00:00So let's catch you up at the very latest before we get into some of the results.
00:04One of the announcements that was made today in particular, not a big surprise, the Jaguars
00:07have dismissed Doug Peterson as their head coach.
00:10So Peterson, of course, with the Jaguars for several years, 15 games under .500 as the
00:15head coach there, ends up being let go.
00:18Shad Khan, the owner of the Jaguars, starting a new search.
00:22Trent Balke, the GM, looks like he will be back to conduct that search as well.
00:26Maybe a little bit of a surprise, late yesterday we found out that we have a one and done coach
00:30in the National Football League, Gerard Mayo, coaching the Patriots after the departure
00:34of Bill Belichick.
00:35He was fired as well.
00:36New England was one of the worst records in the NFL this season.
00:40One and done coach is fired over the last few years.
00:42Not only just Gerard Mayo, but also Frank Reich was fired in 2023, Lovie Smith in 2022,
00:48Nathaniel Hackett, David Culley, Urban Meyer.
00:52Generally this does happen every so often.
00:55And a statement from Robert Kraft was also released where he says we have tremendous
00:59fans who expect and deserve a better product than what we have delivered in recent years.
01:03I apologize for that.
01:04I've given a lot of thought and consideration to what actions to take, expediting the process,
01:09returning to a championship and determine this is the best move right now.
01:13One potential suitor for the Patriots head coaching position could be their former player
01:16Mike Vrabel, who is a free agent coach at the moment.
01:20Last night in the National Football League, the best game of the week, without a doubt,
01:24could have been the game between the Vikings and Lions.
01:27Turned out to pretty much look like the Lions deserve to be the number one seed and the
01:30winner of the NFC North.
01:31They're going to be the number one seed to get the bye.
01:34And the Lions had their best season ever after they culminated their win against the Vikings
01:38yesterday.
01:39Minnesota's offense really struggled throughout this game.
01:41So Dan Campbell, naturally after the 31 to 9 win, recognized that not only did the offense
01:46show up once again, but this time it was the defense that set the tone.
01:50How's it going?
01:53Man, what a win.
01:55What a win.
01:56Guys, you know, I can't say enough about our defense.
01:59Let me start there, man.
02:00A.G. in this defense, they really, you know, control that game for us, particularly the
02:06first half, first, you know, two and a half quarters.
02:11The guys on defense, I thought, executed exactly the way that we had worked and what we had
02:18talked about.
02:19We were able to apply a lot of pressure and it just paid dividends.
02:24You know, that's a good team over there.
02:26They're well coached.
02:28Kevin O'Connell does a great job.
02:30A ton of weapons and we were able to contain them and keep them at bay until our offense
02:37was able to, you know, to find our rhythm.
02:40So just total team effort started with our defense and took the whole unit.
02:47But, man, what a great job.
02:49Back-to-back division winners in the NFC North.
02:54Got the one seed, 15 wins.
02:56I just couldn't be more proud of those guys.
02:58And, you know, I just told them that to me, you know, this has been in the making for a while.
03:07You know, it takes a special group of guys and I think you kind of had to go through
03:11what we've been through over the last four years, the core of this unit.
03:14And then anybody that comes in, they fall in line because that's what we're built around is our core.
03:20And they really delivered for us today.
03:24Our playmakers made plays when we needed it.
03:27We'll see the Lions in two weeks.
03:29And Kevin O'Connell, the coach of the Vikings, said they'll also see the Vikings
03:33or the Lions in two weeks.
03:35We will see.
03:36Giants making the announcement this morning.
03:38Brian Dable, head coach, coming back for another season.
03:41And also Joe Shane coming back as well.
03:43The Giants lost to the Eagles.
03:44They're going to have a top five pick in the upcoming NFL draft.
03:48So the Giants finish off their very difficult season with a loss.
03:52The Buccaneers needed every point that they could muster against the New Orleans Saints.
03:56Saints led this one for a long period of time as the Bucs were 14 and a half point favorites.
04:01And now the Bucs do advance.
04:03They win the division.
04:04They'll take on the Washington Commanders next week.
04:06They've been running the ball extremely well.
04:08Bucky Irving has been a star for them, along with Baker Mayfield.
04:10And Baker knows how valuable Irving has been to their backfield.
04:13Mike, for sure, was happy that Bucky Irving got that touchdown
04:17because he wants to win more than anything else.
04:19He puts his team above his own personal accolade.
04:22How much more does that make you want to go out there
04:25and get him that eight-yard pass that you did at the end there?
