00:00We all know how important it is for us to take care of our health.
00:07That's why, even though we are in the middle of medicine, we are still searching, studying,
00:11and discovering ways to give solutions to different feelings.
00:16And one of the latest technologies in medicine is what we call robotic surgery.
00:24We will be joined by Dr. Camille Anabaya, an obstetrician and gynecologist.
00:32Good morning, Dr. Camille.
00:33Good morning.
00:37First of all, what is robotic surgery and how does it help doctors?
00:44Robotic surgery is a type of surgery where the diseased parts of our body are removed with small incisions.
00:54So basically, we don't have to cut a large number of patients.
00:58So, simply speaking, it offers us less pain and faster recovery.
01:04That's what robotic surgery is.
01:06So it's just a small incision?
01:08Yes.
01:09Or when there's a scar, it's just a small incision?
01:11But mind you, it's not done by a robot.
01:14It's done by a doctor with the help of the robotic platform.
01:20So what are the advantages of going undergoing robotic surgery compared to traditional surgery?
01:27Okay, so we mentioned that it's faster healing.
01:30Because it's just a small incision, it heals faster.
01:34Number two, faster recovery.
01:37Before, we were in the hospital for three to five days.
01:41Now, we can go home overnight if the patient wants to.
01:46And also, aesthetically, it's better because the incision is smaller.
01:50I'm an OB-GYN, so I'm dealing with women.
01:54So we know that we want our women to have beautiful chins.
01:58So you can still wear a swimsuit?
01:59Correct.
02:01Is this technology perfect?
02:04Because, of course, doctors need training.
02:07Yes.
02:08If you're talking about the machine,
02:10it's been FDA-approved in America since 2005.
02:15So it's been around for a long time.
02:17The robot has been with us even in the late 90s.
02:21As to training,
02:24if you've heard of laparoscopy or minimally invasive surgery,
02:29if a doctor has the training,
02:31it's faster for the patient to move into the robotic platform.
02:34But how accurate is this machine?
02:37It's very accurate.
02:39It has an HD camera.
02:41We can zoom in.
02:42That's the misnomer.
02:43People think it's better to open it because we can see everything better.
02:47But that's not true.
02:49If we have an HD camera that goes into the body,
02:51we can zoom in better.
02:53If the patient is open, this is all we can see.
02:56Right?
02:57But if we zoom in with the camera,
02:59we can see better.
03:00So that's the advantage.
03:02That's how...
03:04And then the movements are very precise.
03:07It removes the tremor.
03:09Surgeons have natural tremors, right?
03:12It removes the tremors.
03:14So it's more precise.
03:16You're really an expert.
03:19Doc, what are the conditions or women's diseases
03:23that robotic surgery needs?
03:26Yes.
03:27Basically, all gynecologic conditions,
03:29except for the cancers in the late stage,
03:33we can do it with robotics.
03:35These are the myomas.
03:37These are the ovaries.
03:40There are early cancers that we can remove.
03:43People are surprised.
03:45We can do a hysterectomy or remove a matress
03:47using just those little incisions.
03:50Sometimes, patients are surprised.
03:54Doc, how is robotic surgery done?
03:57What are the risks?
03:59Is there a disadvantage?
04:02I cannot think of a disadvantage.
04:04Maybe the worst case is if the robot shuts down.
04:09But we do have emergency situations for that.
04:12So far, I've been doing robotic surgery in the Philippines
04:15for 14 years.
04:16Nothing like this has happened.
04:19The risks are the same as the risks of open surgery.
04:25Surgery is always a risk.
04:27But to put robotic with an increased risk,
04:30it's like nothing.
04:31It's more of an advantage.
04:34So 14 years of experience and training.
04:37And Doc, for sure,
04:38our other RSPs who have these kinds of conditions,
04:42women's diseases,
04:44would like robotic surgery.
04:46Of course, there are many advantages.
04:48But what is the range of this price, Doc?
04:51It's almost the same as laparoscopy or minimally invasive.
04:57Maybe, I'll leave that for them to ask.
05:01I practice out of St. Luke's.
05:03They can inquire there.
05:06We have an information center there.
05:08They can inquire.
05:09Or if you go to the clinics of the robotic surgeons,
05:12you will be given a price range depending on your disease.
05:16On the severity and all that.
05:19Well, here in the Philippines,
05:20because this technology is a bit new,
05:23are there many hospitals in our country that have this?
05:27It's increasing.
05:29But I'd like to say that St. Luke's was the first to have robotic surgery.
05:37They're offering robotic surgery.
05:39Now, we have both in BGC and QC.
05:42So we have two robots already.
05:44Before, for the longest time, we only had one.
05:47And then, other bigger hospitals in Metro Manila,
05:50and I believe in Mindanao,
05:52we already have one.
05:55All right.
05:56Doc, last question.
05:57I'll take this opportunity.
05:59What is your message to women as OB-GYNs?
06:04Yes.
06:05To take care of themselves.
06:06Okay.
06:07So, if you have a women's disease like myoma,
06:10ovarian cyst, or early cancers,
06:13don't be afraid to go to a doctor.
06:16Because now, with what we have discussed,
06:19there are new technologies that allow quick recovery.
06:24It's not painful.
06:25The downtime, maybe just two weeks,
06:28you're up and about and you're ready to go already.
06:30Overnight, I can send you home.
06:32So, don't be afraid, and you explore your options.
06:35When they say for operation,
06:37you can ask if there are other types,
06:41such as robotic surgery,
06:42so that your disease can be cured.
06:44There are so many options.
06:45Yes.
06:46Doc, thank you very much for all the information
06:48that you shared with us this morning.
06:50Thank you also for the free telemedicine.
