00:00Hey, what is up guys, MKBHD here and this is the OnePlus 7, not the OnePlus 7 Pro, the
00:12OnePlus 7.
00:13It's that phone that you might have forgotten existed, but if you know anything about OnePlus
00:17phones, it became pretty familiar pretty quick.
00:19So we had the OnePlus 7 Pro already.
00:21I've raved about this phone and I'll link the full review below if you want to check
00:24it out.
00:25The OnePlus 7 is just like the OnePlus 6T, but refreshed for this year.
00:31So we already have the OnePlus 6.
00:33It got refreshed a couple months later, became the OnePlus 6T.
00:37So this is like a OnePlus 6TT.
00:40So it doesn't have any of the crazy features of the Pro.
00:42It's just a solid, steady phone, making all the safe moves for a lower price.
00:47It has a teardrop notch instead of the pop-up camera.
00:50It's their classic 1080p 60Hz OLED display they've been going with instead of the crazy
00:541440p 90Hz OLED of the Pro.
00:57It has their 20W Dash Charger instead of the crazy 30W warp charging.
01:02It has a regular vibration motor instead of the amazing one from the Pro.
01:05And it has a healthy 6 or 8GB of RAM instead of an absolutely massive up to 12.
01:11And it has one less camera.
01:12It drops the ultrawide and it's just the standard camera and the telephoto.
01:16I wish they'd kept the standard and the ultrawide, like the S10e, since I believe the ultrawide
01:22is way more useful and more fun than a telephoto.
01:24And I feel like everyone's realizing this in 2019, but that's not what they did.
01:28Still a 2X.
01:29So basically, you can think of this as either a stripped down OnePlus 7 Pro or what I think
01:33is more accurate, a refreshed OnePlus 6T.
01:37And what they've done is kept a lot of the things that people liked about the OnePlus
01:416T, which by the way, was a pretty good phone, won my phone of the year last year, and they've
01:46continued it in this one.
01:47So now it has the Snapdragon 855, still the newest chip.
01:50It's got that clean Oxygen OS with frequent software updates.
01:53And if you haven't already noticed, this one is running the Android Q beta.
01:56So that's why it's got a little bit of a different look and the different buttons and quick settings,
02:00etc.
02:01OnePlus phones are some of the only ones that can get the betas this early.
02:05The alert slider is still here.
02:07Awesome as always.
02:08Although for whatever reason, it's just a little bit smaller.
02:11Just a little bit.
02:12It has 6 or 8GB of RAM, like I mentioned.
02:15It's not 12, but it's still more than the Pixel, for example, can say right now.
02:19And then the front speaker grill and the speaker itself are a little bit bigger.
02:23It doesn't make a huge sound difference for music and videos, but low-key, it is a bigger
02:27target area to hold the phone up when making phone calls.
02:29So that's nice.
02:30Matter of fact, there are certain things to like more about the 7 than the 7 Pro for
02:35certain people.
02:36So, for example, it's a smaller phone.
02:38And plenty of people, including me, felt the 7 Pro is just a little bit on the big side.
02:43So the size of the 7 is more comfortable in the hand, more pocketable, easier to reach
02:47the tops and corners, things like that.
02:49There's not that many compact flagships, you know.
02:52And it's a flat display instead of a curved one that sort of bleeds over the edges.
02:56I talked about this in the 7 Pro review.
02:58I'm not the biggest fan of the curved glass and the extra glare and the accidental touches
03:03that'll come with that.
03:04So I'm pretty happy with the flat display.
03:07And then just little things like it's a little bit more likely to be water-resistant, thanks
03:11to the complete lack of moving parts, no pop-up camera, so no worries about durability.
03:16And of course, the phone is cheaper.
03:18It's at 500 pounds.
03:19So the OnePlus 6TT, aka OnePlus 7, I feel like if OnePlus only released this phone
03:26this year and no OnePlus 7 Pro, we'd all still kind of know this is obviously an incremental
03:31improvement over last year.
03:32But that wouldn't be such a bad thing because we already know the OnePlus 6T was already
03:37a great phone.
03:38But so many other things have happened in the phone world in just the past couple months
03:43that this relatively minor improvement just got really easy to fall under the radar.
03:47You can also get it to stand out or look a bit different if you want with a skin from
03:51our channel sponsor dbrand if you want to.
03:54Also since they don't make any matte black version of this phone this year, you got
03:56to take that upon yourself to get rid of fingerprints.
03:59And speaking of take it upon yourself, if you really do want to import this phone, you
04:02have to take it upon yourself and pay a little extra for the shipping to get it to your region
04:06and make sure the bands work with your carrier of choice and all that, which they usually
04:10do, but it's worth checking.
04:11So if you just search OnePlus 7 on Google or YouTube or anything like that, you will
04:17get bombarded with OnePlus 7 Pro photos and videos and articles and everything.
04:23It's so easy to forget that this OnePlus 7 exists.
04:29Why?
04:30Why did this phone fall so far under the radar?
04:32Well, there are two main reasons, one that I love and one that I don't love so much.
04:37To start with the one I don't love so much.
04:39This phone is so under the radar because that's where OnePlus put it.
04:44Like they're not launching this phone in the US.
04:46So it's focusing more heavily on Europe and Asia, but also OnePlus is actively moving
04:51their brand positioning from straight up budget to much more premium.
04:56And part of that is attacking the higher margin, higher price market.
04:59So not only is OnePlus 7 Pro a great phone, but that's what it's doing for them, legitimizing
05:05their more expensive products.
05:06So they're going from flagship killer to, hey, we also make a flagship, fine.
05:11But the other reason it's under the radar is because everyone else is kind of putting
05:16it there.
05:17The competition is putting it there.
05:18There has never been more competition at this sort of premium mid-tier price than there
05:24is right now.
05:26Asus Zenfone 6, Samsung A70, Redmi K20 Pro, Pixel 3a, Pocophone 2 is probably coming
05:34out soon.
05:35It's lit.
05:36I would say that the OnePlus 7 is an option to import for the price, but it's just that
05:42now.
05:43It's an option.
05:44It's not the clear front runner anymore.
05:45And it's got a whole bunch of very interesting competition in that little slot from like
05:49300 to $600.
05:51That being said, I do still really like this phone.
05:53There's a lot of things from that phone of the year that it takes and continues, and
05:57I can see myself using it every day.
05:59That's not something I say about every phone.
06:00So that says a lot about the OnePlus 7.
06:03And it also represents that shift in priorities for OnePlus as a company and just the markets
06:08in general.
06:09And it also represents a very crowded radar, which if you know what I know about competition,
06:14is a good thing for all of us.
06:16Thanks for watching.
06:17Catch you guys in the next one.
06:19Peace.
