Pat and Matt discuss the Patriots game in Chicago this week, and the matchup between the 1st and 3rd overall picks in this past year's draft
Transcript
00:00:00You're listening to the Patriot Nation podcast.
00:00:30All right, welcome to another edition of the Patriot Nation podcast.
00:00:40As always, your guy Pat Lane here with my man Matt St. Jean.
00:00:44And Matt, the Patriots are going to Chicago this week.
00:00:49And you know, it's not, well, after losing to Tennessee, I mean, who the hell knows?
00:00:55But you know, maybe it's not as unwinnable of a game as we thought it might be a few
00:01:01weeks ago.
00:01:02No, I mean, this is a Chicago team that is not very good.
00:01:09I do think one of the things I kind of noticed is that the spread for this six points feels
00:01:14like the spread for almost every Patriots game has been six or seven points, which means
00:01:18that it kind of doesn't matter who we play.
00:01:20The better think it's probably about a touchdown spread.
00:01:24Like I think that's what the Bengals for week one.
00:01:27That's what the Bears are here.
00:01:28I don't think those teams are really that close to the same footing now.
00:01:33Maybe they are.
00:01:34Well, Tennessee was plus was minus three and a half to the Patriots, plus three and a half
00:01:38covered that one, baby.
00:01:40Yeah.
00:01:41But.
00:01:42But yes, you're right.
00:01:44In a normal game, it's it's about six or seven points to pretty much everyone.
00:01:49And just like, all right, that like every game is winnable, but the Pat's got to play
00:01:54a good game.
00:01:55You have a team has to play a bad one and the Bears have played plenty of bad games
00:01:58this year.
00:01:59So they're going to have a chance.
00:02:00Yep, that's for sure.
00:02:01That's for sure.
00:02:03It's really interesting.
00:02:04And so we're going to get into this.
00:02:06There's kind of a litany of things to talk about on the Patriots side of the football
00:02:09and also on the Bears side of the ball as well.
00:02:12Just interesting kind of takes on both sides when you look at kind of what's going on and
00:02:19what the general demeanor is of of the team and I think the franchise as well.
00:02:23But you know, I think I don't want to start there.
00:02:28So I was going to talk about the uniforms, but you'll go off on a 10 minute tangent about
00:02:31the Patriots uniform.
00:02:32So let's not do that.
00:02:33Let's let's first start with Mike on when I just I don't understand what the hell the
00:02:40Patriots are doing.
00:02:41So for those of you that don't know, Mike, I'm when it was working at left guard today
00:02:47on Thursday.
00:02:49No idea.
00:02:50Just I have no clue why they're doing it.
00:02:53Doug Cide.
00:02:54Here's Doug Cides breakdown of what the Patriots have done with Mike on when of this year and
00:03:00OTAs is working at right tackle by the end of many camp.
00:03:03He was at right guard by the end of training camp.
00:03:05He was back at right tackle by week five.
00:03:07He was at right guard for week seven.
00:03:09He was at right tackle for week eight.
00:03:11He was at right guard for week nine.
00:03:14He was back at right tackle and midway through week nine.
00:03:17Lady Robinson got benched, and so he moved back to right guard.
00:03:20And now leading up to week 10, he's working in at left at left guard.
00:03:26What the hell are we doing?
00:03:27Like, what are we doing?
00:03:29He's your best offensive lineman.
00:03:30Put him at right guard, leave him there and figure out everything else.
00:03:34It just this is stupid.
00:03:36Yeah, I see the logic on paper.
00:03:40The logic on paper is that Michael Jordan has really regressed the last two weeks as
00:03:46a pass blocker at left guard, and he's kind of become one of your weakest links on the
00:03:54line very quickly here because he can't run block at all.
00:03:59And the idea of swapping him out from icon when you probably instantly makes left guard
00:04:06fit.
00:04:07Right.
00:04:08But the problem is, and the other part of this, I think they want Laden Robinson to
00:04:11play.
00:04:12Right.
00:04:13I want to let him develop and let him play at right guard because, like, if they if the
00:04:17guys are good at what they do, I wonder what left guard Cole Strange at center Laden Robinson
00:04:23at right guard.
00:04:24It can make sense in theory.
00:04:26The problem isn't the theory.
00:04:28The problem is in practice, you might go when it is a guy who I don't think likes being
00:04:33moved around, who's gotten moved around a lot.
00:04:35Now you're asking him to mirror everything he's doing at guard over to the left side.
00:04:40If it if he's OK with it and if it works, sure.
00:04:46But it's a gamble because there's a situation here where you move him to left guard and
00:04:51he it just doesn't work for him.
00:04:53They played in their twenty twenty one, I think.
00:04:55Yeah.
00:04:56And when I ended up playing, he was awful and he was much better on the right side.
00:05:02If you play like that and Laden Robinson still is what Laden Robinson has been at right
00:05:06guard now, all three spots in the middle of your line are weak links and you may have
00:05:12managed to piss off the best player on your offensive line.
00:05:16You just signed to a huge extension.
00:05:18Yeah.
00:05:19It's clear that this coaching staff, this offensive line coach has a lot of faith in
00:05:24being able to switch players from one side to the other.
00:05:28They said that with Kate Wallace.
00:05:29They said that when she was a core four, we've seen them asking guards to switch.
00:05:33We've seen it with other tackles like this is something that they believe in.
00:05:39Hasn't worked.
00:05:40It worked.
00:05:41My best talents that they have tried it with so many.
00:05:47I will give them a tiny, tiny bit of benefit of the doubt going into this game.
00:05:52But man, is this risky?
00:05:54And if it doesn't work, like this is how you get fired after one year, a hundred percent.
00:06:01And that's really what it comes down to is that at a certain point, you just got to pick
00:06:06something.
00:06:07Right.
00:06:08You can't just start throwing stuff against the wall and see what sticks.
00:06:12And really what, what's frustrating is that you just feel like it's almost not out of
00:06:18necessity anymore.
00:06:20Like, okay, maybe Michael Jordan has regressed.
00:06:23Right.
00:06:25Maybe they're seeing it in practice and they're like, we don't love what we've seen from Michael
00:06:27Jordan.
00:06:28Fine.
00:06:29And, and I get that.
00:06:31And I'm okay with that.
00:06:32I understand.
00:06:33But at the same time, it's like, well, at a certain point, you just got to let the guys
00:06:39play and if left guard is a problem for you, well, then you should have traded for someone
00:06:47at the trade deadline, or you should sign some free agent off the street, or you should
00:06:51put someone there.
00:06:53But if my guy, when he was going to play, okay, at right guard, he's been good at right
00:06:56guard.
00:06:57Right.
00:06:58And your right tackle is going to be fine.
00:07:01I don't know if your right tackle is great, but it doesn't matter.
00:07:05They don't have to be great.
00:07:08And that's the part of it that like, I just, I don't understand what they're doing.
00:07:14You went from having a consistent line and in week eight and looking pretty good to then
00:07:20going to week nine and looking like crap.
00:07:24And I don't know, is that because they moved on when we're back to right guard, right back
00:07:28to right tackle and put Layden Robinson in at right guard.
00:07:31And by the time they made the switch back to it, what are you doing?
00:07:35Just leave, leave the lineup at the way it is and stop messing with it.
00:07:40Right.
00:07:41And let them kind of gel a little bit and see if they can improve as they go along.
00:07:47I just, it makes absolutely no sense that they're doing and just give the guys some
00:07:53continuity and they're not doing that.
00:07:55And that's, it's, it's really frustrating and you're totally right.
00:07:58Like they look like they're incompetent right now by continuing to do this.
00:08:03Like it's again, like they, there was a point where the reason why the line wasn't cohesive
00:08:10was because of injuries.
00:08:11Now we're kind of at the point where they are the ones that keep meddling.
00:08:14Yes.
00:08:16Again, if it works great, but this kind of feels like if this one doesn't work, cause
00:08:24it's, it's probably, I think hopefully it's going to be a multi-week thing.
00:08:29You hope it's good enough this week that you can stick with it and try to make it work.
00:08:33Cause that's the thing.
00:08:34Like if it's, if, if on one, he was suddenly good at left guard now and this isn't an issue.
00:08:38Okay.
00:08:39Now you can get him on the field and strange and Layden Robinson, right?
00:08:44In theory, that's your interior and it's set.
00:08:47So I get like, I think the theory of it makes sense.
00:08:50You're just, you know, risking a lot to do it.
00:08:52And I mean, Cole strange isn't back yet.
00:08:54None of those, none of the injured players, not just that, but like, haven't you seen
00:09:00enough, enough related Robinson at right guard that, you know, he's not the guy.
00:09:04Yeah.
00:09:05I'm surprised how much they want to get him on the field.
00:09:08Maybe he has looked better in practice and he just had a couple of bad reps against Jeffrey
00:09:11Simmons last week and they want to get them out there to work more.
00:09:15Um, man, Michael Jordan has been rough.
00:09:19I don't know if Layden Robinson has been any better.
00:09:22I think he has been worse still.
00:09:25So, uh, and I get wanting to, like, it's, I get wanting to play the young guys cause
00:09:30you want to develop them.
