00:00So, it finished here. Crystal Palace 1, Newcastle United 1. A very, very, very late equaliser
00:08from Crystal Palace earning the hosts a point after an own goal putting Newcastle ahead
00:12early in the second half and you've got to say straight away it's, you know, conceding
00:17such a late equaliser will hurt Newcastle, you know, it will be one they'll look back
00:20on with lots of regret. It was a simple ball they should have been dealt with at the back
00:25post, they'll feel they should have done better and obviously whenever you concede a last
00:29minute goal to either drop points or lose a game it's going to be a bitter pill to swallow
00:33and one that, you know, the fans will be unhappy, obviously Eddie Howe and his group will be
00:37unhappy, but when you look at the games as a whole, Newcastle United were very fortunate
00:40to even be ahead at that point, very fortunate to get anything out of the game. It started
00:45off Eddie Howe's mid-term goal calls with his team, first Dan Byrne came in for Lloyd
00:49Kelly, that change was expected, but the other change he made was Sandro Tonali coming in
00:53for Sean Longstaff, sat him in the midfield of Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Joe Willock
00:58with Joel Lennon, Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon up front, so it felt like a ball call
01:02from Eddie Howe, one the fans might have wanted to see, it did unbalance the team maybe, but
01:07you know it was one the fans have wanted to see, Tonali start games, they'll be happy
01:11that that happened. I felt for his credit to fair, Tonali, I thought he was one of Newcastle
01:16United's best players, he wasn't the biggest of bars, but I thought he was alright, but
01:20yeah, after Newcastle started a game, they started alright for 5-10 minutes, I think
01:27they had lots of ball, but other than that, they didn't really press, well they certainly
01:30didn't test Diane Henderson at all in the presser palace, but they had lots of pretty
01:34football, actually it wasn't even pretty football, I say pretty football, it was standard football,
01:39Palace dealt with it very well, and yeah the big story of the first half was Alexander
01:44Isak going off injured, it was a 5-10 minute period in that first half, first Joe Willock
01:48went down, fortunately he just had to change his football boots, Joe Lennon went down holding
01:52shoulders and Isak went down, tried to continue and went down again and was taken off, he
01:56was replaced by Harvey Barnes, so just a little shift, Anthony Gould went in to strike
02:01a row, Joe Lennon stayed out left and Harvey Barnes came on the right, so that was a little
02:05change there, and one that will, Newcastle will be really hopeful that Isak is fit and
02:11that it was just a precaution to take him off, and obviously any how-to-speak professional,
02:15no doubt my colleague Dom Steele will have the very latest on Isak's injury there from
02:19Howe, but yeah, that was the main talking point of the first half, from a Newcastle
02:23point of view, Palace had a couple of good chances, one glorious chance from Daniel Munoz
02:27after a quick break from Palace from a Newcastle corner, the ball got slid in from Sartre,
02:31Munoz back post, and I can't believe he missed it, but he's missed it in there, he slid in,
02:35missed it, Newcastle had a lifeline, and at that point when you go into half-time, 0-0,
02:39they were fortunate to go in there at the break, and you think right, can they react,
02:41can they do what they've done, I say this so many times again, I keep repeating myself
02:45week on week, I've had to do this so many times, there's something not right, because
02:48I haven't done it often, but you think right, can they regroup and think right, that's a
02:52disappointing 45 minutes, but we've now got 45 minutes to make it right, they're against
02:56Crystal Palace, started the day in 19th place, second bottom of the table, they've only won
03:00one game this year, Premier League game this year, you think Newcastle, this is their chance
03:03to really step on the authority, and they didn't, they couldn't do anything that second
03:08half, their goal came from an own goal, to be fair, the other bright spot was that free
03:13kick, it was a brilliant free kick, Lewis Howe, square ball to Sandro Tonali, Tonali
03:17with a perfectly weighted pass to Gordon, Gordon fired a ball across and it came off
03:21Gahee, into the back, Mark Gahee in the back of the net, 1-0 Newcastle, shock, it was a
03:25completely against the run of play, brilliant set-piece move, we've, you know, bemoaned
03:29their lack of creativity from set-pieces, that was a really good one, and you think
03:32right, this is the time, Eddie Howe and Newcastle have been the best when they can press on,
03:36when they get that goal, you think right, get another one, you know, can we really put
03:39our foot down, they weren't able to do that, but as the game went on, they did feel like
