00:00:00All right, everyone, welcome back into another live edition of the Patriots Beat Podcast
00:00:29here on the CLNS Media Network presented by all of our wonderful friends over at PrizePix
00:00:35GameTime and PXG.
00:00:36It is Brian Hines back as always with Alex Barth to break down a 2017 Patriots loss to
00:00:44the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.
00:00:46Went to overtime.
00:00:47They almost pulled off some Drake May magic at the end there, but then Tennessee marched
00:00:53down the field, kicks field goal in overtime, Drake May throws an interception and the Patriots
00:00:58fall to two and seven on the year and as much as I would always love to start these
00:01:04with Drake May magic and talk about the positives with Drake May, I want to start with the coaching
00:01:10staff today because we gave Gerard Mayo some credit last week.
00:01:15He pulled out the card of calling his team, you know, soft performance and they responded
00:01:20well.
00:01:21They won the game and we said they got to keep that going.
00:01:24They got to continue that momentum into this week.
00:01:27The coaching staff did not.
00:01:28It was a bad performance from the coaching staff.
00:01:31You know, penalties was one thing.
00:01:33They had eight penalties and, you know, Tennessee tried to give you that game.
00:01:36They had ten penalties.
00:01:38They had plays like fumbling and overtime when they were marching right down the field.
00:01:42It felt like they were even too pass happy maybe at times, but it was a sloppy game from
00:01:47the coaching staff.
00:01:48There were a couple key points that, you know, I've been going around online that key talking
00:01:54points with the offensive line, the switch early in the game, they mess up another end
00:01:59of the first half situation, the two point conversion, which we weren't too upset with
00:02:04that decision.
00:02:06You could even throw the overtime choice of playing into the wind, you know, another one
00:02:10that was kind of minor, but there were some questionable coaching decisions in this game
00:02:16and we'll get into all of those a little bit more here, but I know you weren't pleased
00:02:21with the staff either from yesterday.
00:02:23So what, what was your kind of take about them?
00:02:26Yeah, I, so my big take from this game is this was the worst coach game they've played
00:02:32this year.
00:02:33I think maybe if you want to talk about the Jets week three, but in game management was
00:02:38certainly the worst and the preparation didn't feel good either.
00:02:42That's not to say they've been great in other games.
00:02:44They've certainly had their moments elsewhere, but you know, I think you can look at three
00:02:48or four major coaching points in this game that I don't want to say we're avoidable,
00:02:54but like they, they, they failed, they failed in, in either decisions or preparation.
00:02:59And I mean, just to run, run through them real quick off the top of my head, lost the
00:03:03turnover battle to the worst turnover team in the NFL.
00:03:05That's partially on the coaching.
00:03:07Then you had switching the offensive line.
00:03:09That's two.
00:03:10You had the end of the first half and you had the two point thing.
00:03:14Those are four major inflection points that go on the coaching staff that are key reasons
00:03:21why they lost this game to varying degrees.
00:03:23Well, I think me and you feel similarly that the two point things may be a little overblown,
00:03:28but just for the sake of it is being talked about, it is a discussion.
00:03:31We can get to that.
00:03:32I think it is a fair discussion, but yeah, this was, you know, first and foremost on
00:03:37the coaching staff, this was not the, now look, when I say it's not about the roster
00:03:42not being good enough, the Titans roster blows.
00:03:44So this really wasn't a game where the Patriots are going to be outclassed, especially with
00:03:47all the injuries on Tennessee side.
00:03:49But this, this game was about the coaching first and foremost.
00:03:52Yep.
00:03:53Yeah.
00:03:54So you mentioned again, those points let's kind of dive into those and we can go and
00:03:59almost order here.
00:04:00Yeah.
00:04:01Number one was the offensive line.
00:04:02Yeah.
00:04:03They finally had some continuity last week, you know, with Darian Lowe, uh, Michael Jordan
00:04:07at left guard, Ben Brown at center, Mike and window at right guard and, uh, Trey Jacobs
00:04:12at right tackle.
00:04:13They went away from that to start this game.
00:04:15Leighton Robinson is back from injury.
00:04:18So they put him at right guard, Mike and when you at right tackle, I'm guessing it was to
00:04:24maybe try and get a little bit more push in the run game on that right side, but to mess
00:04:29with the continuity after a game that you had your best, uh, pressure percentage against
00:04:36the loud was a puzzling decision, especially when Tennessee's best player, Jeffrey Simmons,
00:04:42who is a monster defensive tackle is along the interior.
00:04:46And you put a rookie in Leighton Robinson coming off an injury, who's had issues in
00:04:50past protection, basically one-on-one against him.
00:04:53When your best lineman is Mike and window and he's been playing right guard and he's,
00:04:57we all like to say, and Scott Peters has even said he's a guard, he's best at guard.
00:05:02So that decision was puzzling.
00:05:05It didn't last long.
00:05:06Leighton Robinson played 21 snaps and then they went back to Mike and when you and Trey
00:05:10Jacobs on the right side, settled it down a little bit, still not much in the run game
00:05:14and we'll talk plenty about the run game, but puzzling decision out of the gate, they're
00:05:20putting Leighton Robinson in when Jeffrey Simmons, uh, is on the other side of the office
00:05:24on the defensive line there.
00:05:26I hated it.
00:05:27I mean, just, just, just point blank.
00:05:28I hated it from the moment I saw the tweets that they have a different offensive line.
00:05:33How much have we talked about consistency, consistency, consistency, and I know, Oh,
00:05:37you're the media.
00:05:38Who cares?
00:05:39I'm getting this from Dante Skarnecchia.
00:05:40This was some Dante Skarnecchia talked about a ton.
00:05:42So if you want to say it's a non-starting talking point, you can take that up with the
00:05:45greatest offensive line coach in the history of this game.
00:05:49You had an offensive line that was starting to work together.
00:05:51That was it an all-star cast?
00:05:54No, but for what it's been this year was playing relatively well.
00:05:58That includes your best lineman who the offensive line coach, like you said, Brian, thank you
00:06:02for pointing that out, told us is best as a guard that they wanted to guard law as a
00:06:06guard longterm.
00:06:07When may I was asked after the game, why they made the change?
00:06:10He deflected answering about the initial change and talked about why they made the change
00:06:16in game saying, well, you know, Jeffrey Simmons was killing us and we wanted our best player
00:06:20on him.
00:06:21You knew Jeffrey Simmons crazy on the inside before the game.
00:06:25I know he knew because I always pay attention to this because this is the thing with bill.
00:06:30I always made a point of noticing when bill did the breakdown on Wednesday that Gerard
00:06:35Mayo is now doing right where he goes through the whole team.
00:06:38Who's the first player bill mentions.
00:06:40I always made a point of recognizing that.
00:06:43Well, not just the game record, but like it's clearly like that's who's on top of his mind.
00:06:47The first player Gerard Mayo mentioned on Wednesday, Jeffrey Simmons, you knew he was
00:06:53going to be there in the middle being a problem.
00:06:55And not only did, did Leighton Robinson struggle.
00:06:58And I think they liked Leighton Robinson too much.
00:07:01Maybe he'll be a good player down the road.
00:07:03He's not ready.
00:07:05He's not ready to be out there.
00:07:06He can't pass block.
00:07:07It's a good run blocker and I'm with you.
00:07:08I think they wanted to jumpstart the run game.
00:07:11He can't, he's a liability pass blocking.
00:07:13He needs more work behind the scenes.
00:07:16Not only did that impact there, you saw Ben Brown and, and, and Michael Jordan have their
00:07:23worst games of the year.
00:07:25And I don't think though, now Jefferson is a fantastic player and he gets some credit
00:07:29here too.
00:07:30Cause I think he's one of the most underrated players in the league.
00:07:32He gets credit here.
00:07:33Absolutely.
00:07:34But I don't think it's unrelated that you change one spot on the interior and two other
00:07:39guys suddenly fall off.
00:07:41I don't think that's a coincidence.
00:07:43Those two things are related.
00:07:44So Lane Robinson should not be in the lineup next week pending injury, but it looked like
00:07:50they got out of the game healthy.
00:07:52Like they, they have a group, they're building consistency, stick with it.
00:07:58If they think Lane Robinson's an answer down the road, figure that out down the road, I'll
00:08:03put on top of that.
00:08:05I don't need Lane Robinson to be an answer.
00:08:07Neither should they.
00:08:08And this is why I, that pick bothered me at the time.
00:08:11Again, Scott Peters told us they think Michael and when it was best as a guard.
00:08:16I don't know if there's some urgency to get them out to tackle so they don't have to add
00:08:19a tackle this off season.
00:08:21Cause this also came, remember in the same week, well, this also came in the same week
00:08:26that Gerard Mayo told us that if an area low could be an answer longterm, we talked about
00:08:29that on the last show.