00:09:31They have to play to develop, but there was also kind of a, a bar that you have to clear
00:09:36where if you can't clear it, putting you out on the field, isn't going to help you at all.
00:09:42From what we've seen of Layden Robinson, I think he's been under that bar.
00:09:46I think so.
00:09:47I certainly think so.
00:09:49I do know.
00:09:50Look, I mean, that's like maybe because may is more mobile.
00:09:52They feel like they can be flexible with the offensive line and try to move these things
00:09:56around and make it work.
00:09:57Cause they're less worried about the past protection side.
00:09:59Like he's made their past protection look better.
00:10:01Well, and the only other thing that I can think of is that they look at it and just
00:10:06say, we can't run the ball at all.
00:10:09And the reason we can't run the ball is because the off the, the run blocking.
00:10:15And so on when it would make the left guard better, you know, on when it was theoretically
00:10:20right on when you and Layden Robinson are your two best run blocking guards.
00:10:25Right.
00:10:26And so moving on when it's a left guard allows you to play both of those guys at, you know,
00:10:32at the guard positions.
00:10:33I can see the theory, but again, it's like, why are we, what, why are we doing that?
00:10:40You know, and that's, and that's part of the problem now here's the other issue.
00:10:44Right.
00:10:44And I know that, you know, we talk about, Hey, you know, this is a fireable thing and
00:10:49you could get fired for this and all this other stuff, but like at the same time, and
00:10:52people screaming the comments about that, AVP is way over his head and, and Wolf and
00:10:57Mayo and so on and so forth, Drake may is doing some, I mean, he's putting up numbers
00:11:03that we've never seen anyone in the league do before ever.
00:11:10Right.
00:11:11And so when you stop and look at it, there's two possibilities.
00:11:17Drake may is the greatest quarterback of all time and he's doing it on his own in
00:11:19spite of his coaching or with very limited weapons, very limited weapons.
00:11:30Okay.
00:11:31Um, you know, yes.
00:11:33Oh man, mom, you're not the only one.
00:11:34So that's why I said in the comments, but you're right.
00:11:36You know, your point, you want to, but with very limited weapons,
00:11:41he's still looking pretty good.
00:11:43And so I think part of that, you have to give the coaching staff.
00:11:48Now, again, does that mean the coaching staff can't be better?
00:11:50Of course the coaching staff can be better, but I think at times the coaching staff
00:11:54has put him in pretty good positions to be successful.
00:11:57I think that's kind of hard to argue against when you see the numbers.
00:12:01Okay.
00:12:03Yeah.
00:12:03Yeah.
00:12:04Uh, I'm, uh, I'm anxious about that.
00:12:07We're going to end up seeing this.
00:12:14You're breaking up on us.
00:12:15Oh boy.
00:12:18No boy.
00:12:20Yeah, kind of.
00:12:22You're in and out.
00:12:27I don't know what's going on.
00:12:28We need the, uh, we need the SpongeBob technical difficulties, uh, a meme on
00:12:33the screen right now.
00:12:35Um, yikes.
00:12:38Okay.
00:12:39So anyways, you keep going.
00:12:41Yeah.
00:12:41So, so the offensive line and look again, I'm not, I haven't been happy with what
00:12:47I've gotten from the coaches.
00:12:48And I think it's reasonable to argue that the coaches have been, have been rough.
00:12:54And I don't blame anyone for that at all.
00:12:57Right.
00:12:58I also think, um, for me at least that it's hard to argue that they have put
00:13:04him in position to be successful at times because the numbers he's putting
00:13:07up are historic, right?
00:13:10And so yes, he's had to do it all on his own, right?
00:13:13They haven't been able to run the ball.
00:13:15And that's part of that, of course, is scheme.
00:13:17And part of that is just the players not being able to execute.
00:13:19Um, you know, but you almost wonder too, like, should we have a full
00:13:25back in there trying to, you know, open some holes or whatever?
00:13:29I don't know what the right answer is, but, um, what they're doing right
00:13:33now, running the ball, isn't working, what they're doing, passing
00:13:35the ball is working pretty well.
00:13:37Um, and so, you know, and again, maybe shoot, maybe Drake is that good.
00:13:45Maybe Drake may is that good that he's overcoming the issues that he
00:13:50has with the coaching staff.
00:13:51Right.
00:13:52And I mean, if that's the case, Holy crap.
00:13:55Like we're talking about a top three quarterback in the NFL already.
00:14:00Um, but I just, I don't see that that's the case yet.
00:14:05Maybe you'll prove me wrong.
00:14:06Um, but I don't see it this case yet, but again, if you keep moving the
00:14:09offensive line around like this and you keep, you know, uh, going back and
00:14:18forth like this and stuff like that, I just, it's, it's definitely a problem.
00:14:23It's definitely a problem.
00:14:25And again, I don't know if it's a fireable offense necessarily, but it
00:14:29certainly could be, um, by the end of the year, hopefully I'm back and you're
00:14:35able to see and hear me this time.
00:14:37I can, yes, I can hear you a little crackly, but you're there.
00:14:41Okay.
00:14:41I don't know.
00:14:41What is it?
00:14:42I I'm having all kinds of technical difficulties.
00:14:44Um, it's been the headphones, it's been the mic, it's been the power cord.
00:14:49It's been apparently now the wifi all in the last week.
00:14:53So I don't know what's going on there.
00:14:55This laptop has been completely fine before this week.
00:14:58Um, but yeah, no, I, I think, oh, it's, we just got to hope that it works.
00:15:04Like the other, the devil's advocate part of this is that no combination that they
00:15:10have thrown out there so far has been so good that you say, oh, let's stick with
00:15:14that if, when, when it was like that, to me, the big thing is if on, when it was
00:15:18on board with this, he's on board with it.
00:15:21If it, if he thinks he can play left guard, he's bought into the idea of him
00:15:25playing left guard and he can play it at a high level, like as well as he can play
00:15:32a bright guard, then I don't necessarily have an issue with this.
00:15:36I'm just skeptical about that from what we've seen in the past.
00:15:40True.
00:15:41That's a great point.
00:15:42By the way, old man, old man, mom says that, uh, we got to do go fund me for you
00:15:46to, uh, to get you some new material.
00:15:51Uh, but you know, but anyways, I look, I think that, and I don't want to take
00:15:55anything away from Drake May.
00:15:56I'm not trying to take anything away from Drake May.
00:15:58I'm really not because Drake May has been incredible and I am so happy that he is
00:16:03And I am so happy that he is our quarterback.
00:16:06Right.
00:16:08Um, but he's four starts in, right?
00:16:11So like, it's a long way to go before we start, you know, calling him a hall
00:16:15of famer or anything else like that.
00:16:16And so that's, that's the questioning for me where I look at it and say like,
00:16:21yeah, I don't know, like, is it, you know, are the coaches actually putting him
00:16:26in a better position than we realized?
00:16:28So anyways, we will see.
00:16:29I mean, I don't know.
00:16:31Um, I don't know what the, uh, what the deal is, by the way.
00:16:35Uh, the Baltimore Ravens just challenged a two yard catch on first down nearly
00:16:41goal line with 10 minutes left to go in the first quarter, by the way, it was
00:16:47unsuccessful, just like, I think, I think Harbaugh was like, I don't need all
00:16:54these challenges.
00:16:54What am I doing?
00:16:55The one way, you know, and it was pretty, I didn't have some fun with it.
00:16:58You know, as bad as, as bad as Mayo has been, come on now.
00:17:01Um, so we'll see.
00:17:03You know, I just think, I think too, like, you know, we need to cut the coaching
00:17:08stack up as coaching staff, a little bit of slack, which that I understand that I
00:17:13agree with, but at the same time, at a certain point, you just have to, we can't
00:17:20wait, you know, like you've got to figure it out.
00:17:23And if you can't figure it out, then you're not the guy and we have to move on
00:17:26from here.
00:17:27It's just the way it goes.
00:17:28When I think one of the, one of the spots you should look is like what
00:17:31the Cardinals did last year, when they only won like three, four games, four
00:17:36games, I think five, I think five, no, four, four.
00:17:39You're right.
00:17:39They had the same record as the Patriots.
00:17:41Yeah.
00:17:42A lot of that came at the end of the year.
00:17:44A lot of that came because there was clear improvement throughout the year.
00:17:47Yep.
00:17:47Even though they didn't win a lot, it was clear that, all right, there's something
00:17:50here, they're trending in the right direction.
00:17:53So all year, that's what you want to see from new England.
00:17:55And, you know, we're past halfway through the year.
00:17:58So we're at the point where if they're making moves like this, you expect
00:18:03improvement out of it.
00:18:04You, the line should look better this Sunday than it did last Sunday.
00:18:09If it doesn't, then I seriously question why you're making the move.
00:18:12Cause you've been working with these guys all year.
00:18:14That's correct.
00:18:15That is absolutely correct.
00:18:17Yep.
00:18:18Yeah.
00:18:18It doesn't need to be good.
00:18:19Like it's, but you've got to, they are throwing everything.
00:18:25No, clearly.
00:18:26Yeah.
00:18:27Yeah.
00:18:27And that's, and I understand you're throwing everything at the wall.
00:18:29I get that.
