00:00Just a debacle of a loss for the Patriots. Non-competitive, man, as bad as it's been in a month plus.
00:07You got players laughing in the locker room after the fact.
00:10Mayo saying there's nothing he can do once the players get out there between the white lines.
00:16His job is done.
00:17I mean it's just, that's what's going to get him fired, Keefe.
00:22If he gets fired, and you guys can weigh in on that all day long here on Patriots Monday, 617-779-7937
00:29You said this earlier and I agree a thousand percent. It's not because they're three and nine.
00:32What's going to get him fired is that they look incompetent, they don't know what they're doing.
00:36The Marcus Jones story didn't help last week.
00:38By the way, not one snap on offense in this game.
00:40No.
00:41They went the other way with it.
00:42Of course we were going to sprinkle it in so he didn't need to know.
00:45So like that didn't help?
00:47No, that's insane.
00:48The communication thing too, like they preach this communication.
00:51Collaboration.
00:52Knocking down silos.
00:53Breaking down silos, Keefe.
00:55And then you get people being like, well it's not my job to tell.
00:58Well, DeMarcus Covington told us on Friday.
00:59No, he has a job.
01:00I'm not the guy to talk to.
01:01Well, he's got his hands full on having a terrible defense.
01:04He is swimming in it.
01:07Like their defense blows.
01:09So they're not going to fire Mayo maybe at all this year, but certainly not in season.
01:13Would they fire Covington in season?
01:14I don't think so.
01:15I don't think they'd fire any first year guys.
01:17I don't think they would.
01:18Teams have.
01:19I don't think at this point with five games to go, I'd be surprised.
01:24I mean, I guess you can't really rule out anything.
01:27I think they're going to have a long reassessment in the offseason.
01:31I would hope.
01:32Hopefully anything is up for grabs.
01:33I would hope.
01:34So how did that impact Mayo's job security?
01:36Let's get to that with your phone calls here on Jones and Keefe.
01:39Again, a Patriots Monday.
01:40We'll talk to Christian Gonzalez.
01:41We'll talk to Hunter Henry.
01:42We have what happened coming up less than an hour from now.
01:45We'll take you around the NFL with all your Patriots phone calls.
01:47Dan is in Haverhill.
01:48Good morning, Dan.
01:49Dan?
01:50Hey, good morning, Herman.
01:52Thanks for having me.
01:53I was just in regards to Mayo and his coaching, the field product.
01:57By half time, I was outside rigging leaves.
02:00I'm sure a lot of people in the room were doing that.
02:02If you're looking for a fan base as this sport is growing internationally
02:07and as kids are getting into the sport
02:09and you want people to be Patriots fans, at what point do you cut the cord on Mayo?
02:14And I think, honestly, if it's not happening in the season with Kraft,
02:18it's not going to happen in the offseason.
02:21Everyone knew, NFL Network, the whole media,
02:23knew that he was kind of a hand-picked coach by Kraft,
02:26and I think he wants to maintain that, whether it be illusion or not,
02:29that he's kind of in charge of the decision-making there.
02:33Yeah, so, Dan, I mean, he came out before theβ
02:35we were talking about the Rodgers game earlier in the show.
02:37He came out before that game on Amazon
02:39and was bragging about how five years ago he knew Mayo was the guy
02:42and on the trip to Israel, and that was when he wanted to bring him in.
02:46And we know he had in writing a year ahead of time,
02:49perhaps longer than that,
02:50that he was going to be the coach to take over for Bill Belichick.
02:53So that is all about Kraft.
02:54I think, Keith, there's a shift from you on Mayo with the team.
02:59Maybe I'm incorrect.
03:01You've said before, you're fine moving on from Mayo.
03:03I'm fine moving on from Mayo.
03:04Oh, yeah.
03:05Do you think the team will realistically look at it this offseason?
03:08Has it gotten that bad, or is it just still you talking,
03:10not what you think the team will do?
03:11So I think Robert Kraft has to look at it.
03:14I think he really does.
03:16Now, there's a couple things.