00:08:30Darian Lowe has been solid this year, but he's been fine.
00:08:34Is that sustainable?
00:08:35And ideally you want a little better than fine at such a high impact position.
00:08:39Are they trying to set themselves up to be able to take a Travis Hunter, to be able to
00:08:43take a Ted, a Ted McMillan's too early, do any of that.
00:08:46But like Michael and when it was not an answer, tackle, it's not, he's not late and Robinson's
00:08:51not the answer.
00:08:52Gordon keep my code window on the inside and of all the games to do it against Jeffrey
00:08:57Sweat, who was really good in this game as well, major unforced error by the coaching
00:09:03staff.
00:09:04Definitely.
00:09:05Definitely agree.
00:09:06I do wonder, and I, I agree with you on the continuity.
00:09:09We've discussed that a lot the whole year dating back to even training camp.
00:09:14I wonder if maybe they try something new at left guard because it was Jordan's worst game,
00:09:21but he has been trending downwards.
00:09:23You know, I talked about this last week that maybe they could be a switch there.
00:09:28And I mean, Ben Brown's their only center and you don't want to get on him too much
00:09:31because it's, it's a tough situation.
00:09:34You know, he got signed off a practice squad less than a month ago, but you know, his play
00:09:39hasn't been great either.
00:09:40And they're going against Jeffrey Simmons and Tavandre sweat, tough matchups.
00:09:43But yeah, those guys like the run game has been a big part, I think though those struggles
00:09:50there.
00:09:51I mean, maybe they try Lane Robinson on the left side.
00:09:53If they love him so much, we still haven't seen, you know, city, even still, sorry to
00:09:59cut you off.
00:10:00If this guy's struggling, the answer is not to move him to another position.
00:10:03He has been practicing it.
00:10:04I'd go to city.
00:10:05So at that point, or if cold straight, I think we're still probably a couple of weeks away,
00:10:08but cold, strange.
00:10:10That's I think your best five, if everyone's healthy, it's like the Darien low at left
00:10:17tackle city.
00:10:18So at left guard, cold, strange at center, Michael window at right tackle and trade Jacobs
00:10:23at right tackle or on window at right guard, trade Jacobs at right tackle, or if Caden
00:10:28Wallace comes back.
00:10:29Although I think trade Jacobs has been, you know, solid next to Mike and when you're,
00:10:33but they seem to have a battle there.
00:10:35You can have a battle.
00:10:36I would just push back on, on cold strain to center.
00:10:38We don't know what he's going to look like at center.
00:10:40That's going to be a project.
00:10:41I is one bad game for Ben Brown.
00:10:45I'll let it ride with him a little bit more before I go there.
00:10:47I still think he's their best center right now.
00:10:49I reserve the right.
00:10:50Changed my mind, but I, he's the one bad guy that, no, they have, um, but, um, I'll let
00:10:59it ride with Ben Brown for now, you know, one bad game against a guy like Jeffrey Simmons.
00:11:04Let me see if he can bounce back next week.
00:11:05Yep.
00:11:06Yeah.
00:11:07I just wonder if, you know, cause they, they need to start running the football and I wonder
00:11:12so much of that does seem to be on the offensive line.
00:11:15But they've had negative yards before contact each of the last four weeks.
00:11:20And that coincides with both Drake taking over and Ben Brown playing center.
00:11:24So again, they're not going to change off Ben Brown right now.
00:11:28Maybe if there are confident when, when Cole strange comes back there, but I do wonder
00:11:32if for as much as we've talked about continuity, if there is a change they could make right
00:11:39now that could help just the run game, because they got to get something going there.
00:11:43You know, Drake, the leading rusher yesterday, 95 yards on the eight scrambles.
00:11:47The running backs had 12 carries for 15 total yards.
00:11:51They have one run of 10 plus yards in the last month.
00:11:55I know you have tons of stats about the Russian game too, but if there is a change on that
00:11:59offensive line, I would just wonder if they make that to try to get this run game going
00:12:04because we'll definitely discuss Drake more, but like it's all in his hands right now.
00:12:09They need a run game to try and help him a little bit.
00:12:12And maybe a switch up front on that offensive line could help that.
00:12:15Yeah.
00:12:16Drake may can't be the entire run game and he is right now.
00:12:18So I'll give you one of these stats, Brian.
00:12:20I've kind of been looking at these all day where it go.
00:12:24Since Drake met the heck there it is.
00:12:29Since Drake may took over his Patriots starting quarterback in week six, he has 197 rushing
00:12:34yards.
00:12:35It's good.
00:12:3610.4 yards for carry one 97.
00:12:38Everybody else combined one 45, 1.9 yards per carry.
00:12:44He is their run game.
00:12:45They have zero run game without Drake may zero run game without him.
00:12:50That's not sustainable.
00:12:52Just like we talked about at the beginning of the year when they were running all over
00:12:55the Bengals and we said, well, he had a 120 yards, 118 of them came after contact.
00:13:00That's not sustainable.
00:13:02This is kind of the same thing where it looks good now.
00:13:05You can't do this for 17 games.
00:13:08You can't.
00:13:09I don't know that you can do it for eight.
00:13:11They got to find a way to run the football.
00:13:14Yeah.
00:13:15He's been averaging like 40, I think it was 45, just over 45, 46 dropbacks a game.
00:13:21Like yesterday they just, and they were down late.
00:13:23So that contributed to it, but they had just had a ditch.
00:13:25I think they called like 15, 16 straight pass plays because they just can't run the football.
00:13:30So not sustainable.
00:13:31They got to get something going there.
00:13:33Most of that does look like it is on the offensive line.
00:13:35So maybe there's a switch, but the early switch laid in Robinson for Michael when new
00:13:40head scratcher, not a great choice there.
00:13:45But the next coaching staff kind of puzzling decision.
00:13:49Have we ever seen them mess up a end of the first half situation because they got the
00:13:54ball.
00:13:55I don't, I didn't write down the time.
00:13:57What it was like one 45 left to go in the first half.
00:14:02They went like 14 yard completion to Kendrick born nine yard completion to Kendrick born
00:14:07second and one.
00:14:08They run it, which Michael hasty stuffed, and now they sub in, you know, a heavy personnel
00:14:13group on third and one run it with Ramond Ray stuff punt back to the other team.
00:14:19They didn't waste the whole first half and that was prices shank too.
00:14:23So luckily they didn't give up any points there, but just another kind of botched first
00:14:28half.
00:14:29End of the first half situation there, which again is a reoccurring error repeater or whatever
00:14:34draw mail wants to call it, but they are making the mistakes that he says we can't make and
00:14:40they keep doing it.
00:14:41I know you have your rant like every week we've heard it pretty much.
00:14:44So I mean, do you have it memorized at this point?
00:14:49Like I don't know how much more I have to add.
00:14:51This is six times now, six times they've had a two minute drill at the end of the first
00:14:55half.
00:14:56They scored once.
00:14:57Cause Drake may just went banana land.
00:14:59They killed the clock once, which I know people were annoyed.
00:15:02They didn't push the ball.
00:15:03Holy crap.
00:15:04At this point, I'll just give them credit for executing a plan.
00:15:07Even if it's not the right plan, actually executed a plan in four times, they've botched
00:15:10it four of six that 75% of the time they've botched with, you know, that scenario.
00:15:17And they've gotten lucky.
00:15:18Like the Titans turned around and threw up all over themselves.
00:15:21So it didn't put any extra points up on the board for the opponent that happened against
00:15:24Miami as well.
00:15:26It should be more costly than it's been, but their inability to operate at the end of the
00:15:32first half is mind blowing because they, they, after the first game, like Gerard was asked
00:15:37about it and he was like, yeah, it was bad.
00:15:40And I think even after the second one, he was like, yeah, we need to learn from these.
00:15:43He do it.
00:15:44All that.
00:15:45Uh, didn't he call it like a carbon copy after the second time?
00:15:47Yeah.
00:15:48No, he knew.
00:15:49Cause it is, it's the same free.
00:15:50This one was a little different because they started moving the ball and that's what kills
00:15:53me.
00:15:54It's like, you know, it's like foot 14 yards, Kendrick Bourne, uh, intermediate out nine
00:15:58yards, Kendrick Bourne, intermediate out.
00:16:00He's getting to the sideline.
00:16:01He's stopping the clock.
00:16:02The Titans were giving that to you.
00:16:03Not to like take anything away from mayor born, but that's not exactly putting it in
00:16:07the keyhole.
00:16:08It's, it's not exactly the, you know, the crisp route that's getting him.
00:16:11He's just open.
00:16:12He's just open.
00:16:13The Titans weren't covering that route.
00:16:14They were continually giving it to second and one on a two minute trail.
00:16:18Take a freaking shot, man.
00:16:21You're going to have one, maybe two more plays to pick that up.
00:16:24You should, there's, you don't have the time to be hype focused on that one yard.
