00:00Welcome to news today. Exciting news last night. Obviously,
00:15games and news are abound as the start of the NFL season and
00:20we got off to a pretty good start. Chiefs and Ravens in a
00:24battle last night. Obviously, missed by a toe. We'll get into
00:27that in just a moment. But breaking news now is that Jalen
00:31Ramsey has read the cornerback market yet again in the NFL.
00:36Patrick Sertan just days ago become the highest paid
00:39cornerback in the NFL. He is now surpassed by a Jalen Ramsey
00:44extension with the Miami Dolphins. That three-year
00:47extension's worth $24.1 million per year to make him the
00:51highest paid cornerback in the NFL history for a second time
00:54in his career. According to Adam Schefter, the deal
00:57negotiated by David Mulgetta of athletes first. So, Mulgetta,
01:02excuse me. So, it seems like they were working on this for
01:07several weeks talking about an extension and once the
01:10Sertandale came in to actually reset the market, it gave them
01:14impetus to extend Jalen Ramsey. He turns 30 next month. So, not
01:18a young player but still one of the top corners in the league
01:22and I think obviously a great thing for the Miami Dolphins to
01:27create some stability in the defense after losing a key
01:30piece like Christian Wilkins in the offseason. It's a good
01:33momentum for them going into this season. So, back to last
01:37night's game, we had the Chiefs and the Ravens. Clearly, the
01:44big news there was Lamar Jackson once again continuing to run. I
01:50think you shouldn't be out of a game like that because it's a
01:54very tough place to go and win time of year and they're on a
01:58celebratory night like the Ravens had to. A very tough
02:01environment. I thought the offense was a little bit
02:04perky, jerky. A lot of Lamar trying to create plays on his
02:07own. Isaiah likely had a massive game on the flip side
02:10for the Chiefs. Rasheed Rice, clearly a big part of the
02:13passing offense. Uh doesn't have to be the Travis Kelsey
02:16show anymore because Rice and Isaiah Pacheco carried the load
02:20last night. Mahomes making key plays. Lamar missing a wide
02:23open. Zay Flowers slash Rashad Bateman in the end zone but he
02:27did hit. Isaiah likely just missed that much. So, a tough
02:31start for the Ravens in terms of taking an L but I think the
02:35prospects for them this season are really good as long as they
02:37can try to protect Lamar Jackson a little better than
02:41they have been as you see right there. Toe so close. Isaiah
02:45likely thought he had it. There was a celebration but just out
02:48good call. Are the NFL cameras. So, uh got a clip
02:55here from Patrick Mahomes talking about last night's
02:57victory. No, it definitely nerve-wracking. I mean, just, I
03:01mean, could it look good from my angle on the sideline? Um
03:04but then the first view you saw, you could see the the
03:06cleat. Um so, uh that's a great football team and I'm sure
03:09we'll see him again at some point in the playoffs. So, now
03:12we we're we're happy with the win now and he's gotta wear
03:14white cleats next time. That's uh that's my that's my advice
03:17for him. I think it's just um I think everybody accepts
03:20everybody in this offense and um they learn so much from
03:22Trav. Um he and they pick they pick his brain and they listen
03:25to him talk to me and um we build all throughout the year
03:28and you know, you can see Rashid just kinda picked up
03:31right where he left off last year. Xavier made some big
03:33plays. Um and so, it's just, we're gonna continue to build
03:36and build and then hopefully get Hollywood back and uh see
03:38what this office can really be. 100%. I mean, just having him
03:42out there, it just opens up stuff. I mean, you saw when
03:44he's out there, they're playing shell coverages. It's getting
03:46guys like Trav and it's getting guys like uh Rashid
03:49open underneath and that's what's so great about this
03:51offense is we're able to do all of that and that's when that's
03:53when we're at our best and so like I said, we get Hollywood
03:56out there too. Um it's gonna be tough for defense to decide
03:58who they wanna cover. So, the Chiefs covered last night
04:03obviously just slightly over the total which came in around
04:07forty-six and a half. So, depends where you got it but uh
04:10forty-seven was the total last night. Here's John Harbaugh
04:13talking about the disappointment of starting off
04:16the season with a loss. Oh, I think Isaiah played just a
04:18great football game, a courageous game. I made so
04:20many plays especially down the stretch, play after play. Uh I
04:24put Lamar obviously in the same category. Uh all those guys. I
04:27mean, those guys were making plays and fighting. The
04:29offensive line, I thought did a heck of a job out there. A lot
