Transcript
00:00Then I see all my hands, the skin pale.
00:03Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're looking at 50 times that an actor's on-set injury made it into a movie or TV show.
00:10I mean, Viggo actually, feeling that pain, he actually turned that into performance.
00:16Number 50. William Campbell, Star Trek.
00:19Since the creation of the franchise in 1966, Star Trek has featured actors performing all kinds of intense stunts.
00:25And on occasion, these feats result in a universe of pain.
00:30Take the original series' 17th episode as an example.
00:33In The Squire of Gothos, guest star William Campbell, who played General Trelane, dislocated his shoulder as he sparred with William Shatner in the forest.
00:50Although Campbell managed to pop it back into place by instinctively flinging his arm,
00:54the incident caused production to go a day over schedule.
00:57If you watch closely, you can see Campbell slightly favoring his good arm during the brawl.
01:12Portrayed by the glamorous Melina Canacarides, crime scene investigator Stella Bonacera is a badass.
01:18Stella works alongside Detective Mac Taylor, played by Gary Sinise, serving as the assistant supervisor of the NYPD crime lab.
01:25During her time in this role, Stella protected the city with impeccable stealth and poise.
01:30Most of the time.
01:38Season 5's opener Veritas finds Stella and her team embroiled in a conflict with a killer named Ethan Scott.
01:44A chase ensues between Stella and Scott on a fire escape,
01:47during which the former trips and gets a very real scar on her left leg.
01:51Number 48. John LeMessurer, Dad's Army.
02:02If you're unfamiliar with this classic sitcom, Dad's Army is bursting with good old-fashioned British humor.
02:08Set in World War II, the show follows the adventures of English home guard volunteers,
02:13most of whom are too old or otherwise unqualified to join the regular army.
02:17Many of the laughs come from the inept group attempting to execute strenuous military exercises.
02:23When Season 3 rolled around, these efforts proved to be too much for John LeMessurer,
02:27who played Sergeant Arthur Wilson.
02:29Uncle Arthur?
02:30Oh, what is it, Frank?
02:31I'm ever so cold.
02:33What?
02:34Can I cuddle up to you?
02:37The 57-year-old actor strained a ligament in his leg as he threw himself onto the ground in one episode.
02:42All right, then. Not too close.
02:47Number 47. Sylvester McCoy, Doctor Who
02:50Whovians know Sylvester McCoy as the whimsical and mysterious Seventh Doctor.
02:55Notably, McCoy's incarnation of the famous Time Lord was the last to appear before the series went on hiatus in 1989.
03:02The Season 26 finale, titled Survival, also marked the only time McCoy's Doctor came face-to-face with Anthony Ainley's master.
03:10Although Ainley and McCoy starred as iconic mortal enemies, they had one thing in common.
03:15Their hatred of the contact lenses they had to wear in this final serial.
03:19Both found the lenses to be extremely uncomfortable, and it's visible if you watch closely.
03:24Welcome to my new home, Doctor.
03:29It didn't help that Ainley had to hit McCoy with a giant animal bone,
03:33though McCoy was so irritated by the contact that he barely noticed.
03:37I've got to stop. We've got to go.
03:39We can't go. Not this time.
03:41Yes, we can!
03:43Escape to what?
03:44I don't choose to live as an animal.
03:46If we fight, we'll destroy this planet.
03:49Number 46. K.J. Appa, Riverdale
03:52Debuting in 2017, this popular show presents a darker, more dramatic version of the beloved comic series than previously seen.
04:00K.J. Appa stars as Archie Andrews, who goes from everyday teenager to hero at the end of season one.
04:06A scene in the finale finds Archie and his friends venturing to save their classmate when she falls through thin ice.
04:12Are you careful?
04:13Help!
04:15Although Appa was actually punching a foam mat, he hit it with so much gusto that he actually broke his hand.
04:21What's more, it was so cold on set that he didn't even notice the injury until 20 minutes after it occurred.
04:27Number 45. Aaron Paul, Breaking Bad
04:35As methamphetamine cook and dealer Jesse Pinkman, Aaron Paul filmed his share of fight scenes.
04:40But a slip that occurred behind the scenes of season two, episode two, stands out as especially harrowing.
04:46Here, Paul suffered a concussion when Raymond Cruz, in character as Tuco Salamanca, pushed him into a screen door.
04:52Immediately feeling the effects of the tumble, Paul begged Cruz to stop, but Cruz simply thought his cries for help were part of the script and continued to beat the crap out of him.
05:05Real-life mistakes aside, you have to admit the final take looks pretty authentic.
05:10Number 44. Marina Sirtis, Star Trek The Next Generation
05:16Sirtis' depiction of counselor Deanna Troi earned her considerable fame, and for a time, considerable pain.
05:23In season five's Power Play, Troi is part of an away team that explores an uninhabited moon.
05:29When told there was a stunt that involved the crew being violently thrown backwards, Sirtis had the option to use a double, as all her fellow actors were doing.
05:36She opted to do the stunt, and although they were able to get a great shot, it came at a hefty price.
05:43Sirtis hurt her tailbone while crashing to the ground.
05:53In Sirtis' view, the worst part of this was that no one could see her face from that distance anyway, so no one would have known it was her rather than a double.
06:01When no one would have known, you know, it was me, so all that, it was all for nothing.
06:05Number 43. Andrew Sachs, Fawlty Towers
06:08Fawlty Towers is celebrated for its sharp writing and hilarious physical comedy.
06:13The sitcom also features performances from British comedy legends, such as John Cleese and Andrew Sachs.
06:19Sachs' portrayal of waiter Manuel earned him lots of love from his audience,
06:23but unfortunately, he was injured a few times while recording the show's humorous mishaps.
06:27In addition to the time he was accidentally set on fire, Sachs once found himself on the receiving end of a so-called staged hit on the head
06:43with an unexpectedly real frying pan.
06:46Talk about devotion to the craft.
06:47John Snow is among the most famous players in the Game of Thrones,
07:01and Kit Harington has been widely praised for giving life to the heroic Snow.