00:16:29And by the way, you don't have the run game for it either.
00:16:32So this one was a little different, I guess, and how they botched it, but they botched
00:16:37it again.
00:16:38And it's, it's, it's now four times in nine games.
00:16:44Plus if you want to throw the one, if you want to say they should have pushed it, pushed
00:16:47it against the jets.
00:16:48Yes.
00:16:49They didn't punt back.
00:16:50I think I said this on the sports of today.
00:16:52I'll give him credit for one and a half out of six.
00:16:57What is that as, as, as a percentage, 1.5 out of six, it's 25%.
00:17:05So quarter of the time, they're getting that right.
00:17:06That is a key situation you need to be getting.
00:17:09And I'm not saying they need to score a touchdown every time.
00:17:13You should not be punting the ball back.
00:17:15Not with the significant amount of time left on the clock.
00:17:18And they've done that four or six times.
00:17:21You can't have it.
00:17:22You just, there's no other way to put it.
00:17:24You can't have it.
00:17:25And I'm sure we'll have this discussion again in a week or two, because at this point, I,
00:17:29I just don't have faith in them to fix it because they haven't fixed it.
00:17:33It's kind of insane how many just times they've been put in that opportunity to begin with.
00:17:37And then yeah, now that they've been put in this opportunity, they keep botching the situation.
00:17:41So I had to go back when I was writing about this post game, I had to go back to my last
00:17:47two post game columns and make sure I didn't copy myself and make sure I didn't plagiarize
00:17:51myself.
00:17:52Cause I'm like, I've written about this so many times.
00:17:54I don't know like how many ways I can make this point differently.
00:17:57Cause I don't want to be repetitive, but goodness just keeps coming up.
00:18:01I just, I mean, yeah, you complete two, you pick up 25 yards on two completions and Drake
00:18:07may is the best thing you got going for you.
00:18:09I don't get why you take it out of his, his hands there.
00:18:12Like you have to get that one yard, I guess.
00:18:14Yeah.
00:18:15If, if you imagine if you throw it twice, you're going to be able to pick up the first
00:18:19down and keep this thing moving.
00:18:21So a puzzling, puzzling decision there wasted opportunity for potential points in a game
00:18:27that went to overtime and you could have used some points.
00:18:30So they botched another one there.
00:18:32So before we get to kind of the last questionable coaching decision, I want to tell you guys

00:19:07He's taken on the box tonight.
00:19:09So Baker Mayfield, I know he's down a couple of receivers, but you can put Baker Mayfield
00:19:13in your lineup.
00:19:14Uh, Pat Mahomes, Patriots legend, Juju Smith Schuster.
00:19:17If you want to put him in there and speaking of Juju prize picks is the only real money

00:19:49All right, the last kind of coaching decision that's been debated, um, since yesterday is
00:19:56the two point conversion, uh, at the end of the game, you know, Drake has that spectacular
00:20:01play.
00:20:0211.28 seconds.
00:20:03I, I believe it was running all around the backfield.
00:20:07He hits a remandre Stevenson in the end zone.
00:20:10Oh, what happened to Barth there?
00:20:16Did we lose them?
00:20:17We might've lost them, but, um, Drake running around, he hit Stevenson to go down.
00:20:25Oh,
00:20:26I was still trying to bring my other one in.
00:20:28Hang on.
00:20:30I, they don't construction outside my building.
00:20:32It's been screwed with the internet all day, but, um, yeah, you, you, you score you're
00:20:37down one.
00:20:38They kick the extra point, take the game into overtime.
00:20:40Uh, did you like that call or would you have been like, Hey, we're a two and six football
00:20:46team on the road.
00:20:48Let's just try to win this game here and now and go for the two point conversion.
00:20:53Yeah.
00:20:54I, uh, I, I don't want to say I liked the decision.
00:20:59I just, I think it's a toss up.
00:21:01So first of all, going for two, there's not as common as everybody seems to think it is.
00:21:06There's been, I went back to 2015 when they moved the PAT back, there's been six instances
00:21:12in the regular season where a team scored a touchdown to go down one pending the PAT
00:21:17in the final 10 seconds of the game for those teams kicked the extra point.
00:21:21Now they went one and three in overtime.
00:21:22So maybe that supports going for two, uh, one team got the two point conversion.
00:21:27One team didn't, I, I don't know that that's informative because these are all very different
00:21:32situations.
00:21:33Patrick Holmes was the quarterback in one game.
00:21:34I think, um, Colt McCoy was the quarterback in one of them.
00:21:38Like it's irrelevant.
00:21:39Right.
00:21:40So that's just historical.
00:21:41Like, cause I've seen people say, Oh, of course you go for two in college.
00:21:46You do because college football's more driven on emotion and stuff like that.
00:21:50It would have been doing that off of impulse.
00:21:53I would have hated that for the Patriots.
00:21:57If you've listened to me, you know how you've heard me say this before the decision to go,
00:22:02whether it's for a two point conversion, whether it's for a fourth down or whatever, the decision
00:22:07to go is only as good as the play call.
00:22:10So if you're in a situation where you, you think it might benefit going for two, but
00:22:18you don't like any of your two point plays, you don't go right.
00:22:22Like it just doesn't make sense.
00:22:23I run the play that you don't think is going to be successful just because, well, you know,
00:22:27we should rate it even worse.
00:22:28Well, the math tells us to do it.
00:22:30Right.
00:22:31So you look at this Patriots team.
00:22:32They ran three prior to that game.
00:22:34They ran three snaps from the two yard line.
00:22:35The season only scored on one of them from inside the two they'd scored of on, I think
00:22:40four, they scored on four of nine plays.
00:22:43So just under 50%, they couldn't pick up the short yardage earlier in the game.
00:22:47They were struggling to get it in from the five.
00:22:48It took them three plays and some playground heroics by Drake may.
00:22:52I don't, I didn't feel as they started going, I saw people saying, do you go for two?
00:22:58I didn't feel particularly confident that they were going to get it if they did.
00:23:03And if they felt the same way, now that goes to another problem.
00:23:07You should go into every game with three, two point plays that you feel really good
00:23:10about.
00:23:12And they, they were one for one this year.
00:23:13They had the one against the jets last week with just check down or Mondrian.
00:23:17They had the one in London where, where Jalen Polk fell down.
00:23:21I do understand.
00:23:22It's not good, but I do understand if they didn't feel good about the ability to pick
00:23:25up the two yards.
00:23:26And then you bring in the factor of, was the offense just gassed, right?
00:23:29And they didn't have a timeout.
00:23:31I was fine with it.
00:23:32Now, if you want to say, well, the defense was gassed to, you know, they're two and six.
00:23:36What do they have to lose?
00:23:38Drake may is, is doing all this.
00:23:40Like I'm not necessarily disagreeing with anybody who says they should have gone for
00:23:44two.
00:23:45I did.
00:23:46It's a real like football argument.
00:23:49It's an agree to disagree thing.
00:23:50Cause it comes down to philosophy.
00:23:51I don't think that there's a wrong decision there.
00:23:54I prefer kicking it, but I understand the argument for going for two.
00:23:58That's why this one doesn't bother me a ton.
00:23:59You know, what bothers me a ton is again, failing to get points at the end of the first
00:24:03half that present prevent that situation, botching your offensive line, not being able
00:24:08to stop the run in overtime, just like the Jags did the Titans body blow, body blow, body
00:24:13blow 5.1 yards for Gary on eight runs in overtime.
00:24:16Only one went for less than four yards.
00:24:19They just carved them up on the ground and overtime that happening, like defensive coach
00:24:24sending your unit out.
00:24:26That bothers me a lot more than kicking the extra point.
00:24:30I, I, it, I can't get fired up about it.
00:24:32I can't, I see the argument both ways.
00:24:35I would have kicked.
00:24:36I understand wanting to go for two.
00:24:38People are saying like that decision costs them the game.
00:24:40I don't think it did.
00:24:42I, cause that's implying that they would have gotten it.
00:24:44And I really don't think they would have gotten it.
00:24:47So go to overtime.
00:24:48Give yourself another chance.
00:24:49Extend the game.
00:24:50I, that's the one I was fine with.
00:24:52And I'm sure the comment people will say, look at Barth making excuses for the coaches
00:24:56ignoring the first 23 minutes of the show, but I I'm okay with that decision.
00:25:00That didn't bother me at all.
00:25:01Yeah.
00:25:02It didn't bother me too much either.
00:25:03I will say when they were marching down the field, I was kind of thinking like if you
00:25:09do score, cause I do like to be aggressive, especially when you're a bad football team,
00:25:13right?
00:25:14You're playing a one in six Titans team.
00:25:16Be aggressive.
00:25:17What do you have to lose?
00:25:19I was saying score.
00:25:20If you score, that would be the perfect time to call one of those design runs for Drake
00:25:25may, right?