03:44they were going to hold on, they had a really good period of play, about five minutes from
03:48the end, where they had the ball in that palace hall for a good five minutes, Palace
03:51couldn't get near it, they kept drawing fouls, winning corners, but eventually, the pressure
03:56told, you know, Newcastle thought they dealt with it, Joe Linton headed the ball out with
04:00a big roar to the crowd, getting it, opposite side of the pitch, getting them up, and you
04:03think right, this is it, they've got one, probably one or two more tactics to sort of
04:06repel, and that was it, ball came in from the left-hand side, over the top, now it seemed
04:10to go over the top of Lewis Howe and Joe Linton, not really too sure who was to blame, if anyone
04:14was to blame, I'm sure, they'll both be disappointed not getting out, headed out,
04:17Danny Munoz headed into the ground, into the near post, Nick Pope couldn't get it,
04:20it's a disappointing full one for Pope, he thought he wanted to keep that out, he did
04:26make a couple of good saves earlier in the day, so you think, well, he has probably saved
04:29them, and Dan Byrne made a brilliant block on the line earlier in that second half, so
04:33you did think, you know, they were pushing their luck a little bit, but you thought at
04:37that point, had they managed to survive it, they didn't, Crystal Palace scored, and as
04:41I said, again, it's a hard one to discuss, you know, Newcastle United will feel disappointed,
04:45I'm disappointed, I'll be disappointed, the staff, players will be disappointed, but they
04:49didn't deserve a point from this game, so you could say it's a two points drop, of course
04:52it is, they conceded the 95th minute, but it's also a point game because they shouldn't
04:55have got anything, stats will tell you that, anyone who watched the game will tell you
04:58that, so it's a really hard one to dissect, what we dissect, but what we do know is they've
05:02got to have a massive improvement for when Liverpool come on Wednesday night, they need
05:06to put a performance down, they've done it against the big teams this year, Arsenal have
05:09come, Newcastle United got beat, Man City got a point, you know, they got a point against
05:14Man City, Tottenham were beaten, so they've done it against the big teams, they just need
05:16to do that again on Wednesday night, but they can't keep dropping points at games like this,
05:19that's one point from West Ham and Crystal Palace, now they're going to have to get something
05:22off Liverpool, because if they, you know, leave this week with just, say, two points,
05:26even if they get a point off Liverpool, they go on a trip against Brentford next week,
05:29Brentford have had a brilliant win at home, they are fantastic at home, that's almost,
05:32that's something like a really tough game, and then you go into a, you know, a very difficult
05:36festive period, they always have the games come thick and fast, and you start to worry
05:38for them, but right now, they'll go home, they've got a point in the bag, far from
05:42the best of three, actually, it's probably one of their worst displays all year, really,
05:45I think, and a couple of games, like Bright, for example, Everton, they've performed all
05:49right, but got beat, or, you know, Drogue today, they didn't perform very well, they
05:54managed to steal a point, they managed to get a point from somehow, could have been
05:58three, that would be the really disappointing thing, I think, after having, sort of, 10,
06:0115 minutes after the game, to reflect on that, I think that would be the overriding feeling,
06:05and it would be a mixed one, it would be a lot of people going, we've got a point, a
06:07lot of people going, that was not very good, because it wasn't, and now they need to improve
06:11for Liverpool and Brentford coming up, because they're two massive games, and, you know,
06:14this is a really pivotal point of the season, pivotal point of any season, but in particular,
06:17now, they don't want to, you know, let that league, Constantine out, and they, you know,
06:22they start to lose their place, but they also have that Carabao Cup game, as well, in a
06:26couple of weeks, so it's a massive period of the season, the re-meet, get back on it,
06:30but yeah, as I said, Newcastle won, Crystal Palace won, really hard-monitored, to figure
06:34out where that leaves Newcastle, obviously, the emotions will be, the fact that they'll
06:39be disappointed, because of Constantine on the 95th minute, of course, but they didn't
06:42deserve a win, so, that's my match summary, I think a really difficult one, no doubt,
06:46I'll change my mind a couple of times on the way back, but yeah, please stay tuned to Shields,
06:50because they're for all the latest Newcastle United news, and of course, reaction and updates
06:53from this game, and against Liverpool on Wednesday night.
