Joe Buck reacts to Newcastle United's 1-0 Carabao Cup win over AFC Wimbledon at St James' Park. A Fabian Schar penalty on the stroke of half-time was enough to secure their passage to Round 4 and a home tie against Chelsea.

00:00So Newcastle United are through to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup after a 1-0 win over
00:05AFC Wimbledon here. Fabian Scherr's penalty on the stroke-up half-time was enough for
00:10Eddie Howside to knock out a very resilient AFC Wimbledon side on a largely forgettable
00:15night I think at St James' Park. After the highs of Saturday, obviously that one more
00:19draw against Manchester City, everyone was impressed with the intensity Newcastle showed
00:23on that day, you know lots of run-ins, tip-five really by Anthony Gordon. It was a lot more
00:27subdued performance tonight I would say against Wimbledon who, to be fair to the credit, stuck
00:32in large parts, defended really well, really stopped Newcastle attacking. They had lots
00:38of men behind the ball and Newcastle couldn't get their strength which is of course on the
00:41transition there, you know, direct and quick attacks. Newcastle just couldn't really get
00:44it going and break down a very resilient defensive set-up and probably, I wouldn't say fortunate
00:50for the goal because they did deserve it, they played, you know, deserved it. I haven't
00:53seen the stats but I imagine they had upwards of 80% possession here and I don't think they
00:57were necessarily bad in any way, I just think it was a bit lacklustre and a bit lacking
01:02ideas up front I think. Yeah, as I said, the goal came through a penalty, a strange one
01:07to be fair, initially I don't think the referee, Darren Bond, gave it. He waved it away with
01:11a foul on Almiron but then all of a sudden, probably about four or five seconds after
01:15the incident, after it looked like the ball had, you know, the referee had waved the way
01:19the protester, the assistant, right next to the incident flagged and then Bond pointed
01:23it to the spot and yeah, Cher stood up and slotted it home, capping for the night. Fabin
01:30Cher, he did really well. I think he was probably one of Newcastle's best players on the pitch
01:35throughout the evening. Eddie Howe just spoke to Eddie Howe there, he rang into Miguel Almiron,
01:40it was probably one of their most impressive performances and to be fair to Almiron, he
01:43was very good down the right. He's really struggled for the ball, he hasn't had a kick
01:49the ball all season so it's good to see him back on the pitch and yeah, it's a largely
01:54forgettable night for Newcastle but ultimately, Cup football is about winning and they've
01:57won this 1-0 and if this is the start, sorry, the second game of a run, you know, who cares
02:03if it's a 1-0 win against a League Two opposition? They've done it, they're through to the next
02:07round and we all know Chelsea awaits here at the end of the month and that's going to
02:10be a big test for them, Chelsea at home. Obviously, Chelsea beat Newcastle in the quarter-finals
02:15last year, that was at Stamford Bridge, so that'll be a big test for them and one that
02:19hopefully the crowd will get up for. Newcastle beat Man City here in the Cup last year, they
02:23obviously went to Old Trafford and won, so they have had some really good wins in recent
02:28times and obviously that Chelsea one is going to be a big game but of course, they've got
02:32Everton on Saturday, they'll need a better performance in the show tonight against Everton,
02:36much more resilient Everton. In recent weeks, they got their first win of the season so
02:39it's going to be a very interesting couple of days for Newcastle but ultimately, forget
02:44about everything that matters, the performance levels might not have been the way it was,
02:48it doesn't matter, Newcastle are through and that's a major positive. Like myself, many
02:53of the fans and even Lesley Howard, I think a lot of people will forget this game very
02:58quickly but ultimately Newcastle United, 1-0 winners against Wimbledon and through to the
03:02next round of the Carabao Cup.
