14 December - national forecast presented by Alex Deakin
Transcript
00:00Good morning to you. In some parts of the UK, the evenings have already started getting lighter,
00:06but you'll have struggled to notice that because it's only by a matter of seconds,
00:10and because it's been so very gloomy. But it is getting brighter across the south.
00:15A lot of cloud to begin with over the Midlands, East Anglia and Southern England,
00:18where it's been grey for most of the week. But that cloud is pushing away, melting away,
00:23breaking up to reveal some blue skies for much of Eastern England, South Wales,
00:28the Midlands and Southern England through the afternoon.
00:30A few showers this morning over North Wales. They'll peter out.
00:33Showers over Northern Scotland fading, but only to allow thickening cloud
00:37and more persistent rain to come in by the end of the day over the Highlands,
00:40the Western Isles, the Northern Isles and the west of Northern Ireland.
00:43The wind's picking up here too. The wind's not too noticeable elsewhere,
00:48quite blustery in some spots this morning, but generally easing,
00:51and with a bit of sunshine, temperatures still actually a touch below average,
00:55six or seven Celsius in the east. But because it's been so gloomy,
00:58I suspect a bit of sunshine today will alter the feel and make it feel a bit warmer
01:02than it has done. Further west, temperatures eight, nine degrees Celsius,
01:05and actually it's going to turn milder as this wet weather moves in,
01:09which will bring some rain and drizzle to Belfast through the central belt
01:12during this evening, and that trickles south into parts of Northern England and Wales.
01:17So a bit of rain and drizzle here and there through the night,
01:19lasting certainly over hills and around coasts.
01:22The wind's continuing to strengthen as well, and the cloud moving in everywhere once more.
01:27Before it moves in, temperatures likely to dip away quite sharply over eastern England,
01:32so well down into single digits here. But further west,
01:36temperatures will actually rise through the night.
01:38So we start tomorrow morning in some locations in double figures.
01:41It is going to be turning milder for all then during Sunday,
01:44but we'll have lost any sunny spells from today.
01:47It is going to be a pretty grey day, many areas dry,
01:50but rain and drizzle over the hills of North Wales, of Northern England.
01:54And here, particularly over the Pennines and just to the east,
01:57some bouncy conditions as we say. The wind's getting really gusty at times.
02:01Those Trans-Pennine routes, very blustery.
02:04And as I say, to the east of the Pennines also,
02:07and getting increasingly windy over northwest Scotland.
02:09So a very gusty and blustery end to the day,
02:12and also the rain picking up here as we go through the day.
02:16But it is going to be a mild day.
02:18Temperatures double digits across the board by the afternoon.
02:2111, 12 degrees Celsius, maybe 13 if we do see any brighter skies.
02:25We do need to watch the rain in the northwest starting through Saturday,
02:29but lasting during Sunday night and Monday, and maybe even longer than that.
02:34Setting up what we call a warm convey,
02:36with the rain just feeding in on this wiggling, waving weather front.
02:41Some uncertainty about the exact position,
02:43and that will be crucial as to how much rain we see.
02:46But because the rain could last for 48 hours, maybe more in some locations,
02:50we do have a Met Office yellow warning in place,
02:53because that rain could really tot up to give a few issues,
02:56certainly by the early part of next week.
