00:00Final weekend of the college football regular season is rivalry week.
00:09But outside of just rivalries, it's also known as hate week.
00:14And boy, do we see that in a big way this weekend and on the final Saturday of the 2024
00:20college football regular season.
00:22And there's a lot of hatred in many rivalries, a lot of pageantry and tradition.
00:27It boils deep and not a game, but the game between Ohio State and Michigan, and a lot
00:33of that is historic, especially for this Buckeyes senior class that had lost three consecutive
00:39games against the Maize and Blue.
00:41Watched Michigan win three consecutive Big Ten titles, play in three straight college
00:46football playoffs, and last year stand atop the mountain as a national champion in the
00:51sport.
00:52But it felt like on Saturday against the Michigan team that had just won their sixth
00:57game, blowing out Northwestern.
00:59And when Ohio State is a three touchdown home favorite in the shoe, it was time to release
01:04some of that anger.
01:07Nope.
01:08Michigan wins a fourth consecutive over Ohio State outright as a 20 and a half point road
01:15underdog in Columbus, 13 to 10.
01:20That was the result of the game, and then it led to the post-game skirfuffle, skirmish,
01:27fight, as Michigan tried to take the block M and plant it in the middle of the shoe,
01:33in the middle of the O, and Ohio State finally took exception to something leading to this
01:39post-game scuffle.
01:41Again, we are going to see the end of the flag plant era, sadly perhaps, in college
01:46football because of the post-game activities.
01:49You never want to see the history of a rivalry end in a post-game fight.
01:54You want to save it for in between the white lines in those 60 minutes.
01:58But Michigan made a statement more than once on Saturday in CBUS.
02:02They certainly did.
02:03And by the way, just to get the flag planting situation, like look, we're college kids at
02:07Institutes of Higher Learning, like Michigan men, right?
02:10That's a great college school to go and get your education.
02:13Let's think this through a little bit more.
02:14How about we have the team managers come out and put like the flag base at the 50 yard
02:19line.
02:20Then you go in there.
02:21You don't have to jam it in there.
02:22Just place the flag in there so it holds up and you can have your fun at this point because
02:24I think the anger gets of the actual planting of the flag itself.
02:28I love it for the spectacle of it, but you're right about this.
02:31You know, college football is going to come down the minute they start saying kids flood
02:34the field off.
02:35Fine universities, a couple hundred grand and you do it again, we'll have even more
02:38penalties on top of that.
02:39Theoretically, you're not supposed to do this on the other field because you know it's going
02:43to stoke a response from the other team.
02:45Now if it's pre-planned where it's like, okay, the game is over, the ceremonial flag
02:49planting at center, that could be something a little bit differently, but you know, the
02:52other team is angry.
02:54You know, they're mad, you know, they're waiting around and all they see is a group of players
02:58go to one end of it, pick up the flags, sprint to midfield.
03:01You know, there's going to be a collision course where those guys are going to be fighting
03:04at that point.
03:05It's probably going to be taken away.
03:06It's a shame because it is a really interesting point the way it plays out.
03:09Let's get back to the game itself.
03:11This was the game Ohio State was supposed to like, you know what, it's get back time.
03:16We've been embarrassed the past couple of years.
03:17You might've been cheating against us here.
03:19Now you can't cheat.
03:20Now you don't have any talent basically on your team, on the offensive side, outside
03:23of a running back.
03:24We're going to get you 35 to three, 42 to three.
03:27It's hammer time here.
03:28Michigan came into this game and had a quarterback throw for 62 yards and two interceptions,
03:33and you lost that game for Ohio State.
03:35Then there's so many times we look and say, didn't see that coming.
03:38Davis Warren completed 29 passes out of 32.
03:41He was ungodly in that game, unbelievable performance.
03:45What did you want him to do?
03:46Michigan was horrendous on offense.
03:48Ohio State with their million dollar starting lineup, quarterbacks, running backs, wide
03:53receivers, defensive talent.
03:55This should have been the easiest victory of the past 25 years for Ohio State, and they
03:59got clowned in their own building and flag spiked to end it here.
04:03What an embarrassing performance, but here's what happens.
04:06In modern day college football now, Ben, with the advent of the playoffs, Ryan Day would
04:11have been fired Sunday morning, maybe Saturday night, because you know what that means?
04:16He's not going to the college, excuse me, Big Ten championship game, and he's not with
04:21two losses making it into the college football playoff.
04:23Now he goes, what do you want me to do?
04:25Make the college football playoff, and they might even win a round or two or challenge
04:28for a national championship.
04:30That's the difference.
04:31He's fired last year.
04:32Now he might get a contract extension, depending on what he actually does in the playoff.