00:18:30Right.
00:18:31But like, you got to have the guys play better.
00:18:33Right.
00:18:34And honestly, then it gets down to, well, they're not playing better.
00:18:39Well, so what, like at a certain point, you just have to let the guys play
00:18:45because you just can't do anything else about it.
00:18:48Right.
00:18:48And that's, and that's what it comes down to is that like, okay, we can move, you
00:18:52know, we can move on one of the left guard and we can put Leighton Robinson
00:18:55back at right guard, but like taking out Michael Jordan and put it in Leighton
00:19:00Robinson and, you know, putting Mike on one of the left guard, does that make
00:19:03the Patriots better?
00:19:04Like, I don't know.
00:19:05Sure.
00:19:05Maybe you're not happy with the way Michael Jordan's been playing, but that
00:19:08doesn't necessarily mean that the right option is to Benjam and shuffle
00:19:12the entire offensive line.
00:19:13And so like, that's the stuff where you question the decision
00:19:18making of the, of the coaching staff.
00:19:19And so, um, it's frustrating.
00:19:23The other part of this is going to be the evaluative part, you know,
00:19:26Leighton Robinson was the guy that drafted this year.
00:19:28So far, he has not been able to be really significant contributor in
00:19:32any way, anything positive they've done.
00:19:36It's also, you know, the part of this is I, you, what you would say is leave
00:19:40on one at right guard and put Leighton Robinson at left guard.
00:19:43It's pretty clear.
00:19:43They don't think Robinson can move.
00:19:45They think I'll win.
00:19:45It was easier to move here.
00:19:48Right.
00:19:48Which means you're telling me you drafted a guy who can only like, you
00:19:52can only play right guard, you drafted him and you just signed a guy like
00:19:56you're, there's a chance here that the best player in offensive line was a guy
00:20:00who is your right guard or right tackle.
00:20:02I'm like, Oh, I knew.
00:20:03And they drafted guys who might only be a right guard and a right
00:20:06tackle in the draft this year.
00:20:07Yeah.
00:20:08Right.
00:20:09Makes me question the way you're evaluating everything.
00:20:12Totally true.
00:20:12That I agree with.
00:20:13Uh, also one, just one quick thing, uh, old man, mom mentioned that, um, just
00:20:19about Vrabel coming in to help out.
00:20:22I had kind of mentioned this before as well, that I thought, you know,
00:20:24Vrabel coming in, um, you know, might not be the best idea or might, might've
00:20:30been a good idea just to give Mayo someone the problem is if we were at this
00:20:36point right now, let's just say we're in the same exact spot, two and seven.
00:20:42Ups and downs in the coaching staff, young coach, learning to learn the
00:20:45ropes, what would the entire conversation be?
00:20:50The whole conversation would be Mike Vrabel's in the building.
00:20:54He's in the building already.
00:20:55Just fire Mayo and have Vrabel be the guy to take over.
00:20:59That would be the conversation on every single sports show
00:21:02in Boston, 20 hours a week.
00:21:05And it's just like, well, there's just, we just, one of those, you just can't do it.
00:21:11Right.
00:21:11And Vrabel does have a consulting job with Cleveland that he got, um, you know,
00:21:15kind of halfway through the year.
00:21:16But again, Stefanski is a guy that I thought was, you know, and maybe he'll
00:21:20end up getting fired for, I can't imagine when I'm firing him for playing to Sean
00:21:23Watson, cause he didn't have a choice in that matter.
00:21:25Um, maybe he'll end up getting fired this year.
00:21:28I don't know.
00:21:29Um, but you know, it's one of those issues for me that, you know, I, I look
00:21:34at it cause I did think that initially, but someone had mentioned it, guy went to
00:21:38go to the game with Jack mentioned it, that like, if Vrabel were the guy, if
00:21:41Vrabel were here, people would be like, well, what the hell are we doing?
00:21:45Like, why is Vrabel not the head coach in Mayo is like, what are we talking about?
00:21:48And so I think that that was one of those things that it was done intentionally
00:21:53to have young guys that can grow together.
00:21:56Um, I do think they should have brought someone in that had some experience
00:21:59who that would have been.
00:22:00I don't know, but cause you can't just be all young guys, uh, doing stuff.
00:22:05Unless all of those young guys are guys like Sean McVay that are pushing the
00:22:11envelope that are doing crazy things that are designed, you know, Ben Johnson
00:22:15and these other guys that are, that are like designing crazy plays and having
00:22:21fun and doing all this crazy stuff.
00:22:23You're talking about young guys with that, like that, that I can do.
00:22:26But if you're talking about young guys that are like by the book, and this
00:22:29is how we're going to do it, I'm going to run the West coast offense.
00:22:31And we're going this, we're going to like, you gotta have some
00:22:34experience in the, uh, in the coaching room.
00:22:36And, and I know that a lot of people didn't want the OC job, but
00:22:38that doesn't matter, you know?
00:22:41Yeah.
00:22:41And I don't, my thing with the whole variable thing is like, I kind of thought
00:22:46he was a little bit overrated as a head coach.
00:22:48I thought he was a good culture guy.
00:22:51Yeah.
00:22:51Look with that Tennessee offense turned into by the time he was done there.
00:22:55Right.
00:22:55Like that's, this has, he was not in a good spot.
00:22:58A lot of that's also the GM for people.
00:23:01I didn't think that a lot to elevate.
00:23:03Um, so, you know, I think it's to me, I didn't, I had no issue with the Mayo thing.
00:23:10I do think, you know, hypothetical world, it becomes very clear by the end of this
00:23:14year, this coaching staff and this GM, not the guy I would prefer clean house,
00:23:21entirely external people, no ties to.
00:23:26Um, yeah, don't, don't keep, don't keep hiring Patriots guys.
00:23:30Get something entirely new, fresh from outside and go from there.
00:23:35And I don't really care that much about the head coaching experience.
00:23:39So you guys who are young, become good head coaches all the time.
00:23:43Um, you know, I think it's just a judgment call.
00:23:47You have to guess that this guy's going to be good.
00:23:49Sometimes those guys used to be head coaches.
00:23:51Sometimes they didn't.
00:23:52Sometimes it's the first time it's always going to be a risk.
00:23:55So, yeah.
00:23:57Yeah.
00:23:58So we'll see lots of, lots of work to do.
00:23:59And I think Tyler Hughes is another guy that's on the chopping block because, you
00:24:04know, not only have we seen nothing from the, from the receivers to me, they've
00:24:07regressed, right?
00:24:08Jalen Polk looked like the best receiver.
00:24:11Um, in the room, right.
00:24:14During training camp.
00:24:14And now he can't run a runner, catch a pass.
00:24:17Right.
00:24:17And so, and not only can I run a runner, catch a pass, but he's talking on social
00:24:21media and, you know, just, just seems like an altogether guy that, you know, I don't
00:24:29know, I don't know.
00:24:31I don't, you know, I don't love that.
00:24:34Um, and so you kind of have to wonder, like, are these guys regressing?
00:24:39Are you not getting enough out of Tyler Hughes as your wide receiver coach or
00:24:43take on, take one on a word, of course, the assistant there, you know, and do
00:24:47you have to make a change there?
00:24:48Right.
00:24:48Not sure, but you know, but that's, I think to me, at least a fair question.
00:24:53Um, so we'll see a lot of, you know, a lot of things to shake out the end of the year.
00:24:59We've had a lot of change with the personnel, with the position coaches on
00:25:04this team for a while now, and I'm not opposed to keep changing it and keep
00:25:08shuffling the deck until you get it right.
00:25:10But there is a part of it, you know, but we keep talking about them
00:25:11shuffling the offensive line.
00:25:13Right.
00:25:13And how, how that's tough.
00:25:15Yeah.
00:25:16Sometimes, you know, you just got to say, Hey, we've liked these
00:25:18coaches when we hired them.
00:25:19It's not great right now, but let's give them another year and
00:25:22see if year two looks better.
00:25:25Um, he was, he was weird hired me cause he was the guy who stayed in the
00:25:30building for, and then you're bringing him back, right?
00:25:35He only left for a year, I think.
00:25:37Um, yeah, he was gone for a year or two.
00:25:40Yep.
00:25:41And we're obviously worked with Polk.
00:25:44They thought he thought very highly of Polk, right.
00:25:47And I know multiple people, including TD say that he was the third best
00:25:50receiver on their roster kind of seems like his position coach last year
00:25:54didn't, didn't agree.
00:25:56Um, but you know, I mean, what would his position coach know?
00:26:00I'm sure TD knows better than the guy that coached him last year at college.
00:26:03So, you know, I mean, I don't know, it's just kind of interesting.
00:26:07Yeah.
00:26:07So do we want to do, uh, our first ad break and then come back,
00:26:13talk about this game this week.
00:26:14Yeah.
00:26:15I like that.
00:26:15I like that.
00:26:15Let's do that and, uh, and go from there.
00:26:17So, all right.
00:26:18This of course, ad is about price picks.
00:26:20Price picks is the best place to get real money sports action with over
00:26:2310 million members and billions of dollars in award winnings.
00:26:27Price picks has made daily fantasy sports accessible to all.
