00:00Hey what is up guys, MKBHD here and welcome to your first look at the iPhone 11 Pro and
00:11the iPhone 11 Pro Max.
00:13So the Roman numerals are gone and these are Apple's new flagship iPhones.
00:18So there is already a video up on the iPhone 11, the much less expensive iPhone for the
00:23masses that I think most people will be buying.
00:25That will be the first link below the like button.
00:26I go over all the new features and the more basics and things like that.
00:30These new phones are $9.99 and $10.99 to start and they go up from there so they're very
00:36expensive and they also put Pro in the name, which I have mixed feelings about.
00:42I get it, but I have mixed feelings about it.
00:44Okay so what is new?
00:46Well you can clearly see the design is already nearly identical to the XS and XS Max.
00:51Same sizes.
00:52So there are really four main things you need to know here.
00:55Display, battery, cameras, and the matte finish.
01:00Actually start with the matte finish since it's the most obvious.
01:02The glass on the back of these Pro iPhones is now this sort of frosted I would say.
01:07A very slight texture and a matte finish to it and I absolutely love it.
01:13And then the camera square weirdly goes back to glossy.
01:16So it's like the opposite of the cheaper iPhone 11 which is a glossy phone with a matte camera
01:21square.
01:22I just kind of wish the whole back of this phone was matte but maybe that's just me.
01:26They don't have a matte black but they do have a matte space grey along with a midnight
01:32green which is like this subtle dark green almost military camo type of green.
01:38And then there's a silver which looks very bright and gold which is the most familiar
01:42one.
01:43So yeah, matte dark grey.
01:44While it actually might scratch more easily, not sure yet, only time will tell.
01:49I got to use the phone and put it through its paces but matte dark grey I think, first
01:53impression, love that.
01:55Okay, so display.
01:56Now if you told me there was going to be a new iPhone Pro this year with a Pro display,
02:01I would just assume that you meant it was going to have 120 hertz high refresh rate
02:05ProMotion display.
02:07It does not have that but it is a bit of an improvement from the iPhone XS Max.
02:13So it's now even brighter bringing a peak brightness up to a ridiculous 1200 nits and
02:19creating a 2 million to 1 contrast ratio.
02:21So awesome numbers and it's the same resolution OLED, same sizes, same notch and everything.
02:27Very familiar looking display but it's now even more impressive for watching movies
02:31and editing photos and videos.
02:33That type of thing.
02:34It's a better screen.
02:353D touch is also now gone but I and I think many others weren't really using it much anyway
02:41and it's replaced with long presses instead of pressure sensitive presses.
02:46They're called haptic presses and they do pretty much all the same things.
02:49They're calling this new display Super Retina Display XDR.
02:53So if you're into name dropping, you can call it that.
02:57I'm just going to call it a brighter display.
03:00Then there's the battery.
03:01So on stage, Apple claimed 4 hours more battery life than the iPhone XS and on the 11 Pro
03:10Max, 5 hours more battery than the XS Max.
03:14That is a huge improvement and this really isn't coming from a much physically larger
03:18battery from the previous phone.
03:20A lot of these improvements are coming from the improved efficiency of the A13 Bionic
03:25chip inside.
03:26So not only is it a much more powerful chip like we said in the iPhone 11 video, but
03:30it is much more efficient too.
03:32That's where your battery gains will come from.
03:33I mean, of course, I will have to test these claims and put it to use and see how good
03:37it really is, but I'm really happy about those claims of much better battery life.
03:41And speaking of power, it now comes with an 18 watt fast charger in the box.
03:47Finally, iPhone Pro.
03:49It took a while.
03:50It took a pro phone to get that.
03:53But if you want that fast charger in the box, the iPhone 11, the cheaper one, doesn't
03:56get that.
03:57And it is USB type C to lightning.
03:59So yeah, step in the right direction.
04:02So that's the matte finish, the display, and the battery, which brings us to the one thing
04:07that they spent by far the most time on, and that's the new cameras.
04:11So triple cameras on the back here for the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max.
04:15It joins the three camera club.
04:17So one normal camera, one 2X telephoto, and one 120 degree ultra wide.
04:23And you can switch between the three of them in the app with the buttons if you want,
04:27or with a slider that sort of gracefully moves between all three focal lengths.
04:31And they made a big deal about how they wanted to match the quality as well as possible between
04:36these three cameras, which I really hope is true.
04:38That sounds great.
04:39You can do 4K 60fps video from all three cameras, which is dope.
04:45And you can choose to do portrait mode from either the telephoto or the normal camera,
04:49which is awesome.
04:50I'm definitely going to choose portrait mode from the standard primary camera way more
04:54often now that I'll have that choice.
04:56And yeah, we can just generally look forward to better images and better videos coming
05:00from computational photography, high dynamic range, and all sorts of image pipeline improvements
05:06that make this a quote pro level photo and video camera.
05:10And then there's a couple other little things I mentioned like in the last video, like better
05:13face ID and slightly improved water resistance, and a little bit more shadow resistant glass.
05:18But aside from that, that's basically it for the iPhone 11 Pro.
05:22So when you hear that, you don't necessarily think, oh, there's a whole ton of things that
05:26all stacked and added up to make this worthy of a pro level name, but it really just feels
05:31like they added the pro name because that's what's hot right now.
05:34Maybe that's a rant for a whole other video, but like all these other features they could
05:38have added that would have made me think it's fine to name it pro aren't there.
05:43Like there's no reverse wireless charging.
05:45There is no high refresh rate promotion display.
05:48There is no USB type C that would have been kind of pro.
05:51There is no Apple pencil support.
05:53There's no in display fingerprint reader.
05:55There isn't even any like special little bits of software that are tossed into the pro version
05:59to make it at least feel more pro, kind of like they did with iPad OS on the iPad Pro.
06:03Like if you're not going to do any of that, Apple, you know, would have at least felt a
06:06little more pro on the pro iPhone that you have a big camera focus on putting the camera
06:11settings in the camera app instead of keeping them buried separately in the settings app.
06:17Little things like that, possibly the most basic thing they could have done really here
06:20to show that they're thinking about pros that take all kinds of photos and videos.
06:25But that's not here either.
06:26So it's not like a, it's not a bad phone at all.
06:29Honestly, this is probably going to be one of the best performing phones of the whole
06:33year.
06:34Might have some of the best battery life of any phone this year.
06:37And on top of that, it'll probably have one of the best displays.
06:40And I just freaking love that matte finish, but I guess it's just my expectation of the
06:44word pro that makes me feel like I should expect a bit more on top of that.
06:49But I guess that's just me.
06:50That's just the way I feel.
06:51Bottom line here is this, to sell you this phone, Apple is banking on you wanting to
06:56take the best photos or videos of any phone.
07:01They want this to be the best camera in any smartphone.
07:03It's clear from the presentation and any ad you watch.
07:06And if you take a lot of videos, I think it will be.
07:09Now for photos, that's debatable.
07:10You know, the Pixel 4 is right around the corner.
07:12Huawei's new flagship is about to come out.
07:14So that's a tougher sell.
07:16But this, this pro iPhone upgrade is all about these cameras.
07:20And as a camera nerd, I do love that.
07:23Even if it looks like a kitchen stove on the corner of your phone.
