00:00Naturally, the top story in the National Football League continues to be the story about Tyreek
00:08Hill, the Miami Dolphins wide receiver being detained prior to their game against the Jacksonville
00:13Jaguars.
00:14Late yesterday, police body cam video was released that showed the police taking Hill
00:21out of the car, putting him onto the ground and handcuffing him while Hill was trying
00:26to call his agent, I believe, or the team's security director.
00:31Both are named Drew, so one of the two.
00:34As Hill was saying that he had knee surgery and he was on the ground, there were also
00:38video of Calais Campbell, defensive lineman, trying to come to Tyreek Hill's aid, and naturally
00:43there's been a lot of discussion about this on social media.
00:47But first, let's give you the opinions.
00:49We'll start from the Miami-Dade Police Department, the president of the South Florida Police
00:55Benevolent Association, released a statement.
00:58Now, this statement was released, I want to make sure you understand this, prior to
01:02the video coming out.
01:03Again, prior to the video saying that before the Dolphins game yesterday, an incident occurred
01:10where Tyreek Hill was placed in handcuffs before being released.
01:12To be clear, at no time was he ever under arrest.
01:15He was being detained for officer safety after driving in a manner which he was putting himself
01:19and others in great danger.
01:22Upon being stopped, Hill was not cooperative immediately with the officers on the scene.
01:27They placed him in handcuffs and Mr. Hill, still uncooperative, refused to sit on the
01:30ground and was therefore redirected to the ground.
01:34And naturally speaking, the Miami Dolphins have their own opinions of this, as do a lot
01:37of people who saw the video as well.
01:40Very specifically, the Dolphins are obviously shocked by saying, in a release late yesterday,
01:45we are saddened by the overly aggressive and violent conduct directed toward Tyreek
01:50Hill, Calais Campbell, and Jonu Smith by police officers before yesterday's game.
01:57Again, this was released yesterday.
01:58It was both maddening and heartbreaking to watch the very people we trust to protect
02:02our community use such unnecessary force and hostility toward these players, yet it's a
02:08reminder that not every situation ends in peace, as we are grateful that this one did.
02:14So stay tuned to see what happens in the future with Tyreek Hill and certainly the
02:19Miami-Dade Police Department, a story that is not yet completed.
02:22Meanwhile, a new story with Deshaun Watson, yet again being sued by an individual that
02:26claims that Watson committed sexual assault while on a date with this person several years
02:32ago.
02:33Of course, Watson was sued, missed a lot of time in the NFL.
02:36The lawsuits are different.
02:38This was different than those other lawsuits that happened previously with the massage
02:42places.
02:43Deshaun Watson just can't get out of his own way.
02:45Let's just be honest.
02:46All right.
02:47The Buffalo Bill is not funny, I guess, but it's just continual stories about Deshaun
02:51Watson off the field while this guy can't even play well on the field.
02:56That's just a fact.
02:57Buffalo Bills have extended right tackle Spencer Brown.
03:01Four years, $72 million.
03:03This just coming down via NFL Network.
03:07We'll update this story for you with Dan Fates, who covers the bills coming up.
03:10$45 million guaranteed.
03:11Congrats to Spencer Brown.
03:13Last night in the NFL, started off looking like the Jets could give the San Francisco
03:1849ers a game last night.
03:20Didn't feel that way as the game went on.
03:22The big story from the game, by the way, happened beforehand, where Christian McCaffrey was
03:26declared inactive, unbeknownst to anyone, I guess.
03:30Although after the game, the starting running back said he knew about it on Friday and then
03:34sort of walked it back post game.
03:36But needless to say, the 49ers pick up the win very easy, 32 to 19.
03:40This game was not close from the second half on.
03:44Jordan Mason was the star of this one, rushed for over 150 yards in the game.
03:50He was fantastic for them.
03:51Brock Purdy also dissected the Jets defense, who gave up scores on eight different drives.
03:58That's exactly what you're looking for.
04:00And despite all of the distractions, McCaffrey out, Trent Williams holding out, Brandon
04:07Ayoub holding out.
04:08Their head coach Kyle Shanahan said they had a really good preseason and none of it affected
04:12them.
04:13Yeah, I mean, I'm with our team every day, so I know there's lots of news stories and
04:17stuff with holdouts and things like that and when are people coming back.
04:20But our guys have been awesome in practice.
04:22They've been very focused.
04:23You know, anytime guys don't get a lot of practice in, you know, I wish we could have
04:28more.
04:29So I wanted to mesh more with those guys who just got here this week.
04:31But being able to get four practices in with those guys, having the extra day, things
04:35like that, was great for them.
