Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy has announced plans to cap ticket resale prices to protect fans from inflated costs. A consultation will explore options, including limiting resales to the original purchase price or allowing small uplifts for fees. Nandy criticised touts for exploiting fans with exorbitant prices and vowed to put fans "back at the heart of the music industry." Report by Covellm. 00:00Far too long people have been fleeced when they've tried to buy tickets to see their favourite bands.
00:05We've had examples in recent years, not just Oasis, but Coldplay tickets, Bruce Springsteen tickets,
00:11going for over a grand, which nobody can afford.
00:15Our message to ticket touts is that time is up.
00:18We're consulting today on a cap on ticket resales and enforcement action to make sure that that is upheld.
00:26Gone are the days when ticket touts are going to be able to buy up huge swathes of tickets and sell them on at vastly inflated prices.
00:34Once this consultation closes in a few weeks' time, we're going to take the action that fans have deserved for so long
00:41and put fans back at the heart of the music industry where they belong.
00:44It's perfectly reasonable for fans to say people should only be able to resell tickets at the price that they paid for them.
00:51There are some views that people should be able to recoup a little bit of additional money for costs that they might incur,
00:57say a charge that you have to put that ticket on a website, for example.
01:02So we're consulting on whether there ought to be some kind of uplift in the amount that you can charge when you sell the ticket on.
01:08But make no mistake, a price cap is coming and the time for ticket touts to continue fleecing people is over.
01:15This is a scandal that's been happening in plain sight for far too long.
01:19And what has never been gripped is the fact that touts can buy up large numbers of tickets and then sell them on
01:27with no limit on what they charge for those secondary ticket resales.
01:31That's what we're determined to tackle and that's what this consultation will do.