07:05And according to the behind-the-scenes info for the episode Winterfell,
07:09it sounds like Harington suffered for his art big time.
07:11To film a sequence where Snow rides a dragon,
07:20Harington had to sit on a mechanical bull-like device that bucked around crazily.
07:24At one point, it grabbed hold of him in a particularly vulnerable spot,
07:28causing poor Kit significant discomfort and fear.
07:31Being the seasoned professional he is, he's soldiered through the scene.
07:41But if you watch very closely, you can see him grimacing.
07:45Number 41. Matt LeBlanc, Friends
07:47Joey Tribbiani is a fan-favorite character on Friends.
07:51What he lacks in intelligence, he makes up for in loyalty and lovability.
07:55That's why we felt so badly for his actor, Matt LeBlanc,
07:58in season three's The One Where No One's Ready.
08:00A subplot of this episode involves Joey and his roommate Chandler
08:04fighting over a chair in their neighbor Monica's apartment.
08:07At a moment where they both make a mad dash for the spot,
08:10Matt LeBlanc dislocated his shoulder.
08:15The writers were able to cleverly incorporate the accident into the show,
08:19having Joey, in typical Joey fashion, get hurt while jumping on his bed.
08:23See, Joe, that's why your parents told you not to jump on the bed.
08:27Number 40. Sylvester Stallone, Rocky III
08:32This franchise went places in the 1980s.
08:41Rocky was a grounded movie about underdogs, ambition, and the gritty streets of 1970s Philly.
08:47By Rocky III, he was wrestling Hulk Hogan.
08:50In one of the movie's signature scenes, Rocky and Thunderlips fight in a charity event,
08:54but the wrestler takes it a little too seriously and batters Rocky like a ragdoll.
08:58Turns out this is pretty much what actually happened.
09:01Hogan reportedly wrestled Stallone for real,
09:03throwing him around the ring and leaving him with numerous bruises.
09:06Stallone has also recounted an incident where a particular move was so painful
09:10that he believed Hogan had broken his collarbone.
09:12Luckily, nothing of the sort had happened.
09:15Oh my god!
09:18Balboa is really in pain.
09:20No one can believe the superhuman strength!
09:23Up Thunderlips!
09:25Number 39. Johnny Knoxville, Action Point
09:28We'll let seven parts be about what you can't do.
09:31Action Point is gonna be about what you can do.
09:33Yeah!
09:34Okay.
09:35So what are you going to do?
09:37We're gonna take the brakes off this place.
09:39This is basically the fifth Jackass movie with a story wrapped around it.
09:42Naturally, there are a ton of gnarly stunts.
09:45It is loosely based on Action Park,
09:48a shoddy New Jersey theme park known for its lack of safety features
09:51and extreme number of accidents.
09:53Johnny Knoxville performed all of his own stunts,
09:55resulting in four concussions, lost teeth, a torn meniscus, and a broken hand.
10:00Just to name a few injuries.
10:02In the movie's most famous stunt,
10:03Knoxville shoots off the alpine slide and lands directly on his face,
10:07which resulted in a horrible eye injury.
10:10Following this, he was not allowed to sneeze
10:12or blow his nose for six weeks for fear of the pressure causing further damage.
10:16I went back to the emergency room.
10:18They told me I had a blowout fracture.
10:21Apparently, when I hit my face into the ground on the stunt,
10:25the orbital lamina bone didn't break.
10:28It just disappeared.
10:29Number 38, Bruce Willis, Die Hard.
10:31No more table.
10:33Where are you going, pal?
10:34Next time you have a chance to kill someone, don't hesitate.
10:40Undeniably one of the best action films ever made,
10:43Die Hard is full of wonderful set pieces and awe-inspiring stunts.
10:47And weirdly enough, it wasn't a death-defying act that caused permanent injury,
10:51but the simple act of shooting a prop gun.
10:54A scene occurs in which John McClane is hiding under a boardroom table
10:57and kills a terrorist by shooting up through the wood.
11:00Bruce Willis was tasked with doing this himself,
11:02and he shot a number of blank cartridges very close to his face.
11:06Even though there is no bullet, blanks are still incredibly loud,
11:09and Willis lost two-thirds of the hearing in his left ear as a result.
11:14Thanks for the advice.
11:15Number 37, Chevy Chase, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.
11:19Remember, don't try this at home, kids.
11:20I am a professional.
11:25Later, dudes.
11:27A perennial holiday classic, everyone knows this movie by heart.
11:31But did you know that Chevy Chase broke his finger in one of the scenes?
11:35No, it wasn't when Clark fell off the roof
11:37or broke the sound barrier while sledding.
11:39It was when he had a tantrum about the lights.
11:41After spending countless hours setting up his winter wonderland,
11:44Clark's Christmas lights won't turn on,
11:46so he freaks out and begins destroying some decorations.
11:49At one point, he punches a Santa,
11:52and it's here that Chase reportedly broke his pinky finger.
11:55You can even see that Clark switches to kicks after the initial punch,
11:58likely because Chase was in so much pain.
12:00The house lights don't work.
12:02The floodlights don't work.
12:06Is it plugged in?
12:08Honey, do you honestly think I would check thousands of tiny little lights
12:11if I wasn't sure the extension cord was plugged in?
12:13If I have any more fun today, I don't think I'm going to be able to take it.
12:24Made for as little as $80,000,
12:26the budget of the first Texas Chainsaw Massacre was quite limited,
12:30so the visual effects team had to do a lot of improvising.
12:33And by improvising, we mean just doing it for real.
12:36In the climactic dinner sequence,
12:38Leatherface cuts Sally's finger and draws blood for Grandpa.
12:41The filmmakers tried achieving this effect with fake blood and a tube,
12:44but the contraption wasn't cooperating,
12:46so they just got rid of the contraption.
12:49Instead, Marilyn Burns allowed her finger to be sliced for real.
12:53Looking at the scene now,
12:54it's quite obvious that her finger was actually cut,
12:57and we cannot help but wince.
