00:00Hey what's up guys, I'm KBHD here.
00:09So I've been using the iPhone 11 Pro for about 6, 7 months now, maybe a little longer
00:14than that.
00:15It doesn't sound like that long, but for this weird world I live in where I'm switching
00:20between smartphones all the time, testing all these different ones, that's kind of a long
00:23time actually for me to be using one phone.
00:27So I figured, you know what, let's do a longer term review.
00:34This is something I've seen a lot more actually on YouTube, and I really like it some, I'm
00:37jumping in.
00:38But the original reviews usually shot after 1 to 2 weeks of using the phone, and there's
00:43only so much you can pick up in that time, and inevitably after that, you know I try
00:48to tweet new things that I find, but there are new findings and new things that you
00:52learn about a phone that you want to share.
00:55You should follow me on Twitter if you want to see those things when I do share them,
00:58but that's what this is about.
00:59So why not take a second look at one of the phones that seems to come up all the time,
01:04months after it comes out.
01:06This is the iPhone 11 Pro, revisited, plus a look forward at iPhone 12.
01:11Ok, so one of the things you can get a pretty good idea of when the phone first comes out
01:15is build quality.
01:17Not just how it feels in the hand, but like really how well it's actually built, and iPhones
01:21have a pretty good track record, at least as of late, you know, of lasting a long time.
01:25But they're also glass, and glass is glass, and I've said it before but I'll say it again
01:30until it's no longer true, I don't use a case on my phone, never really have, so this phone
01:36just travels around just like this.
01:38So this iPhone's been in pockets, in gym bags with cleats, in backpacks, you know,
01:45in car cup holders, it gets tossed around a lot, and put in a lot of different places.
01:50Now the stainless steel on the sides has held up great, looks almost exactly like it did
01:55the day I got the phone, which you might expect, and the matte finish on the back has
01:59done a good job of hiding some of those micro-scratches, a lot better than a glossier phone would.
02:04But the front glass, not so much.
02:07Some phones get this worse than others, and from my experience, iPhones tend to get these
02:11micro-scratches more easily, but you can see on my iPhone, a lot of visible scratches
02:17all over the display, not so bad that it would actually interrupt the viewing experience
02:22like a crack, but they add up as the phone gets used more and more.
02:26Now I'm gonna say a lot of these are because I tend to put my phone face down on my desk
02:31and on counters and other places around me, and we know there's plenty of dust and random
02:35grit that can just happen to get under there and cut the glass of the phone, but it just
02:39seems like it's worse on the iPhone than other phones I've used, so I'm gonna try to get
02:44out of the laying the phone down, face down habit.
02:47Internal specs have held up pretty much perfectly, and this is what I'm talking about in the
02:50initial review when I say it's got tons of performance headroom, because out of the
02:54box, of course, every phone feels great, and the iPhone is one of the fastest feeling
02:58phones one, two, six months later, but that's sort of a trajectory for the two years, three
03:06years, four years later, when it's still one of the fastest feeling two, three, four year
03:10old phones.
03:11That's thanks to the A13 Bionic and four gigs of RAM, which don't look like huge specs on
03:15paper, but this phone is on pace to be doing just fine in four years.
03:20Okay, pop quiz.
03:21What's rule number one of buying a new piece of tech?
03:25Never buy a piece of tech like this based on the promise of future software updates
03:31to come.
03:32Never do that.
03:33Just buy it for what it is today, and if it happens to get better over the years, then
03:36that's a bonus.
03:38That I think especially applies to iPhones, because they never really add any crazy features
03:43like the way Android used to be when they would just change everything with a new software
03:47update, but it's mostly been minor tweaks and bug fixes.
03:50It's definitely more stable now.
03:51iOS 13, when it first launched, had a good amount of bugs and they've been ironing those
03:56out.
03:57I had this weird bug with Gmail attachments, but that's now fixed.
04:00Other than that, not too wild.
04:01In a way, it's kind of boring, actually, if you're hoping for something transformative
04:05and new in the software, but that's not really what I get my hopes up for on an iPhone.
04:09Now the announcements on stage and the way they talk so smoothly about how everything's
04:13so magical, they might fool you a little bit.
04:15Like remember the U1 chip in this phone?
04:20Remember that?
04:21About you could point your iPhone at another AirDrop device and it would just show up
04:25on the top of the list?
04:27That hasn't really ever materialized.
04:29Oh, and another big one was Deep Fusion.
04:33Remember Deep Fusion?
04:34There's a whole thing on stage about how a software update coming later to this new
04:38iPhone would bring Deep Fusion for improved detail and less noise and better sharpness
04:43in medium lighting.
04:45Now this wasn't low light, that would be night mode, and night mode's pretty great
04:48on this phone, but it's not that.
