pressure on Jan and Max,
00:05:58so we'll see how they deliver.
00:06:00I mean, definitely they have the capabilities to do it,
00:06:03but let's see how they skate.
00:06:06And finally, now we don't have the senior women
00:06:09on today's competition schedule,
00:06:11but you just saw a little bit earlier today
00:06:13the senior women's practice,
00:06:15and you made a couple of comments to me past them on.
00:06:18If they skate like they practice,
00:06:20it's gonna be an extremely exciting event.
00:06:23We've got some strong skaters.
00:06:25We've got Kedi Sheehan and Kyra Ryder
00:06:26have made coaching changes.
00:06:28They're looking great on the ice.
00:06:29Of course, Maddie Skies is, you know,
00:06:31she's looking amazing this year,
00:06:33back to her fine form she had a few years ago,
00:06:36so, and a couple of surprises.
00:06:38Sandrine Gauthier is always strong.
00:06:40Catherine Medlin is tenth.
00:06:41Surprise senior skaters, so I hope
00:06:45they all skate like they practice
00:06:46and make it an exciting event.
00:06:48Well, we're looking forward to that tomorrow
00:06:50in the women's short program.
00:06:52So there's the wrap up of the junior events
00:06:54and the setup of the senior events
00:06:56on a long day of coverage here in Laval
00:06:59at the senior, or at the National Skating Championships.
00:07:03Thank you, Joni.
00:07:04We'll be joining you tomorrow morning.

00:10:31Hello, everyone, and welcome to day number three
00:10:34at the 2025 Canadian National Skating Championships
00:10:38along with Kirsten Moore Towers,
00:10:40the Junior Pairs free program
00:10:42coming up in just a few moments.
00:10:44And, of course, we have the Senior Pairs Short Program
00:10:46a little bit later today.
00:10:47That's going to be really exciting.
00:10:48Looking forward to that.
00:10:49But let's get on to the Junior Pairs.
00:10:51What can we expect?
00:10:52You know what?
00:10:53I think yesterday we had a great event
00:10:54from these Junior Pairs.
00:10:55We talked a lot about how it's a small event,
00:10:57but these teams really skated very well for themselves,
00:11:00led by reigning Junior Canadian Pair champions
00:11:03Ava Kemp and Yonatan Elizarov.
00:11:05They took a commanding lead yesterday.
00:11:07Ted, a nine-point lead in this event.
00:11:10They are looking today to show
00:11:12not only a beautiful, clean performance,
00:11:14but they're looking to show us the improved work
00:11:16that they've done on skating skills
00:11:18and their program components.
00:11:19We know that they have been out
00:11:21from the first half of this season with an injury.
00:11:23It's only their second event back,
00:11:25and so I'm excited for them.
00:11:27I'm looking forward to seeing all of that work
00:11:29that they've done.
00:11:30In second place, Ted, I think a surprise to them
00:11:33is Noemi Roland and Etienne Lacoste.
00:11:36Their goals, really, for this event
00:11:38are just to improve on their own personal best.
00:11:40They really still are in the developmental stages
00:11:44of their partnership,
00:11:45and so had a great, clean skate for themselves yesterday.
00:11:48We'll look to just improve on that today as well.
00:11:51And Etienne had to skate two programs yesterday.
00:11:53He has only one today, so he should be in good shape.
00:11:55He sure did.
00:11:56Yeah, just an easy day.
00:11:57One program at the national championships.
00:11:58But I want to talk about third place,
00:12:00Martina Arellano-Kent and Charlie Laliberte-Lerand.
00:12:03They're only .07 from second place,
00:12:06and we spoke yesterday about how it is
00:12:08their first event of the season.
00:12:10Charlie suffered from a shoulder labrum tear
00:12:13and had surgery last year,
00:12:15and so it has been a long recovery for them.
00:12:17Kudos to them and their coaching team
00:12:19for building them up in a way
00:12:20that they're able to show up here
00:12:22and compete at the national championships
00:12:24for, hopefully, a spot on the Junior World Team.
00:12:26Okay, and what are the most for the fans to watch for?
00:12:29What are the most difficult elements,
00:12:31what are the riskiest from a mistake perspective?
00:12:33Obviously, the throws and the side-by-side jumps, I would think.
00:12:35Absolutely, yeah.
00:12:36Especially in the Junior event,
00:12:38likely the mistakes that we'll see
00:12:40will be in the side-by-side jumping passes
00:12:42and in the throw elements.
00:12:44We will see a mix today.
00:12:45Some teams will do the triple twist,
00:12:47and some teams will do just the double twist.
00:12:49When we're competing against the best teams in the world
00:12:51in Junior pairs,
00:12:52we would like to see two throw triples
00:12:54and a triple twist.
00:12:55But, of course, we see the progressions here.
00:12:57We see the team that's in fifth place,
00:12:59Seal Back and Gavin Mahoney.
00:13:01They were novice champions last year,
00:13:03so just their first step into Junior,
00:13:05which is different than our reigning champions
00:13:07who are looking to not only be at Worlds,
00:13:09but be on the podium.
00:13:10Well, lots to look forward to, no question, of course.
00:13:13A little bit of pressure in the free program here,
00:13:15going for the title,
00:13:16also the potential for a Junior World spot.
00:13:19That'll be on the minds of some of those teams,
00:13:21there's no question.
00:13:22And the Junior Pairs free program
00:13:25for a medal, for a championship,
00:13:27starts right now.