12:59Being James Bond comes with a high degree of danger,
13:15and as it turns out, so does playing him.
13:17In the climax of The Spy Who Loved Me,
13:19bad guy Carl Stromberg tries shooting Bond through a secret tube,
13:22but he jumps out of the way just in time,
13:24and the chair he was sitting on explodes.
13:27To achieve the effect,
13:28various incendiary devices were placed inside the prop chair.
13:31However, these explosives were set off a bit prematurely,
13:35igniting Moore's bum on fire.
13:37As he told BBC5 Live,
13:39quote,
13:39flames were coming out of my rear end.
13:41I ended up with three holes where most people have won.
13:44At least he has a good sense of humor about it.
13:46You shot your boat, Stromberg.
13:49Now it's my turn.
13:50Number 34.
13:51Jackie Chan.
13:52Rumble in the Bronx.
13:58We could fill a whole list with Jackie Chan injuries.
14:05In fact, we did.
14:07Check it out.
14:07Rumble in the Bronx was Chan's big break in North America,
14:10and it only cost him a big break of his ankle.
14:13We apologize for that pun.
14:15Chan jumps from a bridge pier onto a nearby hovercraft,
14:18landing awkwardly on his right ankle.
14:20If you look hard enough,
14:22you can even see Chan briefly reacting in pain
14:24before the scene cuts.
14:25Chan shattered his ankle in the stunt
14:27and spent the rest of filming in a cast.
14:30Hiding said cast required a ton of creative solutions from the crew,
14:33like coloring the sock worn over his cast to resemble a shoe.
14:37Number 33.
14:48Brendan Fraser.
14:49The Mummy.
14:50His neck did not break.
14:52Brendan Fraser is a tough dude,
14:54and he has faced a number of injuries throughout his career.
14:57The most famous occurred while filming The Mummy,
15:00which not coincidentally is the one you actually see on screen.
15:03In the scene, Rick O'Connell is being executed,
15:06but is saved in the nick of time by Evelyn.
15:08According to Fraser, his acting did not look authentic,
15:12so he agreed to take it one step further
15:13and was essentially strangled for real.
15:16Rick's intense struggling is Fraser's intense struggling.
15:19And while it achieved the authenticity they were looking for,
15:22Fraser ended up passing out from a lack of oxygen.
15:25Luckily, no long-term damage was done.
15:28And the guy holding the rope above me,
15:31he pulled it up a little higher,
15:32and I was stuck on my toes.
15:33I had nowhere to go but down,
15:35and so he was pulling up and I was going down.
15:37And then the next thing I knew,
15:38my elbow was in my ear.
15:40The world was sideways,
15:41and there was gravel in my teeth,
15:42and everyone was really quiet.
15:44Number 32.
15:45Buster Keaton.
15:46Sherlock Jr.
15:47You ever break your neck and just carry on with your day?
15:50No, of course not.
15:52But Buster Keaton did.
15:53One stunt in Sherlock Jr.
15:55sees Keaton walking on a moving train,
15:57grabbing a water spout,
15:58and getting hit with the water that spills out.
16:00The water pressure was much higher than anticipated,
16:02knocking Keaton to the ground and causing his head to hit one of the steel rails.
16:07Despite the immense pain,
16:09Keaton carried on with the scene.
16:11However, in the weeks following,
16:12he reportedly suffered from horrible headaches.
16:15Fast forward 11 years to 1935,
16:18when an x-ray showed that Keaton had fractured his top vertebra on the fall.
16:22Yep, the dude was just casually strolling around with a broken neck.
16:25Number 31.
16:32Numerous Extras.
16:33Noah's Ark.
16:34In 1928,
16:36there were no safety regulations in place for actors or stunt performers.
16:40As you can imagine,
16:41this led to catastrophe.
16:43Noah's Ark is an early disaster film,
16:45and the biblical flood is depicted in the climax.
16:48This scene was very impressive for its time,
16:51but without the stunt regulations in place,
16:53it was also an unmitigated disaster.
16:55With 600,000 gallons of water pouring into the studio,
16:59a slew of extras suffered an extensive list of injuries,
17:02including many broken bones.
17:04It's reported that up to 35 ambulances were called to the studio to tend to the wounded.
17:09It was such a mess that Hollywood convened and implemented safety regulations
17:13the very next year to prevent such a thing from occurring again.
17:16Number 30.
17:24The Famous Head Bonk.
17:25Star Wars Episode IV, A New Hope.
17:28They're madmen.
17:29They're heading to the prison level.
17:30If you hurry, you might catch them.
17:31Alright, we're stretching the concept of injury a bit,
17:34but come on.
17:35This is an iconic movie mistake that needs a spot on the list.
17:38You all know the story.
17:40A group of stormtroopers is walking into a room
17:42when one of them bonks their head on the door.
17:44This was a famous gaffe in the Star Wars fandom
17:46before it became more commonplace in the early 2000s.
17:49The goof is referenced in Attack of the Clones
17:51when Jango Fett bumps his head on the door.
17:53And in the 2004 re-release,
17:55a very noticeable bonking noise was added to the scene.
18:01To this day, no one really knows who played that specific stormtrooper.
18:06But whoever they are,
18:07they are an iconic piece of movie history.
18:10Number 29.
18:11George Clooney.
18:12Siriana.
18:13And I fell over and I tore my spine, my door up in two places.
18:18You know, about an inch and a half in one
18:19and, you know, a half an inch in the other.
18:22And all the spinal fluid goes out.
18:24We go from a head bonk to a head smack
18:27and a funny goof to a horrifying injury.
18:30George Clooney earned an Oscar for his performance in Siriana,
18:32but it was a small consolation for months of physical and mental anguish.
18:36Clooney's character, Bob Barnes,
18:38is being interrogated when he falls backwards
18:39and hits his head on the floor.
18:41This bone-crunching smack was real.
18:43And according to Clooney,
18:44he, quote,
18:45immediately knew how serious it was.
18:47Your brain sinks in your head
18:50and it's attached to all these nerve endings.
18:52And it's really unbearably painful.