00:26:29You just pick more or less on at least two players for a shot to win up to
00:26:33100 times your cash, run your game all season long on price picks.
00:26:40As I said, you can win up to 100 times your money with as little as four.
00:26:45That's right for correct picks and they put their members first.
00:26:50And so all withdrawals are fast, safe, and secure.
00:26:54When my picks hit, I can get my money in as quickly as five minutes.
00:26:59And they're now offering Venmo for deposits and withdrawals, which
00:27:04is a really, really nice thing.
00:27:06Um, so my lineup this week, I'm going with a Thursday night game.
00:27:11So if you listen to this on Friday, it's already passed.
00:27:13Um, but that's okay.
00:27:14Thursday night, I'm going with Derek Henry for more than 0.5
00:27:18rushing or receiving touchdowns.
00:27:20I'm additionally going with Hunter Henry for more than 42 and a half receiving
00:27:25yards and scary Terry McLaurin for more than 58 and a half receiving yards.
00:27:31So if you're listening to this after Thursday, well, I guess the
00:27:34Thursday games already started.
00:27:35So you probably can't do the Derek Henry one, but you can still play the
00:27:38Hunter Henry and Terry McLaurin one, uh, as well, if you want to
00:27:41get in on the action with me.
00:27:44What you're going to do is you're going to download the app price picks today.
00:27:47You're going to put it, the promo code C L N S.
00:27:50And when you play a $5 lineup, you're going to get $50 instantly.
00:27:56Okay.
00:27:56Again, download the app price picks, put in the promo code CLNS.
00:28:00And when you play your first $5 lineup, you're going to get a $50.
00:28:04You're going to get $50 instantly.
00:28:06You do not have to win your first lineup.
00:28:08You just have to play it.
00:28:10Price picks run your game.
00:28:16All right.
00:28:16So, uh, so yeah, so there we go.
00:28:19All right.
00:28:20Now, listen, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, as bad as things
00:28:26have been for the Patriots and things have been bad for the Patriots, right?
00:28:30We don't know if the coaching staff is the right coaching staff.
00:28:34You know, we're not, we're just not sure if he's the right guy.
00:28:38I get it.
00:28:39Totally understand.
00:28:41It could be worse.
00:28:43And how could it be worse?
00:28:44It could be worse.
00:28:46If you were the Chicago bears, the last three quarterbacks, the Chicago
00:28:53bears have drafted in the top 10.
00:28:56That's right.
00:28:57Three quarterbacks they've drafted in the top 10 have all been drafted.
00:29:02And I would imagine this is going to have, I'm lumping Caleb Williams in
00:29:06with the other two, because it just seems like that's going to be the case.
00:29:10Have all been drafted in the final year of the current head coaches tenure.
00:29:17So you draft a quarterback in the top 10, right?
00:29:23You then fire your coach the next year.
00:29:26Two of those guys, one of those guys was taken at what three overall.
00:29:32And now one of those guys is taking it one overall and just
00:29:35the fields are taking a 10 overall.
00:29:37It is completely insane, complete insanity that you would look at what
00:29:45happened with Matt Nagy and think, nope, we're doing the right thing by
00:29:51keeping Matt Ibraflus for another year.
00:29:53You knew he wasn't the guy, you knew it.
00:29:58Every sign pointed.
00:29:59He wasn't the guy you had the number one pick, you loaded up on
00:30:03you loaded up on players and you kept the coach and now your team is a flaming
00:30:10hot disaster and you almost have no choice, but to fire your head coach and
00:30:17your brand new number one overall pick sure fire superstar quarterback looks
00:30:23like garbage all of a sudden because the coaching staff around him is terrible.
00:30:27And it's taking out the legs and has lost a locker room.
00:30:31It is a complete disaster over there.
00:30:35Well, not just, you know, I think I can understand why someone would buy into,
00:30:41you know, giving Matt Ibraflus loose another chance here.
00:30:45I don't know why you do it in this circumstance.
00:30:47Right.
00:30:48This is your, you're at a reset point with your organization and you have the
00:30:54number one pick and you're taking a new quarterback and if there's any doubt
00:30:59about the coach you have, don't keep them.
00:31:03This is an inflection point.
00:31:05Go out and get someone.
00:31:06If there's doubt, then, then you're setting yourself up for, if that
00:31:10doubt's realized you're one, well, you just drafted a quarterback and now
00:31:14you're swishing out the coach already.
00:31:16That's what you, and you have willingly walked, knowingly walked into that
00:31:21situation, which the bears have done like three times in a row now with the
00:31:25quarterback that they've drafted high, at least twice in a row.
00:31:29It's three times with their last three head coaches, John Fox, which the last
00:31:33year of his deal with, with Mr.
00:31:35Biscay, Matt Nagy, the last year of his tenure with Justin Fields.
00:31:40And now Matt Ibraflus with Caleb Williams.
00:31:42It's insane.
00:31:44Which, you know, you want to come back to new England here.
00:31:46I think this is one of the reasons the team was 100% correct to
00:31:49move on from bill Belichick.
00:31:50Yes.
00:31:51Love bill.
00:31:51Greatest coach to ever do it.
00:31:53There was legitimate doubt after what we've seen in the last
00:31:55four years, if he still had it.
00:31:58He's also old.
00:31:59You're drafting a quarterback high.
00:32:00That's the point where you move on.
00:32:02That's the natural breaking point.
00:32:04Patriots might not have made the correct move with who they hired out of that.
00:32:10Uh, which we are still figuring out, right?
00:32:12They built an entire organization starting from a natural starting point
00:32:18so that everything could come together.
00:32:20And you're not putting yourself in a spot where, Oh, it doesn't work.
00:32:23We are trying to switch things midstream in a whole bunch of
00:32:26different places at the same time.
00:32:28Uh, I don't get what the bears doing.
00:32:30There's a reason this organization has struggled.
00:32:32Uh, also add on, like, I don't think Keenan Allen has been as good as they
00:32:35thought he was going to be.
00:32:36Romo Dunzey, I think has been banged up.
00:32:38Yeah.
00:32:39DJ Moore, maybe he's checking out, uh, there was, there was a play last week
00:32:48for those who aren't aware where it looked like he just kind of ran off the
00:32:50field in the middle of the play and went and sat on the bench, people have said
00:32:55that it was because he rolled single on the play and took himself out for that
00:32:59reason.
00:33:00Um, I don't know how much I believe that.
00:33:03I think we will see over the coming weeks if there's any validity to that, or if
00:33:08he's just kind of checking out, the offensive line is awful.
00:33:13There, they just can't block anyone.
00:33:15And now it's a little banged up too.
00:33:17So the defense is fine.
00:33:20And that's Matt Eberfluss thing or fifth and points allowed.
00:33:24I think this year and especially against the past, still pretty good defense, but
00:33:29like the rest of this does not look like it's working.
00:33:33It's also their offensive coordinator.
00:33:36Uh, the name is escaping you.
00:33:37They hired the guy from, oh, it's a Matt Walsh.
00:33:40No shame.
00:33:40Waldron from Seattle.
00:33:42Correct.
00:33:43Yep.
00:33:44Did you, do you remember the reaction from one?
00:33:48I believe it was Jackson Smith and Jake.
00:33:50It was JSN.
00:33:51Yeah.
00:33:52Yeah.
00:33:52Yeah.
00:33:53When, when he got hired by the bears, uh, Smith and Jay, but was asked about, you
00:33:59know, what can bears fans expect out of the new offensive coordinator?
00:34:03And it was like the longest pause.
00:34:05And it's basically like, basically like good luck guys, not a ringing endorsement.
00:34:11It's unbelievable.
00:34:12Unbelievable.
00:34:13I mean, that's, you know, so that's, that's what they've done.
00:34:16Right.
00:34:16And, and again, you're in this situation with the bears where we looked at it and
00:34:21said, it's the best situation that a number one quarterback has ever been in.
00:34:24Right.
00:34:25You're drafting a wide receiver in the top 10.
00:34:27You have Keenan Allen.
00:34:28You already had Cole commit.
00:34:30You drafted a right tackle last year in the first, in the first round.
00:34:34Do you feel like the offensive line is pretty good?
00:34:36The defense is, is pretty solid.
00:34:39Right.
00:34:39But it's like, that wasn't the case.
00:34:42Right.
00:34:43And it wasn't the case because you know, I just, it wasn't the case.
00:34:51Unfortunately, the offensive line has been bad.
00:34:54I think what it comes back down to is the head coach and the offensive
00:34:57coaches, it's just, it's tough, you know?
00:35:03So, uh, yeah, I mean, again, and that doesn't mean, by the way, it doesn't
00:35:07mean the Patriots can't beat the bears this weekend.
00:35:08I think the bears are a better team than the Patriots are.
00:35:10Right.
00:35:10And so, um, I certainly think that, you know, you could look at it and say
00:35:15the bears are going to win this game, but I still think longterm that the Patriots
00:35:20are in a better position than the bears are.
00:35:22Right.
00:35:23Um, and again, I'm not sure, but that's how I feel about it at least.
00:35:28Um, and maybe they're both, maybe they'll both fail.
00:35:30I don't know.
00:35:31I just don't love the idea.