00:25:26Like we saw the read option in the, in the preseason home game, his first touchdown AVP
00:25:31said this week, like we're going to bring that out not often, but maybe in important
00:25:35situations.
00:25:36I thought that would have been a great time to do that because yeah, they haven't been
00:25:41able to stop them on the ground pretty much all day.
00:25:44And that's, you know, put the ball in your best, in the hands of your best player.
00:25:48But you watch that drive, an 11 play drive, a fourth down conversion.
00:25:53And then the last play where he's running all around, like they were gassed.
00:25:56And, you know, he said that the emotions, um, he was just trying to catch his breath.
00:26:01I, I get, you know, just saying, okay, let's kick the extra point, which they almost missed,
00:26:07which that would have been another issue.
00:26:09But, uh, and like, let's trust the defense cause it is Mason Rudolph.
00:26:13He would have liked a little better performance, uh, in that overtime period.
00:26:16But yeah, it was shades of London then where, where they're just running the ball right
00:26:19down your throat.
00:26:20So it wasn't too fired up about that one way or another.
00:26:25But as you said, I definitely get the, uh, argument for it.
00:26:29And, you know, again, you're a two and six team, like maybe be aggressive, but get the
00:26:34extra point and go to overtime.
00:26:36So, um, those were the kind of three big coaching decisions.
00:26:40I don't know.
00:26:41Did you care at all about the wind factor and overtime playing into the wind?
00:26:45I mean, you should be keeping track of the wind when you're deciding which way to kick,
00:26:50pick up some grass and throw it like it made it sound like they didn't consider that and,
00:26:55and they maybe missed it.
00:26:56So I, it was a little vague.
00:26:57The answer was he saying that the wind changed and they adjust it or did he miss it?
00:27:03I mean, that's a bad miss.
00:27:04If they miss it.
00:27:05I didn't really understand that answer.
00:27:07They shouldn't have been going like, look, shouldn't have been going into the wind and
00:27:10overtime.
00:27:11That, that is another one that bugs me more than a two point.
00:27:13Don't be going into the wind and overtime, whether it was intentional, whether they missed
00:27:16it.
00:27:17I guess missing it is technically worse, but like, don't go into the wind and overtime
00:27:21one way or the other.
00:27:22Yep.
00:27:23And I think Drake kind of downplayed it today.
00:27:25He was on the radio a couple hours ago because he said after the game, you know, I threw
00:27:30it into the wind and I, you know, I got to put more on it.
00:27:34He kind of downplayed it today and just said, you know, he said that to make himself feel
00:27:37better.
00:27:39You missed the field goal going that same direction earlier in the game, in the first
00:27:43quarter.
00:27:44And, you know, it's just making things harder on yourself.
00:27:47If you're going into the wind, you know, in overtime, you might need those points.
00:27:49So it was kind of a weird answer that Mayo said this morning.
00:27:54He just said the wind changed from the beginning to the end of the game.
00:27:57I don't know, as you said, when that, when he's judging that off of, but right.
00:28:02Something you got to keep, keep track of because it can come back to haunt you and cost you
00:28:07there.
00:28:08Um, that's coaching staff again, some big, big kind of errors and mess ups, uh, in this
00:28:14one, but let's get into a little bit more of Drake may.
00:28:18They rode the rookie rollercoaster with him.
00:28:21Uh, 95 rushing yards that we talked about, uh, led the team that was the most scramble
00:28:27yards of any quarterback in a game this season.
00:28:29And he also threw 206 yards, uh, the game tying touchdown there at the end of regulation
00:28:35where again, he's running all around.
00:28:36But then he has two interceptions, one to end the game.
00:28:40He has got a strip sack late in the fourth quarter that gives Tennessee the lead.
00:28:44So again, that rollercoaster it's tough cause he's doing everything, you know, he, he is
00:28:51the offense.
00:28:52It was a one man show, but, uh, what'd you take from his performance in Tennessee yesterday?
00:28:58Yeah, I, his game right now screams to me just an internal dialogue of, I guess I'll
00:29:06have to do it myself.
00:29:07And I don't blame him.
00:29:08Like I understand why he thinks that wide receiver dropping balls left and right.
00:29:12Can't get a clean pocket.
00:29:14Um, if you look at it, he had 301 total yards.
00:29:18The Patriots, when you factor in sacks at 280.
00:29:21So he actually was responsible for more yards and the Patriots went on the books were total,
00:29:25which is a great way to sum up his game.
00:29:27Now.
00:29:28That's not like, that's not to say he was great.
00:29:30I don't know that I'm gonna call any quarterback that turned the ball over three times.
00:29:34Great.
00:29:35One of those is just a blown Reed rookie mistake.
00:29:38Can't have that.
00:29:39The fumble, you know, he was a little careless with the ball back there in the pocket to
00:29:44Michael hasty can probably do a better job jumping on that, but shouldn't have gotten
00:29:47it knocked out.
00:29:48And then the last one, I, everything he said after the game, a hundred percent, like, I,
00:29:52I understand what he saw, but given how difficult that throw is, you have to Michael hasty in
00:29:58the flat for seven yards, plenty of time left to get down the field, live another down,
00:30:03live another down there.
00:30:05And I know we all got excited.
00:30:06We thought it was the Tom Brady in Miami moment that popped into my head as that ball was
00:30:10in the air, but he's not Tom Brady.
00:30:13So like he was, it's that same thing where like overall, you like what you see because
00:30:19he's a guy they can build around and he's giving them every reason to get aggressive
00:30:24this off season and building around it, which is good, but that helps not coming for a while.
00:30:28And he's trying to do too much right now.
00:30:30And it's causing him to be careless with the football and make bad decisions.
00:30:34If this becomes a habit, his ceiling gets significantly capped.
00:30:39So they need to find ways to take a little bit off of his plate right now and then get
00:30:44the help in the off season.
00:30:45The turnovers have to come down, have to come down.
00:30:48He's given the ball away four times in essentially three games.
00:30:51That's not sustainable.
00:30:53Like the way he, that plus the rushing, the way he's playing right now is not sustainable.
00:30:58The flashes are there and there's plenty to build around, but he's got to be more careful
00:31:03with the football.
00:31:04And I think some of that is going to come with just getting more talent on the offense.
00:31:08Yeah.
00:31:09Yeah.
00:31:10I mean, he is a, he's a playmaker, right?
00:31:12He's not Matt Jones game manager.
00:31:15So that's part of the gig when you're, you know, a playmaker, you're going to take some
00:31:20risk and stuff like that.
00:31:22And he is only 22 and he is shouldering the load.
00:31:25So that stuff's going to come.
00:31:27But the highs and the ability to kind of elevate the offense right now is really optimistic.
00:31:34We got to talk Devon Godshaw said he's Josh Allen 2.0.
00:31:38It is a little similar, like the turnovers early in their career.
00:31:43Like I think they were both at like 5% right over 5% turnover worthy plays in their rookie
00:31:49year.
00:31:50And then Allen was able to get that down a little bit, you know, with different play
00:31:53callers, some help around him at the receiver position.
00:31:56But I think definitely in God shall even said like Drake is ahead of where Josh Allen
00:32:04was as a rookie.
00:32:05Like it is his rookie year was a disaster for interceptions every single game.
00:32:10Yeah.
00:32:11Like I think you're seeing the in-structure stuff when it's there and it's presentable.
00:32:16If there's protection and there's a throw to be made, like Drake is making that it's
00:32:19mostly accurate.
00:32:21I don't think there was as many sprayed this week.
00:32:25He was mostly accurate.
00:32:27So that was a positive.
00:32:28But yeah, I think there's just a lot of flashes, a lot of things to be optimistic about, but
00:32:36he is doing it all.
00:32:37And when he has to do that at this point in his career, there's going to be kind of those
00:32:42ups and downs and you're seeing that.
00:32:44So you just hope he learns from it, kind of gets that out of the system.
00:32:47As you said, better players around him, which hopefully will come in the future, should
00:32:51help that.
00:32:53You know, Godshaw even said players are going to want to start coming to play here with
00:32:57him, with a guy like that.
00:32:58So hopefully that helps.
00:32:59But I think it's pretty encouraging still what you saw yesterday and what what the ability
00:33:05is of him at the quarterback position.
00:33:08Yeah.
00:33:09Yeah.
00:33:10Um.
00:33:11Anything else on Drake just in general, but I feel like we're going to get to a broken
00:33:18record with him because I don't think the turnovers are going to slow down this year,
00:33:20unfortunately.
00:33:21And you're going to still see some spectacular plays.
00:33:23I mean, he made like three throws on the run yesterday that were on freaking believable.
00:33:28And it's just going to be, you know, finding that balance, the one, the pop, the little
00:33:32roll out to his right, lofted it over like four or five defenders.