18:55And you have to lay down and you can't get up.
18:57And it's,
18:57I thought I had a stroke, honestly.
18:59He began suffering from debilitating headaches
19:01and checked himself into a hospital,
19:03where it was discovered that he had torn his dura
19:05and was leaking spinal fluid.
19:06The pain was so unbearable
19:08that Clooney considered taking his own life.
19:10But operations fixed the injury
19:12and the pain eventually subsided.
19:13Number 28.
19:15Ben Affleck,
19:16Dazed and Confused.
19:17Nice try, freshman.
19:19Tell you what,
19:21thanks for being such brave little kids,
19:22I'm only gonna give each of you five licks, okay?
19:24In 1993,
19:26a then-unknown Ben Affleck starred
19:28as bad guy Fred O'Banion in Dazed and Confused.
19:31Fred takes incredible glee
19:32in tormenting the younger students,
19:34but the kids get their revenge
19:35when they douse Fred in white paint.
19:37Frustrated and embarrassed,
19:38Fred throws a tantrum
19:39before climbing into his car and driving off.
19:41If you look closely,
19:43you can see Affleck roll his ankle
19:44just as he slams the bat into the ground.
19:49Damn it!
19:51Some sources claim that he merely twisted his ankle,
19:53while others say he broke it completely.
19:56Whatever the case,
19:56it sure looks nasty.
19:58And we have to commend him
19:59for keeping the scene going.
20:01Number 27.
20:02PJ Souls,
20:03Carrie.
20:04Wipe that smirk off your face, Norma.
20:06Brian De Palma's Carrie has one of the most famous
20:11and terrifying climaxes in horror movie history.
20:13Carrie White finally snaps
20:15after a continued string of abuse and torment,
20:18causing her to go on a deadly rampage.
20:20During the infamous prom sequence,
20:22Norma is blasted directly in the face by a fire hose.
20:25A fire chief who was on set
20:27warned De Palma against the stunt,
20:29telling him that it was incredibly dangerous.
20:31They went through with it anyway,
20:32and it cost PJ Souls an eardrum.
20:35The stream of water clearly hit Souls in the ear,
20:38and she reportedly blacked out from the pain.
20:44After a visit to the emergency department,
20:47she was told that her eardrum had been ruptured.
20:50Number 26.
20:51Gianni Russo,
20:52The Godfather.
20:55James Caan's Sonny Corleone
20:57is arguably the most brash and violent character
21:00in The Godfather.
21:00And when he learns that his brother-in-law
21:03has been abusive towards Connie,
21:04he makes a rather chaotic visit
21:06to sort the problem out.
21:07Gianni Russo claims that he and Caan
21:09did not get along while filming,
21:11which may have led to Caan being a little more
21:13forceful than he would have liked.
21:15While filming the fight sequence,
21:17Caan actually made contact on more than one occasion,
21:19chipping Russo's elbow and breaking two of his ribs.
21:22In Russo's own words,
21:24quote,
21:24Jimmy got a little aggressive.
21:26I look pretty painful.
21:28It's called committing to the part.
21:30Number 25.
21:31Robert Mitchum,
21:32Cape Fear.
21:33Hello, Counselor.
21:34Remember me?
21:36Baltimore.
21:37Eight years,
21:38four months,
21:39and 13 days ago.
21:40Both The Godfather and Cape Fear
21:42prove that faking fights is not so easy.
21:45In this classic 60s thriller,
21:47Max Cady is released from prison
21:48and begins stalking the lawyer
21:50who helped put him away.
21:51During the climax of the film,
21:53both men fight on a riverbank,
21:54and this fight was actually performed
21:56by actors Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum.
21:59While filming the fight,
22:00Peck accidentally hit Mitchum for real,
22:02but the actor never let on
22:03and continued the scene without incident.
22:06Luckily, Mitchum was not seriously hurt,
22:08but he claimed that it was a very painful hit
22:10that left him sore for a few days.
22:12I'm going to take good care of you.
22:16I'm going to nurse you back to health.
22:18Number 24.
22:19Harold Ciccata,
22:20Goldfinger.
22:21Oh, you must excuse Oddjob, Mr. Bond.
22:24He's an admirable man-servant,
22:25but mute.
22:26He's not a very good caddy.
22:27Oddjob is one of the most iconic villains
22:29in the James Bond franchise,
22:31known mainly for his steel-rimmed hat
22:33that has the power to decapitate statues.
22:36Bond faces Oddjob in hand-to-hand combat
22:38and gets his butt totally kicked.
22:40However, Bond eventually uses
22:42the henchman's steel hat against him
22:44and electrocutes Oddjob with a loose wire.
22:52If Oddjob's scream of pain
22:54sounds a little too real,
22:56that's probably because it was.
22:58Ciccata seriously burned his hand
22:59while filming the scene,
23:01but he refused to let go of the hat prop
23:02until the director called cut.
23:04Now that is one tough dude.
23:06Then again, he was a professional wrestler.
23:08Number 23.
23:10Skeet Ulrich, Scream.
23:12Billy, what are you doing here?
23:14Well, it occurred to me that
23:16I've never snuck through your bedroom window.
23:19Skeet Ulrich is one of the few people
23:21who can claim with certainty
23:22that they have been stabbed by an umbrella.
23:24During the movie's famous finale,
23:26Sidney dons the ghost face mask
23:27and stabs Billy multiple times
23:29with the tip of an umbrella.
23:33Ulrich was wearing a protective vest
23:35underneath his shirt,
23:36but that little bit of health and safety
23:38did not amount to much.
23:39The stunt woman underneath the ghost face mask
23:41missed her mark
23:42and stabbed Ulrich for real,
23:44resulting in a very genuine scream of pain.
23:46Accidentally.
23:47It was accidental.
23:50Like Stu,
23:51he was probably feeling a little woozy
23:53after that one.
23:54Number 22.
23:55Jim Carrey, Liar Liar.
23:58Think, think, think.
24:03Owie!
