00:00This month of January is Thyroid Awareness Month.
00:04This month, the public's awareness of thyroid-related diseases and thyroid cancer is increasing.
00:10That's right. Here at CineDoc, we are joined by Head and Neck Surgeon, Dr. Joseph Ray Richard Cedeno.
00:18Good morning, Dr. King. Welcome to Rise and Shine, Philippines. This is Dian and Audrey.
00:22Good morning.
00:23Good morning. Thank you for having me.
00:27Okay, Doc, before we continue, for those of our viewers who don't know or have forgotten,
00:33can you explain what thyroid is and what its function is in our body?
00:40Okay. Thyroid is located here, right in front of our brain.
00:45The function of our thyroid gland is very important because it controls our metabolism.
00:53In simple terms, let's make it simple. It's like the battery of our body.
00:58It produces a chemical called FT3 and FT4.
01:02It's like the one that gives electricity to our body or speeds up our metabolism.
01:09It's important because it helps to control our heartbeat, whether it's fast or slow,
01:19our thoughts, whether our thoughts are sharp or not, it depends on the chemical that our body produces.
01:29The function of this thyroid is very important.
01:32Right, Doc? There are two types of thyroid disease, hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, hypo and hyper.
01:40What is the difference between the two?
01:43Yes, that's very important.
01:45The chemical that our thyroid gland produces, FT3 and FT4,
01:49if the production of those hormones is too high, that's called hyperthyroidism.
01:58The opposite is hypothyroidism.
02:00We can compare hyperthyroidism to...
02:04It's like you're having a lot of coffee.
02:06You're having palpitations, you're waking up, it's hard to sleep, you get hot easily.
02:12The opposite is hypothyroidism.
02:16It's like you're lacking energy.
02:19You're tired, you're sleepy, you think slowly,
02:24you become drowsy, your body lacks energy.
02:31Those are the low thyroid hormones.
02:35Well, Doc, what happens to a person's body when they have hypothyroidism?
02:44That's right.
02:45The signs of hyperthyroidism are good.
02:48It's like you're having a lot of coffee.
02:50Your metabolism is fast, your energy is fast.
02:53You get tired easily.
02:55The patient gets tired.
02:56There are others, their eyes get blurry.
02:58They have palpitations, they're always nervous, it's hard to sleep.
03:02That's hyperthyroidism.
03:04Hypothyroidism, on the other hand, is the opposite.
03:07You get nervous because your metabolism is slow.
03:10Your heart beats slow.
03:12There are others, their hair falls off and their skin becomes dry and constipated.
03:18It's hard to sleep.
03:20Those are the other signs of hypothyroidism.
03:24All right.
03:25Doc, what are the risk factors
03:27or what could be the reasons for a thyroid problem?
03:32One of them is individual.
03:36Well, first and foremost,
03:39one cause is the lack of iodine in the body.
03:42But most of our food today has a lot of iodine.
03:46And you can get iodine from seafood, fish, shellfish, even from meat.
03:51Beef and chicken, not much on pork.
03:55The amount of iodine in beef or chicken is low,
03:58but it's still higher than in shellfish.
04:00You can also get this from eggs, veggies, fruits.
04:06Other causes of problems with thyroid would be high risk.
04:11If there's a family with a goiter,
04:14it's better to get it checked.
04:17Infection, even viral infection can cause thyroid problems.
04:22Okay.
04:23Okay, Doc, what are the symptoms?
04:25Are there any early signs or symptoms
04:29that an individual might have
04:32to recognize that this is a thyroid problem?
04:37Commonly, the first thing to check is if there's a bump in the front of the neck.
04:42If there's a bump, it's better to get it checked right away
04:46if there's a bump in the front of the neck.
04:50The second thing is palpitations.
04:53If your hands are shaking,
04:55it's also a sign that your thyroid hormones are rising
04:59and there's hyperthyroidism.
05:02So the most common thing is a bump in the neck, palpitations,
05:06nervousness, rapid weight gain.
05:09Those are the common signs and symptoms.
05:13But commonly, it runs in the family.
05:16So if there's a family, it's better to get it checked.
05:19Alright.
05:20How do we diagnose if a person has a thyroid problem?
05:25There are blood tests that we do.
05:27It's called the Thyroid Stimulating Hormone or TSH.
05:30We check the thyroid hormones,
05:33FT4, 3T3, 3T4,
05:36and most importantly, the thyroid ultrasound.
05:40Those are the basic things that we check
05:42to find out if there's a thyroid problem.
05:45Okay.
05:46How can an individual avoid having a thyroid problem?
05:54That's healthy living.
05:56First of all, I've repeatedly said that it can run in the family.
06:02So if there's a family, get it checked immediately.
06:07Eat food that are rich in iodine.
06:11There are foods that decrease the absorption of iodine.
06:14These are cabbage, broccoli, and fish.
06:17But if it's cooked or boiled, it will have no effect.
06:21Because there are foods that decrease iodine in our body.
06:25If it's fresh food.
06:27But if it's cooked, not much effect.
06:29One thing that's important to know is that thyroid,
06:32even though it's a cancer,
06:34it's usually curable.
06:36So it's better to get it checked early and get well soon.
06:42Doc, is there a connection to paninigarilyo?
06:47Paninigarilyo increases the risk of cancer.
06:52So yes, it can be related.
06:55It decreases our immune system.
06:57And thus, it can cause thyroid cancer.
07:01All right.
07:02Doc, for those who don't have time to get checked up,
07:07is there anything you can do at home to check if it's possible
07:11that a person has a problem with their thyroid?
07:16Like what we talked about earlier,
07:18the signs and symptoms,
07:20if there's a tightness,
07:21sometimes it tightens the neck.
07:23Especially if there's a tightness in the mucous,
07:25and if you move,
07:26the mucous also moves.
07:28Most likely, the problem is in the thyroid.
07:31If the mucous moves and doesn't move,
07:34it's usually just pulmonary.
07:36But if you move,
07:37and the mucous moves along with the movement,
07:40it's possible that there's a goiter or thyroid nodule.
07:43A goiter is a thyroid gland that grows or has a mucous inside.
07:49It's called a goiter or bosho in Tagalog.
07:53Okay, Doc.
07:54Lastly,
07:55what is your message or advice to our RSPs,
07:59especially this Thyroid Awareness Month?
08:03Let's not neglect our thyroid.
08:05It's a very important part of our body.
08:08If there's a problem,
08:09there's a chance that you'll have a goiter,
08:11and if there's a history in the family,
08:13you should get it checked immediately.
08:15It's often used as a medicine,
08:17and it can be used as a remedy.
08:19Well, thank you very much
08:21for the information you shared with us,
08:23Dr. King Cedeno.
08:24Thank you for the free medicine.
08:26Thank you very much, Doc.
08:28You're welcome.
