Sheffield weather: Heavy rain in time for New Year's Eve celebrations

A yellow weather warning is in place for Sheffield in time for the celebrations on New Year's Eve, meaning 2025 will start with a washout.

00:00Morning Sheffield, it's Alistair from the Sheffield Star. I hope you had a nice Christmas

00:04break. I'm just coming to you with a little weather update for the celebrations on New

00:08Year's Eve and New Year's Day. As you've probably heard there is a weather warning

00:12for snow for large parts of the UK as well as a very severe weather warning for some

00:16very severe wind that might be coming. Some parts of the UK are going to see winds of

00:20up to 75 miles per hour as I understand it. The situation here in Sheffield for New Year's

00:24Eve is that we're very unlikely to receive snow, but I'm afraid if you're going out,

00:30if you're going to be celebrating that night, it's going to be pelting rain non-stop unfortunately.

00:35Starting from around 12 on New Year's Eve, rain's going to arrive in Sheffield and it's

00:42not going to go away until New Year's Day at around maybe 6pm. I'm seeing maybe 36 hours

00:49straight of rain for us in Sheffield unfortunately. And just to make it worse, the absolute worst

00:55of the rain is due to arrive in time for midnight on New Year's Eve. So coupled with some wind

01:01on New Year's Eve in the afternoon, which is going to be around the, I don't know, 50

01:05mile per hour kind of area, that should slacken off until around 40 mile per hour in time

01:08for New Year's, well New Year's, full stop with midnight. Yeah I'm afraid so. If you're

01:14going out for some celebrations or you're planning anything, I'm afraid it's going to

01:17be some pelting rain non-stop all day New Year's Eve and well into New Year's Day as

01:21well. And New Year's Day is going to be marked by things getting a lot chillier as well as

01:24things go towards the end of the day. As far as disruption goes though, yeah there is a

01:28small chance of disruption with all of that. Heavy rain and heavy winds are likely to cause

01:32disruption on roads, likely to disrupt travel in places and make getting around a bit more

01:37difficult come the day. So be prepared for a bit of a washout to begin 2025 sadly, as

01:44well as maybe some disruption to your New Year's Day, New Year's Eve plans unfortunately.

01:49So we'll bring you the update as we come. Currently very little chance of snow in Sheffield

01:53but we're getting everything else as it seems. So we'll bring you more as it happens.
