00:00I'm Arif Bakri. I'm 58 years old.

00:10As a chef at home and as someone who always cooks Malaysian or Asian food,

00:17as far as I know, we can't short-cut this dish.

00:19So that's why I'm thinking of something that needs to be done

00:23to modernize this dish so that it can be easily used.

00:28Usually, when my son or my wife pounds the ingredients,

00:32the mortar makes a noise.

00:34They also make noises.

00:35It's difficult, spicy, and they're crying.

00:39So, that's why I'm thinking of doing something.

00:42We know that stone mortar is heavy.

00:44Then, we need to have a stone mortar.

00:47So, if we want to modernize it,

00:50we need to think outside the box

00:52so that we can produce something different

00:55but with the same result.

00:58So, my innovation is not necessarily to use a physical stone mortar

01:02but to take something modern,

01:05use a different process,

01:07but produce a pound of material like a stone mortar.

01:13Starting from the first prototype that I often improve,

01:20until I get something that I'm satisfied with,

01:24that has a result similar to the original stone mortar.

01:29So, in about a year, I produced the version that I have now.

01:34For the original stone mortar,

01:37we pound it using a stone mortar.

01:40But my innovation is that the stone mortar sits still,

01:43but the mortar is rotated to rotate the material.

01:47So, the pound produces the material that is similar to a pound of stone mortar.

01:54It's easy to use.

01:56We just need to put the stone mortar in.

02:04Then, we put it on the base

02:10and close the stone hole.

02:18It depends on the smoothness that we want.

02:22We can use it for a while or for a few minutes.

02:29This is the result.

02:36I use recycled materials and also easy-to-get materials from the hardware store

02:42to produce my prototype.

02:44One of the challenges I face is the materials to make the prototype.

02:48Because we know that we use food materials,

02:52we need to use safe materials to eat.

02:56So, one of the materials I use is resin.

03:00And I use resin that is categorized as food grade resin

03:05so that it's safe to pound the material.