04:38Still got a long way to go today, by no means was perfect.
04:41There were some parts that were sloppy, but just overall, all three phases played really
04:46well together.
04:47Being able to score there at the end of the half and with the field goal, run the clock
04:51out, score the opening drive of the third quarter, our defense getting the two turnovers,
04:55our kicker going six for six, being able to have 37 runs, I look at that as a complete
05:01team goal that we try to do.
05:02So I was real happy with just the team overall.
05:06Let's move on to the rest of the news in the National Football League.
05:09We got news late yesterday, the Los Angeles Rams are going to be without their star wide
05:14receiver Puka Nkua for at least several weeks.
05:17Nkua was placed on injured reserve by the Rams and so don't expect him to see him in
05:23reality or fantasy, by the way, for the Rams over the next month.
05:27Rome Odunze, week to week with an MCL sprain for the Chicago Bears.
05:31He was hurt in Sunday's game against the Tennessee Titans.
05:35The Green Bay Packers will not put Jordan Love on injured reserve, which is good news
05:40for them.
05:41It means he can come back sooner than four weeks, although Malik Willis is going to start
05:44for the Packers this week and also Kedarious Tony has a new destination.
05:48This time he signs with the Cleveland Browns.
05:50All right, big week ahead in college football.
05:53Once again, Texas A&M and the SEC visits Gainesville and the Florida Gators.
05:58And after a really strong week last week, DJ Lagway looks like he's earned some playing
06:03time with Florida.
06:04Billy Napier saying yesterday that he will use both starter Graham Mertz and Lagway against
06:11the Aggies this coming week.
06:13Oklahoma State's linebacker Colin Oliver is going to be sidelined for an extended period
06:17of time because of a foot injury.
06:19Three time all big 12 selection.
06:22He left their game against Arkansas in the first half with the foot injury was on crutches.
06:28He's going to miss, looks like at least a month.
06:30Northwestern is panicking early on in their football season.
06:33Maybe they should.
06:34They're making a quarterback change after two games.
06:36Jack Lausch is going to start this week against Eastern Illinois.
06:40David Brown made the, David Braun made the announcement yesterday.
06:43Mike Wright was their starter.
06:45He did not throw a touchdown pass, didn't look very good as well.
06:49All right, let's get to some more college football news notes and information.
06:52We move now to the Oklahoma Sooners.
06:55Offensive lineman Garion Hatchett, a transfer from Washington, is going to miss the rest
06:59of the season after undergoing season ending surgery.
07:03Oklahoma has some big issues on their offensive line going into this week.
07:07The Pitt Panthers have fired their athletic director, Heather Leick.
07:11This happened yesterday saying that they're seeking a new vision for their college.
07:16And also Lane Kiffin takes a shot at the fans in Mississippi saying, we were crushing the
07:21team in the first half.
07:22I get it.
07:23We've got to stay in the second half of our games and support the team.
07:27That's what he said on the Zoom call yesterday.
07:28Lane Kiffin never afraid to say anything to the media.
07:31All right.
07:32In Major League Baseball yesterday, was it the last start of the season for Paul Skeens?
07:36If so, he struck out nine over six solid innings in a win Monday, 3-2 to victory as the Pirates
07:43beat the Marlins.
07:44The AL East race is heating up.
07:46The Yankees beat the Royals.
07:48The Orioles lost to the Red Sox.
07:50So now the Yankees are up by a game and a half.
07:53In the NL wildcard race, the Mets win again.
07:55They beat the Jays 3-2 and the Braves were shut out yet again yesterday.
08:00This time to the Cincinnati Reds.
08:02The final was one to nothing there.
08:04And also the Texas Rangers make an announcement, although they are on the brink of being sort
08:09of in the postseason race, they're pushing forward.
08:11Kumar Rocker will be recalled and he will make his first start of the season as a rookie
08:16for the Texas Rangers.
08:18Welcome back to Newswire here on Sports Crib.
08:20Time to be joined now by Sam McQuillan of Legal Sports Report.
08:23You can read about all of the topics we discuss here on the show over at legalsportsreport.com.
08:28Sam, great to have you back here on Newswire.
08:30Thanks for coming on.
08:31Yeah, thanks for having me, Craig.
08:33All right.
08:34So let's get started here.
08:35And Sam, you know, with the beginning of college and pro football season, usually it's launch
08:39time for a lot of the different sports betting operators, but not so much in New York for
08:44ESPN Bet.
08:46You're one of the sports betting operators that we're keeping a close eye on here in
08:492024.
08:50What do you make of the process here and what's going on?