04:29Because he's always put the team first.
04:30He always has.
04:31And that's why you love him.
04:33That's why we appreciate having him.
04:35We're lucky to have him.
04:38He's underappreciated throughout the media, the league, and he's one of one.
04:44And he deserves that.
04:45So, obviously, you saw the stadium erupt, the whole sideline erupt.
04:49You can tell how much people care about him
04:51and what that means for everybody around him.
04:53What were your thoughts when Bucky scored on that play
04:55rather than drop him down at the 5 or 6-yard line?
04:57It's a piece of s**t.
05:00We won the game, great,
05:01but now I'm going to be the guy that didn't get the 1,000 yards.
05:05Now he's going to have to play 11 more years after that
05:07before we're going to get him that.
05:09No, but it was, obviously, most important thing is winning.
05:12All jokes aside, most important thing is winning,
05:14but you have a little second on the sideline there
05:16to realize that you're that close to it.
05:18And God is great.
05:20Got us the ball back.
05:21Defense got a stop,
05:22and so we were able to get one more play to him.
05:24And the Bucks will be three-point favorites this coming week
05:26against Washington.
05:27Meanwhile, while this game of the day between Atlanta and Carolina,
05:30for a moment it looked like the Falcons
05:32could end up getting that division title,
05:34but they did fall in overtime to a very good Carolina Panthers offense.
05:3844 points.
05:39Panthers played much better down the stretch,
05:41including Bryce Young.
05:42Falcons were 7.5-point favorites,
05:44and they crawled to the finish line,
05:47although Michael Penix played very well.
05:49A lot of discussion what could go on in Atlanta.
05:51We'll keep an eye on that as well today.
05:52The Denver Broncos rolled out their starters.
05:54The Chiefs did not, and Denver ends up winning this one 38-0.
05:58The Broncos make the playoffs.
05:59The Chiefs didn't play anyone in the game.
06:01Washington Commanders, 6.5-point favorites.
06:04At the end, earlier in the week, the line was 3, 4.5,
06:07depending on where you got it.
06:08Maybe you got a push or even a win.
06:10They go to Dallas and cap off their season,
06:12so again, they'll play Tampa this week.
06:13Meanwhile, the Green Bay Packers are going to take on the Eagles next week.
06:16We'll see if Christian Watson is going to play in this game.
06:19He was carted off with a non-contact injury, 24-22.
06:23The Bears beat the Packers' final game of the season.
06:25Also, Justin Herbert came from behind to beat the Las Vegas Raiders.
06:29A score is closer than it indicated, 34-20 the final.
06:32But the Chargers have been challenged in almost every game this season.
06:35Justin Herbert, their quarterback,
06:36said that challenge could lead to good things in the playoffs.
06:39And just kind of everything you guys have, you know,
06:41all the games you've won this year, the ups and downs you guys have been through,
06:44how do you think this all kind of has prepared you guys
06:46to play postseason football this year?
06:48Yeah, I think adversity is a great teacher,
06:49and we've seen our fair share of it.
06:51And having gone through, you know, the tight games, the close ones,
06:54the tough losses, you know, we're better because of it.
06:57We've watched the film, and we've done everything we can to correct those mistakes.
07:00You know, we're honest with ourselves when we watch the film the following day,
07:03and we say, you know, this is what we've got to do better,
07:05and this is what we've done well.
07:07And at the same time, as long as we're able to be honest with ourselves
07:10and to continue to progress, move on, and develop,
07:13you know, we're going in the right direction.
07:15All right, so the Chargers pick up the win,
07:17and the Miami Dolphins fall in their final game of the season
07:20to Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets.
07:22Boy, if Rodgers just played against the Dolphins all season,
07:24he would have been the MVP, right?
07:26Four more touchdown passes against Miami.
07:2832-20, the final.
07:30Dolphins announce their head coach, NGM, will return next season.
07:33Also, the Colts will bring back their head coach, NGM,
07:36as was announced by Ursa yesterday.
07:39Final, 26-23.
07:41Colts end up winning that game.
07:43The Tennessee Titans take out the Titan—Houston, Texas, excuse me,
07:47take out the Tennessee Titans, got it right, 23-14.
07:50Tennessee has the number one overall pick in the draft.
07:52Okay, Lamar Jackson on Saturday, crush the Browns, 35-10.
07:55We'll see if he or Josh Allen wins the MVP.
07:57And the Steelers now have lost four straight games
07:59as they head into the playoffs.
08:00The Bengals win, 19-17.
08:02Okay, let's go over to the D3 championship in college football.
