00:00Welcome to Mojo Plays, and today we're taking a look at 10 PlayStation IPs that may never
00:15see the light of day ever again.
00:18These are different times we're living in, folks.
00:20The Sony we once cherished is no longer around.
00:32Before we begin, we publish new videos all week long, so be sure to subscribe to Mojo
00:37Plays and ring the bell to be notified about our latest videos.
00:41Jack and Daxter series Ever since the series came to a close with
00:55Jack 3 and The Lost Frontier, folks have been clamoring for a fourth Jack and Daxter game.
01:02Unbeknownst to most people, Naughty Dog has tried a handful of times to give us that fourth
01:07core game.
01:08There's just one problem, every attempt has resulted in bigger, arguably better success
01:14than the games from the earlier years.
01:16The first attempt at Jack 4 resulted in Uncharted, which saw three sequels, a spinoff on PlayStation
01:22Vita, and a feature film.
01:29The second attempt led to The Last of Us, which sold absurd amounts of copies, more
01:34than Naughty Dog had ever seen before, and even spawned an acclaimed TV series on HBO.
01:44As for the third attempt, nothing came out of it but some decent concept art.
01:49However, said concept art was not capturing the look and spirit of the original games,
01:54according to internal staff.
01:55Naughty Dog staff have expressed interest in bringing Jack and Daxter back, but with
01:59most of the original teams no longer being at the studio, and Uncharted and The Last
02:04of Us seeing continuous success, is there much room for the duo anymore?
02:14Parappa the Rapper Series
02:25For as much as we can respect the hip-hop hero, we have to admit that Parappa has had
02:29his time under the sun.
02:31It was short-lived, but Sony doesn't seem to care about him anymore, and simply hasn't
02:36since the PlayStation 2 days.
02:38Parappa the Rapper 2 came out in 2001, the original game was ported to PSP, and then
02:44we got a remaster in 2017 that was really just another port.
02:49If Parappa 3 was ever a possibility, we would have gotten it by now, or at least heard of
02:54its cancellation.
02:55Unfortunately, Japan Studio is no longer around, and Parappa's creator, Masaya Matsura, could
03:10not get his spiritual successor to his original work off the ground.
03:14At this point, it's going to take a high-ranking executive within Sony to get the company behind
03:20the idea of bringing Parappa back, which is way, way easier said than done.
03:31MotorStorm Series
03:41If you weren't too crazy about Gran Turismo back in the PS3 days, then chances are you
03:46were checking out the MotorStorm games instead.
03:49Not only was this the alternative for those wanting an arcade racer instead of a racing
03:53sim, it was also Sony's chance to compete in the off-road racing subgenre.
03:58While the series went on for five whole games before hitting dormancy just as the PS4 launched,
04:03MotorStorm's role has been rendered obsolete with the PlayStation portfolio, and it is
04:08because of Gran Turismo.
04:15Polyphony's recent titles have added some off-road racing gameplay into their recent
04:25Gran Turismo games, albeit not in a super expansive way.
04:29Still, Sony would probably point to GT7 and its sales as the reason why MotorStorm is
04:34no longer around.
04:36Who knows, maybe one of those upcoming live service endeavors will result in a MotorStorm
04:40Apocalypse 2 or Pacific Rift 2, just to differentiate itself a bit from Polyphony's blockbuster
04:46racing sim.
04:55Heavenly Sword
05:05Heavenly Sword was a truly innovative action game from the early years of the PS3, with
05:10its unique control scheme, stunning visuals, and perfect pacing.
05:14The thing that pains us the most is that, well, despite what many people will tell you,
05:20nobody bought it.
05:21Even though a sequel had already been written and planned, Sony pulled the plug on Ninja
05:26Theory and moved the project to SCE Studio Cambridge.
05:30Ultimately, the sequel was canned in 2008.
05:38According to co-director Tameem Antoniades, Heavenly Sword sold 1.5 million copies, yet
05:45failed to break even.
05:47In Antoniades' own words, quote, that's still not enough as an independent studio
05:52to break even, ellipses.
05:54The publisher potentially breaks even at that point, but the developers don't, end quote.
05:59Sony did briefly resurrect Heavenly Sword in 2014 as an animated movie, for some reason,
06:06but it ultimately failed as well.
06:08Some of us may hold Noriko in a high regard, but Sony's numbers will always say different.
06:21Sly Cooper Series
06:34While Ratchet and Clank continue to get sequels and Jak and Daxter wallow and fade into obscurity,
06:39what about the other third of the PlayStation 2 mascots?
06:42Well, there was a moment where Sony seemed to want to continue Sly Cooper, despite the
06:47controversial Thieves in Time.
06:49In January 2014, Rainmaker dropped a teaser trailer for a Sly Cooper movie, with a release
06:56window scheduled for 2016.
06:58Alas, 2016 came and went with no word about the movie's fate.
07:03Then in 2017, Sony announced a Sly Cooper TV show that would premiere in 2019, and again,
07:12nothing has been said of the project since.
07:23And then, random rumors started cropping up in 2022 regarding Sucker Punch working on
07:28a brand new game in the series, which the developer quickly shot down.
07:33Not only that, they flat out stated, quote,
07:36We have no plans to revisit Infamous or Sly Cooper right now, and no other studio is currently
07:42working on projects related to those franchises either, end quote.
07:47Sucker Punch is currently working on Ghost of Yotei, the long-awaited follow-up to 2020's
07:51Ghost of Tsushima.
07:53Sucker Punch also stated, quote,
07:55We'd never say never to reopening those doors, end quote, although we aren't holding
07:59our breaths to see our favorite ring-tailed thief again.
08:02We may just get PS4 and PS5 ports, and that'll be it.