00:33:36That was very pretty.
00:33:37I will say you're starting to see it is.
00:33:39Oops, sorry.
00:33:40Go ahead.
00:33:41No, you can go.
00:33:43It is Drake May adjacent.
00:33:46Do you feel any differently?
00:33:48What?
00:33:49Drake May adjacent?
00:33:50No.
00:33:51Drake May adjacent.
00:33:52Like this question is Drake May adjacent.
00:33:54Oh, do you feel any differently about what the Patriots top priority should be in the
00:33:59draft?
00:34:00Not really.
00:34:01All right.
00:34:02Tackle or wide receiver.
00:34:03Are you like picking one of those?
00:34:04Well, so I'm still, I still end of the day, want to see him take tackle.
00:34:05I still think that's the best move.
00:34:06I.
00:34:07You could.
00:34:08I'm starting to kind of see the argument for Tet McMillan or, or Travis Hunter.
00:34:09I still don't think it's the right pick, but I'm like, I don't want to phrase it because
00:34:10I'm going to have a bunch of people.
00:34:11Oh, you changed your mind.
00:34:12Like, no, still take a tackle.
00:34:13Yeah.
00:34:14Yeah.
00:34:15Yeah.
00:34:16Yeah.
00:34:17Yeah.
00:34:18Yeah.
00:34:19Yeah.
00:34:20Yeah.
00:34:21Yeah.
00:34:22Yeah.
00:34:23Yeah.
00:34:24Yeah.
00:34:25Yeah.
00:34:26Yeah.
00:34:27Yeah.
00:34:28Yeah.
00:34:29Yeah.
00:34:30Yeah.
00:34:31Yeah.
00:34:32Yeah.
00:34:33Yeah.
00:34:34Yeah.
00:34:35Yeah.
00:34:36Yeah.
00:34:37Yeah.
00:34:38Yeah.
00:34:39Yeah.
00:34:40Yeah.
00:34:41No, still take a tackle.
00:34:42I, I, I think that a wide receiver with the way Drake pays play could maybe have more
00:34:45of an impact than I initially thought.
00:34:47I still think tackle is going to have the most impact.
00:34:49I still think the picture would be left tackle.
00:34:51You want to talk to me about Arianza air seat.
00:34:52Maybe there's another guy in the mix and it's not we'll Campbell or Calvin Banks.
00:34:55Like we can totally talk about that, but yeah, it's, this is a good point.
00:35:02It's like a little guilty pleasure.
00:35:03I know it's probably not the best thing,
00:35:06and at the end of the day,
00:35:06I don't think I'm gonna do it, but.
00:35:07It's getting, it's getting, let me, all right.
00:35:11Here's how I really went.
00:35:13I still think they should take a tackle.
00:35:14It's getting harder and harder to say no to the receiver,
00:35:18basically, is where I'm at.
00:35:19But I'll just double down,
00:35:22go get the guy in free agency or via trade.
00:35:24Like, I'm doubling down on DK Metcalf, man.
00:35:27Like, if you put DK Metcalf in this offense with that guy,
00:35:30look the fuck out.
00:35:34Especially just with Tat, like the skillset,
00:35:37it would be a perfect match there.
00:35:40But so much of that.
00:35:41Metcalf too.
00:35:42Yeah, yeah, exactly.
00:35:43So maybe, are you even warming up to me?
00:35:47Don't welcome me to wide receiver group.
00:35:50I still tackle.
00:35:51End of the day, tackle.
00:35:53It should be a tackle.
00:35:54Getting a little harder to say no to the receiver.
00:35:56It's fun to picture.
00:35:57I'm having more fun with the block than I thought I would.
00:35:59You wanna make people really mad?
00:36:00Are you maybe warming up to edge in the first round?
00:36:05No, you're not there yet.
00:36:06I wouldn't hate if they went out
00:36:08and traded for Chase Young tomorrow,
00:36:09especially seeing what Barron Browning went for.
00:36:11I wouldn't hate that.
00:36:12But it's also too, like, this edge class is legit.
00:36:16And you're gonna get a really good player
00:36:18at the top of the second round.
00:36:19You're gonna get a potential impact player.
00:36:21That's not true at tackle.
00:36:23I don't think it's gonna be true at receiver.
00:36:25Like, the caliber of player that will be there
00:36:27at 34, 35, 36, the edge defender that will be there,
00:36:32the pass rusher that will be there
00:36:33is a much better player relative to his position
00:36:36than the receiver or tackle
00:36:37that will be there at that point.
00:36:38So no, I'm not going there with their pass rushers.
00:36:42Not that.
00:36:43I was just, like, it's November.
00:36:45So there's a long way to go with these things.
00:36:47But, you know, the worst thing you can do
00:36:51is overdraft at a position
00:36:53and get a guy who's not worth it.
00:36:54So if maybe these tackles don't prove worthy
00:36:57of a top 10 pick,
00:36:58or, you know, we've talked about Tett
00:37:00being a little inconsistent.
00:37:01If, you know, you study them a little bit more
00:37:03and you see that and you're not sold on a top 10 pick
00:37:07and, you know, the best edge player is sitting there
00:37:10maybe after you trade down a few spots.
00:37:12Like, that's when I would say
00:37:13maybe that becomes into a consideration.
00:37:15The trade down Tett McMillan Ariante air C package
00:37:20does look pretty good right now.
00:37:21That would be a dream.
00:37:22That would be a dream, so.
00:37:24All right, yeah, that's a little draft talk.
00:37:28But Drake May, the only other thing I'll say on Drake
00:37:31is you are, Tennessee played pretty much all zone coverage.
00:37:34And that was something we talked about.
00:37:36Like he took off the first or second play of scrimmage
00:37:40that long run when they were at man.
00:37:41And then they said, scratch that.
00:37:43We played over 85% zone coverage.
00:37:46So you're starting to see how defenses
00:37:49kind of will start to guard him a little bit differently
00:37:52with the threat of his legs.
00:37:54So, but optimistic, encouraging stuff for the most part.
00:37:58So before I wanna get to a few other rookies
00:38:02on the offensive side of the ball,
00:38:03but very quickly before we do that,
00:38:05game time, we all love going to football games

00:39:27What time is it?
00:39:28Game time.
00:39:29All right, a few other rookies there
00:39:32on the offensive side of the ball.
00:39:33I wanna talk about Jalen Polk and Javon Baker,
00:39:36the receivers.
00:39:37Polk comes back from the concussion he missed last week.
00:39:40He only played nine snaps, gets called for two penalties.
00:39:44Gerard Mayo said this morning, you know,
00:39:46they weren't great calls.
00:39:48He didn't love the hold.
00:39:49He kind of blamed the illegal shift on the quarterbacks,
00:39:53making sure everyone's gotta get set,
00:39:55but he put himself in that position.
00:39:58And then he didn't get, he got one target.
00:40:00It was the interception, wasn't really Polk's fault,
00:40:03but no catches, two penalties,
00:40:06not a great showing from Polk.
00:40:07And then Baker, he only played four snaps.
00:40:10He ran two routes.
00:40:11He got open on both routes.
00:40:14Didn't get the ball because of past protection issues.
00:40:16So would like to see more Javon Baker.
00:40:19And it's tough right now to see a role for Jalen Polk
00:40:24in the offense with his play, what he's showing right now.
00:40:28Yeah, I think I've seen enough.
00:40:30And I know I was saying last week,
00:40:31you gotta get him back on the field.
00:40:32You gotta let him work through it.
00:40:33He's lost right now just with the penalties and all that.
00:40:37Javon Baker's a little different.
00:40:39He actually got open.
00:40:40I think he had, what, five offensive snaps?
00:40:41Did get open on one of them.
00:40:42Drake May didn't have enough time to get him the ball, but.
00:40:44Both of them he got open.
00:40:46Yeah, he did.
00:40:48So I keep throwing him out there a little bit.
00:40:51It's not good with Jalen Polk right now.
00:40:53It's just not good.
00:40:53And you gotta sit him down
00:40:55and let him figure it out in practice
00:40:56because it's not fair to everybody else.
00:40:58You're at the point where like the guy's hurting the offense
00:41:02every time he's on the field.
00:41:03And I've talked about this before.
00:41:04Ideally what's best for Drake May
00:41:06and what's best for Jalen Polk are the same thing
00:41:07because you want to develop both players.
00:41:09That's not the case right now.
00:41:11It's not.
00:41:11You gotta default to what's best for Drake May.
00:41:13He's a quarterback.
00:41:14Yep.
00:41:16Yeah, it's tough.
00:41:17I don't want to put the bus labeled on him
00:41:20because it's seven or eight games
00:41:24into his rookie year there,
00:41:25but it hasn't been an encouraging start.
00:41:27I mean, I hate to do this generally
00:41:31when it comes to wide receivers.
00:41:32If it starts this way, it continues this way.