24:05Jim Carrey is at his manic best
24:07as Fletcher Reed,
24:08a lawyer who is cursed
24:09with the inability to lie.
24:11In a desperate attempt
24:12to prolong his case,
24:13Fletcher heads to the bathroom
24:15and beats himself up,
24:16hoping that the injuries
24:17will be cause for delay.
24:18According to Carrey Elwes,
24:20most of this scene
24:21was improvised by Carrey,
24:23and he performed
24:24all his own stunts.
24:25Furthermore,
24:26no sound effects
24:27were used in the scene.
24:28All of those bonks and slams
24:30were 100% genuine.
24:32The marks and welts
24:33on his face
24:34are likely just makeup,
24:35but that doesn't negate the fact
24:36that Carrey put his body
24:38on the line
24:38for this hilarious sequence.
24:40What the hell are you doing?
24:43I'm kicking my ass,
24:46do you mind?
24:47Number 21.
24:48Kicked by a Horse.
24:49The Last Samurai.
24:50We will show you no quarter.
24:52You ride against us,
24:54and you are the same as they are.
24:56I'll look for you on the field.
24:58Give this guy
24:58the Extra of the Year award,
25:00because he definitely deserves it.
25:02Edward Zwick's epic
25:03takes place
25:04in the late 19th century,
25:05with Tom Cruise
25:06playing a Civil War veteran
25:07who becomes embroiled
25:08in a Japanese rebellion.
25:10In one scene,
25:11Cruise rides up
25:12to a group of soldiers
25:13and dismounts
25:14in front of a
25:14particularly unlucky extra.
25:16The horse that Cruise
25:17was riding kicks out
25:18and hits the extra,
25:20making contact
25:20with a particularly
25:22sensitive body part.
25:23The guy keels over in pain,
25:25but amazingly,
25:26remains standing.
25:27Did they hire
25:28an actual samurai
25:29for this scene?
25:30Because that is one
25:31tough and disciplined dude.
25:33Captain.
25:37Godspeed.
25:38Number 20.
25:39Tom Cruise.
25:40Mission Impossible Fallout.
25:41At this point,
25:42we're starting to think
25:43that Tom Cruise
25:43has been replaced
25:44with a stunt-performing robot.
25:46He's inhuman.
25:51Fallout,
25:52the sixth installment
25:53in the Mission Impossible franchise,
25:55contains a shot
25:55in which Cruise's Ethan Hunt
25:57jumps between two buildings.
25:59Hunt slams into
26:00the second building,
26:00pulls himself up
26:01with a clear grimace of pain,
26:03and slowly hobbles off screen.
26:05It's a great realistic detail,
26:07and that's because
26:08Tom Cruise was actually
26:09in a lot of pain.
26:10So he jumps.
26:11That speed,
26:11that momentum.
26:12Here we go.
26:15And now watch that.
26:16Watch this.
26:20Cruise performed
26:20the stunt himself
26:21and broke his ankle
26:23upon impact
26:23with the building.
26:24Rather than calling
26:25for a cut,
26:26Cruise pulled himself up
26:27and finished the scene.
26:28Seven weeks
26:29and $80 million later,
26:31he was back at work
26:32good as new.
26:33Here is why,
26:34here is why
26:35Tom Cruise
26:36gets paid
26:37the big bucks.
26:38Okay?
26:39Number 19.
26:40Fred Astaire
26:41Follow the Fleet
26:42Injuries and dancing
26:44go together
26:45like peanut butter and jelly.
26:46Don't be funny.
26:47Follow the Fleet
26:48was the fifth collaboration
26:49between iconic dancing duo
26:50Fred Astaire
26:51and Ginger Rogers,
26:52and one of the movie's
26:53musical numbers
26:54required Rogers
26:55to wear a beaded gown.
27:03During the very first
27:05take of The Long Shot,
27:06Astaire was smacked
27:07across the face
27:08with a sleeve
27:08of heavy beads,
27:09leaving him
27:10somewhat maimed.
27:12His words,
27:13not ours.
27:14He continued the rest
27:15of the dance
27:15in a daze
27:15and asked for another take,
27:17believing that his injury
27:18had affected his performance.
27:20And while more takes
27:21were eventually performed,
27:22it was the first
27:23that ended up in the movie.
27:24Beaded,
27:25sleeve slaps,
27:26and all.
27:26number 18,
27:39Jake Gyllenhaal,
27:40Nightcrawler.
27:41Good morning, everyone.
27:42Thanks for joining us.
27:43I'm Pat Harvey.
27:43Jake Gyllenhaal committed
27:45to the role of Lou Bloom,
27:47a criminal turned
27:48crime scene videographer.
27:50Bloom is not quite right mentally,
27:52and it shows
27:53when his frustrations
27:54finally come to a head
27:55in this scene.
27:57He's lost out
27:57on an important story
27:59to a competitor,
28:00and he's clearly stressed
28:01and angry.
28:02He takes that anger
28:03out on his bathroom mirror,
28:05screaming at it,
28:06shaking it,
28:07and eventually
28:07slamming it shut,
28:09breaking it.
28:09If the scene
28:20looks a bit too real,
28:22that's because Gyllenhaal
28:23got really into it
28:24and smashed the mirror
28:25by accident,
28:26slicing through his thumb
28:28in the process.
28:29You want to see it?
28:29It's gross.
28:30Oh, I do want to see it.
28:31It's super gross.
28:31It looks, yeah,
28:32because I know it just,
28:34wow, that's quite a,
28:35how many stitches did you get?
28:37He apparently needed
28:38upwards of 40 stitches,
28:39but the shot of the mirror
28:41breaking was left
28:42in the final version
28:43of Nightcrawler.
28:44Number 17,
28:45Ellen Burstyn,
28:46The Exorcist.
28:48In one of the most
28:49famous scenes of The Exorcist,
28:50a possessed Regan
28:51assaults her mother,
28:52Chris,
28:52and slaps her across the room,
28:54resulting in Chris
28:55screaming in distress.
28:59It wasn't acting.
29:01That's the scream
29:02of a back injury
29:03that's caused
29:03lifelong pain.