04:32of question marks have, you know, the pundits and the
04:35prognosticators had about the offensive line saying that
04:37without offensive line, we couldn't do anything and uh to
04:40see the way they went out there and played against that
04:42defense, I thought was pretty impressive and that's a
04:44challenge especially in this environment. Communication and
04:47there's going to be problems on both sides uh but uh I thought
04:51Isaiah played a great football game. I was proud of him and a
04:53lot of other guys too. Alright, turning the page from last
04:57night into tonight's game which can be found exclusively on
05:01Peacock in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The Eagles will take on the
05:05Green Bay Packers. The Eagles favored by just under a field
05:09goal. Total of forty-nine and a half. Going to be exciting. The
05:13Eagles closed out the season losing six of their last seven
05:16games. The Packers closed out last season winning seven of
05:19their last ten including a blowout victory on the road in
05:23Dallas in the playoffs but can year number two of the full
05:26year of Jordan Love and that young receiving core reap even
05:30more rewards. We'll see tonight in Brazil. I'll tell you what I
05:34like in that game. Given the fact that it's such a late
05:37start. 915 PM Eastern and the teams have had to travel all
05:43this way. I'm going to lead towards my prime time under
05:46both offenses are explosive. I'd love nothing more than to
05:49see a lot of points on the board. I just think it's a
05:52little bit tricky considering all the travel and the time the
05:56start of the game. I think we'll see it a little under
05:58that pretty high total of forty-nine and a half. So, give
06:01me a prime time under tonight. Uh as we move on to other
06:06stories, big news in college and college business which is
06:10that the settlements that have been talked about it in the
06:14NCAA have now hit a little bit of a snag in that uh the judge
06:19has now basically sent it back to the lawyers to figure out if
06:23there's even a deal in place. So, all of these settlements
06:27that we think could move us into another era of college
06:29athletics are on hold. US District Court Judge Claudia
06:33Wilkin won't rule on the house settlement following today
06:36following yesterday's hearing and throw it back on the
06:38lawyers to find something workable. I think it seems
06:41likely to me that there will be a settlement uh according to a
06:45lot of the parties involved but we have to talk about this is
06:49NCAA Council Rakesh Kilaru. We have to talk about whether we
06:53have a deal. Uh they are the NCAA Council says they don't
06:57want to finalize the Hubbard settlement and without doing
07:01the house settlement, the house plaintiff say that's not
07:04the case. So, a lot of lawyering going on. Uh my it's
07:08my opinion and I have a lot of experience in this topic. It is
07:11my opinion not that I'm an attorney but I have a lot of
07:13experience following this and knowing the NCAA businesses
07:17pretty well. I think we're headed towards the settlement.
07:20It's just a snag in the process and we'll get there
07:23eventually. So, uh moving on uh Xavier Babadar AKA Chief
07:28Holic famous for wearing a wolf uniform in the stands at
07:33thirty years old is sentenced to seventeen years in prison
07:37for robberies. He would apparently go on the road where
07:40the chiefs were playing, rob a bank in that area, and then
07:45take off with whatever money he was able to find. So, he seems
07:49remorseful about it but he's going to be remorseful for a
07:52really long time because he'll be in prison for seventeen
07:55years. Uh Steelers Russell Wilson limited in practice due
07:59to calf tightness. Uh there are we're going to talk injuries a
08:03little bit later in the hour with Doctor Chow uh on some
08:07other injuries but this uh tough start to the season. The
08:09Steelers already not. I don't think any Steelers fan
08:12including me are particularly confident in the quarterback
08:15situation and have one of them the starter entering the season
08:18with uh perhaps a minor injury isn't great. Uh on in other
08:22quarterback news, Dak Prescott uh does not see Sunday's season
08:26opener against the Cleveland Browns as some sort of contract
08:29deadline to getting a an extension finalized. I think
08:33it's a good thing. The good news for Cowboys fans is Dak is
08:37not of the opinion that well, we didn't negotiate by opening
08:40day. So, we're just going to let it play out and we'll see
08:43what happens after the season. I think it's an indication that
08:46both parties want to see a conclusion to this negotiation
08:50and they will, they are willing to talk about it during this
08:53season.