00:13:57I'm going to say it again.
00:13:58I'm going to say it again.

00:18:36The current record for a Canadian team
00:18:38in the Junior Pair Event is 168.83,
00:18:43held by Ava Kemp and Jonathan Elissaroff of Manitoba.
00:18:47This record was set in December 2023
00:18:50at the ISU Junior Grand Prix Final.

00:20:03the technical specialists,
00:20:06Raoul Leblanc,
00:20:11and Annie Thibodeau.
00:20:44Go hard.
00:20:48Go hard.
00:20:56Well, welcome to the Junior Pair Free Program.
00:20:59I'm Ted Boudelon with Christian Moore-Towers.
00:21:02We were just talking about setting up this event,
00:21:04and it's going to be pretty exciting
00:21:06as we see some young skating fans,
00:21:08and we expect to see more, much more this weekend.
00:21:10As we approach the weekend,
00:21:12we had a good-sized audience yesterday
00:21:13in synchronized skating, Kirsten,
00:21:15and we know that when we get to the senior events,
00:21:18the audience will be coming in,
00:21:20creating a better environment,
00:21:21more energy for the athletes.
00:21:23That's right, Ted,
00:21:24and the athletes really benefit
00:21:26from the energy and the atmosphere in the building,
00:21:28so we thank the fans for showing up.
00:21:31Know that the skaters really appreciate your loud cheers
00:21:34and helps them through any performance.
00:21:37Yeah, and for those in the stands
00:21:39that will be joining us or are joining us
00:21:41or will be a little bit later today on SkateBug Radio,
00:21:44you can listen to the French commentating team
00:21:47or the English commentating team here,
00:21:49so follow it along.
00:21:51And when we talk about replaying,
00:21:53you're going to see the first group,
00:21:55two teams taking the ice.
00:22:01Just five teams in this event,
00:22:04and here's a look at our first team,
00:22:06Sylvain and Gavin Mahoney.
00:22:10From Quebec, Julia Cuatroqui and Simon Desmarais.
00:22:17Skaters, you have six minutes for your warm-up.
00:22:20Julia and Simon will be disappointed
00:22:22to find themselves in this first group today, Ted.
00:22:25They had not a bad short program,
00:22:27just a short program marred with little teeny errors
00:22:30and in a relatively well-skated event
00:22:32that saw them to finish the short program in fourth place,
00:22:36and so here they are skating in the first group.
00:22:39As we know, the start order goes in reverse order
00:22:41of results of the short program,
00:22:43so the first team you see there finished fifth yesterday,
00:22:46second place fourth yesterday.
00:22:48And you could see in the kiss and cry
00:22:50after the short program for Julia and Simon
00:22:52their disappointment in the score.
00:22:54You know, I think they had higher expectations.
00:22:56They had a pretty good year from the Junior Grand Prix this year,
00:22:59maybe a little unexpected, and so a little disappointed.
00:23:03But, hey, it's the free program now.
00:23:05It's a brand-new day.
00:23:07Two very different teams
00:23:09with very different experience levels in this group.
00:23:11As you just mentioned, Julia and Simon qualified
00:23:14for the Junior Grand Prix final that took place last month in France,
00:23:17and their coach, Stephanie Boislois,
00:23:19said it was such a rewarding and memorable experience for them,
00:23:22and they returned with a newfound motivation.
00:23:25They were proud of themselves
00:23:27and hope to take that into their program today.
00:23:29Looking here at See You Back,
00:23:32known as Bella, commonly known as Bella,
00:23:35and it's what she prefers, so I'll refer to her as Bella today.
00:23:38They are the novice champions from last year,
00:23:41Bella and her partner Gavin,
00:23:43and really just looking for experience here today.
00:23:45They're trying one throw triple jump,
00:23:47one side-by-side double axel.
00:23:50So not the most difficult content that we'll see,
00:23:53but really this entry into the junior pair discipline
00:23:56is all about experience for them.
00:23:58This really is a building year.
00:24:00Well, kind of nice to be able to come into a national event
00:24:03and say, hey, it doesn't really matter where we place.
00:24:05We hope for the best, but we just want to gain experience
00:24:08and skate with less pressure.
00:24:10Of course, personal pressure, they have certain points
00:24:12they would like to gain,
00:24:14but not necessarily going for the title type of thing.
00:24:17That's right.
00:24:19We just saw a throw double saucow from Bella and Gavin there,
00:24:22a fall on a double axel for Julia.
00:24:27And how, especially at this level, Kirsten,
00:24:29how important or discouraging is it
00:24:33when you're making mistakes in a warm-up,
00:24:35particularly in juniors?
00:24:37In seniors, you're more seasoned.
00:24:39Do you put it in perspective?
00:24:41Is it tougher for the juniors?
00:24:43I think so.
00:24:45I mean, it really depends on the athlete that we're looking at.
00:24:47We've seen some tough competitors in this group.
00:24:49Yesterday, Bella nailed that throw triple saucow,
00:24:51and I did not see her land one in practice.
00:24:53So I really saw the fighter in her
00:24:55that maybe thrived under a little bit of pressure.
00:24:57But yeah, it will be up to these skaters
00:24:59and their team of coaches to help them understand
00:25:02that the six-minute warm-up really is for just that.
00:25:04These teams are just trying to warm up,
00:25:06get their feet under them.
