The Senedd is increasing in numbers at the next election, but could also increase in their pay soon. The politicians themselves don’t decide on the pay, but it could rub some people up the wrong way after struggles to implement pay rises for nurses and other public sector workers over the last few years.

00:00Pay rises have been a big point of contention across a number of different fields in recent
00:06years. We've seen strike action over pay, and plenty of people might still feel like
00:10they haven't been given the pay rises they deserve.
00:14So it might be a bit of a kick in the teeth for some people that Senate members could
00:18soon set to be due a pay rise.
00:22Under recently published proposals, politicians in Cardiff Bay could be paid an extra 6% pay
00:27rise from 2025 to 2026, which goes against the standard 3% pay rise which has been in
00:33place since 2021.
00:37The increase would bring their pay up to over £76,000 a year from over the £72,000 currently,
00:43with ministers and other roles being paid more again.
00:47Senate members don't themselves have control over the pay rise as it's set by an independent
00:51board, and it's similar to pay rises that we've seen recently given to the Scottish
00:56and UK Parliament.