08:57Are welcoming in Jim Gazzelli from Sports Report. Find him on
09:01X at uh Jim Gazzelli. So, Jim, good to see you. Uh NFL season
09:06underway. I know you're an excited Jets fan. We'll get to
09:08that in a moment. I know you're excited to uh boldly predict
09:12where they have never been before. So, uh we'll see uh
09:16we'll see what we can pick up later on but let's start in
09:19Massachusetts where uh regulators will put
09:21Massachusetts sports betting limits on center stage by early
09:25October. You can fill us in on those details. Yeah. So,
09:29Massachusetts sports betting regulators held an agenda
09:33setting meeting earlier this week and they marked September
09:3711th next Wednesday, this upcoming Wednesday for their
09:41round table with sports book operators to discuss wagering
09:46limits and this has been a a hot topic in Massachusetts for
09:51the last couple of months. Regulators started talking
09:54about this back in March. In May, they attempted to host a
09:58round table with operators who essentially blew them off. They
10:04did not show up. They did not attend the originally scheduled
10:09round table with regulators in Massachusetts and uh that that
10:15kind of upset the the regulators as as you could
10:19imagine. Uh some of the commissioners believe a little
10:22bit of the early discourse between the uh sports bettors
10:27themselves who are also invited to the round table uh might
10:31have upset the operators and and prevented them from wanting
10:36to show up initially. So, they've kind of gone back and
10:40forth over the last couple of weeks and months trying to find
10:44a date where the sports betting apps, the operators are
10:48expected now to attend this round table that is scheduled
10:52for next Wednesday and what the regulators want to know is what
10:59are the practices? How are the decisions being made around
11:04limiting sports bettors and of course, Mike is as you know,
11:08and and most everybody else listening most likely knows uh
11:11what we're referring to is essentially successful bettors
11:16being told or forced to um not be able to bet as much as as
11:22they want being, you know, limited to a couple of dollars
11:26per bet and obviously that upsets a lot of the successful
11:31sports bettors, the professional sports bettors um and they had
11:35a lot of things to say during that initial round table that
11:38the the operators blew off. So, a lot of back and forth over
11:42the last couple of weeks but we do have that date set for
11:46Wednesday, September 11th next week where the operators will
11:50get together with the regulators. Uh sports bettors
11:54will be there as well along with some responsible gaming
11:57groups to all sit down and hopefully have a nice calm and
12:02productive conversations around the um the strategies, the
12:07decisions, the processes around limiting sports bettors in
12:11Massachusetts. And Jim, the bottom line is if a better
12:15gets limited, they don't have much recourse to be able to
12:19fight it. They can appeal to that particular operator but if
12:23you happen to be and I know some people that are in this
12:25position, a successful prop better, you're going to be
12:29limited to example, for example, you can't bet any more
12:32than $20 on any props because they know if you have a high
12:36win rate, they don't want to be at risk of if they put up a
12:39bad line particularly on stuff like props that they could be
12:43taken for a lot of money on a given day. So, that's really
12:45where this happens and the betters don't have much
12:48recourse, correct? Yeah, you're absolutely right, Mike and I
12:51think what we've seen since Massachusetts legalized sports
12:55betting is that the that group of commissioners, those
12:59regulators are one of if not the most open and public in
13:04their decision making every single meeting that they have
13:08is streamed live on YouTube through their website and
13:12they're interested in hearing about these practices to see
13:14what they can do to help the public, help the better and
13:19you know, also make sure that everything is being followed to
13:25the letter of the gaming regulations in Massachusetts.