00:41:35Generally first year production is indicative
00:41:37of what the career is going to be.
00:41:39That's been the trend in the last five or six years.
00:41:40We have a couple of outliers here and there,
00:41:41but generally you start strong.
00:41:45You're going to be a good player.
00:41:46You don't start strong.
00:41:48You're not.
00:41:48You don't have many guys that get it going
00:41:50their second, third, fourth year.
00:41:51You also don't have many guys
00:41:52that have a great rookie year in fall off.
00:41:54It's generally pretty indicative.
00:41:55So, you know, for a guy like Javon Baker,
00:41:57it's a little different because he just hasn't played.
00:41:59So we don't really know.
00:42:00He's like Booty last year.
00:42:02Yeah. Like like, yeah.
00:42:03Kashawn Booty doesn't get, he played one game.
00:42:05We never saw really what he was going to be.
00:42:08So that's different.
00:42:09I'm talking about when guys play as rookies,
00:42:12generally the first year is indicative
00:42:14of what kind of player they're going to be.
00:42:15And it's not great for Jalen Polk right now.
00:42:19Yep. Yeah.
00:42:20Someone asked Baker was open.
00:42:22He, again, he ran two routes.
00:42:23They dialed up like this deep play action shot to him
00:42:26and he ran a nice route.
00:42:28He saw the explosiveness
00:42:29that the coaches are talking about.
00:42:31Got open, but there was a pass rusher in Drake May's face.
00:42:35You know, it was a longer developing play.
00:42:37So he couldn't get it out to him.
00:42:39And then his second route was just kind of like a
00:42:41one of those backside digs that you see May throw a lot.
00:42:45And he got open again.
00:42:46But I think that was when Leighton Robinson was still in
00:42:48and he got beat.
00:42:49So there was a guy in Drake's face again.
00:42:51So he couldn't get him the ball.
00:42:52So two routes and he gets open twice.
00:42:54I would like to see more Javon Baker.
00:42:57And I imagine we might start to see more of him too,
00:42:59more than four snaps.
00:43:01So encouraging and limited, limited, limited action.
00:43:04So, and someone says,
00:43:06I'll be calling for another Taekwondo breakout next year.
00:43:09I was not.
00:43:09Yeah, Brian.
00:43:10Why are you calling for all these Taekwondo breakouts?
00:43:13I think you got Alex's Ron co-hosts on this one.
00:43:17That's actually.
00:43:18Yeah, this is not catch 22s on Thursday.
00:43:20That should be an Evan question.
00:43:22I think our stance was pretty, pretty clear about Taekwondo.
00:43:24Yeah.
00:43:28Anything else on offense?
00:43:29I mean, Hunter Henry, Mr. Reliable, as always.
00:43:34I would like to see more Antonio Gibson.
00:43:38He only played like eight or nine snaps.
00:43:40And that goes back to, you know,
00:43:41we haven't talked about running Mondrian to the ground
00:43:45a lot like we did earlier in the season,
00:43:47but he's Gibson is an explosive player.
00:43:50I can't imagine that would hurt you more.
00:43:52I'd like to see more of him,
00:43:53but anything else in your notes on the offensive side
00:43:57of the ball before we wrap that up and go to the defense?
00:44:00Hunter Henry, you can say a clock to him.
00:44:02Mr. Reliable.
00:44:04Yep.
00:44:05Good on him.
00:44:06Good player.
00:44:07Good, good player.
00:44:08But yeah, defense just more of the same struggles
00:44:14at the line of scrimmage in the run game,
00:44:15the run fits, shedding blocks.
00:44:19You saw, we talked about a little bit earlier there.
00:44:21It felt like the London game again,
00:44:23where, you know, they're just running the ball
00:44:25right at you in overtime and you can't stop it.
00:44:29They had issues with the outside run game.
00:44:32Again, like they did against the Jets,
00:44:33Tony Pollard averaged nearly five yards to carry,
00:44:35you know, running to the outside edges,
00:44:38broke a couple lawn ones.
00:44:39He had that 30 yard explosive toss early in the game.
00:44:41So just more of the same issues there,
00:44:45struggle to get off the field on third downs too.
00:44:47It just, it kind of feels like the end of the half situation
00:44:51on the offensive side.
00:44:52It's just the same things over and over
00:44:55kind of plaguing the defense here.
00:44:57And you saw it again against Tennessee.
00:45:00Yeah, you know, it's tough to talk about
00:45:02without just being like,
00:45:03well, you remember, we talked about this.
00:45:04You remember, we talked about that.
00:45:07If you can't stop the run, nothing else is going to matter.
00:45:10If a team can run for five yards per carry on you,
00:45:12there's not a ton of incentive for them to get creative
00:45:14if they can just line up and push you back.
00:45:16And that's happening right now.
00:45:17Look, credit to Jelani Tavia.
00:45:18I actually thought he had a good game.
00:45:20He was better.
00:45:21Second week in a row, he's kind of improved.
00:45:23So that's encouraging,
00:45:24but it's going to take more than him turning it around
00:45:26to fix this thing.
00:45:27Again, in overtime, 5.1 yards per carry on the ground.
00:45:30They, just like the Jaguars did,
00:45:32they saw a chance to close out the game
00:45:34and went body, blow, body, blow, body, blow.
00:45:36Can't have it.
00:45:37Just can't have it.
00:45:38Yep.
00:45:39Yeah. Watching it back, Tavai,
00:45:41he gave up a couple of plays,
00:45:43especially one explosive play action,
00:45:46but you saw much more splash plays from him.
00:45:49Like he had the early tackle for loss,
00:45:51the interception on the goal line,
00:45:53obviously on the tip drill.
00:45:54He was really good as a pass rusher.
00:45:56I think PFF had him as like a 60% win rate.
00:46:00Yeah. They also had Daniel quality
00:46:01as the highest graded player for the Patriots in this game.
00:46:04So I, they might've gotten the wrong tape.
00:46:06That was interesting.
00:46:07Okay. That's yeah.
00:46:10They're not loading right now, so I can't see that,
00:46:12but yeah.
00:46:13Yeah. I'd want to keep that off the internet too.
00:46:16Yeah. It's a, it's definitely better than Tavai,
00:46:19even though he's still, you know, there's a player too.
00:46:22You'd like him to make that he doesn't.
00:46:25Anfernee Jennings, another monster role
00:46:27and kind of more production.
00:46:30He's not going to be, you know, a top tier pass rusher,
00:46:33but he led the team with four pressures, five run stops too.
00:46:36So kind of a typical game for Anfernee Jennings.
00:46:40I will say someone asked in the chat here, I just lost it,
00:46:43but what'd you think of Christian Gonzalez's performance
00:46:47right here?
00:46:48Someone said that he had a bad game.
00:46:49He had one pass breakup, which was beautiful coverage,
00:46:52but Ridley had five catches on him.
00:46:53It was actually, I think next gen finished it
00:46:56with three catches for 51 yards on Gonzalez.
00:46:59So some good, but some bad, especially in overtime,
00:47:02he gave up one reception kind of downfield,
00:47:05but what'd you think of Gonzo's game?
00:47:07He was fine.
00:47:07They were running these weird zone coverages,
00:47:09just kind of passing guys off to the middle of the field
00:47:11and they didn't have anybody in the middle.
00:47:13I don't know what that was, but you know,
00:47:16it wasn't his best game.
00:47:17I wouldn't say he was dominant.
00:47:18If he can give you that week in and week out,
00:47:20he's number one corner.
00:47:21I don't have too much of a problem with it.
00:47:22It wasn't his best game,
00:47:23but like he was so good against Adams last week.
00:47:26He wasn't that, it wasn't that,
00:47:28but I thought he played competitive
00:47:30against a good receiver.
00:47:31He was fine.
00:47:32I wouldn't call him an up.
00:47:32I wouldn't call him a down.
00:47:33He's sort of there.
00:47:35Yeah, not his best game, but.
00:47:38The bigger Jonathan Jones was,
00:47:40they were picking on Jonathan Jones quite a bit.
00:47:41And I wonder if, you know,
00:47:43the Patriots are getting really bad safety play right now,
00:47:45especially free safety.
00:47:46I wonder if you start playing Jonathan Jones
00:47:48at free safety because he still has the speed
00:47:50and the athleticism of the instincts.
00:47:52The coverage skills just aren't there
00:47:54like they used to be.
00:47:55Maybe he's dealing with an injury or something.
00:47:56You put him at free safety.
00:47:57So you get a body there, a veteran there,
00:48:00and then maybe it's more opportunities for Alex Austin,
00:48:02who's going to come off IR soon.
00:48:04Marco Wilson struggled in this game.
00:48:06I wouldn't give him more reps.
00:48:07So maybe it's more opportunities for Alex Austin.
00:48:09Maybe Marcella Stiles starts playing a little bit
00:48:11on defense, something like that.
