00:00In the month of March, let's call it Rabies Awareness Month.
00:03It's an important opportunity to expand our knowledge about rabies and how to avoid it.
00:10If that's the case, Audrey, we have a veterinarian with us, Dr. Marlo Wisco,
00:15to provide important information and chat that will help our salvation.
00:20Good morning and welcome to Rise and Shine Philippines and welcome back to PTV.
00:24Dr. Marlo, thank you so much for being with us this morning.
00:26Good morning, Doc.
00:27Thank you so much for having me here this morning.
00:31As of now, rabies is more commonly known as rabies here in the Philippines.
00:35How important is it for our countrymen to know about it?
00:39Okay, so it's important because aside from the fact that rabies is caught in the bite of an animal,
00:49primarily, it affects people and especially, it can cause death.
00:55Okay, Doc, what are the symptoms if you have rabies?
01:00Okay, in humans, primarily, there's a fever, body aches, and there's also delirium.
01:12And there's also pain or swelling in the wound.
01:16Okay.
01:17And there's also paralysis and fear of water and wind.
01:24Okay.
01:25This is a big help to our countrymen.
01:28You need to answer this, Doc.
01:29Yes.
01:30What should we do, for example, if you were bitten by a dog or if you have a pet cat?
01:35Yes, first of all, our countrymen should do,
01:39so if you were bitten or paralyzed,
01:41we should get a soap and soak our wound in running water.
01:48And we should put it in front of running water.
01:51And after this, we should apply Betadine.
01:55And after this, we should go to the nearest hospital or animal bite and treatment center.
02:03Alright, Doc.
02:04So, how do we know if we need to get an injection,
02:08if you were bitten or paralyzed?
02:12Because sometimes, when you're bitten, it's not there.
02:15It's just shallow, right?
02:16Yes.
02:17When you're bitten or paralyzed,
02:21we should not neglect it.
02:24Because we don't know if an animal is infected or not.
02:31So, we should not be complacent if we were bitten or paralyzed.
02:35So, even if we have a pet cat,
02:43we should not be complacent.
02:45Because rabies, when it has an infection in the brain and the nervous system,
02:51it's irreversible and it can't be cured.
02:54But if the dog is at home,
02:57if you were bitten, can rabies be cured?
03:00Yes, usually, it can be cured.
03:05But if you don't have enough information about your pet,
03:13or if you don't have enough information about the pet that has rabies,
03:18it's better for you to have an initiative.
03:22To be sure.
03:23Yes.
03:24Let's talk about prevention.
03:26When should we vaccinate our pets?
03:29Our pets should be vaccinated at least yearly.
03:37But if the incidence of rabies is high in one place,
03:41sometimes, the program of other vet clinics is twice a year for every six months.
03:47Alright, Doc. What are the common misconceptions about rabies?
03:50And how do you want to address this?
03:52Okay. So, a common misconception about rabies is that
03:56rabies is transmitted to dogs and cats.
04:00So, rabies is not inborn.
04:02They only get rabies when they are bitten by an infected animal.
04:08Well, based on the data,
04:11is the incidence of rabies increasing or decreasing?
04:16Okay. So, based on our data from last year,
04:20we have 426 rabies death-related cases.
04:28That's just death.
04:29Yes. And since January to March 1, 2025,
04:34we have 55 death-related rabies cases.
04:40That's a lot.
04:41That's why we should have an initiative
04:45to vaccinate our pets against rabies.
04:50But, Professor, this is what I want to know.
04:52Because I heard that, depending on the time,
04:55does our climate have a connection?
04:57For example, if it's hot, it's possible for our pets to get rabies.
05:01No. It's just a myth.
05:04So, rabies, for example,
05:08if you are bitten,
05:10it has an incubation period of 2 to 3 months.
05:15And sometimes, there are dormant types
05:18that last longer than others
05:22before they have manifestations or clinical symptoms.
05:28Doc, if I am bitten,
05:30should I go to the hospital right away?
05:33Yes.
05:33Where can I get vaccinated?
05:34Yes.
05:34Do I need to go right away?
05:35Yes.
05:35So, will rabies activate in your body right away?
05:38Yes. And at the same time,
05:40usually, if our pet is vaccinated,
05:44for example, if your dog is vaccinated,
05:48and I was bitten,
05:49usually, we still need to go to the animal bite and treatment center,
05:53not because of the rabies vaccine.
05:57The body of the anti-rabies vaccine is the anti-tetanus vaccine.
06:01Oh, so it's for anti-tetanus.
06:03Yes.
06:04But what is that?
06:05You're getting vaccinated,
06:06and you're vaccinating your dog with anti-rabies,
06:10so you still need to go to the animal bite?
06:12Yes. Just to make sure.
06:15So, we need to make sure,
06:16because as you said, it can cause death, right?
06:18Yes.
06:19There are also data that show that it can cause death.
06:21It can cause sadness.
06:22And also, there is no known treatment
06:25if the dog has an infection in the brain.
06:29Oh, if it spreads.
06:30As of this month of March,
06:33Rabies Awareness Month,
06:35what is your message to our fellow countrymen?
06:38So, my message to our fellow countrymen,
06:41taking care of your pet is not a privilege,
06:45but a responsibility.
06:47So, because of our responsibility,
06:49our responsibility is to vaccinate our pets.
06:53So, if we don't bring our pets to the nearest vet clinic,
06:59we have active city and municipal vets
07:04who visit our barangays
07:06to give free anti-rabies vaccines.
07:10Even for us,
07:12there is an anti-rabies vaccination for your pets.
07:17So, let's be responsible to our pets.
07:20As much as possible, let's vaccinate them.
07:22On that note, thank you very much for your time.
07:26Today, to share important information about Rabies,
07:30Dr. Marlo Wisco.
07:32Thank you very much, Doc.
07:33Thank you very much, too.