00:25:08Once the six minutes is over, they'll need to regroup
00:25:10and get themselves ready and in the game
00:25:12for their free program.
00:25:14When we're looking at the lifts, so important.
00:25:16We, generally speaking, watch the woman in her position at top
00:25:19because it's so spectacular.
00:25:21But the men, so important that they keep away from the toe picks
00:25:25and they keep the flow and the glide going through their turns,
00:25:27nice smooth turns across the ice.
00:25:29And that's the goal.
00:25:31And you don't see that quite at that level here at Junior sometimes
00:25:34because safety is the most important.
00:25:36That's right, and we will see the differences
00:25:38in the lifting abilities of these men in this event.
00:25:42We'll see some slower and more methodical, cautious turns,
00:25:46which is important when you're building confidence
00:25:50and abilities within doing different features in the lifts
00:25:54and earning higher points for these elements.
00:25:57And when we see the later teams in the next group,
00:26:00we'll see more speed and comfort and glide.
00:26:03They'll not only be trying to get the element done,
00:26:05they'll try to do it with quality.
00:26:07Here we see a Group 5 lift by Julianne Simot.
00:26:10You see her change position, grab her foot.
00:26:12That's a feature for the technical panel
00:26:15to upgrade the level that they're earning for that lift.
00:26:19And that's very nicely done.
00:26:21Yeah, really, I see. Good turns as well.
00:26:23So, yeah, it's interesting.
00:26:25You, as an athlete and now as a coach...
00:26:28Go ahead.
00:26:29Here, sorry, is a direct comparison.
00:26:31This is the same lift.
00:26:32Both teams are doing the same lift,
00:26:34but we see just a little bit more caution from Bella and Gavin,
00:26:37which is exactly where they're at.
00:26:39This team is not quite ready to do this
00:26:41with full speed and super fast turns.
00:26:44This is what they need to do at this time to be safe.
00:26:47I really congratulate them and their team
00:26:49for knowing that that's where they're at
00:26:51and continuing to have safety be the key for them.
00:26:54Well, that's such a good point,
00:26:56because I was about to say, as a skater
00:26:58and now as a coach of young teams,
00:27:00you know the whole development model
00:27:02and where each skater or each team is at on that model.
00:27:05And that's the point you're trying to make here.
00:27:07This is junior, and they're early on in their careers.
00:27:10No, it's just moving up.
00:27:12So you're going to see different levels of difficulty.
00:27:16Absolutely.
00:27:18And it really is up to the coaches
00:27:20to walk that fine line of pushing them appropriately
00:27:23and knowing when they're able to take that next step
00:27:26and also knowing their athletes well enough
00:27:28to know if they need to hold them back a little bit
00:27:30and stay at the place of progression that they're at.
00:27:33And that is, in my opinion, as a new coach,
00:27:36very challenging to understand that responsibility
00:27:39and know how hard to push them and when to push them.
00:27:42It's probably an emotional decision sometimes.
00:27:44Jeez, do I get them to try this?
00:27:46I know they need to try it at some time.
00:27:48Is it now the right time?
00:27:49That's right.
00:27:50And yeah, I see skate bugs here.
00:27:52Yeah, there we are.
00:27:53Thanks for listening.
00:27:54Yeah, thank you.
00:27:56Thank you for that.
00:27:58That's hilarious.
00:28:00And I think he's cheering for Quebec.
00:28:02Looks like it, yeah.
00:28:05That's great.
00:28:06As we mentioned, Ted, there are three spots
00:28:08to the Junior World Championships on the line for this event.
00:28:11We know that this event isn't the sole decider
00:28:13or contributor for the Junior World Championships.
00:28:15Skate Canada's selection process is very clear on the website.
00:28:19It doesn't depend on one competition only.
00:28:21But these teams will want to do well today for a bit for that.
00:28:25We just saw Gavin sprain some things on his hand.
00:28:28It's called firm grip.
00:28:29It's a bit sticky, a little glue-ish like,
00:28:32but not too bad, to have a firmer grip and hold
00:28:35so it's for safety.
00:28:36That's right.
00:28:37So his partner doesn't slip out of his hands.
00:28:40Not everyone uses it, but some prefer it.
00:28:43Here we go.
00:28:44Our first team.
00:28:46Not too old.
00:28:47It's Bella Bach and Gavin Mahoney.
00:28:49She's 14.
00:28:50He is 18 out of the Mariposa School of Skating.
00:28:54And they're coached by Janice Morgan and Ryan Arnold.
00:28:59Choreographed in the free program by Kelly Johnson.
00:29:03As they get ready to take their spot.
00:29:07For more experience to be gained here
00:29:09in their first Junior National Championships.
00:29:11They'll skate to The Impossible Dream.