08:05We don't want to ignore them.
08:06North Central beats Mountain Union, 41-25, the final.
08:10Also, former Boise State quarterback Malachi Nelson
08:12is going to play for UTEP next season.
08:15Jayden Rashada, the quarterback who was transferred
08:17from Florida to Georgia, will transfer again
08:20as he enters the portal.
08:21And Zachariah Branch and Zion Branch transfer to Georgia from USC.
08:26Also, Jonathan Kuminga of the Golden State Warriors
08:28involved in some trade discussion recently,
08:30potentially for Jimmy Butler.
08:32Forget all that.
08:33He sprained his ankle.
08:34He's going to be out three weeks.
08:35No word on Butler's return to Miami, by the way.
08:39Don't go away.
08:40Welcome back to Newswire.
08:41We'll hit back Adam Kaplan here in just a few minutes.
08:43Let's check in with Pat Evans from Legal Sports Report
08:45as we start off our new week of discussion
08:48on sports wagering going on across the country.
08:50Pat, great to have you back here on Newswire.
08:52Let's begin and start off in Maryland.
08:55And you can read about the story, by the way,
08:56at lsr, legalsportsreport.com.
08:58Some potential online casino progress here.
09:02In fact, one of the state legislatures,
09:03from what I'm reading here, said,
09:05well, this could happen without the sky falling.
09:07So it must seem like there's some opposition
09:09coming in a big way for this to happen.
09:12Yeah.
09:13So first of all, right now we're heating up
09:15in legislative season.
09:18A lot of them are taking off on Wednesday to start.
09:21So we're going to be talking a lot about legislation
09:23here in the coming weeks, Craig.
09:24Just kind of sports betting in states
09:26that we haven't seen legalized yet,
09:29online casino in a lot of states,
09:31sports betting taxes, what have you.
09:33First thing to note on online casino
09:35is there's only a few markets in the country that have it,
09:37including Michigan, where I am.
09:40And it's been a lot slower to pick up legalization-wise
09:43than the industry might have hoped.
09:44And I don't think that's really going to change,
09:46especially with the new headwinds
09:48against online gambling.
09:49You know, we've talked about it here
09:51at the U.S. Senate hearing,
09:53the U.S. federal bills targeting online gambling, the likes,
09:57and just general public feeling right now
10:00is kind of anti-gambling.
10:02And so that's going to affect
10:03a lot of these state-level discussions.
10:05But in Maryland, we've got a former representative
10:08who introduced a bill last year for online casino
10:11and actually got it through the Maryland House,
10:14delegate Vanessa Atterberry.
10:16She's introducing another bill.
10:18It will begin in her Ways and Means Committee
10:21that she chairs and held a very lengthy hearing
10:23last year to discuss it.
10:25And yeah, she said, you know, we can do this.
10:27We need to do this.
10:28There's illegal gambling happening.
10:31But yeah, to your point,
10:33she said we can do it without the sky falling.
10:35It's important that we do this.
10:36She talks about how she's not a gambler,
10:38but she'll go to casinos for events and stuff
10:41to kind of quell the cannibalization discussions
10:44that we also heard in Maryland last year.
10:46Now, the problem here is the Senate in Maryland.
10:49Senator Ron Watson introduced a pretty similar bill
10:53to Atterberry last year,
10:55but the Senate is less friendly to gaming,
10:58it appears, for right now.
10:59It did not even take up Atterberry's bill.
11:02And Watson, you know, went to the National Council
11:05of Legislators from gaming states last year,
11:07talked about kind of the lessons learned.
11:09He said there's a lot of campaigning
11:11that needs to be done internally in the Senate
11:13kind of to educate what this means and why it's important.
11:17We'll see if anything changes on the Senate floor this year.
11:21We'll see if the House can kind of redo last year.
11:24It was a pretty overwhelming vote for in the House.
11:27So we'll see if that wave kind of continues over.
11:30But again, a lot of headwinds against online gambling.
11:33So be kind of surprised if this does pass,
11:36but Maryland is certainly one of the states to watch
11:39in terms of states that could get it done this year.
11:41All right, so now let's follow up
11:43and ask the same question about Illinois.
11:46You know, we've been talking about them, by the way,
11:48through the end of the year into this year, too.
11:50What are their chances of getting this done?
11:52This one is also interesting
11:54because now you've got Governor JB Pritzker saying,
11:56you know, this is something we should consider.
11:58And it comes as he's probably working on his budget
12:02that needs to be proposed by February.