00:35:34Look, Trevor Lawrence, same thing.
00:35:35Now, Trevor Lawrence, a little different situation because, um, Urban Meyer was
00:35:39hired right before they drafted Trevor Lawrence.
00:35:41So, okay, fine.
00:35:43But that was a disaster, obviously.
00:35:46Right.
00:35:46As everyone knows.
00:35:47And then it's one of those issues where you had to then go out and say, well,
00:35:52we got to try to fix it now.
00:35:53And they just haven't been able to.
00:35:55Um, and so, you know, I don't know.
00:35:59I don't know.
00:35:59Um, I don't know what the right answer is.
00:36:03So, but to me, if I'm on this train, I would be, I'd be very worried.
00:36:08Say it again.
00:36:11Can you, what do you say?
00:36:12I can hear you now.
00:36:13Yeah.
00:36:13Yep.
00:36:14Okay.
00:36:15Yeah.
00:36:15I got all kinds of stuff.
00:36:16Now my, my microphone dropped.
00:36:19Oh my God, dude.
00:36:20What a mess, dude.
00:36:21Yeah.
00:36:21It's, uh, I don't know what's going on over here.
00:36:26So, so, and, and listen, we have, uh, we're not talking draft yet.
00:36:32I know people are throwing out ideas in the drafts.
00:36:34We were not, we're not talking, we're not talking draft yet.
00:36:37Um, we got a long time to talk to draft.
00:36:40Uh, once December rolls around, we can start talking draft, but, uh, but
00:36:44right now we'll, we'll focus on the games at hand and kind of
00:36:47see what we, what, uh, what happens from there.
00:36:48So, um, for, for this week, a couple of notes on this bears defense,
00:36:54cause I think it's relevant for, uh, they are one of the top five in how
00:37:01much cover three defense they play.
00:37:04Yeah.
00:37:04So think that old Legion of boom, uh, Seahawks type defense.
00:37:11They're good at it.
00:37:12They are, um, they play the most middle of the field, closed defense in the NFL,
00:37:18which means, uh, for those who don't know the two terms that are typically
00:37:23the middle of field closed, middle of field open, middle of field closed
00:37:26means that there is one safety in the middle of the field, deep middle of
00:37:30field open means there are two safeties that are split, so the middle of
00:37:35the field in between them is open.
00:37:37Offenses kind of use those two indicators a lot of the time, especially
00:37:40for receivers who are running option routes.
00:37:42Right.
00:37:42Um, bears are going to put single high, a ton that are three, a ton.
00:37:48That's what you're going to see.
00:37:48And they're good at it.
00:37:50So be a good test.
00:37:51I think for me to play that type of defense and you know, the type of
00:37:55offense we've seen them call this West coast offense was kind of built to stop
00:37:59a lot of it, to go against some of these cover three defenses.
00:38:03So good test all around.
00:38:05You know, it's a good defense.
00:38:06You're on the road.
00:38:07I don't think the Patriots are going to win this game.
00:38:11I think that'll be tough, but again, you want it to be competitive.
00:38:15You want it to be, to be close.
00:38:17I think you really want to see improvement.
00:38:19I want, I want more from wide receivers today or this week.
00:38:24And I want more from the offensive line than we got last week.
00:38:27You just, you just gotta be better.
00:38:29A hundred percent.
00:38:30A hundred percent.
00:38:31And I think that, uh, you know, this is what, this is what you're looking for
00:38:36is, and we've talked about it all year long, what you're looking for is growth.
00:38:40We just want to see growth from the young guys.
00:38:44And that means the wide receivers.
00:38:46That means the offensive line.
00:38:47That means everyone.
00:38:49Right.
00:38:49Um, and that's, that's what you want to see and whether that
00:38:53will happen or not, I don't know, but that's what you're looking for.
00:38:57Um, and so, you know, and, and old man mentions, you know,
00:39:01Caleb running the ball to Caleb's not, not really runs the ball.
00:39:04It doesn't really run the ball as much as other guys.
00:39:08Um, but you know, yeah, that's certainly an issue.
00:39:13Um, but the Patriots have had, so we'll see, we'll see what they decide to do.
00:39:18Um, but you know, from a Patriots perspective, it's, it's
00:39:22going to be interesting at least.
00:39:23Yeah.
00:39:24Um, I will say on their receivers watching the last game, I know we
00:39:27talked on the post game show about being disappointed with the
00:39:29performance of the receivers.
00:39:31I didn't think it was as bad as I expected to be when I watched the tape.
00:39:36One, there were plays where guys were open.
00:39:39It just seemed like all the players where you, you could have
00:39:42gotten a big play out of it.
00:39:43There was pressure or more offensive line thing than a receivers thing there.
00:39:49And then the other, the other part, part of it was the Titans were
00:39:53really selling out to stop the pass.
00:39:57And that's why Drake may had so much room to run.
00:39:59I mean, they were running downfield with guys.
00:40:02They were, they played a very aggressive match zone type stuff.
00:40:06They were passing off routes very aggressively.
00:40:08They were on top of everything.
00:40:09There was just not a lot of room to throw based kind of on just
00:40:12the scheme the Titans had.
00:40:15And the consequences they were trying, they're selling out so
00:40:19hard to defend the pass.
00:40:21They had so much room to run the ball.
00:40:24Tons of, if you, if you try it, that's the thing, you know, you
00:40:27try to defend new England that way.
00:40:30He's going to be able to feast on you.
00:40:32And if you look to the future, you get a legitimate number
00:40:35one receiver in this offense.
00:40:38They're always going to have to play you that way, which means you
00:40:41can still pass in those situations because you have a guy that's
00:40:43still going to get open, but also.
00:40:46They can just take off and run and you can get big gains on the ground
00:40:52and make an offense out of it.
00:40:53Yeah, I think it's both, that's a really good sign for, as they
00:40:56improve the receiving core and recruit the offensive line.
00:40:59Yeah.
00:41:00Well, I also think too, when you start to look at it and you
00:41:02wonder if that's the case, right.
00:41:07If they are selling out to stop the pass, it's pretty embarrassing
00:41:12that remandering had 10 carriers for 16 yards rushing, right.
00:41:16Um, that's just, you just can't have that.
00:41:20Right.
00:41:20And so, um, yeah, that's, it should be very concerning if I'm a Patriots fan.
00:41:26And I'm looking at that saying they did, they sell out that they did.
00:41:31Let's try that again.
00:41:32They did sell out to stop the run, not stop the pass, I should say, but they
00:41:37were still able to stop the run.
00:41:39And that's concerning, especially in an offense that allegedly is really
00:41:44good at running the ball and has been good at running the ball.
00:41:47Right.
00:41:48So not great.
00:41:50Yeah.
00:41:51And that's that right there is how you get into the, uh, when it left guard
00:41:54Leighton Robinson at right guard thing, because Michael Jordan for that has
00:41:58been, uh, has been their second best pass blocking guard and one of their
00:42:02worst run blockers overall last two weeks, he regressed as a pass blocker.
00:42:07So that's one way that you end up here.
00:42:11Yeah.
00:42:12Fair.
00:42:13It's fair.
00:42:14So, all right.
00:42:16All right.
00:42:17You want to, uh, you want to go to our second ad break and then
00:42:20we'll, uh, kind of finish off here.
00:42:23Yep.
00:42:24This is this where we get in our hour of uniform talk afterwards.
00:42:28Yes.
00:42:28We will talk about the uniforms.
00:42:29I promise.
00:42:32All right.
00:42:33Let me, let me talk to you guys about game time.
00:42:36So we all know basketball season is here.
00:42:38Tough loss, tough loss Celtics against the warriors.
00:42:42Um, but you know, you can be there for the next game with game time and new
00:42:47feature it's called game time picks makes getting tickets to see your favorite
00:42:51game, Boston Celtics, hopefully play even easier, it filters out the fluff for you.
00:42:57So you can just see incredible deals on great seats.
00:43:00You open it up, you see the map.
00:43:02It's going to highlight best deals for you in each section.
00:43:06Makes it super easy.
00:43:07Plus you click on it.
00:43:09It's going to show you your view from your seat.
00:43:11Uh, it's got all in pricing.
00:43:12So the price you're seeing is the price you're going to pay.
00:43:14You're not, you're not going to have all these fees tacked on at the end.
00:43:18You know what you're going to do upfront.
00:43:21Um, and yeah, they got the lowest price guarantee too.
00:43:26So makes, makes everything easier.
00:43:28I've used it.
00:43:29I've had a great experience with it.
00:43:31I can't, I can't recommend it enough.

00:43:46Download game time today.
00:43:48What time is it?
00:43:49Game time.
00:43:52Love it.
00:43:52Love it.
00:43:54Um, there you go.
00:43:57Look at that.
00:43:58Um, all right, let's do it.
00:44:01Let's do it.
00:44:03Uh, the Patriots are playing on Sunday once again with their white
00:44:09jerseys and silver pants, which I actually thought I thought it was
00:44:13going to look terrible and actually looked pretty good, um, when they
00:44:16did it, uh, over in the, they did it over in London, correct?
00:44:20Yeah.
00:44:20Um, so I was, I was happy about that.