00:29:14♪
00:29:30To dream
00:29:33The impossible dream
00:29:39To fight
00:29:42The unbeatable foe
00:29:47To bear
00:29:50With unbearable sorrow
00:29:55And to run
00:29:58Where the brave dare not go
00:30:03This is my quest
00:30:08To follow a star
00:30:12No matter how hopeless
00:30:16No matter how far
00:30:20To fight for the right
00:30:24Without question or pause
00:30:29To be willing to march
00:30:31March into hell
00:30:33Without having a cause
00:30:38And I know
00:30:41If I'll only be true
00:30:45To this glorious quest
00:30:51That my heart
00:30:54Will lie peacefully calm
00:30:58When I lay to my rest
00:31:06And the world
00:31:09Will be better for this
00:31:14Than one man
00:31:17Scorned and covered with scars
00:31:22Still strong
00:31:25With his last ounce of courage
00:31:31To reach
00:31:34The unreachable
00:31:36The unreachable
00:31:38The unreachable star
00:32:04I'll always dream
00:32:08The impossible dream
00:32:12Yes, and I'll reach
00:32:16The unreachable
00:32:22Star
00:32:38The Unreachable Star
00:33:03Representing Ontario
00:33:05Seal Bach and Gavin Mahoney
00:33:08A nice start to the event by Seal or Bella Bach and Gavin Mahoney
00:33:12See a little bit of disappointment from them there
00:33:15They've somewhat downgraded the content in their program
00:33:19And I think we're hoping for a cleaner performance today
00:33:21But like we mentioned
00:33:23These are the novice champions from last season
00:33:25And really just looking for experience
00:33:27In the junior event for the first time
00:33:29Yeah, and yesterday they did the Throw Triple Salchow
00:33:31Which was maybe a bit of a surprise for them
00:33:33But hoping to do it again
00:33:35Good attempt
00:33:37Yeah, it was a great attempt
00:33:39And certainly not a surprise to me
00:33:41Having seen them on practice
00:33:43They have struggled with it a little bit
00:33:45Nice opening choreo
00:33:47Let's take a look at the twist
00:33:49Nice split from Bella
00:33:51Not a lot of height
00:33:53Not a clean catch
00:33:55That will come eventually
00:33:57Take a look at this jump combination
00:33:59We're doing double flip, double toe loop, double toe loop
00:34:01They go home and continue to work
00:34:03Here the group 5 lift
00:34:05Talked about this a little bit in the warm up
00:34:07Change of position
00:34:09Bella grabs her blade
00:34:11Gavin is on one arm
00:34:13Just a little bit slower, smaller pattern
00:34:15Little bit on the topics
00:34:17Here there's that Throw Triple Salchow
00:34:19We were talking about
00:34:21Little wild in the air
00:34:23Not a tight air position
00:34:25Not able to check out
00:34:27Side by side double axel
00:34:29We'll definitely review that
00:34:31For an under rotation
00:34:35This was a nice element
00:34:37The forward inside desk spiral
00:34:39Junior teams have to do a different desk spiral
00:34:41Oh no, I'm sorry, they don't
00:34:43That senior, excuse me, getting ahead of myself
00:34:47Double three on that
00:34:49It's a great element for this team
00:34:51They don't have to do a different desk spiral
00:34:53In the free, many will elect to
00:34:55Because the back outside desk spiral
00:34:57In the short is so challenging
00:34:59We'll talk about that a little bit more in the next group
00:35:03This team also struggled with an injury
00:35:05Earlier in the season
00:35:07Coaches Janice Morgan and Ryan Arnold
00:35:09Have been so methodical
00:35:11And careful to not push them too much
00:35:13Too soon to allow them growth
00:35:15They're so young still
00:35:1771.51
00:35:21Sio and Gavin
00:35:23In total 112.79
00:35:27The free program
00:35:2971.51
00:35:31And a total score of 112.79
00:35:35Really just experience
00:35:37For this team this year
00:35:41Please welcome the next skaters
00:35:43Our next team represents Quebec
00:35:4518-year-old Julian Quattrochi
00:35:47And 20-year-old Simon Desmarais
00:35:53And they're coached by Stephanie Valois
00:35:55And Amy Barabay
00:36:01And choreographed
00:36:03I believe in the free program by David Wilson
00:36:05Skating to Sign of the Times
00:36:25Stop you crying
00:36:27It's a sign of the times
00:36:31Welcome to the final show
00:36:35I hope you're wearing your best clothes
00:36:41We never thought it would be me before

00:40:53We've got to get away.
00:40:54We've got to get away.
00:40:55We've got to get away.
00:40:56Even in their skating skills and the technique of how they skate and how they jump, they're
00:41:01a very well-matched team.
00:41:03Here just a double twist, very nicely done, and great groundwork for a triple.
00:41:07Eventually, slight mistake here from Julia, slightly outside the circle, has to do a little
00:41:12three turn.
00:41:13That will result in a slight negative of the grade of execution the judges award them.
00:41:18Here the group five reverse lift.
00:41:23This lift worth the most points, and they're doing it at the highest level.
00:41:27That's a level four.
00:41:30Throw triple salchow slightly forward in the air, almost touches down.
00:41:34I can't tell if she puts her hand down or not.
00:41:40And here the forward inside death spiral.
00:41:42This is in at a level three, and it's very nicely done.
00:41:50Here their group three lift.
00:41:51That means hand to hip.
00:41:52Here she changes position, change of hold.
00:41:58Difficult position, and here is their difficult dismount.
00:42:00This is also in at a level four, the highest level they can achieve, as we know.
00:42:07And their pair combination spin to close the program.
00:42:11I think they can be really proud of themselves today.
00:42:14Yeah, clearly you can see the reaction at the end of the program.
00:42:17They gave each other a hug and a bit of redemption, and leaving this competition feeling pretty
00:42:23good.
00:42:24I'm waiting for the scores to see how much they earned.
00:42:27That's right.
00:42:28I'm sure they feel relief after yesterday being very disappointed and finding themselves
00:42:32in this first group.