08:54Yeah, when Penn Entertainment CEO Jay Snowden addressed investors a few weeks ago, he was
09:02really gung ho about launching ESPN Bet in New York, which is obviously the biggest sports
09:08betting state.
09:09It's one of the highest taxed sports betting states as well.
09:11So it's really key for the operators there, the ones that have been there for a while,
09:15Draftkings and FanDuel, kind of have a foothold.
09:17And ESPN Bet hadn't launched when the state launched sports betting in 2022.
09:23Now they acquired a license from WinBet last December, and that was essentially moving
09:29forward their plans to launch.
09:31Snowden was really gung ho about launching before the start of football season.
09:34He said we would be in New York by college football week one, which was back in August
09:4025th, I believe, is when the first college games were played.
09:44Now fast forward, we're going into week two of the NFL season, and ESPN Bet still is not
09:49in New York.
09:50So there's a delay there.
09:52You're wondering why.
09:53I caught up with the New York State Gaming Commission.
09:56They said that they haven't reviewed Penn's license yet.
09:59Essentially, they have to review this transfer over from WinBet before they can even launch.
10:04Now, the earliest they said that could happen is September 23rd, which is about week four
10:10of the NFL season.
10:12So once that happens, then ESPN Bet theoretically would be able to launch.
10:16So it might not even happen until week four, week five, week six.
10:20We don't really know.
10:21ESPN Bet says it's still working on things.
10:23But this kind of throws a wrench in sort of the plans that they had talked about in their
10:29last earnings call.
10:30They had accounted for New York, a full football season of NFL betting in New York in their
10:35guidance in the revenue that they were telling investors they would make this year.
10:39So it's going to be interesting to see how that could possibly impact that as well.
10:43You know, like you alluded to, Craig, launching at the start of football season is really
10:47key because that's when everyone's flocking to the new apps.
10:49It's kind of when you see people's behavior or patterns start to develop.
10:53So last year, ESPN Bet launched, I think, in around like week 11, pretty late in NFL
10:59season at 17 states at once.
11:02But this time, they're only going to be launching in one state.
11:05So there's not going to be as much fanfare, not as much attention around it.
11:08It'll be really interesting to see what happens eventually in New York here.
11:12Penn stock has taken a hit because of this.
11:14I'm told by investors, they think people are kind of seeing, you know, they promised something
11:18they didn't deliver on it.
11:19So unfortunately, this is a story for Penn, which has kind of continued with them saying
11:24we're going to do this.
11:25And then it kind of, you know, delays happen.
11:27But that's kind of how things go in the sports betting world.
11:29There's a lot of hoops you need to jump through, a lot of, you know, approvals you need to
11:34get from different parties.
11:35It's not just as easy as buying the license.
11:38I'm really interested to see and what it looks like when they launch in New York eventually
11:42with all the promos, things of that nature.
11:44They've said they're going to rely more on the ESPN branding, more on the app updates
11:49and integrations that they've talked about as well, that we still are wondering when
11:52that's going to come.
11:53So when they launch in New York, maybe you'll see less promos, maybe you'll see more advertisements.
11:58But for now, we're just kind of waiting to see when that's going to happen.
12:01And the earliest it can happen is September 24th.
12:05So we're just going to have to wait till then.
12:07Yeah.
12:08And a lot of time for the NFL season doesn't have to be right away, but getting a head
12:10start is, you know, obviously the key to some of this with getting people, brand new people
12:15betting on the apps.
12:16All right.
12:17Speaking of apps, DraftKings has had an interesting summer initially announcing that they were
12:21going to raise the juice on a lot of sports betting by basically saying, we're not raising
12:26the juice.
12:27We're just going to take money out of your winnings.
12:28What the heck?
12:29That backfired in a big way.
12:31They walked it all back.
12:33Stock went down.
12:34But now all of a sudden we're seeing a rebound here, Sam, what do you attribute it to?
12:38Yeah, it's really been an interesting story with this whole DraftKings surcharge fiasco.
12:43It's kind of the story that never really goes away, even though it's not, it doesn't exist
12:48anymore.
12:49They had this plan to charge the fee on winning bettors for about 12 days, and then they got
12:54rid of it citing negative customer feedback.
12:56But that came after the CEO said that it would take a lot of top line deterioration, basically
13:02DraftKings losing business to get rid of the plan.
13:04So it's been a weird story.
13:07But the CEO, Jason Robbins, made some comments late last week about the surcharge, about
13:13what went into the thinking and about what they can do in the future.
