00:00Welcome to Mojo Plays and today we're taking a look at the 10 biggest financial failures
00:12PlayStation has ever seen.
00:18Before we begin, we publish new videos all week long, so be sure to subscribe to Mojo
00:22Plays and ring the bell to be notified about our latest videos.
00:26The Order 1886 To this day, there are some who swear that
00:36The Order 1886 had loads of potential to become Sony's next greatest IP, and in some
00:42regard, it did.
00:43We don't exactly get a lot of games that blend steampunk with gothic horror.
00:47Despite its unique theme and gunplay, The Order fell victim to its own marketing hype
00:52and ultimate mediocrity.
00:54Marketing critics began the bad word of mouth about how the game was only a few hours long
00:59and abruptly ends just when the story got interesting.
01:02It didn't help that the entire game was trapped in that annoying widescreen support
01:06just to replicate that cinematic feeling, when in reality, the black bars only made
01:11combat cumbersome.
01:13Since launch, Sony has not said a word about The Order's sales and cut their ties with
01:18Ready at Dawn soon after, despite the devs' desires to continue with a sequel.
01:23Ready at Dawn would be acquired by Oculus Studios in 2020, only to be shut down in 2024.
01:33Knack 2 Many mistake the success of the first Knack
01:41game as a measurement of the game's quality.
01:43Look, if you were 10 years old in 2013, then sure, MAYBE you were obsessed with this game
01:49despite the uninteresting story and basic-as-hell combat.
01:53But the main reason Knack sold as many copies as it did was for two reasons.
01:57First, the game was bundled with the PS4 for a time.
02:01Second, many PS4 owners picked up this game because there were only three or four big
02:05games that launched with the console, so there wasn't really anything to play.
02:11That said, what exactly warranted a second Knack game in 2017?
02:16To its credit, Knack 2 did improve on some aspects, mostly in expanding the combat, but
02:21in a year where we got Horizon Zero Dawn, Persona 5, Nier Automata, and Crash Bandicoot
02:28Insane Trilogy on PS4, who was looking at Knack 2 and thinking, I NEED to play that?
02:35Well, according to sales data, Knack 2 didn't even chart for the week or the month it came
02:40out.
02:41And if trophy data is anything to go off of, not even half of the playerbase have beaten
02:45the first boss.
02:51Rogue Galaxy
02:57Poor Rogue Galaxy has long been the child everyone pretends to love, only to continue
03:02being neglected.
03:03While its story wasn't one of the best we had experienced on the PlayStation 2, just
03:08about everything else—combat, visuals, music, controls, etc.—was absolutely stellar.
03:14At least that's what the few people who played it would tell you.
03:17Rogue Galaxy was one of PlayStation's biggest bombs in the company's history.
03:21After a little over a year on the market, the RPG only managed to sell a little over
03:25300,000 copies.
03:27Even after a digital re-release on PS4, the game continues to be one of the worst-selling
03:31games Sony has ever invested in.
03:42Drawn to Death
03:44We'll try to morph you deep in the nether regions, truth be told.
03:48Bullets!
03:50After middling commercial success in 2012's Twisted Metal, series co-creator David Jaffe
03:55left Eat Sleep Play to go and form the Bartlett Jones Supernatural Detective Agency.
04:00The convolutedly titled studio's first game?
04:03An arena shooter that took place inside the composition notebook of an angsty teenager.
04:08Drawn to Death truly had some compelling ideas in place between the crazy and imaginative
04:12weaponry and the way the game told its story through PlayStation trophies.
04:16Unfortunately, critics weren't too pleased with the game's sense of humor, which many
04:21outlets described its profane nature as juvenile and immature.
04:25Drawn to Death only ever got to be a blip on the radar for most, while hardcore fans
04:29of Jaffe stuck with the game a lot longer.
04:32Enough for Sony to give the game two years before pulling its plug in March 2019.
04:43Concrete Genie
04:50At least Sony gave Drawn to Death a fair chance at bouncing back.
04:54Concrete Genie was practically sent out to die.
04:57There was truly something special about Concrete Genie, with its focus on player creativity
05:02and incorporating painting into an open-world format.
05:05So what about this game was so horrible that it became such a massive flop?
05:10Well, it wasn't anything to do with the game itself, but rather what Sony did.
05:15On the same day that Concrete Genie launched, Sony dropped the first massive bits of news
05:21regarding the PlayStation 5 via an interview with Wired.
05:25Because of this, Concrete Genie and developer Pixelopus got whatever scraps of media and
05:30public attention remained, which was very, very, very little.
05:35And if the game made any money at all, we doubt it was enough to deem it marginal.
05:44Killstrain
05:50Of all the games you'll see on this list, none made such a comically small amount of
05:55revenue as Killstrain.