00:48:13Yeah, they missed Kyle Duggar, definitely on the backend.
00:48:16You know, Del Pettis had some moments in the run game.
00:48:20I think Hawkins, the first play of overtime,
00:48:23or the first completion of overtime
00:48:24was kind of on Jalen Hawkins.
00:48:26So they definitely missed Duggar.
00:48:28Was it Hawkins or, I think it was Hawkins, right?
00:48:31I'm surprised they didn't call a penalty on that one
00:48:33where he came over the top and hit Ridley.
00:48:35Now they shouldn't have.
00:48:36I'm glad they picked up the flag.
00:48:37But in the modern NFL, that's usually a penalty.
00:48:39That felt like that could have been bad
00:48:41and it was avoidable.
00:48:43That's two weeks in a row on him too.
00:48:45Remember you had the one last week,
00:48:47like down the right sideline near the goal line
00:48:49where he kind of hit a guy late?
00:48:52Yeah, yeah.
00:48:53And he's trying to set the tone, I get it,
00:48:55but this team doesn't have that kind of margin for error.
00:48:58Yep.
00:49:00All right, any other notes to wrap up the defense?
00:49:05Oh, I can't say.
00:49:06I wrote down Gerard Mayo this morning said
00:49:09they might be getting close to Christian Barmore,
00:49:12maybe returning.
00:49:13He was talking to the practice field
00:49:15in terms of the practice field, getting back in practice.
00:49:17So maybe we're getting close to Barmore,
00:49:20which make sure he's like 150% healthy.
00:49:24We don't need to rush him back here,
00:49:26but he would obviously, obviously be a big boost
00:49:29to the defense and the defensive line
00:49:31and helping some of these issues in the run game
00:49:34and rushing the passer.
00:49:35But that was your Christian Barmore update.
00:49:38I don't know.
00:49:38Do you have any thoughts on his potential?
00:49:40I wouldn't rush him back.
00:49:41Like if he can play great, they could obviously use him,
00:49:43but you're two and seven, that's a very important player.
00:49:46I wouldn't push it with him.
00:49:48Maybe like, it might be one thing for like his mental health
00:49:51just to let him get back on the field and get involved.
00:49:52I could see that being great for him.
00:49:54And even maybe, you know, playing a game or two
00:49:56at the end of the season,
00:49:57just so he's not going into next year totally cold.
00:49:59I get that.
00:49:59But I wouldn't, no need to rush, no need to push it.
00:50:03If he can't get back on the field,
00:50:05then he can't get back on the field.
00:50:06I wonder if they do something like,
00:50:09remember Cameron McGrone,
00:50:11they drafted him off a torn ACL
00:50:13and he wasn't gonna play that year,
00:50:16but they did designate him or designated him
00:50:18to return late in the year
00:50:19so he could take part in three weeks of practice.
00:50:21Like knowing full well that he wasn't gonna play,
00:50:23it was just to get him out there.
00:50:24I wonder if maybe they do something similar
00:50:26for Christian Barmore where, you know,
00:50:28he goes back out there, so he's on the field,
00:50:30but like, he's just not gonna play.
00:50:32Yeah.
00:50:33And I'll throw this into,
00:50:34Zemin is towards ACL, I don't think he's come back.
00:50:35He's done.
00:50:36Yep.
00:50:37Yeah, definitely no reason to rush him back,
00:50:39especially on a two and seven football team here,
00:50:42but Cameron McGrone is a good callback.
00:50:46I thought he was gonna be awesome.
00:50:46I love Cameron McGrone in the draft, but.
00:50:49I like the philosophy,
00:50:50but I understood it was a risk with the pick.
00:50:52Yeah, definitely, definitely.
00:50:54Worth the risk.
00:50:55What was that, a fifth, sixth round pick?
00:50:57It was worth the risk for a player
00:50:58with that type of athleticism,
00:51:00even though there was some injury risk, as you saw, but.
00:51:03Yeah.
00:51:04That is the defense.
00:51:05Very quickly, special teams.
00:51:09It was inevitable that Marcus Jones would pop a big return.
00:51:11He did two, a 40 plus one earlier
00:51:15and then a 20 plus yard punt return
00:51:17to help set up that game tying drive to end regulation.
00:51:20So he's been awesome.
00:51:21He was, he's just an elite punt returner.
00:51:24There's not much more to say about that.
00:51:26Although I was surprised Tennessee kicked to him
00:51:28at the end there.
00:51:29Yeah, that was as bad a coaching decision
00:51:32as there was in that game.
00:51:33You can see why they're a historically bad
00:51:35special teams unit there.
00:51:37So Marcus Jones is a game changer in that area.
00:51:41Bryce Berenger, not his best performance
00:51:44that 15 yard punt, a shank right off the foot.
00:51:48You could see he knew it immediately.
00:51:50He had another one later.
00:51:51It wasn't a shank, but he didn't hit it great,
00:51:54but he ended up getting a nice roll.
00:51:55So it was still a 45 yarder,
00:51:57but not Bryce's best performance.
00:51:59And then Joey Sly, you don't want to get on him too much.
00:52:02It was a 56 yarder that he missed,
00:52:04but you missed a field goal in a game.
00:52:07You lost by three points and he's got three misses now.
00:52:11One was blocked, but they all came in one score losses.
00:52:15So those have all proved costly.
00:52:16Again, it was a long kick, but he's got a big leg.
00:52:19That's why he's in here.
00:52:21I mean, the training camp competition,
00:52:22like he was way more consistent from 50 plus yards.
00:52:25So you'd like to see him make that again,
00:52:28especially in a game that went to overtime
00:52:30that you lost by three points.
00:52:32I mean, he's here, he's here because of the big leg.
00:52:33Like that's why he's here.
00:52:34And that costs me.
00:52:35I think there's something like
00:52:36he's only missed three kicks this year,
00:52:37but they've all come in one score games.
00:52:40Yeah.
00:52:41Another one where the,
00:52:42I talked earlier about the turnover advantage.
00:52:44I didn't talk as much about it as I wanted to,
00:52:46but basically you can read about it on 985sports.com.
00:52:49Titans came in most giveaways,
00:52:51fewest takeaways, worst turnover margin.
00:52:53Like the Patriots had a chance
00:52:54to definitively win the turnover battle.
00:52:56That would have helped them out.
00:52:57They didn't.
00:52:58The one other spot,
00:52:58they should have had a definitive advantages
00:53:00on special teams.
00:53:01Titans had, we talked about this on Thursday, Brian,
00:53:03historically bad special teams unit.
00:53:05You know, with Marcus Jones returns,
00:53:07maybe they had a advantage.
00:53:09It was hardly definitive.
00:53:11They didn't win the battle on special teams
00:53:12by nearly enough.
00:53:13That's on Joey Sly.
00:53:14That's on Bryce Beringer primarily.
00:53:16Whereas in past weeks,
00:53:17we've talked more about the coverage players.
00:53:18Sly misses a kick and almost missed that extra point
00:53:21at the end of the game.
00:53:22Beringer shanks one,
00:53:23Ponti had another one that was like a half shank.
00:53:27They both left opportunities on the table.
00:53:30Yep.
00:53:32All right.
00:53:32So any last thoughts on that game?
00:53:35Just anything in general that we missed or didn't get to?
00:53:40No, I think that's it.
00:53:41All right.
00:53:42I do want to do-
00:53:43I sort of talked about it earlier.
00:53:44Jeffrey Simmons, criminally underrated player.
00:53:47Yeah, he's awesome.
00:53:48Criminally underrated player.
00:53:49Give that, I know he's been on bad Titan teams
00:53:51for a long time,
00:53:52and the position he plays isn't sexy.
00:53:55Give that man his flowers.
00:53:56He can freaking play.
00:53:58Yep.
00:53:59Let me ask you,
00:54:00would Jeffrey Simmons be the best player
00:54:01on the Patriots right now?
00:54:03Ooh, probably.
00:54:06Yeah.
00:54:07Right?
00:54:08I mean, it's just,
00:54:09is he better than Christian Gonzalez or Drake May?
00:54:12Well, Drake May is kind of his own thing,
00:54:13because it's been four games.
00:54:14But yeah, he'd be the most impactful player
00:54:17on their defense.
00:54:18And look, they have a guy like that in Barmore,
00:54:20so that's not,
00:54:23but you get like,
00:54:24I never hear,
00:54:25when we talk about the great defense players in this league,
00:54:27nobody ever talks about Jeffrey Simmons.
00:54:28I've been a fan of his for years.
00:54:30Mention him next time.
00:54:31Good player.
00:54:32Yep.
00:54:32That's the downside of being stuck in Tennessee.
00:54:36Did you get a little upset watching his co-partner there,
00:54:41Tavondre Sweat,
00:54:41just dominate the run game?