03:17One, do you want to be the team, just in general,
03:20that fires your coach after one year?
03:22He was very proud about how he has only hired three coaches in his time,
03:25right?
03:26Yeah.
03:27And he's like, I've been coaching a lot.
03:28I've been on the team for a long time, only had three coaches.
03:31The guy he just fired was here for over 20.
03:34So he kind of took all β you hired Pete Carroll,
03:36he was here for three years, then he was gone.
03:38Made the team worse each year.
03:39And then you got Bill Belichick, who was great for 20 years,
03:42or give or take 20 years.
03:44And now you have this guy, who you love,
03:45and you compare him to choosing a wife.
03:48So I think that is such a strong bond.
03:50I probably still wouldn't bet on him being fired after one year.
03:55I think that Robert Kraft having to go back on so many things that he has said.
03:59However, you have to worry about damaging the β
04:01I think the caller's right about that, though.
04:03You don't want to look panicky and you want to be the patient,
04:06owner, and all these things, and that's fine.
04:08But now you're staring down the barrel of damaging your brand.
04:12And bringing back Mayo has the potential to do that.
04:15That's why I think β I think he's going to look at it this offseason.
04:18It would not shock me at all if Mayo is fired.
04:20Do you think him not making the Hall of Fame has any impact on this decision?
04:24Like positive, negative, or no?
04:28Because I wonder if he's just like β
04:29If he was going into the Hall of Fame, would that make him,
04:31oh, I'm this magnanimous guy and I'm patient and I take my time?
04:35Or maybe just like less of a push to get your team super relevant again.
04:38I see. Good point.
04:40I wonder if he's like, man, if I can somehow β
04:42If I had to pick one or the other.
04:43I don't know how much of a difference it makes,
04:44but if I had to pick one or the other,
04:45I'd say it makes him more likely to make a rash decision.
04:48Yeah, I think so too.
04:49I think just the way β it's obviously very important to him
04:53and missed it once again.
04:55And, oh, by the way, his team might be picking in the top three again.
04:59And so would you rather be on primetime all the time and showing you?
05:03And every time they show the owner's box for 20 years,
05:06it was usually celebrating another conference championship,
05:09Super Bowl victory, whatever.
05:11Now every time they show him and Jonathan in the box, it's,
05:13oh, you're down 21-0.
05:15Oh, you're down 28-0.
05:16Oh, your team just turned it over.
05:18Oh, another penalty.
05:19Like you're overseeing this horrible operation right now.
05:23So I think the need to see it turn around I think is probably heightened.
05:27Let's go to Matt in Rhode Island.
05:28Hello, Matt.
05:30Hey, what's up, guys?
05:31I wouldn't see Mayo getting fired anytime soon.
05:34He's up in Bob Craft's office last year instead of at coaches' meetings.
05:37But if you wanted to make a calendar, Steve, I would put this number one.
05:40When asked about Drake May or something, he actually said,
05:43well, if we won yesterday's game, the whole narrative would change.
05:47If you won yesterday's game, like you played in the NFL.
05:50They're so close.
05:51They're super close.
05:52If I hit Mega Millions tomorrow, my narrative changes too.
05:54I'm probably closer than winning that game.
05:57That's pretty scary.
05:58Yeah, that is β
05:59The narrative does change.
06:00Have they just pulled that one out?
06:02Have they won that game?
06:03Things are different.
06:04Yeah, if they won that game, I would feel better about it.
06:06Yeah, the narrative would be very different.
06:08At no point in that game did you feel like they were going to win it.
06:11At no point.
06:13Well, I mean, maybe a minute and a half in.
06:15The Dolphins didn't score in the first quarter.
06:17You wanted them to go for it on the opening fourth and short, right?
06:19I did.
06:20I think the mentality of this team should be aggressive.
06:22Be aggressive.
06:23Believe in your players.
06:25And oh, by the way, seems like Alex Van Pelt actually has some decent plays.
06:29The two-point conversion.
06:30Nice play.
06:31Pretty slick little play.
06:32Well, the double pass.
06:34Great double pass.