29:05To film the sequence,
29:06a stuntman was needed
29:07to forcefully pull
29:08actress Ellen Burstyn
29:09onto her back
29:10using a wire.
29:11Billy said to him,
29:13okay, don't pull her so hard.
29:16But as I turned away,
29:18I felt them exchange a look.
29:20Burstyn told director
29:21William Friedkin
29:22that the stuntman
29:23was pulling too hard
29:23and that she feared
29:24for her safety.
29:25But Friedkin didn't listen.
29:27On the next take,
29:28Burstyn injured her back
29:30and screamed in pain,
29:31which is the take
29:32you see in the movie.
29:33The injury wasn't debilitating,
29:35but it did leave Burstyn
29:36with a lifetime
29:37of back discomfort.
29:38Because I couldn't stand
29:39that he was willing
29:40to just get a quick shot
29:42of it before they
29:43called the ambulance,
29:44you know.
29:46Number 16,
29:47Diane Kruger
29:48in Glorious Bastards.
29:50Coffee.
29:51In a tale of Nazi-killing bastards,
29:53things are bound
29:54to get dangerous,
29:55even for the actors involved.
29:57German movie star
29:58Bridget von Hammersmark,
30:00played by Diane Kruger,
30:01is actually a spy
30:03for the good guys.
30:04Something that doesn't
30:05go over too well
30:06with Christoph Waltz's
30:07Nazi colonel Hans Landa.
30:08Voila.
30:11What's that American expression?
30:13If the shoe fits,
30:14you must wear it.
30:15When the Jew Hunter
30:16confirms his theory,
30:17he lunges at
30:19Miss von Hammersmark
30:19and chokes the life
30:21right out of her.
30:22It seems like Kruger's
30:24acting here is on point,
30:26but the truth is
30:26she actually can't breathe.
30:28Because of the scene's importance,
30:34the danger involved,
30:35and the fact that
30:35he had a very specific
30:37vision in mind,
30:38Quentin Tarantino
30:39himself strangled Kruger,
30:41with his hands
30:42used in the close-ups.
30:43We're now in the close-ups.
30:47Number 15,
30:48Harrison Ford,
30:49The Fugitive.
30:50Harrison Ford
30:51is one of those actors
30:52who doesn't let
30:53a mere limp
30:53hold him down.
30:54You find this man.
30:56You find this man.
30:57And if that means
30:58his character
30:58walks with a limp
30:59throughout the movie,
31:00then his character
31:00walks with a limp
31:01throughout the movie.
31:07While filming a scene
31:09in the woods,
31:09Ford tore some
31:10of the ligaments
31:11in his leg.
31:12While this should be
31:13cause for surgery,
31:14recovery,
31:14and significant
31:15filming delays,
31:16Ford simply soldiered
31:17through and refused
31:17to treat his injury.
31:22And owing to the fact
31:23that Ford was filming
31:24with torn ligaments,
31:25his character,
31:26Dr. Richard Kimball,
31:27can be seen limping
31:28throughout much
31:28of the movie.
31:29He's clearly taking
31:30the phrase
31:31walk it off to heart.
31:33Number 14,
31:34Jim Caviezel,
31:35The Passion of the Christ.
31:36Playing Jesus Christ
31:38in Mel Gibson's
31:38biblical opus
31:39sounds like
31:40the role of a lifetime.
31:41And that role
31:42went to Jim Caviezel.
31:46Unfortunately,
31:47Caviezel went through
31:47absolute torture
31:48while filming the movie.
31:50He suffered migraines
31:51from his swollen eye makeup,
31:52incurred a lung infection
31:54and pneumonia,
31:55dislocated his shoulder
31:56while carrying
31:56the 150-pound cross
31:58and was even
31:59struck by lightning
32:00while filming
32:01the Sermon on the Mount
32:02sequence.
32:03During the lashing scene,
32:04Caviezel was accidentally
32:05whipped across the back
32:06on two separate occasions,
32:08a pain he described
32:09as, quote,
32:10so horrific
32:10that you can't get air.
32:12Well,
32:12suppose that's one way
32:13to get a great reaction shot.
32:14She may be playing
32:27an android,
32:28but Daryl Hannah
32:29is still very much
32:30a human.
32:31A fact she proved
32:32on the set of Blade Runner.
32:35Hannah plays
32:36basic pleasure model
32:37Pris,
32:38and in one scene
32:39she encounters
32:39genetic designer
32:40J.F. Sebastian
32:41in a rainy alleyway.
32:42She's surprised
32:44and scared,
32:45so she bolts.
32:46But as she's
32:47running away,
32:48she slips
32:48and breaks
32:49a car window.
32:51Hey!
32:53This was in fact
32:54not scripted.
32:55Hannah actually
32:56slipped on the wet pavement,
32:57and her arm
32:58actually went
32:59through a real
32:59glass window.
33:01But she managed
33:01to stay in character
33:02for the rest of the scene.
33:04That's even more
33:04impressive when you
33:05find out she
33:06chipped her elbow
33:07in eight places.
33:08I'm lost.
33:09Don't worry.
33:12I won't hurt you.
33:13Number 12.
33:14Michael J. Fox
33:15Back to the Future
33:16Part 3
33:16Michael J. Fox
33:18came a little
33:19too close
33:19to feeling
33:20like a condemned
33:20outlaw.
33:21You better run,
33:22squirrel.
33:22When Marty McFly
33:23arrives in 1885,
33:25he is pretty much
33:26immediately hanged
33:27by Mad Dog Tannen.
33:31While most of
33:32the wide shots
33:33were performed
33:33by a stuntman,
33:34we do get a brief
33:35shot of Fox
33:36clearly struggling
33:37for breath.
33:38That's because
33:39he was.
33:40Fox had offered
33:40to film the sequence
33:41without a box
33:42to make it look
33:42more realistic.
33:44Unfortunately,
33:44he mishandled
33:45the noose
33:45and ended up
33:46actually hanging
33:47himself.