00:42:34Ladies and gentlemen, the scores, please.
00:42:36The score for Representative of Montaigne, 92.77, with a total of 141.67.
00:42:45Julia and Simon are actually in first place.
00:42:49The program score 92.77, with a total score of 141.67.
00:42:57Julia and Simon are actually in first place.
00:43:05Oh, what a great job that club and those coaches have been doing in building the pair program
00:43:12because they were just a single skating club for the most part, and now have really expanded
00:43:16into pair development as well.
00:43:19And they're busy.
00:43:20They'll have another junior pair in this group, and they have one pair in the senior event
00:43:24later in the season.
00:43:35The final three teams.
00:43:37We spoke a little bit about the Junior World Championships.
00:44:07And the qualification for that competition.
00:44:10And Canada can send three teams to the Junior World Championship event.
00:44:14But it's important to note that the junior team who led the charge for Canada throughout
00:44:19the Junior Grand Prix season will actually be competing senior at the National Championships
00:44:23only.
00:44:24But they will be eligible to qualify for the Junior World Championships.
00:44:29And that is, of course, Jasmine Darochet and Kieran Thrasher.
00:44:33We expect that they will take one of those three spots, but of course nothing is confirmed yet.
00:44:39Here, taking a look at Noemi and Etienne.
00:44:42That is an exercise for a twist that they will do.
00:44:45Obviously, all teams warming up their elements a little bit differently.
00:44:49We'll see different progressions from all of them.
00:44:51But I always find it interesting to see what teams elect to do to find their timing and
00:44:55their rhythm within one another.
00:45:00And here, setting it up.
00:45:01Here are some difficult steps and a lift into the twist.
00:45:05That is a feature.
00:45:06If you can do difficult steps with timing into your twist, you will earn an additional
00:45:11feature, which earns you more points for that element.
00:45:15Because it is more difficult.
00:45:17Here, the element that Martina and Charlie missed yesterday.
00:45:22Not today.
00:45:24In the warm-up, very well done.
00:45:26Side by side, double axel, double axel.
00:45:28That same result in the long program.
00:45:36Such a challenge.
00:45:37Whatever happens in that warm-up doesn't matter.
00:45:40If they have a bad warm-up or a good warm-up.
00:45:43That's right.
00:45:44The goal really is to, regardless of what happens, to regroup.
00:45:48And if your warm-up is great, to use it as comfort and confidence that your program can
00:45:53be great as well.
00:45:54And if the warm-up is not so good, the athletes and their teams will have to find a way to
00:45:59turn it around.
00:46:00To put their brains and bodies into the correct mindset, really.
00:46:04And place to compete like they've been training.
00:46:09Taking a look here at Ava Kemp and Yonatan Elizarov.
00:46:12These are reigning Canadian junior champions and the leaders from yesterday.
00:46:16We spoke about how they took really a commanding lead, Ted.
00:46:18Almost ten points.
00:46:20A nine-point lead for them.
00:46:21That's a huge lead in a short program.
00:46:23But, only their second competition of the season, they will be looking to skate very
00:46:28well today to secure this title.
00:46:30Let's talk a little bit about injuries in any of your athletes, particularly here in
00:46:34Paris.
00:46:35Sometimes it allows you time to learn elements and to work on details that you didn't have
00:46:39during a busy competitive season.
00:46:41Perhaps that is to their advantage.
00:46:43You're right.
00:46:44And that is the case with this team.
00:46:45I spoke to their coach, Kevin Dahn.
00:46:47He said that the time that they had off of big elements really allowed them to work on
00:46:52the skating skill, the second mark, their connection within one another and with the
00:46:57audience and with the music.
00:46:58And they hope to be able to show us that today.
00:47:00Yeah, I clearly see that relationship and partnership on the ice is maturing.
00:47:05Absolutely.
00:47:07Taking a look here at Martina and Charlie.
00:47:09Charlie suffered with a torn labrum last year and had surgery in France and was recovering
00:47:15for a number of months where he was unable to move his arm, which really is a challenge
00:47:20when you're a pair skater, I would imagine.
00:47:22And so Martina trained on her own.
00:47:25She even did a singles competition.
00:47:27And after one singles competition, realized very quickly that, uh-uh, no, I'm a pair girl.
00:47:32I don't want to do a singles competition.
00:47:34But, of course, was important for her as well to keep training.
00:47:37For sure.
00:47:38Interesting.
00:47:39Also, we always mention quite often for the athlete's story a little bit about the injuries
00:47:42and illnesses they're going through.
00:47:43But we all have that in life.
00:47:44So it always sounds like that, oh, gee, this is something I could help.
00:47:47Yeah.
00:47:48Athletes get injured because they're pushing the limits.
00:47:50That's just part of the journey.
00:47:53That's right.
00:47:54And I think it helps us to paint a picture a little bit more of their story.
00:47:57When things are all happening so easily, which really rarely happens, the reward and the
00:48:03final result isn't quite as sweet.
00:48:05And I think knowing the history of these athletes and the difficult journey that they've had,
00:48:09this team in particular, to get to the national championships is important to see who they
00:48:15are and to speak to their values as individuals and as a team together.
00:48:19And one of the most important skills that you can have for any athlete is the ability
00:48:24to cope with whatever the situation is at the moment.
00:48:27And that is easier said than done.
00:48:29Adaptability is so key.
00:48:31And it's so difficult.