00:44:22I thought it looked pretty good, better than I thought it was
00:44:24going to look, that's for sure.
00:44:26Um, they're doing it again this weekend.
00:44:30And Taylor Kyle said it, you said it under Taylor Kyle's thing.
00:44:34It seems like a change is coming.
00:44:40What that change is going to be.
00:44:42I don't know.
00:44:44Um, I don't know.
00:44:47I just, man, it just, these, these uniforms are just so uninspiring.
00:44:56I think the white is a clean look.
00:44:58I really do.
00:45:00The dark Navy.
00:45:01It's just so boring.
00:45:03And the fact that they can't match any stripes anywhere.
00:45:06It just drives me crazy.
00:45:08Stripes, the stripes all do match.
00:45:10They're all red on the outside of another white or blue on the
00:45:14inside, depending on what they're on.
00:45:16I guess, I don't know.
00:45:17I just, I don't like it.
00:45:19I personally, I don't like it.
00:45:20I just feel like it's not, it's not as good as it used to be.
00:45:24You know, the, the, the, the, um, what's it called?
00:45:28The logo is going to say the logo.
00:45:30That's fine.
00:45:31Um, but you know, I, I wonder what the uniform would look like.
00:45:36And, and the way the NFL is going with uniforms, I'm sure it's going to
00:45:40suck just as much as it does now.
00:45:41But like, I just, I don't love the super dark blue.
00:45:46You don't have that color anywhere.
00:45:47And that's just in your color.
00:45:49Like, cause that's not your color scheme.
00:45:50That's not the color.
00:45:52I don't think.
00:45:53What do you mean?
00:45:55I mean, the, the blue in the Patriot isn't that color.
00:46:00It's darker than it's darker.
00:46:01Even then the McGee, the McGinnis one that I have over my
00:46:03shoulder is darker than that.
00:46:06No, they, they, the Patriots use the exact same blue now that
00:46:08they used in the dynasty era.
00:46:12No, the blue hasn't changed one bit.
00:46:15The last time the fabric, the last time the fabric color changed was in 2012
00:46:18when Nike came in and that's really only, uh, switching from the mat or from the
00:46:25shiny fabric that Reebok used to use.
00:46:27It looks different.
00:46:28It looks different.
00:46:28Maybe it's just because they wear the dark pants with it.
00:46:30But as my dad just texted me, they got to go back.
00:46:33They wear the silver pants with him.
00:46:34You don't wear the blueberry.
00:46:35I don't want to see any more of the frigging blueberry.
00:46:38Um, just, you know, where the dark over the silver.
00:46:41I don't, I don't know what the problem is.
00:46:43I think the reason you think it looks darker here, by the way, is because
00:46:46it's matte fabric and not shiny.
00:46:48So when it's shiny, when there's like the full Jersey, it's going to be lighter
00:46:53and you just don't get that now.
00:46:54That makes sense.
00:46:55Yeah.
00:46:55But I don't, I don't mind the current.
00:46:57So I do, I, it comes to just like picking a week to wear these uniforms.
00:47:01I think this is perfect because the bears are a navy blue team.
00:47:05So, you know, it breaks it up a little bit to have, you know, silver, white,
00:47:10silver versus blue, white, and orange.
00:47:14But yeah, I will see what happens.
00:47:18Somebody, somebody works in the pro shop.
00:47:20It mentioned to me, they thought new uniforms were coming
00:47:22next year or the year after.
00:47:23It bothers me that they waited until this year to start
00:47:26getting funky with the uniforms.
00:47:27If they started playing around with the uniform combinations in 2020,
00:47:31I think we all would have been fine with that.
00:47:33The better they insisted on the monochrome blue for the entirety of
00:47:37the first two years with the set.
00:47:40Yeah.
00:47:40We didn't, we didn't get, yeah.
00:47:43Matt, Bill Belichick was the coach.
00:47:46He didn't like messing with the uniforms.
00:47:48So we didn't like, I mean, you know, I don't think he cares.
00:47:52I honestly think it's all craft stuff because they mess with them early.
00:47:57They mess with, you know what?
00:47:58I just realized that this is, it's the same timeline because when they brought
00:48:02in the new, they were then Adidas uniforms in 2000, it wore the same
00:48:07combos the entire time, 2000 and 2001.
00:48:10The first two years of the set, 2002 is when they started messing around
00:48:14with it and started doing the all blue.
00:48:17The third year of the set is when they started the all blue and then they
00:48:19immediately lost both games at home.
00:48:21And we never saw that again.
00:48:23Oh, but that's, I think there's ugly silver jerseys for a bit, but that's,
00:48:33that's what happened with the new set is that they had the thing come in.
00:48:35And for the first two years, it was just that in year three is when
00:48:38they added the silver pants.
00:48:39Yeah.
00:48:40I started giving combos.
00:48:41So I wonder if that's a craft thing of, Hey, we're going to, we're
00:48:44going to establish a brand.
00:48:45We're going to have this set for two years.
00:48:46And then once it's established, we'll start playing around with it and
00:48:50I hope, I just hope they don't become one of those teams.
00:48:53That's like, we're going to have three helmets and four jerseys and four pairs
00:48:56of pants and everything is going to be something new, like, let's, you need,
00:49:01you know, you can have one or two combos to wear at home, one or two on the road
00:49:06and your red throwback and I'm good.
00:49:08Right.
00:49:09Agreed.
00:49:10Agreed.
00:49:11So, um, by the way, Nelson Aguilar just got touched on pass.
00:49:14Cause of course he did great, great play design.
00:49:17This is where Lamar is so much fun and not that they want, I want to do Drake May.
00:49:22I want Drake May to do this stuff, but like they run what looks like, you
00:49:27know, they ran like a fake jet sweep to the left and they looked like Lamar
00:49:31was going to run a power to the right.
00:49:33And everyone sucked up and Nelson Aguilar was just by himself in the end zone.
00:49:38Because of course he was, because of course you're thinking he's running
00:49:41from the seven yard line and he wasn't.
00:49:42So, but he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's,
00:49:46So, um, you know, it's a good play design, but that's, this is the type of stuff
00:49:51for me that's like, this is the type of crowd that Patriots should be doing.
00:49:54Have fun, do something different.
00:49:56And I don't think they're doing anything different.
00:49:58Well, it's also a lot easier to design plays like that.
00:50:01When you have a guy who might go back to back MVP here at quarterback,
00:50:06one of the best running backs in the league, offensive line, you know, I do
00:50:10think, like, I think offensive coordinator is very much get creditor blame based on
00:50:17the talent of the, it's a lot easier to design plays that work when your players
00:50:23can execute anything that you did.
00:50:25That's certainly fair.
00:50:27That is a, that is certainly fair.
00:50:28So the Patriots tried that I'm sure they would get sacked.
00:50:33Yeah.
00:50:34Yeah.
00:50:34Probably not right.
00:50:35Probably not run.
00:50:37So, all right.
00:50:38Um, anyway, so picks wise, what do you get for picks wise?
00:50:42You, I know, so my price picks, I'll just, I'll go over it with you people
00:50:47again, just so that, uh, just so you can hear my, my picks.
00:50:51Of course I did read them, um, in, um, during the ad read, but I do have
00:50:58Derek Henry tonight for more than 0.5 rushing, uh, or receiving TDs.
00:51:05I also have Hunter Henry for more than 42.5 receiving yards.
00:51:10And I also have Terry McLaurin for more than 58.5 receiving yards.
00:51:17Um, so if you, I should have actually asked you if you wanted to do
00:51:20price picks or, or our game picks first.
00:51:22It doesn't really know.
00:51:23Yeah.
00:51:23We're already into this.
00:51:24Uh, I've got, I've got Russell Wilson on Sunday or more than
00:51:30217 and a half passing yards.
00:51:33Love it.
00:51:34Against the, uh, Washington defense.
00:51:36I'm also going to take Drake May for more than 196.5 passing yards.
00:51:43All right.
00:51:43Bare quarterback passing yards.
00:51:46One step.
00:51:47I love it.
00:51:48I'm a fan of that.
00:51:50Um, I am a fan of that.
00:51:53We do our game picks here.
00:51:54And then get out of here.
00:51:55Yep.
00:51:55Game picks.
00:51:56And then we'll, uh, we'll get back out of here.
00:51:58All right.
00:51:58Here's the, here's the week nine slate roughly for you, Pat, roughly.
00:52:02Yeah.
00:52:02Not good.
00:52:03Not good.
00:52:04No, uh, Packers two and three.
00:52:07I go four and one.
00:52:09We've both got Colts at Vikings, Vikings taking that one
00:52:12and the Chiefs over the Bucs.
00:52:14Neither one of us got the Jets over the Tectons.
00:52:18And then I got the Chargers over the Browns and the Cardinals over the bears.
00:52:22You had neither of those.
00:52:23Yeah.
00:52:24You know, I really thought that the Browns, um, I was, I was
00:52:28picking on my heart with Jamis.
00:52:30And, um, he just got absolutely lit up.
00:52:33And the bears, I thought the bears were, were a pretty good team.
00:52:36Turns out the Raven, the, uh, the Cardinals are a little feisty, you
00:52:41know, uh, they're a pretty good team.
