00:00We met an inspiring para-athlete who showed that nothing is impossible if you have determination and you believe in yourself.
00:09Let's get to know more of his shining story. Let's watch this.
00:14An inspiring story of success in spite of the challenges brought by RJ Villaveza.
00:20Despite his disability in his lower extremities, it was not a barrier for him to use his success in every field that he chose to pursue.
00:32Not long ago, RJ graduated from the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, Major in Marketing Management, from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines.
00:44Aside from this, he is also a para-athlete of Pasig City.
00:48Even though his body is not complete, it was not a barrier for him to become part of a para-swimming team.
00:56It is not easy to have this condition, but with the help of his family, he was able to overcome all the challenges.
01:04RJ Villaveza proved that true success is not measured in physical condition, but in the strength of the heart and mind.
01:14He showed that courage and determination are the key to achieving your dreams.
01:21We are joined live in the studio by RJ Villaveza.
01:25Hi, RJ. Good morning. Welcome to Rise and Shine Philippines.
01:29Good morning.
01:30And congratulations.
01:33You have already graduated from the Marketing course at the Philippine University of the Philippines, Polytechnic University of Pasig City.
01:40Yes.
01:41I also learned that it is your birthday today.
01:44Happy birthday.
01:45Your story is very inspiring.
01:47It was not a barrier for you to finish your studies.
01:52Tell us about your journey.
01:54For sure, it was a difficult journey, especially for you to go to your school.
02:00Yes.
02:01It was very challenging.
02:04P.U.Pitas, Pasig.
02:06It was a long journey.
02:08I had to cross the footbridge first.
02:12I had to cross the footbridge first to take a bus to go to P.U.P.
02:17It was not over yet.
02:20After I took the bus, I had to cross the footbridge again.
02:23It was a long journey.
02:25It was not over yet.
02:27After I took the bus to go to P.U.P., I had to take a bus to go to P.U.P.
02:32Wow.
02:33So, how many hours will it take for you to go to school from Pasig to P.U.P.?
02:39It took me 2 hours to cross the footbridge.
02:41It was a long journey.
02:44It took me 2 hours to cross the footbridge.
02:47You had to cross the footbridge again.
02:49Yes.
02:50So, this wake-up call will be more friendly to our transportation system.
02:55Yes.
02:56What are your recommendations that can be done?
03:00For sure, that would be of helpful advice to our authorities.
03:06If there are footbridges, there are PWDs like me,
03:12or if there are people with long legs who can't walk,
03:15or if they use wheelchairs,
03:17they cannot use footbridges.
03:20So, we should give them a lane to cross.
03:25If that is the only way for them to travel to their destination.
03:29Yes.
03:30I hope many people will watch this.
03:32It will be more friendly to our infrastructure and transportation system.
03:39I want to know, is marketing your first choice?
03:42Actually, it's not.
03:44It should be the accountancy.
03:46But, P.U.P. is a public school.
03:49So, there are a lot of slots.
03:51If you run out of slots, you won't have a chance to take that course.
03:56So, I thought that marketing is more broad.
03:59So, it's better.
04:00If I don't get it, I still have time.
04:02It's still related to business.
04:04Yes.
04:05And the fact that you finished P.U.P. means that you're really good, RJ.
04:09Alright.
04:10So, you're also a para-athlete.
04:12So, how did it happen that you became a swimmer?
04:15What's your story about this?
04:17Actually, I discovered that they are members of Para Swim ng Pasig.
04:24So, I went to the barangay and they saw me.
04:28Since I have orthopedic disability, they don't have a P.W.D. yet.
04:33So, I was invited by that member.
04:35So, I said, okay, I'll try.
04:37How was the training so far?
04:39At first, it was really hard.
04:42There were times that I almost drowned.
04:44But, I didn't think about it.
04:47I was like, oops, I stopped.
04:49But, I thought, okay, let's do that.
04:53Step in stones so that we can train.
04:56Every time there's a training, we just attend it.
04:59How long have you been training?
05:01It's been two years.
05:02Two years and you're about to compete in a national competition.
05:06Yes.
05:07What kind of competition is this?
05:08It's swimming.
05:09PNPG is the most associated competition.
05:15So, it's all over the Philippines, the P.W.D.
05:19It's different competitions.
05:20So, for me, it's swimming.
05:22Good luck.
05:24X number of years from now, you might join the Paralympics.
05:30In God's grace.
05:31What was the role of your family and your siblings?
05:35Because I understand that you're the youngest of five siblings.
05:38Yes.
05:39What kind of support did your family give you?
05:41My mom was always there.
05:44She was always there to support me.
05:46My eldest brother, since he's my mom and dad, he doesn't have a job anymore.
05:53He's a senior citizen.
05:54So, my eldest brother is the one who supports me financially.
05:58When I need money, he's the one who helps me.
06:01If I'm sick, he's the one who helps me.
06:03I'm lucky because I have my brother and my siblings who support me.
06:09And of course, your mom, Cecilia, and your dad, Arthur,
06:15are very proud of you because you finished your college.
06:20What is your message to our countrymen who are also going through trials
06:27and want to finish their studies?
06:30To those like me or to those who can't afford to study
06:37or who have limited resources to study and finish their studies,
06:42trust in God.
06:44He always provides.
06:46Because we don't realize that He's moving in our lives.
06:52We're in trouble.
06:54I have a problem. I can't do this.
06:56But He's there.
06:58When you pray, what do you ask from God?
07:02Success in life.
07:06So that I can thank my mom, my siblings, and everyone who helped me through my journey.
07:15Well, again, congratulations, RJ.
07:17And good luck in your upcoming competition.
07:20And have a happy, happy birthday.
07:23It's his birthday today. He just turned 25 today.
07:27And thank you for spending the morning of your birthday here at Riot and Shine Philippines.
07:31Again, congratulations, RJ Villaveza.
07:34Thank you very much.
07:35Keep shining and keep inspired.
07:37Thanks, RJ.