00:48:38See Martina and Charlie taking a moment to be having a discussion about something or
00:48:48other.
00:48:49The six minute warm up is really a game of strategy to figure out how much to do and
00:48:53how much to pull back.
00:48:55Preserve your energy, especially when you're skiing first.
00:48:58I know it's different for everyone, but how important was communication with your partner
00:49:02with Michael?
00:49:03You know, just moments before you go out or did you have any communication?
00:49:06Yeah, I tend to be a communicator, you could say.
00:49:11But I do believe it's important for pair teams and dance teams to be on the same page as
00:49:16one another and to know that you're there together, ready to take on this great challenge
00:49:21and kind of for better or for worse, you have each other's backs in that.
00:49:26And communication helps, I think, to put you in the same headspace and same mindset to
00:49:33get the job done.
00:49:36There you have it.
00:49:37Words from the expert.
00:49:38You have lived it for most of your life.
00:49:40When did you first start?
00:49:41At what age did you first start pair skating?
00:49:43I was 15.
00:49:44My first nationals in senior was 2009.
00:49:48Really?
00:49:49Yes.
00:49:50Well, it seems like just a little while ago.
00:49:52Well, we are 2025.
00:49:55Oh yeah.
00:49:57For this final pair, please leave the ice.
00:50:08Well, there they are, their first team in the last flight.
00:50:23Please welcome the next skaters.
00:50:29From Quebec, Maxime-Arnaud Mondry and Charly-Lavie-Lafayette-Lenard.
00:50:52I'm waking up to ash and dust.
00:51:05I wipe my brow and I sweat my rise.
00:51:09I really know I'm not alone.
00:51:15I'm breaking in.
00:51:18I'm shaping up.
00:51:20I'm checking out on the prison bus.
00:51:24This is it.
00:51:26We are calling.
00:51:29I'm waking up.
00:51:32I feel it in my bones.
00:51:35Enough to make my system blow.
00:51:39Welcome to the new age.
00:51:41To the new age.
00:51:43Welcome to the new age.
00:51:45To the new age.

00:52:47I'm breaking in.
00:53:01I'm shaping up.
00:53:03I'm checking out on the prison bus.
00:53:06This is it.
00:53:08The apocalypse.
00:53:11I'm waking up.
00:53:13I feel it in my bones.
00:53:16Enough to make my system blow.
00:53:20Welcome to the new age.
00:53:22To the new age.
00:53:24Welcome to the new age.
00:53:26To the new age.
00:53:30I'm radioactive. Radioactive.
00:53:37I'm radioactive. Radioactive.
00:53:41All systems go.
00:53:44The sun hasn't died.
00:53:48Deep in my bones.
00:53:51Straight from inside.
00:53:54I'm waking up.
00:53:56I feel it in my bones.
00:53:58Enough to make my system blow.
00:54:02Welcome to the new age.
00:54:04To the new age.
00:54:06Welcome to the new age.
00:54:08To the new age.
00:54:11I'm radioactive. Radioactive.
00:54:19I'm radioactive. Radioactive.
00:54:32What a great response and a great free program by Martina Arellano-Kent and Charlie Lowe.
00:54:38Martina Arellano-Kent and Charlie Lowe.
00:55:09What a great comeback really in many ways after that injury.
00:55:12Coming back with a nice, clean, tidy program.
00:55:14Knowing that they can increase the difficulty if they should get the chance to go to the Junior World Championship.
00:55:19That was awesome.
00:55:21That was awesome.
00:55:23This team supports each other.
00:55:25Works hard and will have really been hoping for this today.
00:55:29As all teams are of course.
00:55:32Beautiful opening choreography.
00:55:35This here just a double twist.
00:55:38They can do a triple.
00:55:40This double twist in at a level two.
00:55:43And here the element that Martina did a single yesterday.
00:55:47Double axel, step, double axel.
00:55:49Really nicely done today.
00:55:52And their first lift, group three lift.
00:55:54Charlie is rotating the other direction.
00:55:56That's a feature for the technical panel to award.
00:55:59There's a change of position, change of hold.
00:56:03Difficult position for Martina and their difficult exit.
00:56:06In at a level four.
00:56:08Here, watch this.
00:56:09Throw triple saukau.
00:56:10She comes out right on top.
00:56:12So confident.
00:56:13Beautiful landing position.
00:56:16Here a back outside death spiral.
00:56:18This the death spiral that's prescribed in the short.
00:56:21This team is electing to do it in the free as well.
00:56:23Because it can earn them up to a whole point more than if they did the forward inside.
00:56:29Taking a look here at their second lift.
00:56:32Maybe a little bit slower in the turns for Charlie.
00:56:36As they continue to work and do more long programs to get more runs in.
00:56:41They'll want to increase their speed through that element.
00:56:45The scores please.
00:56:48The score for the free program.
00:56:5093.67.
00:56:53With a total score of 145.94.
00:56:57Martina and Charlie are currently in first place.
00:57:15Here is the team that is currently in second place.
00:57:19But just barely ahead of the team that just skated.
00:57:22Naomi Roland and Etienne Lacasse from Quebec.
00:57:2517 and 19 years of age.
00:57:27They're led by Yvonne Desjardins and Stephanie Berlois.
00:57:34And they're choreographed by Milan Namaru in the free program.