33:49The crew believed
33:50he was giving
33:50the performance
33:51of his career,
33:52when in actuality,
33:53he was just dying
33:54in front of everyone.
33:55Fox ended up
33:56passing out in the noose,
33:58and that's when
33:58director Robert Zemeckis
34:00realized he wasn't acting.
34:02But it's good
34:02to see you, Marty.
34:04Number 11.
34:05Martin Sheen,
34:05Apocalypse Now.
34:06Each time I looked around,
34:08the walls moved in
34:09a little tighter.
34:11To introduce us
34:11to Captain Benjamin Willard,
34:13Martin Sheen shambles
34:14around his Saigon hotel room
34:16drunk as a skunk.
34:19Sheen decided
34:19to go very method
34:20with this one,
34:21which is a fancy way
34:22of saying he was
34:23actually drunk
34:24when they filmed
34:25this scene.
34:25That's probably why
34:26he thought it'd be
34:27a good idea
34:28for him to punch
34:29a mirror.
34:30Of course,
34:34as this list proves,
34:36it's hard to break
34:37a mirror and not
34:38cut yourself.
34:39And Sheen indeed
34:40did slice open
34:41his hand in the process.
34:42But he kept going,
34:44rolling over his bed
34:45and smearing his blood
34:46all over the sheets
34:47and his face.
34:48And ultimately
34:49ending the scene
34:49bloody,
34:50drunk,
34:51naked,
34:52and sobbing.
34:53The climax of
35:02Patriot Games
35:03sees Harrison Ford's
35:04Jack and Sean Bean's
35:05Sean fighting
35:06on a speedboat.
35:07While filming the sequence,
35:09Ford was instructed
35:09to mime
35:10pushing a boat hook
35:11up into Bean's face.
35:17Either Ford pushed
35:18a little too hard
35:19or Bean was
35:19a little too close
35:20because the boat hook
35:21actually slammed
35:22into Bean's face
35:23and knocked him
35:23backwards.
35:24The accident
35:25left Bean
35:25with several stitches
35:26and a distinctive
35:27scar over his left eye.
35:29At least he has
35:29a cool story
35:30to tell people
35:30when they ask.
35:31Who else can say
35:32they've been hit
35:32with a boat hook
35:33by Harrison Ford?
35:34It was
35:35rage.
35:40Pure rage.
35:41Number 9.
35:42James Franco,
35:43Pineapple Express.
35:45I thought
35:45the hurricane season
35:46was over.
35:46Oh, I'm sorry.
35:47One of James Franco's
35:48most popular roles
35:49is that of Saul Silver
35:50in the stoner comedy
35:51Pineapple Express.
35:53In one of the movie's
35:54funnier sequences,
35:55Saul thinks he sees
35:56something in the woods,
35:57causing him and Dale
35:58to run away
35:59in abject terror.
36:01While running,
36:02Dale trips and falls
36:03onto a rock
36:03while Saul runs
36:05headlong into a tree.
36:06Franco did the stunt
36:07himself
36:07and hit a safety pad
36:08that had been screwed
36:09onto the trunk.
36:10Ironically,
36:11the screw head
36:11was jutting out
36:12of the safety pad
36:13and Franco ran
36:14straight into it.
36:16Oh, ow!
36:18Fun fact,
36:19the gray headband
36:20that Saul wears
36:21throughout the movie
36:21was used to hide
36:22Franco's stitches.
36:27When he was playing
36:30Olympic wrestler
36:30Mark Schultz,
36:32Channing Tatum
36:32tried to be
36:33as authentic
36:34as possible
36:35and in this case,
36:36that meant
36:37destroying a mirror
36:38with his face.
36:39By this point
36:40in the film,
36:40Schultz is feeling
36:41the mental strain.
36:43After losing
36:43an important match,
36:44he paces around
36:45his hotel room,
36:46hitting himself
36:47angrily and crying.
36:49The most intense
36:50moment comes
36:51when he stands
36:51in front of a mirror
36:52and proceeds
36:53to smash it
36:54with his head
36:54three times,
36:56shattering it
36:57and cutting
36:58his forehead.
37:02Though he was
37:03actually bleeding
37:04and came within
37:05inches of hitting
37:06a stud in the wall,
37:07Tatum finished
37:08the scene beautifully
37:09and he claims
37:11not to remember
37:12filming this at all.
37:17This chest-waxing
37:28sequence is now
37:29iconic
37:29and part of the
37:30magic stems
37:31from its realism.
37:36Wanting the scene
37:37to look as true
37:37to life,
37:38not to mention
37:38as funny as possible,
37:40Steve Carell
37:40decided to bite the
37:41bullet and actually
37:42get his chest waxed.
37:43His clear hesitance
37:48and screams of pain
37:49are all real,
37:50as is Paul Rudd
37:51and Seth Rogen's
37:52laughing.
37:53By the end
37:53of the waxing,
37:54Andy has tears
37:55in his eyes
37:56and blood spots
37:57adorning his chest.
37:58That is not makeup
37:59nor a great bit
38:01of acting from Carell.
38:04Those are very real
38:06tears and very real
38:07blood spots.
38:08We thank Carell
38:09for putting his body
38:10and comfort on the line
38:11just for our comedic
38:12enjoyment.
38:13Not the nipple.
38:14Not the nipple.
38:15Not the nipple.
38:15Not the nipple.
38:16Number 6.
38:17Sylvester Stallone,
38:18Rocky IV.
38:19I must break you.
38:21This is widely
38:22considered to be
38:23the goofiest movie
38:24in the Rocky franchise,
38:25but it has an amazing
38:26final fight
38:27between Rocky
38:27and Ivan Drago.
38:28You're falling
38:29to Rocky V.
38:30You're falling
38:31to the finish.
38:31To make the fight
38:32appear more authentic
38:33and brutal,
38:34Stallone asked
38:35Dolph Lundgren
38:35to punch him for real.
38:37He took three
38:38straight takes
38:38of the powerful
38:39body shots
38:39before he felt
38:40a burning sensation
38:41in his chest.
