00:00This is it, brothers and sisters.
00:01Now, Eyes, Ears, Nose, and Throat Consciousness Week.
00:05We pay attention to the health of our eyes, ears, nose, and throat.
00:10One of the things that is often overlooked, but important, is taking care of our skin.
00:16Correct.
00:17We will interview Dr. Franco Louis Aves,
00:21an otorhinolaryngologist, to talk about how to keep our ears healthy and avoid the usual problems with hearing.
00:36Good morning, Dr. Franco.
00:38Good morning, Doc.
00:39Hello, good morning.
00:41Good morning, Mr. President, and good morning to our viewers.
00:51Dr. Franco, let's start with hearing loss.
00:56What is the usual sign of hearing loss?
01:01Okay, what we usually see, especially in the elderly, is our age-related hearing loss, or presbycosis.
01:12This is the loss of hearing while we are getting older.
01:15This is a natural occurrence.
01:17Anybody above 40 years old will eventually lose their hearing and lose their hearing,
01:22just like the loss of our eyes.
01:25Sometimes, the reason for the loss of hearing is because of the long exposure to noise.
01:32Sometimes, there are acquired causes, such as hearing loss.
01:41Our children are predisposed to having fluid in their ears because their faces are smaller.
01:49Sometimes, there are children who are born with hearing loss.
01:56This is what we usually see.
01:58Doc, there are different types of hearing loss.
02:02What is the difference between conductive hearing loss and sensor-neutral hearing loss?
02:12How can we avoid this?
02:17Okay, so when we say conductive hearing loss,
02:21this is the loss of conduction of sound in our ears.
02:25Our ears are made out of the outer ear, the middle ear, and the inner ear.
02:30Conductive hearing loss involves the outer ear and the middle ear.
02:36The middle ear is the part of the ear that is connected to the eardrum and the middle ear.
02:43The inner ear is what we call cochlea, or the microphone.
02:47When external ear and middle ear are involved,
02:50such as the eardrums and gums,
02:53this is what we call conductive hearing loss.
02:55If we have hearing loss, it is because of that.
02:58Now, sensory-neutral hearing loss is when our inner ear mechanism,
03:04or cochlea, the microphone,
03:07converts mechanical signals, electrical energy, and interprets our brains.
03:14This is sensory-neutral hearing loss.
03:17This is similar to what I mentioned earlier,
03:20presbycosis, or age-related hearing loss,
03:23or noise-inducing hearing loss.
03:27Well, Dr. Franco, how can we know if we have a hearing problem?
03:34What are the signs of this?
03:37This is very common in us, especially in our elderly population,
03:43who have difficulty hearing.
03:45The signs of this are that they have difficulty communicating.
03:51They cannot understand our sentences, especially in noisy environments,
03:59especially if the hearing is uneven on the left and right.
04:03You will have difficulties in sound localization.
04:06You don't know where the sounds are coming from,
04:08like the sounds of an ambulance.
04:11Or sometimes, our hearing is noisy.
04:13Sometimes, we are at the market, and there is a conversation,
04:16and there is a lot of background noise,
04:19like in the market, supermarket, or even in the church,
04:22there is a lot of reverberation of sounds.
04:25It is difficult for our brain to process if our hearing is uneven.
04:30Most of the time, there are communication difficulties,
04:33and sometimes, our ears are deaf, especially in the elderly.
04:38This could be a sign that our hearing is weakening,
04:43be it for long-term or short-term.
04:45Tinnitus or deafness is a very common complaint among our patients
04:51who have a weak hearing.
04:53Doc, is there a possible effect on our hearing
04:56if we use earphones for a long time,
04:59or if we use loud sounds?
05:04Yes.
05:04Anyway, our ears receive energy in the form of sound.
05:12When we use our earphones,
05:15especially these days,
05:17it is very popular among young people to use in-ears.
05:21We use earphones or headphones,
05:24especially with modern music.
05:25There are a lot of bass sounds.
05:26It is very loud.
05:28So, in general, when we hear above 80 decibels,
05:35our predisposition for hearing loss is higher.
05:40If we hear for a long time, 80 decibels,
05:42and for 8 hours continuously,
05:46our predisposition for hearing loss is higher.
05:49So, 80 decibels.
05:50Usually, we hear those sounds day-to-day,
05:53even hair dryers, car horns,
05:56or even heavy traffic that is above 80 decibels.
05:59So, if we are exposed for more than 8 hours,
06:03our predisposition for hearing loss is higher.
06:07When we use our earphones,
06:11the general rule is that
06:13to avoid hearing loss due to overuse using earphones or headphones,
06:19the energy or volume we use should be less than 60%,
06:25and less than 60 minutes at a time.
06:29Alright, RRSP,
06:31with proper care of our ears,
06:33we can avoid hearing problems.
06:36Thank you very much, Dr. Franklin Luis Aves,
06:38for answering our medical questions.
06:40Thank you very much, sir.
06:42Thank you very much, too.
06:44Good morning to all of you.