01:01:39practice i'm so impressed with how they responded to the pressure of competition and the pressure
01:01:46of hearing the score and perhaps the response to the team that skated before them all right if
01:01:52there's something you want to see you want to see people raise their game at that most important
01:01:57moment because quite often you see skaters you think are gonna do extremely well and drop but
01:02:03absolutely not today these teams have really put it out no they really have rose to the occasion and
01:02:09what a nice performance for this team to put out in front of their family and friends another team
01:02:14that's skating very close to home and i really just have to congratulate them on the training
01:02:19that they have done to allow them to put the practice behind them and and to really do a
01:02:25program that they are capable of and can be proud of tian's a really good pair skater like he's
01:02:31solid and we saw him in the junior men's and this discipline suits him so well absolutely
01:02:38nice opening choreography there here wow look at this throw triple sauko really right on top
01:02:45today for noemi she didn't have a shadow of a doubt that she would miss that element and here
01:02:50the side by side triple sauko i did not see this landed in practice this morning
01:02:54looking here at the group five reverse lift i would love moving forward to see a little bit
01:03:02more stretch and refinement at the top of these lifts but obviously that will come with more time
01:03:08and mileage and their second lift here the group three here etienne on one arm for three rotations
01:03:18that will actually be two features if the technical panel awards it which it looks like they did
01:03:25and the back outside desk spiral another team electing to do the same desk spirals yesterday
01:03:29because if you can do it with great quality ted it is worth more than the forward inside
01:03:34desk spiral or the back inside little slip there nothing major
01:03:41might result in a decrease of the quality points and it looks like they received a violation on
01:03:48their pair spin which means they didn't hit all three positions so that will be a very minor hit
01:03:53to their score as well but really such a great performance for this team today i think um we can
01:03:59be really excited about their future when they're able to add in that second throw triple and the
01:04:04triple twist perhaps another side-by-side triple we know etienne is capable we saw him do it in
01:04:11in his junior men's competition yesterday scores please we see lots of smiles on the kids cry
01:04:16they're pleased with what they have accomplished let's take a look at the scores for that program
01:04:2089.63 now that is third in the free program with a total competition score of 139.97
01:04:31and you know if they did what they can today they have to be proud of that that has to be
01:04:35a personal victory for them today and then perhaps next year they can focus on topping the podium
01:04:41um
01:04:46our final team 16 year old eva camp 21 year old yonatan eliza
01:04:52representing ontario they're coached by kevin daw and lee barkell
01:04:59choreographed in the free program by carol lane and yuris rizguliev
01:05:05you mentioned kevin daw their coach has been with him from the beginning
01:05:08here they are skating
01:05:38You're a good boy, I need no sympathy
01:05:43Because I'm easy come, easy go
01:05:47Little high, little low
01:05:50Any way the wind blows
01:05:53Doesn't really matter to me
01:05:59To me
01:06:02Mama, just killed a man
01:06:12Put a gun against his head
01:06:16Pulled my trigger, now he's dead
01:06:19Mama, life had just begun
01:06:26But now I've gone and thrown it all away
01:06:33Mama, I don't wanna die
01:06:43Sometimes wish I'd never been born at all
01:06:56I see a little silhouette of a man
01:07:20Scaramouche, Scaramouche, will you do the fandango?
01:07:24Thunderbolt and lightning, very, very frightening me
01:07:28Galileo, Galileo, Galileo and Galileo
01:07:32Let me go!
01:07:34I'm just a poor boy, nobody loves me
01:07:37He's just a poor boy from a poor family
01:07:40Spare him his life from this monstrosity
01:07:45Easy come, easy go, will you let me go?
01:07:48Mama mia, mama mia, mama mia, let me go
01:07:51Beelzebub has a devil for a side for me, for me, for me
01:08:01Yoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo
01:08:06Yoo-hoo, yoo-hoo, you-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo
01:08:17Nothing really matters, anyone can see
01:08:24Nothing really matters to me
01:08:54Well you know what Ted, not the skate that Ava Kemp and Yonatan Elazarov were hoping for, but still a great free program considering only their second event back and their first event back to full content, full triple elements.
01:09:13We saw a few mistakes, but definitely have seen the progression and the improvement from this team since challenge. We can see how hard they are on themselves. They have obviously a very high bar that they have set for themselves as a team.
01:09:26We can see the mistakes obviously, but one of the qualities he has great coverage of the ice on the lifts. That's beautiful. That's nicely done.
01:09:34They had challenges with the side by side jumps. We'll see that. And they've got all the skills. They weren't all here today.
01:09:41That's right. Here taking a look at their triple twist. Nice height, little bit of a messy catch here today.
01:09:50Watch Yanni not doing three rotations, only doing a double saucow. Very unusual for him. Usually a very reliable jumper, but unfortunately just the double today.
01:10:01Beautiful side by side double axles though. Really nicely done with great quality.
01:10:06Throw triple loop here. Ava just has to pitch forward on the landing, touches her right hand down. That will be a slight decrease in the quality points from the judges.
01:10:17Here their group three lift. Nice ice coverage. Nice speed. In at a level four.
01:10:25Throw triple saucow, gets outside the circle, has to take a step out. That will be a pretty big deduction in the grade of execution, but not a fall.
01:10:35Will not receive a minus one for a fall in that element here. The back outside death spiral to close out their program.
01:10:42And their coach Kevin Doss spoke a lot about how they worked on their connection with one another in the music.
01:10:47I saw it a little bit. I believe that if they skated cleanly, we would have seen it more.