06:35Yeah, the double pass not so much, Keith.
06:36Oh, yeah.
06:37The two-point conversion was a good play.
06:38They just had the wrong guy.
06:39Not to talk about my athleticism, but I can't not throw it as far as Kendrick Bourne.
06:44That was a horrible throw.
06:46That was a wounded duck of a throw.
06:47What was that?
06:48I don't know.
06:49Don't you have to β
06:50I didn't think Romandre gave it a great effort, by the way.
06:52So Alex Van Pelt β
06:54Like bend at the knees a little bit.
06:56Like he just kind of bent over like my grandfather would bend over for that thing.
06:59Alex Van Pelt didn't know that Marcus Jones could play offense, right?
07:02Correct.
07:03Do you think he ran through his wide receivers and were like,
07:05Hey, have any of you guys thrown?
07:07Can any of you guys throw?
07:09Because like Edelman was an obvious one.
07:10Edelman could throw.
07:11He could throw darts.
07:12Bourne has thrown.
07:13I thought Bourne has been okay when he's thrown him in the past.
07:15That was a brutal β
07:16That was a duck.
07:17That was really bad.
07:18Maybe they don't have anybody else who can do it.
07:20I feel like Bourne has done it and done well with it.
07:22I could be completely off base with that.
07:24All right, let me see if he's thrown.
07:25He has thrown one pass in 2021.
07:28That's it?
07:29A 25-yard touchdown.
07:30Oh, a 25-yard touchdown.
07:31Yeah, I mean he's got a perfect quarterback right there.
07:34How open must that guy have been?
07:36I don't remember that play, but it was in the 2021 season
07:38when things were actually going pretty well.
07:40So that's only his second career pass attempt.
07:42Okay, so me saying I remember, like I couldn't pinpoint that one.
07:45I don't remember.
07:46That was a horrible throw.
07:47That was like the guy was like, Hey, maybe take the glove off.
07:49Like he didn't really seem to have a grip on it.
07:52He kind of like pushed it.
07:53Like you can zip it over there a little bit more if you want.
07:55Can I tell you, I'm not the biggest Bill Simmons guy,
07:57but I have been enjoying Bill Simmons just eviscerating the Patriots
08:01every Sunday.
08:02Oh, yeah.
08:03So I agree with him.
08:04Are you going to talk about just how soft the play calling is?
08:06He says this Pats game is indescribable.
08:08It's like a 2024 greatest hits compilation of all the bad coaching,
08:12dumb plays, scared coaching, and inexplicable penalties this year.
08:17This team is getting worse.
08:18Kraft will do nothing and bring everyone back.
08:21No way he pays two coaches.
08:22It's how he finishes that.
08:23But like Simmons is eviscerating them every Sunday is pretty entertaining.
08:27I think he's spot on too about the scared coaching.
08:29Like I would not.
08:30Every team is the same.
08:31So if your team has, you know,
08:33is fighting for a playoff spot and it's a scoreless game and you want to
08:36play field position, I get it.
08:38I'm not, you know, I'm not.
08:39Well, who was it?
08:40Brandon Staley.
08:41Like I'm not going for it on every single fourth.
08:43Yeah.
08:44I mean, Campbell even does that.
08:45But for this team, why not fourth in a yard?
08:49And you have Drake may give them a little confidence.
08:51Your defense isn't stopping anybody.
08:53Anyway, give the dolphins the ball at the 20, 30, 40, 50.
08:57They're probably going to move down the field and score.
08:58So I think they should overall go for it a lot more now,
09:02fourth and 16 or whatever, like, yeah, they're a little bit different,
09:05but fourth and ones and twos overall is should be going for it.
09:09Worst parts of the game yesterday.
09:10You could jump in.
09:11That double pass was down there.
09:126, 1, 7, 7, 7, 9, 7, 93, 7.
09:15What does that loss do to draw Mayo's job security?
09:20Bill Simmons thinks there's no chance that craft moves on from.
09:23They're just going to run it back.
09:24Do you agree or disagree?
09:25Would that be the right move?