12:05And they're going to have something
12:07like a $3 billion budget shortfall.
12:09So they need revenue.
12:11And, you know, a representative
12:13who has introduced bills in the past
12:15says this is a great way to raise revenue.
12:18The senator who was speaking of it
12:21has introduced it both of the previous two sessions.
12:25They run two year lengths, so 2021 and 2023.
12:29And I assume she will again this year.
12:31But with Pritzker saying, you know,
12:33this is something we should consider,
12:35you have to think that carries some weight in Illinois.
12:38We know Pritzker is a fairly friendly person to gambling.
12:42You know, they've opened up sports betting
12:44since he took office.
12:45They've added some new casinos to the state.
12:48It's not all friendly.
12:49You know, they did raise the taxes to a tiered level
12:53based on your revenue for sports books last year.
12:56So it's not all friendly,
12:57but JB Pritzker is very friendly to the industry.
13:00So it'll be interesting to see
13:01if he does, in fact, include this in the budget
13:03or maybe they go about it the other way
13:05with just straight legislation.
13:08Again, something interesting to watch.
13:10Again, you know, there are plenty of headwinds against this.
13:14Lots of, you know, the public is kind of wary
13:17about the expansion into gambling,
13:20having sports books already.
13:21You know, you might see some more responsible
13:24gambling action in Illinois as well,
13:26just kind of to say, hey,
13:27we're going to pay attention to this
13:30as well as expand it a little bit more.
13:32But the expansion is important to keep it regulated
13:35and in the public eye.
13:36All right.
13:37So let's close it out with the possibility
13:40of Alabama getting going with some sports betting here.
13:43And, you know, I know that there's going to be
13:44a lot of opposition on this one,
13:46as there has been for years, Pat.
13:48I guess the workaround here is they're trying to move,
13:51it looks like, through the Senate
13:52as opposed to the House.
13:54I'm not saying that this is circumventing anything.
13:56It's just maybe a different way of proposition
13:58to get this done.
13:59Alabama is such an interesting state.
14:01And it's one that I've actually come to kind of enjoy watching
14:05because it is so interesting.
14:07Over the past couple of years,
14:09it is one of five states without a state lottery.
14:12So you start there.
14:13And that's one of the things that they focus on
14:16is any of the gambling bills really starts there
14:18by creating an Alabama lottery.
14:21From there, it's kind of expanding.
14:23You know, they figure, basically,
14:26let's go ahead and go big and have casinos
14:29and online sports betting and all the like
14:32by including that in the lottery bill.
14:35Now, a couple years ago,
14:36there was a Senate bill that did all of that.
14:39It passed the Senate.
14:40It went to the House and didn't pass.
14:43So the next time around, the Senate goes,
14:45okay, we're going to give it to the House.
14:47The House pretty much bases what they put together
14:50in a package and sent it to the Senate.
14:54The Senate said no.
14:55And in a conference committee,
14:57they stripped most of the casino language.
14:59They stripped online sports betting.
15:01The House still passed it.
15:02The Senate didn't pass it.
15:04And so that's where we're at this year.
15:06We've got a House minority leader saying,
15:08okay, you know, we've come really close.
15:10We've done this a couple of times.
15:12It seems like we agree to wanting to do this sort of stuff.
15:16So you know what?
15:18We did it last year.
15:19You guys can go ahead and try to do it again.
15:21At the same time, you've got a Senate leader saying,
15:23you know, we're going to continue to approach this conservative,
15:26more conservative than the House.
15:29So you know, it kind of seems like a stalemate.
15:32I wouldn't be surprised at some point if they just come to an agreement,
15:36go ahead and pass a lottery,
15:38and then from there in the future sessions kind of expand it from there,
15:42including online sports betting,
15:44especially if you see Georgia and Mississippi go online,
15:47then you're going to see some more pressure in Alabama, I would think.
15:51Yeah.
15:52I mean, Craig, there's a lot of legislation coming on board.
15:55As I've mentioned,
15:56we're going to be talking about a lot of these in the coming weeks.
15:59I mean, we've got more online casino coming.
16:02We've got Minnesota heating up.
16:03We got, and can't forget,
16:05Missouri is going to be launching here in a couple of months.
16:08That should have an update for you soon.
16:11Okay.
16:12Yeah.
16:13A lot of stuff happening, Craig.
16:14All right.
16:15We'll keep an eye on it, Pat.
16:16And as always,
16:17check out all of your articles over at LegalSportsReport.com.
16:20Thanks again for coming on the show.
16:21Thanks as always, Craig.