01:10:52And that's a skill that really comes with experience, right? Knowing that you haven't done the elements to the best of your ability, but still you're able to perform and connect.
01:11:03And that's a big ask for a junior team, but something that will be required of them for them to achieve the goals they have for themselves at say a junior world championship.
01:11:13Once you start landing the technical elements, then the joy comes out in the performance and you open the door and allow that to come out.
01:11:19But as long as there's a little disappointment, it's tough to not carry that through and keep the door of performance closed a little bit tighter.
01:11:27That's right. Not intentional. It's just human.
01:11:29Of course. And I don't want to take away from the fact that this really is a fabulous team who had challenges early in the season.
01:11:37And them along with their team really built well and seemingly correctly so that they could get back to full strength doing all their elements at the national championships to allow them the chance to compete healthy.
01:11:50Let's take a look at the free program scores.
01:12:01There it is. 99.90. That's first in the free program with 159.39.
01:12:06As they take the title, they would have been happier taking the title with a better skate, no question about it.
01:12:13And you can see the qualities there kept them on top.
01:12:16And you're right, Ted, they would have rather won with a great skate.
01:12:20And I like to see that in an athlete, an athlete who expects the best of themselves regardless of the final result.
01:12:26And to me, that's a quality that will see them through a very successful career.
01:12:30Yeah, they've got high expectations for themselves.
01:12:33But this is the beginning of their season or just early on in the beginning of their season because they've been off for so long.
01:12:40But, you know, they've got about six weeks for the World Junior Championships.
01:12:43So they've got time to continue to improve. That's for sure.
01:12:46That's right.
01:12:48Take a look at the standings.
01:12:49They've got Melint and Martina and Charlie and Julia and Sloan.
01:12:56Just about two points off for Naomi and Etienne.
01:12:58They look a little disappointed with those scores.
01:13:01But they had a great short program and really a good competition.
01:13:04Yeah, they did.
01:13:05They had two great programs.
01:13:07And I think that coming in with the expectations of achieving a personal best maybe shifted a little when they found themselves in second after the short.
01:13:15But I think they have to remember that perspective of what their expectations were and what their potential is as a team.
01:13:22So difficult for the skaters and the coaches to keep things in perspective as things unfold day by day because you get some hope and you get some joy.
01:13:30And this is exciting.
01:13:31Then some expectations.
01:13:32Oh, my gosh, I'm in this position.
01:13:34What do I do?
01:13:35I didn't think I would be.
01:13:36But now I am.
01:13:37You know, there's so many emotions and thoughts that go through your head and your heart in a competition.
01:13:42Absolutely.
01:13:43Taking a look now at Julia Quattrocchi and Simon Desmarais.
01:13:49Third place for this team today and a better free program than we saw.
01:13:54Short program from them yesterday.
01:13:55I think they can be proud of this competition and their first junior Canadian medal.
01:14:00They were fourth at this event last season.
01:14:04I thought they skated with such unison.
01:14:06I loved the choreography in their program.
01:14:08Only a throw double there.
01:14:09They will eventually have that be a triple.
01:14:11I have no doubt.
01:14:12They have great basics and they're with a great coaching team to get that job done.
01:14:19Nice skate for them today.
01:14:20Here, Martina Arellano-Kent, Charly La Liberté-Laurent in their first event of the season.
01:14:26Not up to full technical strength yet.
01:14:29But what they did do today, they did with such ease and class and effortlessness.
01:14:35And it really makes me excited for them to see, should they get selected for the Junior World Championships,
01:14:40what they will be able to put out on a world stage in, I was going to say a couple of months.
01:14:45I believe it starts next month, though, Ted, in Hungary.
01:14:48Beautiful throw triple Saukau.
01:14:51This team has had a long wait to return to competition and they certainly reveled in this moment today.
01:14:57Really nice reaction from them.
01:14:59Love to see that.
01:15:03And your two-time Junior Canadian National Champions, Eva Kemp and Yonatan Elizarov.
01:15:10Not the free skate they were hoping for today, Ted, but this team is so incredible
01:15:15and really has potential to not only be a great junior team, but a great senior team, too.
01:15:22It's so admirable.
01:15:23When you win the title, but you're not pleased with yourself or with the performance.
01:15:28So they're only going to get better.
01:15:30And as you mentioned, you're right.
01:15:31It's the end of February that the Junior World Championships will take place in the Czech Republic.
01:15:36And you're right, Ted, we didn't...
01:15:38Or Hungary, pardon me, Hungary.
01:15:39Oh, that's right.
01:15:40We didn't see the huge happy response from this team, but it's just a mark of what's to come.
01:15:47Yeah, absolutely.
01:15:48Well, that concludes the coverage of the junior pairs.
01:15:50A little bit later today, the senior pairs, you'll be looking forward to that.
01:15:53That's going to be exciting to get to see the teams and where they're at after some injuries
01:15:57and some illnesses throughout the season.
01:16:00So lots to look forward to in the Senior Pairs Short Program at the end of today.
01:16:05Up next, the Junior Women's Free Program.
01:16:07But boy, there's some talent and some skaters wanting some redemption
01:16:11after some poor short program skates.
01:16:13Caitlin Osmond will be joining me for that.
01:16:15That concludes our coverage here of the Junior Pairs event.
01:16:19I'm Ted Barton along with Kirsten Moore-Towers.
01:16:22We hope you stay with us for the Junior Women.