00:52:43So anyways,
00:52:45all right.
00:52:46Uh, this week you can see the records change at the top of there.
00:52:50Jumped ahead of you by one game there.
00:52:5313, 16, 29 and 16.
00:52:56We're going to start with the game.
00:52:57What's going on right now.
00:52:58Bengals at Ravens in the Thursday night slot.
00:53:01How would you say?
00:53:02So I did the exact same thing that I'm doing this week is what I did last week.
00:53:08I'm picking the better team and ignoring the team that is just totally desperate.
00:53:15Now the jet season was over.
00:53:16If they had lost last Thursday, their season was over.
00:53:19They came out hungrier than the Texans and won that game for me.
00:53:26Right.
00:53:26The, the Bengal season could be over if they lose this game, maybe not
00:53:30necessarily, but like if you're four and six, that's tough to come back
00:53:33from, especially in a good division.
00:53:35Um, but the Ravens are so good, man.
00:53:39The Ravens are so good.
00:53:41And so I'm going with the Ravens, um, because they're just so talented
00:53:45and you kind of see, you know, what they've done and the fact that they
00:53:50can do it offensively defensively.
00:53:53They have a good defense.
00:53:54They have an unbelievable, they have the best running back of the league
00:53:56probably, and one of the best quarterbacks in the league too.
00:53:58Uh, it's just, it's hard not to pick them every time they play, especially at home.
00:54:02Yeah.
00:54:02I don't have a whole lot more to add.
00:54:04I'm also going with the Ravens and the better team there at home.
00:54:08It's tied right now.
00:54:08We'll see if this pick comes true, but I still feel pretty good about that one.
00:54:12Sunday one o'clock.
00:54:14I think I may have tipped my hand here with one of my prize picks.
00:54:16Steelers at commanders.
00:54:19This is a very interesting game.
00:54:21I think Russell Wilson versus Jaden Daniels.
00:54:26Yeah.
00:54:26My, my heart says Washington because Daniels has been so damn good.
00:54:30Um, the Steelers are just like, I, I can't explain the Steelers.
00:54:38They've just been great this year and they're letting Russ cook and he's cooking.
00:54:43He's cooking, dude.
00:54:44And so I'm going Steelers here on the road.
00:54:49The bold, that is a bold pick.
00:54:51Uh, and one that I'm also going to make, I like, I like the
00:54:56defense against this commander's offense.
00:55:01Yeah.
00:55:01And I think to me is what will end up being kind of a, that's, that's
00:55:05the strength on strength matchup here.
00:55:08I want to see what happens here.
00:55:10And I do think the Steelers ended up coming out on top.
00:55:12I think they're just too experienced, too well coached against a rookie quarterback.
00:55:16This feels like the type of game where Jaden Daniels really gets
00:55:19tripped up for the first time.
00:55:20Yeah.
00:55:21Yeah, certainly possible.
00:55:22Yeah.
00:55:23Sunday afternoon, late afternoon slot Jets at Cardinals.
00:55:27You kicked against the Cardinals in this slot last week.
00:55:30You're going to do it again.
00:55:31Sure.
00:55:32I am.
00:55:34I just don't never learn.
00:55:35I never learned.
00:55:36This is why I'm terrible at gambling.
00:55:38I never learned anything.
00:55:39I don't follow trends that I should follow.
00:55:42I follow trends I shouldn't follow.
00:55:44I'm a complete disaster.
00:55:45Um, but again, I'm looking at the Jets and I'm saying that they are once
00:55:50again, on the verge of a complete meltdown, right?
00:55:54This is it.
00:55:54You lose this game and kind of moving forward.
00:55:57Now you lose one or two more games and your season's over.
00:56:01Right.
00:56:01And so I think that, um, for the Jets, they have to win this one.
00:56:05They have a few tough games coming up too.
00:56:07This is one of those games that you just feel like you have to win.
00:56:11I know the Cardinals played well last week.
00:56:13I think the Cardinals are a pretty good team.
00:56:15I just think the Jets are coming in supremely motivated, uh, and they
00:56:19get this win against the Cardinals.
00:56:21I'm just taking the Cardinals.
00:56:22I just think they're the better team.
00:56:24Yeah.
00:56:25They get that simple.
00:56:26Um, yeah, that's all there is to that, that on that one for me, I wouldn't be
00:56:31totally shocked to see the Jets win this one, but I do think the Cardinals are better.
00:56:35Yeah.
00:56:36Yeah.
00:56:37Fair, fair.
00:56:38Yep.
00:56:39Um, I'm the Texans, Texans are breaking out.
00:56:43They're all red alternate uniforms for this.
00:56:47We'll get to see those for the first time.
00:56:49You know what I think right now, right now, the way it stands, I just, I, I'm
00:56:56not going to pick against the lions in any game.
00:56:58I'm just not going to do it the rest of the year, unless they prove to me
00:57:02that they can't win big games.
00:57:05They have been dominating teams, not just winning, dominating.
00:57:11And we started last week with the Texans.
00:57:14Now they're coming off a mini by, they played Thursday night against the Jets,
00:57:16but you lose to the Jets.
00:57:18And now again, they have a lot to prove this week too.
00:57:23But I think that they still have that division, not that the division's
00:57:26on lock, but they still have a comfortable lead in that division.
00:57:29To me, the lions are just a wagon.
00:57:32Um, and, and I think they win this game.
00:57:36You might be right.
00:57:38I'm taking the home team here.
00:57:39I think the Texans are like, I have my issues with the Texans, but I think they
00:57:43bounce back from that loss last week and do something good.
00:57:48Now, I, the injuries with the Texans are tough and the lions do look like
00:57:53a buzzsaw at this point.
00:57:54So this might look real ugly for me in a couple of days time, but I just, I do
00:58:01think the Texans end up pulling this off at home.
00:58:03I think it'll be a good game.
00:58:04Yeah.
00:58:05I'm looking forward to that game.
00:58:06I think it's going to be a lot of fun.
00:58:07Monday Night Football, Dolphins and Rams.
00:58:12Yeah.
00:58:12Yeah.
00:58:14This is, wait, this is the football game.
00:58:16I just got it.
00:58:16How did this end up at the Monday Night Football game?
00:58:19Uh, especially when you can flex games out, I guess.
00:58:21I mean, two is back and the Dolphins are a competent football team with Tua.
00:58:25They are not a competent football team without them.
00:58:27They are a competent football team with Tua.
00:58:29So, um, I can see that, um, I'm going Dolphins here.
00:58:35I just think they haven't put everything together since Tua came back.
00:58:42They've slowly been building there.
00:58:45And I think that, uh, that this is the one that it kind of comes
00:58:47together when they win this game.
00:58:51I'm not sure.
00:58:52I agree.
00:58:53I do think the Rams take this down.
00:58:54I also just realized doing this, that our ticker has been wrong the whole,
00:58:57the whole episode and it's had last week's schedule on it instead of this week's.
00:59:01Eh, it's fine.
00:59:02Yeah.
00:59:02We have the, we have the Patriots game, right?
00:59:05Do we?
00:59:07We do.
00:59:09On the ticker?
00:59:10Yeah.
00:59:11Oh, no, no.
00:59:11I mean, in the schedule section right here, this is actually,
00:59:13it's two weeks old somehow.
00:59:15I don't know how that happened.
00:59:16Uh, I was rushing to do that before the show.
00:59:20All kinds of technical errors there.
00:59:21So you can ignore the schedule at the bottom of the screen.
00:59:24But yeah, I think the Rams are starting it a little bit healthier here.
00:59:26And this is, this is a game between two teams that are flawed,
00:59:31banged up, similar identities.
00:59:34So I think that's very interesting.
00:59:36I think we'll learn a lot about where these teams stand.
00:59:38Then the Pats play the Rams the week after this.
00:59:40So, uh, you know, your Pats can tune in and see what we're going to have
00:59:43coming to Joel Sadian the week after.
00:59:46Yeah, it's going to be a, it'll be a fun game.
00:59:49So we'll see though.
00:59:50I mean, the Rams are a good team, I think.
00:59:52And so I certainly, I certainly, um, wouldn't be surprised if they win this
01:00:02game, but I just think the Dolphins, they're eventually going to put it together.
01:00:08That's my opinion.
01:00:09At least we'll see.
01:00:10We have people that live in, they were competitive last week.
01:00:12So, um, but yeah, those are our picks.
01:00:16All right.
01:00:17One quick question that maybe we can talk about for a second.
01:00:20TD, I'm a little, I'm a little, uh, hurt that you don't think that I'm, um, I'm
01:00:24ready to talk college, college football.
01:00:26Um, Travis Hunter.
01:00:29Is he a wide receiver in the NFL or a corner in the NFL?
01:00:31What do you think?
01:00:33I don't know yet.
01:00:34I have only watched some of his receiver tape.
01:00:37I have not watched any of his corner tape yet.
01:00:39Okay.
01:00:40I'll say it was his receiver tape.
01:00:41You see the athleticism, you see the traits.
01:00:45I don't know if you see the technique and I am hesitant about picking a wide
01:00:54receiver based on athleticism alone, because it is such a technique, heavy
01:00:58position, he does things no one else can do.