05:57Not even the game that you know we'll be talking about soon, but hold your horses.
06:02Developed by San Diego Studio, the same one behind MLB The Show, Killstrain was a chaotic
06:08mess of a twin-stick shooter where two teams of five players fought against each other
06:12while also fending off a third faction born from a zombie virus.
06:16That's really the best way we can describe it.
06:19To no one's surprise, Killstrain was dead on arrival.
06:23Matchmaking times were abysmal even at launch because not even the few that cared to play
06:27the game could understand what they were supposed to be doing.
06:30According to leaked sales data from the 2023 Insomniac Leak, Killstrain was only downloaded
06:35by less than 600 players.
06:38In terms of finances, the game only made a whopping $1,565.
06:45The real kicker?
06:47Killstrain was only ever released digitally.
06:49Yep, the game only made about a month's worth of rent.
06:57Destruction All-Stars
07:00Say what you will about the PS5 generation, but Destruction All-Stars was probably the
07:11first red flag in what was about to be a second era of arrogant Sony.
07:16It was bad enough that the mere existence of Destruction All-Stars peeved long-time
07:20PlayStation fans, specifically us Twisted Metal fans.
07:23Because, you know, Sony already has a vehicular combat game and we've been begging for a
07:27new entry for years at this point.
07:29Nevertheless, sure, why not have a new vehicular combat IP centered around online multiplayer
07:35that is not Twisted Metal?
07:36And let's give it a zany tone in its characters and art style, just like Fortnite does for
07:41its characters.
07:42And how about we lock not just cosmetics behind a paywall, but the single-player campaigns
07:47as well?
07:48Players will still cop up their hard-earned $70 for a game like this, and that's the
07:51story of how Destruction All-Stars failed to garner a player base and turned its servers
07:56into barren deserts of bots.
07:58Good luck finding a match these days.
08:05PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale
08:12Die-hard fans will insist that PlayStation All-Stars was a resounding success, but just
08:16because a game sold a million copies does not mean it surpassed all expectations.
08:21Unfortunately, PlayStation All-Stars most likely did not meet its intended marks, and
08:26the confirmation for that comes straight from long-time PlayStation head Shuhei Yoshida.
08:31In 2013, Yoshida stated that the game did reach one million units sold, only to state
08:37that the sales numbers were not enough for Sony to want to continue DLC support, let
08:41alone invest in a sequel.
08:44PlayStation All-Stars had its third DLC pack canceled shortly before Yoshida's remarks,
08:49and developer Superbot Entertainment went defunct in 2014 while in the middle of developing
08:54their second game.
08:57Lair
09:07Lair might be the sole reason why we haven't gotten many Dragon Riding games, or any for
09:12that matter.
09:13However, Lair's dismal failure is mostly Sony's fault.
09:17During its development, Lair had already cost Sony a lot of money for Factor 5 to develop
09:22on account of the PS3's troublesome hardware.
09:25What made the whole project more tumultuous was when Sony demanded Factor 5 to incorporate
09:296-axis controls into the game, most likely as a response to the growing fervor around
09:34the motion control-based Nintendo Wii at the time.
09:37What resulted was a game that made our Dragon Riding fantasy absolutely infuriating due
09:42to the general inaccuracy of the PS3's 6-axis functionality.
09:46Lair went down in flames as one of the worst games to ever grace the PlayStation 3, and
09:51And while some swear the controls did improve later on, most were not willing to give the
09:56game a second chance.
09:57With Sony severing ties with them, Factor 5 struggled to secure funding from other publishers
10:02after this, and even found itself embroiled in legal troubles regarding employment pay
10:07until the higher-ups closed the studio's doors in 2009.
10:12Concord
10:16Sony's pivot to live service has perhaps been the most contentious move the company
10:25has ever made, at least on the PlayStation side of things, and from the fans' perspectives.
10:30As for Concord, this was a product that left so many people befuddled.
10:35From the first bit of gameplay we saw in May 2024, folks immediately noticed how archaic
10:40Concord was in approach, design, visuals, everything.
10:45This was a hero shooter launching in 2024, with game modes that were basically just Team
10:50Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, and Call of Duty's Kill Confirm mode, not to mention
10:55King of the Hill and Control Point.
10:57Movement and gunplay just did not feel great for most of the roster either, and what was
11:02more confusing was the character design.
11:05Considering Sony acquired developer Firewalk Studios in 2023, long before Concord was released,
11:11one has to wonder, what exactly did Sony see in the team, or what did they see in Concord
11:17that justified the acquisition?
11:20And now here we are, Concord is no more, didn't even last two weeks before it was pulled from
11:25the market.
11:26But be honest, did you wind up buying Concord or any of these other flops when they came
11:34out?
11:35No shame if you did, but let us know down in the comments and be sure to subscribe to
