00:00Big day, huge day.
00:03I don't know if you know this Doug,
00:04but not only is it election day,
00:08but more importantly,
00:11the Lions apparently have traded for Zedarius Smith.
00:15Defensive end, pass rush extraordinaire
00:19from the Cleveland Browns.
00:21Been around the league, been with a number of teams,
00:22and he's always been good.
00:24And now the Lions have him, reportedly.
00:28Lots of people saying it, Adam Schefter, Ian Rapoport.
00:32All the guys with the blue check marks,
00:34they're all mentioning it.
00:35This is good news, very, very good news for the Lions.
00:39We've had people that have been calling into the show
00:42for the last week and a half or so
00:44as we got closer to the deadline.
00:46People that, you know, for lack of better terms,
00:52had their panties in a bunch,
00:54and were not happy that things had not happened yet.
00:58We had people say that it's ridiculous
01:01that the trades haven't been made yet.
01:04It's unacceptable that they haven't done anything yet.
01:08What's he waiting for, malpractice?
01:10Right, that was another one.
01:12Well, here you go.
01:13So all they did in the interim
01:14was win all the games they had to play
01:17once we started talking about the deadline.
01:19And then they go out and swing the big stick
01:23and end up landing Zedarius Smith,
01:27who I'm going to guess is the best pass rusher on the market
01:32because I'm going to assume
01:33that Trey Hendrickson is not available
01:35as Cincinnati has traded for a running back,
01:36so they're still going for it.
01:38I'm going to assume that Max Crosby, that deal was dead
01:41because it would make all the sense in the world
01:42for him to come back home.
01:43And the reports over the weekend
01:45that the Lions reached out to the Raiders once again
01:49and tried to gauge the interest,
01:50and the Raiders just said, no deal, not happening.
01:53He's not getting traded.
01:54And then if they're talking to Cleveland,
01:56you would assume that they were talking
01:58about Miles Garrett too, and Cleveland said,
02:00we got to make a decision on the two defensive ends.
02:02One's staying, one's going,
02:05and we can talk about Zedarius Smith, but not Miles Garrett.
02:09So, and then now you got Jerry in Dallas
02:12that has said they're not selling, they're buying,
02:14and they went out and got a wide receiver today as well
02:17in Mingo.
02:19So any kind of pipe dream that I had
02:21or anybody else had about maybe fleecing Jerry
02:24for Micah Parsons, because they just don't have
02:28any cap space to deal with when you've got
02:32three guys that can command the highest salaries
02:35in football, Jerry's going for it.
02:39Jerry's not giving up.
02:40So Jerry's not giving up Micah Parsons.
02:42So, there they are.
02:44All those great pass rushers are not available.
02:47So the best one who is available
02:49is now reportedly a Detroit Lion, and I love it.
02:52So, look, I mean, I feel like I do want to address
02:59some of the absurdity we got here
03:01over the last couple of weeks,
03:03which included some of what you said.
03:07Malpractice, we're asleep at the wheel.
03:12Brad Holmes is too arrogant.
03:15Yeah, there was that one.
03:16Brad Holmes is too stubborn.
03:19Brad Holmes overvalues his draft picks.
03:25They should have made a deal already, all of that stuff.
03:30If they had made a deal, quote, already,
03:32they would have done it on Cleveland's terms.
03:36This was done on Detroit's terms.
03:40Detroit waited and waited and got their guy.
03:43They're better today than they were.
03:46Their chances to win the Super Bowl went up,
03:49and the price tag is what Brad Holmes wanted to give up.
03:52Albert Breer and others reporting today,
03:55Cleveland wanted a fourth.
03:58Didn't quite get there, but close.
04:01Jeremy Fowler reported the sense coming out Monday
04:04was that the Lions were waiting on the Browns,
04:07who by keeping Zedaria Smith through week nine
04:09could see if another team developed
04:11a major need at pass rush.
04:13The Browns wanted a fourth,
04:15but now get a fifth and a sixth next year
04:17for Smith and a seventh.
04:19By waiting, Brad Holmes got them
04:22at a price Brad Holmes wanted.
04:25Like this, this, and by waiting,
04:27did it cost them any wins?
04:29Nope, it did not.
04:34It just, it's baffled me over the last couple of weeks
04:38that we have taken so many text messages
04:44from people who probably aren't morons,
04:51but I would say had some moronic takes,
04:54because Brad Holmes has delivered.
05:00He has delivered.
05:01Now maybe he hasn't delivered everything that you wanted
05:04and when you wanted that whatever it is you wanted,
05:09but Brad Holmes has built this team
05:13to the point where you care about the NFL trade deadline.
05:18Kang sent me a text message last night
05:21and asked me, would I rather be a fly on the wall
05:25right now in Brad Holmes's office
05:27or for like a day of draft prep
05:31or the first day of the draft?
05:35We've been doing this job for almost 18 years now, right?
05:39I would say the first 16, it would have been the draft,
05:45but now it's the trade deadline, why?
05:48Because the games that we are playing right now matter
05:53in the context of they're not trying
05:55to build a Super Bowl team,
05:57they're trying to add to a team that's capable already
06:00of winning the Super Bowl.
06:02I couldn't believe some of the feedback we got.
06:05I said, they're gonna make a trade,
06:06they're gonna make a trade,
06:07they're gonna make a trade.
06:08And by waiting, not only did he get the player he wanted
06:12at a price he wanted,
06:16he didn't cost them any games.
06:20Like the point of the games is to win the games.
06:23It's not to sack the quarterback,
06:25that's not a tiebreaker, it's how many sacks do you have?
06:30Can you win the football game that you're playing?
06:32Do you have more points in the other team
06:33when the clock hits zero in the fourth quarter?
06:36And all the time without Aiden Hutchinson, they didn't.
06:39And people were, not all of you, not all of you.
06:44In fact, probably most of you weren't.
06:47But the not morons were.
06:53And now they got a guy.
06:55And you know what?
06:57Trading for Zedarius Smith
06:58doesn't make you win the Super Bowl.
07:00No.
07:01It might help, but there's no trophy
07:02he's getting handed out now.
07:04Ain't gonna hurt.
07:06But their percent chance
07:07of winning the Super Bowl increased.
07:09So whatever it was, it's higher now
07:11than it was at this time yesterday.
07:15And the assets they had to give up
07:16was less than Cleveland wanted.