00:54:43That was a guy we talked a lot about.
00:54:45Yeah.
00:54:46I mean, look,
00:54:47I said it in the spring,
00:54:48like he never made sense for the Patriots.
00:54:50That was a luxury pick
00:54:52that they didn't have the luxury to make.
00:54:54But another,
00:54:55I mean, those two together,
00:54:56Simmons is 28,
00:54:57so they still have like three years together.
00:55:01That's gonna be,
00:55:02good luck,
00:55:03anything up the middle against the Titans.
00:55:04That's a hell of a pairing.
00:55:06And I liked that Tennessee.
00:55:09I,
00:55:09it's funny that the Titans are as bad as they are.
00:55:11I actually think they did a good job
00:55:12of building that roster.
00:55:13Injuries haven't helped,
00:55:14but Tony Pollard,
00:55:15good addition.
00:55:16Calvin Ridley,
00:55:17good addition.
00:55:18Oh, you can't pivot now.
00:55:20You were calling them old all,
00:55:22all off season.
00:55:22Legerius Sneed.
00:55:24You know what I,
00:55:25fair.
00:55:25Okay, fair.
00:55:26But, well,
00:55:27these aren't old players that I'm naming.
00:55:28Like how many of the old guys worked out?
00:55:30DeAndre Hopkins traded.
00:55:33Jamal Adams.
00:55:33Jamal Adams asked for his release
00:55:35so he could go to a contender
00:55:36and now nobody will sign him,
00:55:38which way to go.
00:55:39No, all right.
00:55:40So I didn't like all their moves.
00:55:41That's fair.
00:55:42Good job calling me out.
00:55:43But I think they built like a decent core.
00:55:46They got good players.
00:55:48Yeah.
00:55:48The quarterback just blows.
00:55:50And they've got to hope that they can,
00:55:51you know,
00:55:52keep this thing together,
00:55:53mostly this off season.
00:55:55And then they are a team that should be aggressive
00:55:57in moving up in the draft
00:55:58and trying to get,
00:56:00you know,
00:56:00one of those top quarterbacks.
00:56:01If they can drop Cam Ward into that thing,
00:56:04you probably have a playoff team.
00:56:06Assuming again,
00:56:07they're like,
00:56:08the injuries are,
00:56:09forget the guys that are in the injury report.
00:56:11They have a number of guys on IR too.
00:56:12Like they're banged up to all hell,
00:56:14but they,
00:56:16they have some pieces.
00:56:17They,
00:56:17they have some pieces.
00:56:18They're,
00:56:19I don't know that they're a quarterback away,
00:56:20but they're close.
00:56:23Yep.
00:56:24Even their offensive line,
00:56:25like JC Latham,
00:56:26Peter Skowronski,
00:56:27they signed Lloyd Cushenberry
00:56:29who got hurt,
00:56:29of course,
00:56:30yesterday.
00:56:32And then the interesting guy,
00:56:33Dylan Radunes,
00:56:34who's been starting for them and playing well.
00:56:35That,
00:56:36we're going to be talking about JC Latham,
00:56:38probably this off season.
00:56:39Cause he's a guy who flipped from the right side
00:56:41to the left side
00:56:42and has done it fairly successful.
00:56:44I know it's,
00:56:44it's tough,
00:56:45but yeah,
00:56:47they,
00:56:48they have some good players down there in Tennessee,
00:56:49but they need the quarterback.
00:56:51So I do want to wrap up just with some quick
00:56:54trade deadline updates,
00:56:55because that is tomorrow at 4 PM.
00:56:58We are less than 24 hours away from the trade deadline.
00:57:02So very quickly before we get into that,
00:57:03we also,
00:57:03of course,
00:57:04we've talked about PXG.
00:57:06The weather is looking nice.
00:57:07We have a couple of days in the seventies.
00:57:09This weekend is looking nice in the low sixties.
00:57:12So make sure you get out on the golf course.
00:57:14And if you are looking to improve your golf game,
00:57:16hit the ball straight or farther,
00:57:18not having to worry about having,
00:57:19hitting everything pure to make it a good shot,
00:57:22head over to PXG.
00:57:25Barth and I went over for a fitting at the PXG
00:57:27in Framingham.
00:57:28And we upgraded the clubs in our bag immediately.
00:57:31We both got a new set of black ops irons.
00:57:34You get to go into the simulator,
00:57:37hit 50,
00:57:3860 balls,
00:57:39all the different clubs,
00:57:41the shafts,
00:57:42the heads,
00:57:43different grips.
00:57:43And you get to see all your data,
00:57:45live action on the track and data on the simulator,
00:57:48your ball speeds,
00:57:49your distances.
00:57:50It can help fix if you're spraying the ball.
00:57:53I always have a slice.
00:57:54So they helped fix my slice a little bit and added almost 40
00:57:57yards,
00:57:58a distance onto my shot,
00:58:00which has made a huge difference out there on the course.
00:58:03And if you are looking to upgrade your bag,
00:58:06make sure you do so with PXG clubs and take your game to a
00:58:09whole new level for a limited time.
00:58:11You can save $10 per club.
00:58:13If you head over to pxg.com and use code C L N S that's
00:58:17pxg.com code C L N S to save $10 per club on your order,
00:58:23pxg.com code C L N S great Christmas gift.
00:58:28Christmas holidays coming around the corner.
00:58:30If anyone needs to golf this time of year.
00:58:32So apparently that's too hot.
00:58:36It's too dark outside right now.
00:58:38And 80 November is too dark,
00:58:41but Twilight, you got to get out after lunch.
00:58:44Exactly.
00:58:45Yeah. You got to get out early.
00:58:46So just wrap up very quickly.
00:58:49A couple of trade deadline notes.
00:58:52Kyle Duggar's name was floated out there over the weekend.
00:58:55We heard teams.
00:58:57This is a funny one.
00:58:58Teams calling about Christian Gonzalez.
00:59:00They quickly got told to go away.
00:59:02And I think the word was amusing on those calls.
00:59:06And then we saw Taekwondo and KJ Osborne,
00:59:09the two names that have been out there the most,
00:59:12they were inactive yesterday.
00:59:16Mike Reese had in his column that they might just outright
00:59:18release KJ Osborne if they can't find a trade partner.
00:59:21So are you expecting anything tomorrow?
00:59:23What'd you think on the Kyle Duggar,
00:59:25his name getting added into those talks?
00:59:27I would be stunned if that happens,
00:59:29but just any thoughts here under 24 hours
00:59:33from the trade deadline.
00:59:35I'm not expecting much.
00:59:36One, if not both those receivers to either move
00:59:38or be released shortly after.
00:59:39If they make a move,
00:59:40it's going to be bottom of the roster depth,
00:59:42defensive line, maybe an offensive lineman,
00:59:45maybe, I don't know, maybe a cornerback.
00:59:49I'm not expecting a big splash.
00:59:50We're not expecting to do much.
00:59:51I think Gerard Mayo said on the radio today
00:59:53that like the trade deadlines are always overblown.
00:59:55It's not baseball.
00:59:56Right, I'd love for them to make the Montez Sweat trade.
00:59:59I don't think it's there.
01:00:01I kind of said it before,
01:00:01like Baron Browning was a guy that made sense to me.
01:00:03He just got traded.
01:00:05Chase Young, I'd still make a call on.
01:00:07That's about as far as I'd go off on them at this point.
01:00:10I think they move one or two smaller pieces,
01:00:12maybe add one, but I think it's going to be
01:00:16relatively quiet, quiet day tomorrow for the trade deadline.
01:00:20So I don't know,
01:00:21maybe there's something else people can focus on
01:00:22that's going on tomorrow.
01:00:24No, I don't think there's much trade deadline.
01:00:26Oh, Mactions tomorrow, right?
01:00:28Maction, there's Maction tomorrow.
01:00:30We got the Gold Glove winners yesterday.
01:00:32Maybe that has a couple of days hold, that story.
01:00:35Of course they dropped that on a rant.
01:00:37Of course they dropped Gold Glove winners.
01:00:38Sunday night at eight o'clock,
01:00:40Major League Baseball, finger on the pulse, as always.
01:00:43As always, but yeah, I would expect one of those receivers,
01:00:48either trade, release, and pretty quiet beyond that.
01:00:51I would love if that Montez Sweat deal was out there,
01:00:54but it just doesn't look like it's going to be.
01:00:57You mentioned Chase Young.
01:00:58I don't know if New Orleans is going to blow it up
01:01:00completely, like Carl Granderson on the other edge
01:01:03is the guy I would love if they could pry him away.
01:01:05He's under contract too, but I just don't know, again,
01:01:09if that move is going to be out there.
01:01:10So probably a relatively quiet deadline,
01:01:14but if something does happen,
01:01:15we will be back to break it down.
01:01:17I believe crossover episode with Taylor and Mike