13:17Essentially, they proposed the fee as a way to mitigate high taxes in a few states like
13:23Illinois, like New York, Pennsylvania, where the tax rate is about 25%.
13:28That came right after Illinois raised its tax rate, which DraftKings said it was going
13:32to impact its business by about $50 million next year.
13:36So this is essentially their way of passing it down to the better, making it up.
13:39And they said, hey, we're going to be able to give you the same promotions, same odds
13:44everywhere if we do this.
13:46Now they rescinded it, citing negative customer feedback.
13:49But Robbins said they're now exploring a new, more favorable option, which will allow them
13:54to mitigate these high taxes and to give customers a really good experience.
13:58So that's raising my eyebrows.
14:00I'm wondering what exactly you're going to do if you're not going to charge a fee on
14:03winning bettors.
14:04A lot of people speculated, hey, maybe they'll change the odds in different states.
14:08Maybe they'll make the pricing different.
14:10That certainly would not be as transparent on the front end.
14:13You wouldn't be seeing a fee coming out of your bet before you place it.
14:17You would just see worse odds and really have no way to compare it unless you're looking
14:21at other sportsbooks or other states.
14:24We haven't seen sportsbooks do that yet.
14:25It's something they've really threatened.
14:27The Sports Betting Alliance, which lobbied very hard against the Illinois tax hike, was
14:33talking about, hey, this is going to drive people to the black market.
14:36We're going to make odds worse on legal sportsbooks.
14:39We haven't seen that yet.
14:40So that's not quite off the table.
14:42Robbins didn't specify that's what they're going to do.
14:45FanDuel has come out and said, we're not going to do anything like that.
14:47So it'll be interesting to see how this develops throughout the season and interesting to see
14:51how it develops if more states consider tax hikes of their own.
14:55Does that force DraftKings to try to come up with another solution?
14:59Robbins seemed pretty proud of the way they handled it.
15:02He said it was very deliberate.
15:03We tested something.
15:04We tried it.
15:05We got negative customer feedback.
15:07We never actually went through with the fee.
15:08So no harm, no foul.
15:11That's not exactly lining up with the comments he made before they started it.
15:14So it's still a little strange that we even had this to begin with.
15:18But largely, the impact on the stock on the company has been forgotten.
15:22DraftKings is back up to about $36 a share, which is about what it was three or four months
15:27ago before it really took a nosedive after this whole surcharge plan we've seen throughout
15:32football season.
15:33The stock does really well in the first couple of weeks.
15:35So I'd expect that to kind of be the same story here, especially as Wall Street says,
15:39you know, they never actually did this.
15:41So it's just a weird kind of thing that happened and we're trying to move on from.
15:45But I'm not going to forget about it.
15:46We're going to see what they come up with in the future.
15:48It sounds like they're certainly not done with mitigating this whole high tax burden.
15:53Nope, they don't like it.
15:55And I don't think it's going away.
15:56Neither is the story.
15:57Sam, thanks again for coming on Newswire.
15:59Really appreciate it.
16:00Yep, absolutely.
16:01Thanks a lot, Craig.
16:02All right.
16:03If you bet on the Jets in New York last night, you were not a winner.
16:06They lost to the San Francisco Giants.
16:08Did not cover the spread.
16:09Did not come close.
16:1032 to 19 was the final yesterday as the Jets pick up the win on Monday Night Football.
16:15After the game yesterday, Aaron Rodgers certainly expressing his disappointment and essentially
16:21just saying we did not play well.
16:23Yeah, you know, we were just bad on first and second down, I think, for a lot of the
16:28game.
16:29And then, you know, we had a couple of drives.
16:31We converted third downs.
16:32But overall, you know, I feel like we didn't have any third and ten pluses tonight.
16:38So that's always a good thing.
16:39We look in the stat sheet, but we didn't convert those third and mediums.
16:43You know, we had a drop.
16:46We had a couple of penalties and a bad throw.
16:48So a lot to correct.
16:51But overall, I feel, you know, feel good about our guys.
16:54Thought the protection was really good tonight.
16:57We just were a little bit off in the run game.
17:00Couldn't get Breece going.
17:01Couldn't give him enough space.
17:02But a lot to build on.
17:06Jets Titans this week.
17:07Two teams coming off 0-1 disappointing performances.
17:11But not disappointing are the Buffalo Bills.
17:15And coming up next, Dan Fates is going to join us here on the show.
17:17We'll break down what the NFL is loving right now.
17:20They hate the story of what happened with Tyreek Hill.
17:23But the fact that it did happen and the Dolphins play again this week is going to get a lot
17:27of attention.
17:28Can they beat the Bills this week?
