00:00Let's update on Typhoon Marseille. Let's talk to Pagasa Assistant Weather Services Chief, Chris Perez.
00:06Good morning and welcome back to Balitang Hali.
00:09Good morning, Raffy, and to all of our viewers.
00:12Yes. As of now, is there still a rapid intensification?
00:15And what is the possibility of this typhoon, Typhoon Marseille, to rise to the Super Typhoon category?
00:20Well, Raffy, if we compare the strength of this typhoon, it reached 24 hours.
00:25At 11 o'clock yesterday, the maximum wind was around 75 kilometers per hour.
00:30Now, it's 120 kilometers per hour.
00:32So, the last 24 hours, 45 kilometers per hour was the maximum strength of its sustained wind.
00:39So, that's one sign that the process of rapid intensification of Typhoon Marseille underwent during the last 24 hours.
00:47And in the next 2 to 3 days, even if we don't expect it,
00:51it's possible that a higher level of typhoon, meaning a stronger wind in the typhoon category,
00:57will reach it before it reaches the extreme northern zone or reaches the seas here in the extreme northern zone.
01:05So, just now or since yesterday, actually, let's tell our countrymen to be prepared for the possible approach of Typhoon Marseille here in the extreme northern zone area.
01:15Where is the possibility of rain and tropical cyclone wind signal due to the typhoon?
01:20Well, as of now, within 24 hours, we expect moderate to heavy rains here in the province of Cagayan.
01:28And as the typhoon approaches the northern zone, for example tomorrow,
01:32the areas that will receive the most rainfall will increase, Batanes, Cagayan and Apayaw.
01:37Until Thursday, it's possible that there will be intense torrential rains in Cagayan,
01:43moderate to heavy or heavy to intense in Apayaw, Ilocos Norte and Batanes.
01:48Meanwhile, moderate to heavy in Isabela, Abra, Ilocos Sur, Calinga and Mountain Province.
01:54So, let's remind our countrymen in the mentioned areas to be alert for possible floods,
02:00especially those who live in low-lying areas.
02:04In communities near rivers, it's possible that the water level will increase and there will be floods here on the riverside.
02:11It's also possible for landslides to occur in areas near the foot of the mountains,
02:16especially if our countrymen have been noticing or observing for a few days,
02:20that there are floods, even if they are weak, that can soften the parts of the mountains.
02:26Meanwhile, in terms of warning signals, Raffy, as of now, the number one warning signal is in Batanes,
02:32Cagayan, along with Boboyan Island, in the province of Isabela, Ilocos Norte, Apayaw,
02:38also in Abra, Calinga, Mountain Province, Ifugao, in the northern portion of Nuevo Vizcaya,
02:44there is also a number one warning signal in the northern portion of Tirino and in the northern portion of Aurora.
02:49And those areas that have warning signals, it's possible that there will be floods, sometimes there will be winds,
02:55and let's remind, as the storm approaches, it's possible that we will have high warning signals
03:00and those areas that have warning signals will increase,
03:03especially here in the northern zone and some parts of the central zone, Raffy.
03:08How severe is the rainfall brought by Mars and what will be the effect of this on the past floods?
03:15Well, as we can see, the movement of the floods in Mars,
03:18it doesn't have a direct effect on the areas that were previously affected by Christine,
03:24particularly in the Bicol region.
03:26If there will be rain in the mentioned areas, it's possible that it will be light to moderate.
03:31What we're really hoping for is for the areas that will experience rain,
03:35which are the majority of the northern zone and some parts of the central zone.
03:39However, we will continue to give updates as the storm approaches.
03:43Our Tropical Cyclone Bulletin and our Weather Advisory will be in touch about the heavy rains.
03:51I will also add that our gale warnings, the conditions of the oceans,
03:56especially around the northern zone area, it's possible that those areas will be affected.
04:01As much as possible, if there is a gale warning, we know that there will be a storm approaching,
04:06we should avoid letting our countrymen go out for a long time or go out to the oceans around the northern zone.
04:13And here in Metro Manila, what will be the effect of Mars?
04:16Well, what we can see, Raffy, if there will be rain in Metro Manila,
04:20while Mars is approaching the northern zone, it's possible that it will bring what we call
04:25northeasterly surface wind flow, like a light breeze.
04:29We don't expect that there will be a lot of rain that is directly associated with Mars here in Metro Manila
04:35this upcoming weekend.
04:37But as I mentioned, the areas in the northern zone, some parts of the central zone,
04:41especially the warning signals, should be prepared for, aside from the rain,
04:46strong winds that Mars will bring.
04:49What does it mean for the cloud cluster near Mindanao?
04:52What will be the effect of this?
04:54Well, we are looking at our latest satellite imagery,
04:57even though we can consider it as a trap or an extension of Mars,
05:02we expect that it is still possible for light to moderate rains,
05:06especially in the east and south part of Mindanao.
05:09We will continue to monitor and if necessary,
05:12our regional services division in Mindanao will issue localized thunderstorm and rainfall advisory
05:19regarding the cloud cluster here in the east part of Mindanao.
05:22Let's look forward to that.
05:23Thank you very much for your time this afternoon.
05:26Thank you very much and good morning to everyone.
05:29Chris Perez of Pag-asa.