01:01:03And he has amazing hands.
01:01:04So like maybe he's worth the risk.
01:01:08I personally, I think if you draft him, you play in both ways.
01:01:11At first, at least rookie year, rookie year, I'd have an offensive package
01:01:15for him, a defense package for him.
01:01:17Let him play both, see where he ends up fitting best, and then
01:01:20maybe make a decision after that.
01:01:22Yeah, I guess.
01:01:24I don't know, man.
01:01:25I, what I worry about is that you're going to burn them out after a year.
01:01:29Like you can play, you can play both ways and be in college.
01:01:32Like that's fine.
01:01:34You know, and they're within what the big 12, like you could
01:01:36play both ways in the big 12.
01:01:38We can do that.
01:01:39But like, I don't know, you can play both ways in the NFL.
01:01:42You can play 120 snaps.
01:01:45I mean, that's, that's insanity.
01:01:47I don't think he can do that, but I think, I think he can play 60
01:01:49snaps, 30 offense, 30 defense.
01:01:51I think that's where I would start him.
01:01:53Put him in your two minute package on offense.
01:01:55Put him in your third and long package on offense.
01:01:58Put him in for some shot plays and some first down stuff on offense.
01:02:02And then defensively, maybe just your third down stuff.
01:02:05Um, you know, your passing situations and, um, you know, stuff where basically
01:02:09anything where the game was competitive, any kind of big plays, either side, you
01:02:13want him on the field type of thing.
01:02:15Yeah.
01:02:15And then just, you know, see what he takes to see where he excelled.
01:02:18I do think corner is probably the natural fallback for him because I think it's.
01:02:24And he's a, he's a better corner than I think he's a better
01:02:27corner than wind receiver, but that's just me.
01:02:30From what I've seen, there's watching games.
01:02:32He is more technically sound.
01:02:34Corner.
01:02:34And like, you can use those hands as a corner.
01:02:37He'll have the best hands of any DB in the NFL.
01:02:40And he'll probably, I don't know if he'll lead the league in picks
01:02:43because people might not throw at him, but he'll get his fair share of
01:02:47picks and that'll be a big impact for you.
01:02:49Yeah.
01:02:49The other thing here is this, I think he's a rare talent.
01:02:52I think he has, I think in theory he could play a hundred or 80 snaps
01:02:58a game in the NFL or to each way or 60, you know, it doesn't come off the
01:03:02field on defense and has packages on offense, I think you can do that.
01:03:06Uh, it's just, is that worth a top five pick?
01:03:10Like his, the way he's valued.
01:03:12It's going to be so hard to figure out what he might be is a great
01:03:17cornerback prospect and a good wide receiver prospect.
01:03:21I don't know if either one of those is worth the top five.
01:03:24Right.
01:03:26If you're only going to have him play one way in the NFL, probably not a top five
01:03:31pick, but he's also such a rare talent that you might just say, Hey, come
01:03:35and say, we'll figure it out later.
01:03:36It's, it's interesting.
01:03:37That's, it's an interesting question.
01:03:39And I really don't know.
01:03:40Um, you know, I do have concerns, right?
01:03:44Drafting him in the top five.
01:03:45I, I'm in agreement with you on that.
01:03:49Again, I think you in the, I think he should win the Heisman because he's been,
01:03:53you know, to be that good on both sides of the football is incredible.
01:03:56Um, and something that nobody else has ever done before in the
01:03:59history of college football.
01:04:01Um, but you know, again, does that mean he's a top five pick?
01:04:06I don't know, you know, so that's, that's the question.
01:04:09Um, and we'll see, we, Oh man, we'll get into, we'll get into
01:04:13Teagans at some point.
01:04:14I think it is interesting.
01:04:15He's not playing again tonight, but he's hurt.
01:04:16I mean, like if he's hurt, he's hurt.
01:04:18What are you gonna do?
01:04:18Um, you know, I have questions about whether we actually, you know, pay that
01:04:25much money for, for a wide receiver that may or may not be a number one guy, but
01:04:31I don't know, maybe they're that desperate.
01:04:32I'm not sure.
01:04:33So, and Dion, by the way, TD Dion did play both ways, but not to the
01:04:38extent that Travis Hunter is doing.
01:04:39Travis Hunter is playing 120 snaps a game.
01:04:41Like no one's ever done anything like that.
01:04:43Dion played both ways and play special teams and did all this stuff.
01:04:46Like, but not to the extent that, you know, that, that he's doing it.
01:04:50It's, it's unheard of.
01:04:52Well, and I think the other thing here with Travis Hunter is that, but to the
01:04:55extent that he is doing this, he, that is part of his rare athleticism.
01:04:59The fact that he can play that many plays in a game at a high level.
01:05:03So I think in some ways, if you're, if you're asking him to just play one
01:05:06position, at least a year one, I think you're almost, you're selling yourself
01:05:09short because his body can handle this.
01:05:13Can his body handle that for a 10 year and adult career?
01:05:16I highly doubt that, but I do think what you would probably see is you have him
01:05:20start playing both ways, see where he's better, see how he handles things.
01:05:24And, you know, he may, maybe he becomes a 60, 60 snaps, one way, 20
01:05:29snaps, the other type of player.
01:05:30Maybe he's a 40, 40 guy, maybe just offense or just defense by year three.
01:05:35Cause he's just that much better at one of them.
01:05:37And you want him to specialize.
01:05:38Um, and there's a chance he's a bust and he just can't do either.
01:05:43And well, there goes your pick.
01:05:45And he's interesting.
01:05:45Cause you, you almost wonder like sometimes to play both ways like that, it's almost
01:05:52just because of your athletics.
01:05:54And I feel like sometimes it's just like, you're that much
01:05:56more talented than everyone else.
01:05:59And so because you're that much more talented than everyone else,
01:06:02like you just dominate them.
01:06:04And like, that just doesn't happen in the pros usually, right.
01:06:08You're just not able to dominate people like that in pros.
01:06:10And so like, I don't know, I wonder if, if, um, if he could, you know, not be as
01:06:16good in the pros as he is in college, but again, I, you know, I have no idea.
01:06:21And maybe, maybe yeah.
01:06:23So this doesn't translate and he just can't do that.
01:06:26And that's certainly possible.
01:06:27Right.
01:06:27Imagine he comes out and he's like incredible in both ways.
01:06:29And you're just like, holy crap, this guy's like the most unbelievable
01:06:31athlete ever, because he certainly could be right.
01:06:34And, and maybe, maybe that's, maybe that's kind of the idea.
01:06:37So we'll see, we'll see, but anyways, let's get the heck out of here.
01:06:42Um, thanks for tuning in everyone.
01:06:43We appreciate it.
01:06:44Uh, I will be at the game on Sunday, so I will not be here, uh, after the game
01:06:49talking, uh, breaking down the game on Sunday, but Matt will be here with, with
01:06:53a friend, uh, what friend, I don't know, or potentially by yourself.
01:06:56I don't know.
01:06:57I don't know yet either.
01:06:58Yeah.
01:06:58It's chaotic week here.
01:07:01That is true.
01:07:02That is true.
01:07:03Hopefully my computer works.
01:07:04Yeah.
01:07:04Right.
01:07:05Right.
01:07:05So Matt, uh, potentially we'll be here after, hopefully.
01:07:08Um, maybe I'll just, maybe let's do a live stream from Chicago, walking
01:07:13on the street or something like that.
01:07:14Yeah.
01:07:14It might, you guys might get an hour of me doing tech support over here.
01:07:18So, but, uh, but anyway, so it's going to be fun this weekend.
01:07:22Actually.
01:07:22I don't even think I mentioned this on the show, but, uh, we're
01:07:26actually going to Florida, um, Notre Dame, Florida state on Saturday.
01:07:31So I know I told you this map, but, uh, we're flying in on Saturday.
01:07:35Driving immediately driving to, uh, South bend, um, to go see the Notre
01:07:41Dame fighting Irish play against the Florida state Seminoles on
01:07:44Saturday night, football, seven 30.
01:07:47We're going to get there super early.
01:07:48Try to, you know, walk around tailgate, meet up with as many people as we
01:07:51can, just like go from tailgate to tailgate, try to hang out with a bunch
01:07:55of people, um, and then go, uh, and then go to that game, then we're driving
01:08:00back to Chicago that night and then getting up for the noon start on, uh,
01:08:06on Sunday for the game at soldier field.
01:08:08So it's going to be a heck of a weekend.
01:08:10I'm very excited about it.
01:08:11Um, and, uh, it's going to be, it's going to be long.
01:08:14It's going to be long.
01:08:16Um, but you know, we'll see what happens.
01:08:18So, so anyways, all right, well, thank you.
01:08:22And, uh, thanks everyone.
01:08:24And we'll, uh, we'll talk to you guys.
01:08:25Well, Matt, we'll talk to you guys.
01:08:26Hopefully if his computer doesn't blow up on, on Sunday.
01:08:30Uh, and then we'll be back next week talking about the next one.
01:08:33We have any experience.
01:08:34So thanks guys.
01:08:35Appreciate it.
01:08:36And, uh, take care of yourselves.