13:28So, we'll see what that discussion brings next week but
13:31you know, I think what we've seen over the last handful of
13:35months is that the regulators in Massachusetts are always
13:39willing to have these types of conversations in a public forum.
13:44I can stop there. How about Saratoga? The summer racing
13:48season wraps up in Saratoga and it was a good summer for them,
13:52correct? Yeah, handle was up a handful of millions of dollars,
13:56803.8 million bet on Saratoga races from mid-July through
14:03Labor Day, up a few million from last year which was
14:06positive. The average daily handle was up about 3% as well.
14:12Sort of the big note for me coming out of the summer was
14:15Traverse Day, their biggest day of the summer, $63 million in
14:18handle and it just reconfirms and kind of continues the trend
14:22that we've seen in horse racing so far this year where the big
14:26marquee mainstream events are the ones that are generating
14:31the most handle. We had record-setting handle on the
14:34Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes betting increased this year
14:38compared to last year, record-setting Belmont Stakes
14:41handle for a non-Triple Crown year and now we have the Traverse
14:45Stakes with that increase in handle as well and a lot of that
14:51early success this year during the Triple Crown season was
14:54driven in large part to the sportsbooks entering the
14:59marketplace. FanDuel had a record-setting day of horse
15:03betting for the Derby, Giraffe Kings and their DK Horse app was
15:07the most downloaded horse betting app on Derby Day. So
15:10these marquee events have really carried the water for the racing
15:15industry so far this year and we'll see what ultimately
15:18happens at the end of the year here coming up in the fall with
15:21the Breeders' Cup but for the most part we've seen these
15:25marquee events really boost the handle overall for the industry
15:30while some of the other smaller tracks that don't necessarily
15:32get a lot of national attention that are still you know sort of
15:36scrapping and clawing for whatever handle that they can
15:39get. Yeah eventizing and growing the size of the event is really
15:44key from a marketing perspective in a lot of different ways right
15:48on-site sales and tickets and concessions as well as the
15:53tangential betting handles that happen around those events so
15:58good news for Travers and Travers Day and Saratoga in
16:02general. Okay Ohio news in Ohio on the gambling front what's
16:08going on with Ohio positive news I presume. Yeah a couple of
16:12interesting notes coming out of Ohio from July they were up
16:16handle was up 43% this year compared to July of 2023 which
16:21is a positive it's a trend that we've seen across the country
16:25most markets especially the larger ones which I would I
16:29would lump Ohio in with those larger sports betting markets
16:32that we see around the U.S. just continuing to grow year over
16:36year which is a positive. Draft Kings had the most handle in
16:40the market for three straight months and what was interesting
16:43to me about that was that they've been giving away fewer
16:47promotional dollars so fewer free bets fewer bet credits odds
16:53boost bonus bets whatever you want to call it these days they
16:57were giving away fewer of those than Fandle and still were able
17:01to produce more volume where am I here 15.2 million dollars for
17:11Draft Kings in terms of promotional spending compared
17:15to 19.6 for Fandle though while Draft Kings does have that
17:21volume edge over the last couple of months since May Fandle has
17:25definitely outpaced them in terms of overall revenue 74
17:28million dollars in winnings for Fandle compared to 53.3 million
17:34for Draft Kings in Ohio for July. All right good stuff as
17:40always Jim Gonzalez from Legal Sports Report. The Jets win
17:42total this year is nine and a half. Jim are we over or are we
17:47under what are the expectations? I got like 10
17:49seconds for you. I'm going over all the way to the Super Bowl
17:54Mike. All right Jets and AFC champ the conference odds for
18:01the Jets are shoot. I can't get them. I'll do them on the way
18:05back. No there they are. Eight to one. Eight to one. Play it.
18:11Play it for Jim. We'll be back after this.
