43:53There was something about second place in particular
43:56that struck me as,
43:57well, I can't believe we've never considered this before.
44:00There's something very neat
44:01about having three players on stage
44:05and trying to achieve second place out of three.
44:09I originally conceived of second place
44:11as this idea where there's these pre-filmed
44:13kind of taskmaster segments
44:15and people are doing challenges
44:17and they try to get second place.
44:18One, that's too much money.
44:20And two, like, let's just like simplify it.
44:22So then it just became, let's do it in studio.
44:24My thought was trying to think of like funny things
44:26to watch people try to get second place in.
44:30We wanted to come up with challenges
44:32that the cast wouldn't be able
44:34to base their own performance
44:35off of what they had just seen the previous person do.
44:37We thought about isolating the contestants
44:40so that they wouldn't know how somebody else did.
44:42We ultimately felt that we were gonna lose
44:44a lot of onstage chemistry by doing that.
44:47So we had to come up with a number of other creative ways
44:49to accomplish that.
44:51And as usual, I think that only benefited the episode
44:54because necessity is the mother of invention.
44:57The game is so elegant in its simplicity
45:00that if we're not careful, it could feel kind of small.
45:03So I like this idea of pushing it a little bit
45:05in every round by giving it something bigger.
45:08Sam came up with this really fun game mechanic
45:11of incorporating classic game shows into this episode.
45:13He was gonna do some sort of version of supermarket sweep.
45:16Got so excited and I wanted to do it so bad
45:19because I just envisioned an entire supermarket
45:23filled with puns and Sam's face on cereal boxes.
45:28It became, the price is not quite family-tude.
45:32And duh or no duh,
45:34which up until the last conceivable moment
45:37was deal or so-so deal.
45:40All they have to do is answer one question,
45:43deal or so-so deal?
45:46Paul had the brilliant idea to make it duh or no duh
45:50and so we made that graphic like the day before we aired.
45:52It's a little disturbing how many good game changer ideas
45:55occur to us 24 hours in advance of the shoot.
45:59An idea that we pitched that didn't make it
46:00into the final game was having to weigh out
46:03exactly one pound of rice in your hand
46:06and putting it on a scale.
46:08It's just really giving it your best shot
46:10and not knowing how anybody else was gonna do
46:12or how close you even are.
46:14I did pitch the idea where each player
46:16would have a candle in front of their podium
46:18and as the episode would go on,
46:20it would obviously go down because of it melting.
46:22The pitch was whoever has the middle candle
46:24at the end of the episode would win.
46:26But I think all candles just kind of
46:27go down with speed.
46:28I don't know what universe I was operating in.
46:30I actually didn't realize that they had cut bowling
46:33until we were really close to show time
46:35so I was super stressed.
46:36Like, how are we gonna get a bowling lane in here
46:38and do bowling?
46:39I'll tell you right now, the only thing
46:41in the Donald Trump impression from Make Some Noise
46:43that I fucked up, I didn't do the soft,
46:45he does the soft thing where he goes like,
46:47he's like, doing this is very free,
46:49and then he goes like, and Morgoth, who is Melkor?

47:16you'd have to speak to this person in your life.
47:18Oh my gosh, I'm so nervous.
47:20Because I don't know what to expect.
47:22Hopefully I can just stay afloat the entire time.
47:25We were looking for a balance of archetypes.
47:27So Brennan, hyper-competitive,
47:30you know that's gonna be interesting.
47:32Allie, impish, strategic,
47:35famous for undercutting Brennan in creative ways.
47:38Oscar, non-competitive.
47:41In a game like Second Place,
47:43my thinking was Oscar could very well accidentally win.
47:47Between the three of them, there was real alchemy.
47:50I just wanna say, whoever made the schedule
47:52to put pushups before this, I really thank you.
47:55The players are smart.
47:56They were, like, obviously kind of realizing
47:57the logical end point of the episode.
47:59I don't know if it'll make the cut,
48:00but there's a very funny moment
48:02where Brennan says something to the effect of, like,
48:04does this episode end with the Second Place winner winning?

48:55we thought any more mystery than that
48:57and it's not gonna be fun to watch them strategize.

49:09because we went to go pick it up and test it
49:12and then when we hit it, it was just plastic
49:16and it made no sound at all.
49:17So we had to, like, do an emergency gong rental
49:20with, like, a same-day gong delivery.
49:25Boom.
49:30It was the very first challenge
49:31of the very first episode we were shooting
49:33for the entire season.
49:34The gong was so loud that it messed up the LED lights
49:39that we have lining our set
49:41and we had to stop down.
49:42And we couldn't figure out for about 45 minutes
49:45how to get them back to the colors
49:46they were supposed to be.
49:47It was a very interesting and telling first gag
49:50of the season of how wild everything was going to be.

51:32before we shot this episode to bring Sam a gift.
51:35Oscar emailed me the night before and he was like,
51:37hey, I have a video that I wanna play.
51:39I had to wait until all the contestants were on the stage
51:42to, on my end, slide this video into the slideshow
51:46without Sam knowing.
51:48He thinks he knows what's on every slide
51:50because he's looked through it a thousand times.
51:52This was actually the very first time
51:53that we actually pulled one over on Sam on his own show.
51:56I think that the conceit of it originally was
51:59it'd be fun for them to get a good gift,
52:00learn the premise, and then fuck up the gift
52:02and make it worse.
52:03But it ended up being this really sweet thing
52:04where everyone just kinda got him
52:06a very sweet, wholesome gift.