04:50And it wasn't high light either, it wasn't normal daytime photos, HDR and all that takes
04:54care of it great, but this was for medium light.
04:57Well the iPhone definitely got this software update and it definitely has Deep Fusion now,
05:03and I definitely can't tell the difference.
05:05And it doesn't even really tell you which photos were taken with Deep Fusion on and
05:09which ones are just regular photos.
05:12So yeah, I guess the point here is to say, at the end of the day, it's just good old
05:16familiar iOS running on the iPhone just like we all expected.
05:20There are some new features here and there, but again, not too many surprises here.
05:24And yes, the cameras are still really good.
05:26I've been taking great photos all the time in the months since this phone came out,
05:30and also pretty much every video you've seen on my socials, you know, Twitter or Instagram,
05:36and every time I go live on Instagram, they are with almost no exceptions all from the
05:41iPhone.
05:42iOS 13.2, they finally listened and put video resolution and frame rate controls in the
05:53camera app.
05:54They're a little hard to press, but you can go from 30 to 60 to 24 and 4K to HD, finally.
06:01Okay, a couple of the smaller things.
06:04Battery life has stayed really good.
06:07I switched actually to the smaller iPhone 11 Pro.
06:10I had the 11 Pro Max for almost my entire use, but I guess when I reviewed the iPhone
06:14SE, it kind of got me missing smaller iPhones for a while.
06:18So for the first time in a long time, I'm not using the absolute biggest available version
06:22of a phone.
06:23I'm using the smaller iPhone 11 Pro now.
06:25And I was wrong about 3D Touch.
06:28I miss 3D Touch.
06:303D Touch is one of those things that, you know, it was the pressure sensitivity of underneath
06:36the screen.
06:37Apple no longer makes any devices that support 3D Touch anymore.
06:40They've gone back to just Haptic Touch, which is just basically a long press and it's nowhere
06:45near as good.
06:463D Touch, while it wasn't necessarily taken advantage of by every single developer, it
06:50was actually a really well done and uniquely iPhone feature.
06:55It set them apart where Haptic Touch, it's basically just that long press and it's much
07:00slower than the pressure sensitivity was.
07:03So I'm not sure I wouldn't trade some extra thickness to get 3D Touch back, and I don't
07:08think I'm alone there.
07:09And then face ID, we're all super used to what face ID is by now, but it was supposed
07:13to get improvements and be better with this new iPhone.
07:16It's still really good, but I think it would feel magical.
07:20It would feel amazing if they could do just a couple of little things, namely shrinking
07:23the notch and making it work from more angles, like from this sideways angle, doesn't work
07:28when it's this far off.
07:30And when it's sideways and upside down and other angles, it's not quite as good.
07:34So actually it doesn't work at all when it's upside down.
07:36So face ID could be more magical, Tim, if you're listening, but actually, Tim, I hope
07:42you're not listening because let's use that as a way to segue into looking forward a bit
07:47at the iPhone 12.
07:49When you think about it, this phone can look a little bit dated, can feel a bit dated.
07:54It's got those rounded corners.
07:55It's got the biggest notch in any phone.
07:58It's still got the proprietary port at the bottom.
08:00It's still got a 60 Hertz screen.
08:02It is one of the fastest feeling phones with a 60 Hertz screen, thanks to the 120 Hertz
08:06touch refresh rate, but it is still 60 Hertz.
08:09And of course, no 5G.
08:10Now, iPhone 12 rumors floating around right now point to the boxier shape, similar to
08:15the iPad Pro, super looking forward to that.
08:185G should be added as well, and adding that LiDAR scanner from the iPad Pro, a classic
08:23case of the customer paying for a feature they may not ever use just because it comes
08:28built into the phone.
08:29But now there's a whole new lineup of iPhones planned at various price points, which are
08:34really interesting to me, all of which should have 5G.
08:37So I'm curious, which one of these do you think you would get?
08:40Look, today, iPhone 11 Pro, as a flagship, it's kind of in this weird place because Apple
08:45never updates their prices.
08:47This phone launched at $1,000, upgraded for $1,100, and it still costs $1,100.
08:55And until the day the next phone comes out in September or October, it will still cost
08:59$1,100.
09:01This phone was a pretty good buy when it came out, but if you can wait, if you've waited
09:06this long and you haven't bought a new iPhone yet, if you can keep waiting to the iPhone
09:1012, I think that's the move.
09:12I think that's the one to wait for.
09:14That's the one I'm excited about.
09:15That's the one I can't wait to upgrade to with that new shape.
09:19But until then, this has been a pretty damn good phone for the months it's been out.
09:24Until then, thanks for watching.
09:26Catch you guys in the next one.
09:27Peace.