08:06What Dimitri plans to do with the clockwork part is beyond me.
08:10Those plans end tonight.
08:14Infamous Series
08:26Before we move on from Sucker Punch, you probably noticed Infamous was caught in the rumor with
08:30Sly.
08:31Fans have been begging for Sony and Sucker Punch to bring the first two Infamous games
08:34to PS5, if not a new entry.
08:37Indeed, the first two games were ahead of their times when it came to mechanics, animation,
08:43and physics engines.
08:44Seriously, if you go back and play these games, they're running at like 10 frames per second.
08:49Alas, not every studio wants to be the studio known for one game, and with their pedigree,
08:55Sony is going to let Sucker Punch do whatever they want, and whatever they believe works
09:01best for them.
09:08If that means moving on from Infamous, then yeah, Sucker Punch may never revisit Cole,
09:16Delson, or Fetch ever again.
09:18Who knows, maybe PlayStation Productions can spice up the superhero movie scene with an
09:22adaptation of Cole's first game.
09:25That, or compete as a TV series against the boys, with like, I don't know, The Conduits.
09:31I'd watch that.
09:38Resistance series.
09:53Another underrated PS3 series we'd love to see again is Resistance.
09:57Of the FPS games many folks deem as the piss-filter era, Resistance was one of the more unique
10:03titles in terms of visuals and weaponry.
10:06This was a series that got progressively darker in tone in how much the cast struggled
10:10in their fight against the Chimera.
10:12It was a different, yet captivating side of Insomniac we hadn't seen before, but Insomniac
10:18is ultimately the Grim Reaper of this IP because of one big brand.
10:24Marvel.
10:27As revealed in the 2023 Insomniac leak, the studio has its plate full for the next decade,
10:38working almost exclusively on Marvel-licensed games.
10:42There is a planned Ratchet & Clank game in between all of that, but it isn't scheduled
10:46for release until 2029.
10:48If you love Spider-Man and X-Men, you might love this direction Insomniac is heading,
10:53but for those of us wanting a simple PS5 port of the Resistance games, well, it'll
10:58be a miracle for that to happen at this point, especially when the series didn't exactly
11:02push units.
11:14Killzone series.
11:24Killzone was another unique FPS series Sony had under its belt, and it was the series
11:28that would show the potential Guerrilla Games had prior to making Horizon.
11:33Even Sony got behind the series, as it once deemed it the Halo killer.
11:38As we've seen in the past decades, Killzone never really got off the ground.
11:42Hardcore PS3 fans liked it, but in a world where everyone was obsessing over Call of
11:46Duty more than any other shooter in the late 2000s, Killzone just did not stand a chance.
11:54Even in 2013, when Killzone Shadow Fall released alongside the PS4, folks still didn't show
12:06up to champion the IP.
12:08It was a commercial success, yes, but Horizon Zero Dawn changed Guerrilla Games' trajectory.
12:13Since 2017, Guerrilla and Sony have stuck with Horizon and have been going hard on sequels,
12:20spin-offs, and remasters left and right.
12:23In 2024, Guerrilla Games even stated themselves that they have moved on from Killzone and
12:28have no desire to go back.
12:30Guess we're just never getting that Killzone collection, huh?
12:41Little Big Planet series.
12:51This one admittedly hurts to tread.
12:54For a time, Sackboy was considered the mascot of PlayStation.
12:58He was a character that was malleable to put in so many different games and was often the
13:03choice guest character for third-party games like 3D Dot Game Heroes and Minecraft.
13:09On top of that, Little Big Planet was a valuable IP for Sony throughout the PS3 era and during
13:15some of the early PS4 years.
13:17However, after LBP3, Sony kind of stopped seeking Sackboy-related projects.
13:33Sure, we got Sackboy a big adventure in 2020 when the PS5 launched, but you know what character
13:39people latched onto at that time?
13:42It was Astro Bot.
13:43Since Astro's Playroom, all folks can think about is that game and Astro Bot, so much
13:50so that we finally got a standalone Astro Bot game in 2024.
13:55The game does feature a rescuable Sackboy bot, but with Astro seeing such resounding
14:01success, more than any ounce of success Sackboy ever saw, well, that Toy Story meme perfectly
14:08encapsulates the whole situation.
14:11R.I.P. and Peace, Sackboy.
14:17EverQuest Series
14:26In the case of EverQuest, this is the most glaring and confusing omission in PlayStation's
14:32portfolio.
14:33Once upon a time, EverQuest was one of the biggest and most popular MMORPGs on the market,
14:39and while the first game was only ever released on PC, the IP found a home on PS2 with Champions
14:45of Norrath, which even saw a sequel in 2007 with Champions Return to Arms.
14:59Though Sony has never given hard numbers on sales, EverQuest is still available today
15:04on PC and has an active player base of more than 80,000 players.
15:09So, why not invest in trying to bring EverQuest to console and further grow that player base?
15:17Or, why not remake, remaster, or port Champions of Norrath for old players to revisit and
15:24new players to discover?
15:26And considering Sony's ambition to break into the live service market, you would think
15:30EverQuest would be a key player in those plans.
15:34And yet, Sony seems to have no interest in expanding this IP anymore.
15:40It's baffling.
15:50But tell me, which of these PlayStation franchises would you love to see return in some way?
15:54I am definitely pushing for EverQuest, if you cannot tell.
15:58I've talked about Champions of Norrath so many times, it's maddening that Sony continues
16:03to ignore this game.
16:04But, aside from my own madness, let me know down in the comments below what franchises
16:09you want to see return and be sure to subscribe to Mojo Plays for more great videos every
16:14day.
16:28Thanks for watching.