38:42Stallone proceeded
38:47to ignore the discomfort
38:48until his blood pressure
38:50shot up to 260
38:51and he had trouble breathing.
38:54He was subsequently
38:54flown to a hospital
38:55and spent time
38:56in the ICU
38:56where he learned
38:58that his heart
38:58had slammed
38:59against his breastbone
39:00and begun to swell.
39:01The Princess Bride
39:02is a fantastical fairy tale
39:12filled with swashbuckling pirates,
39:15six-fingered men
39:16and, of course,
39:17princesses.
39:18At one point,
39:19Princess Buttercup
39:20and her true love Wesley
39:21are confronted
39:22by the dastardly
39:23Prince Humperdinck
39:24and Count Rugen.
39:25And Carrie Elwes'
39:26Wesley is ultimately
39:28captured.
39:29To make sure
39:29their new prisoner
39:30is compliant,
39:31Christopher Guest's Rugen,
39:33also known as
39:34the six-fingered man,
39:35hits him in the head
39:36with the butt of a sword
39:37and knocks him out.
39:38You have six fingers
39:40on your right hand.
39:41Someone was looking for you.
39:44According to Elwes,
39:45there were no rubber swords
39:47on hand
39:47and they couldn't get
39:48a good take
39:49by faking it.
39:50So, Guest actually hit him
39:52and actually knocked him out.
39:55Elwes woke up later
39:56in the hospital,
39:57wondering what the heck
39:58had happened.
39:58The scene that you see
40:00in the movie
40:00is in fact me being
40:01knocked out for real.
40:02Don't believe me.
40:04Number 4.
40:05Jackie Chan,
40:06Police Story.
40:07Police Story contains
40:08one of the most
40:09insane Jackie Chan stunts.
40:11And that is certainly
40:12saying something.
40:16It involves Chan
40:17jumping onto a metal pole,
40:19sliding down
40:19through a series of lights
40:20and crashing through
40:21a glass ceiling
40:22onto a display below.
40:37Chan was actually
40:38very hesitant
40:39to perform the stunt
40:40and was ecstatic
40:41following its
40:42successful completion.
40:43But once the
40:44immediate adrenaline
40:45wore off,
40:46Chan realized
40:46the skin on his palms
40:48had been peeled away.
40:49The power.
40:50I don't know
40:51where the power
40:51come from.
40:52Then I turn around
40:53and now I see
40:53600 extra
40:55and I just
40:56to the
40:57the
40:57the
40:57the
40:58the thing
40:58I hit myself
41:01blues.
41:03I said
41:03The hot prop lights
41:05had significantly
41:06heated the metal pole,
41:07resulting in
41:08second degree burns
41:09to Chan's hands.
41:10All things considered,
41:11we think he got off
41:12very lucky.
41:13Number 3.
41:14Sylvester Stallone,
41:16First Blood.
41:16In movie badass
41:21John Rambo's
41:22first outing,
41:23our titular protagonist,
41:24played by
41:25Sylvester Stallone,
41:26is being pursued
41:27by the abusive
41:28Hope Washington
41:29Police Department.
41:30The chase
41:31eventually leads
41:31to a cliff
41:32where Rambo
41:33is hanging on
41:34for dear life,
41:35about to be shot at
41:36by a cop in a helicopter.
41:38With no other options,
41:39Rambo takes a blind leap,
41:41tumbles through the trees,
41:42and lands
41:43on a tree branch.
41:45Being the professional
41:46action star he is,
41:47Stallone performed
41:48this stunt himself.
41:50However,
41:50things didn't quite
41:51go as planned.
41:56The painful scream
41:58you hear when he lands
41:59is not acting.
42:00When all was said
42:01and done,
42:02Sly walked away
42:02with a cracked rib,
42:03but an amazing
42:04stunt performance.
42:11Number 2.
42:13Leonardo DiCaprio,
42:14Django Unchained.
42:16Why don't they kill us?
42:19Here's another
42:20Tarantino movie,
42:21but this time
42:21the director
42:22didn't personally
42:23injure his star.
42:24In Django Unchained,
42:26Leonardo DiCaprio
42:27plays a psychotic
42:28slave owner
42:29who's hosting
42:29a dinner for Django,
42:30played by Jamie Fox,
42:32and Dr. Schultz,
42:33played by Christoph Waltz.
42:35During the meal,
42:36DiCaprio's character
42:37unnervingly reveals
42:39his knowledge
42:39of Django's plan
42:40to free his wife.
42:41And as you can imagine,
42:43this makes him
42:44mighty angry.
42:48So angry, in fact,
42:51that DiCaprio
42:52slams his hand
42:53on the table,
42:54breaking a glass
42:55and slicing his skin
42:56in the process.
42:58Pretty soon,
42:59the audience can see
43:00that DiCaprio's hand
43:01is completely covered
43:02in blood.
43:03But like a true thespian,
43:04he gives an amazing performance
43:06and uses his injury
43:08to his advantage.
43:09And if y'all want to leave
43:11Candyland with Broomhilda,
43:13the price
43:14is $12,000.

43:33In the second
43:44Lord of the Rings film,
43:45Viggo Mortensen
43:46returns as Aragorn
43:48with a performance
43:48as powerful,
43:50emotional,
43:50and raw
43:51as that in
43:52The Fellowship of the Ring.
43:58One of his most
44:01visceral scenes
44:02comes at the beginning
44:02of the film.
44:04Angry at the thought
44:04that his Hobbit friends
44:05might be dead,
44:06a rage-filled Aragorn
44:08kicks a helmet
44:09on the ground.
44:10After doing
44:10four takes of this shot,
44:12Viggo broke two toes
44:13on his fifth take.
44:15Meaning that scream
44:16heard in the finished film
44:17is very real.
44:24Even so,
44:26Viggo kept working.
44:27And director Peter Jackson
44:29said he didn't even realize
44:30his star was injured
44:31until much later.
44:33He just thought
44:33Viggo had given it
44:34his all.
44:35Which injury
44:36sounded the worst to you?
