The first full week of January will bring colder air and a potential for snow to millions of Americans.
Transcript
00:00Well, December was kind of an upside down month. We had a lot of cold across much of the north central and northeast through the first couple of weeks of December, and then temperatures actually moderated late in the month.
00:12But we're going to go the other way into early January. Here's the second of January, Thursday morning. AccuWeather, real field temperatures here are going to be tanking into the North Dakota area there.
00:22In the teens to 20s below zero and into areas like Minneapolis, around single digits there. But the trend will be turning colder in the northeast. We're still going to have AccuWeather, real field temperatures into the teens during the coldest part of the day in the morning on Thursday.
00:38So later this week will turn colder. Once again, there will be some snow into the mountains in the northwest facing slopes of the mountains and will be a little milder into the southwest after a cooler start to the week there.
00:48So we're tracking a storm Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. This is about a week out. This one has kind of a generally west to east or west southwest to east northeast path. So it's not going to be one that digs deep and then comes up the coast necessarily.
01:03But there will be a stripe of snow and a transition zone here that may include New York City, maybe even Philadelphia with a mix of different precipitation types of rain, snow, perhaps some ice in there as well. And then areas along I-70 are likely to hold on to some snow with this one, at least through the midwest and I-80 for the northeast.
01:21Looking ahead to next week here, we have some headlines involving a lot of cold. Widespread cold returns next week here for the first complete week of 2025. Subzero temperatures in the northern plains and upper midwest. Snow and ice early in the midwest to the midatlantic. We showed you that map there.
01:35But then later in the week, there's potential for an east coast snowstorm as the cold air expands. And again, the coldest air of the season for many of us here will be experienced. We've got to keep an eye out for potential low pressure near the coast there. It would be Friday of next week that could involve some snow for parts of I-95. Details on that to come.
