00:00All right, what's up guys, MKBHD here, and welcome back to another Ask MKBHD video.
00:15This is number 35.
00:16It's been a little while since I did one.
00:18We did one every month of the past two years or so.
00:22We got a whole bunch of Ask MKBHD episodes in, and now took a little break from it.
00:27But I'm deciding to bring it back, and we're doing a little something different this time.
00:30I asked on Twitter what you guys wanted to know, but I also asked if you could submit
00:33video questions.
00:34Figured we'd try that out, and it turned out to work out pretty well.
00:37In fact, it was actually trending on Twitter for a short period of time, which I don't
00:43think I've ever seen before for a Q&A, but it happened, and now there's plenty of questions,
00:47so let's get into answering them.
00:57Hey Marques, my question for you is, what do you do with all those phones once you
01:05get done reviewing them?
01:06Because, you know, they all go in the information drawer, never to be seen from or heard from
01:09again.
01:10And, you know, once you put your review out, your great videos, which are gold standard.
01:13I just want to know, what do you do with those phones?
01:15Do you ever give them to friends?
01:17Do you ever sell them?
01:18Do you just leave them in there?
01:19Do you ever pull one out and use it every now and again?
01:21Just want to know, you know, what you do with them after they're done.
01:23Yeah, I generally keep a lot of phones around, probably more than you would expect.
01:27So the drawer you've seen in probably studio tours and videos in the past, I usually keep
01:32one and then another generation of each phone that I review.
01:36So right now we have the Galaxy S10, I still have Galaxy S9s and S9 pluses.
01:41We have iPhone XS Max and iPhone XS, I still have iPhone Xs.
01:46I don't really usually go back too far before that, so they'll either end up being recycled,
01:50donated, given away, sold, etc.
01:53I buy a lot of phones, we don't have to keep all of them.
01:56Hey Marques, this is Stetson.
01:57Landscape.
01:58In your smartphone awards video 2018, you gave the best budget phone award to the Pocophone
02:04F1.
02:05Makes sense, great phone, packing a lot for $300.
02:09But you can currently get a Pixel 2 for around $256 unlocked on Swappa.
02:15My question for you, would you go with a brand new budget phone like a Pocophone F1,
02:21or would you go with a used flagship phone like the Google Pixel 2?
02:26Interested to hear your thoughts.
02:27Yeah.
02:28Great question, I'm glad you asked this.
02:30And this is a pretty complicated one because it actually changes based on the phone you're
02:34talking about.
02:35But this is an age-old question.
02:36Do you buy a new budget phone for, you know, let's say the dollar amount is $300, or do
02:42you buy a two or three-year-old flagship that has come down in price to that budget
02:49phone's price?
02:50And I'd say the answer really depends on what you want in a phone.
02:53You gotta know what you want.
02:54That's usually the answer.
02:55If you want software updates for the next couple years, your best bet is buying a new
02:58budget phone because that older phone is less likely to get more software updates.
03:03If you're trying to get a great camera, you're probably gonna get that out of a high-end
03:07flagship that's come down in price instead of buying a new budget phone.
03:10I think generally for most people, you can get more bang for your buck out of a former
03:14flagship that's come down in price because then you're not sacrificing as much.
03:17And what you usually see is a worse camera and worse build quality in budget phones.
03:22That's just where they save their money.
03:24But a lot of people have just a great time on either.
03:26So it depends on what you want.
03:27Hey MKBHD, my name is Shahid and I'm from Pakistan.
03:31My question is, which phone would you pick between the Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X?
03:36For your personal use, of course.
03:38Thank you.
03:39Question, question of the hour.
03:41Galaxy Fold, which folds inward and protects the big folding screen or Huawei Mate X, which
03:46folds out but has a way cooler looking outside.
03:50I'll say this with a disclaimer that I have not actually played with a Mate X yet.
03:54Some people have.
03:55I've watched videos of it, but I've only actually used the Galaxy Fold.
03:58And so from my experience, when I see a Huawei Mate X, it looks way cooler.
04:03And so I feel like I'm biased towards that.
04:06And then, of course, we had all the durability issues with the Galaxy Fold.
04:09So it's kind of hard to say.
04:10I just know I'm really excited to get my hands on the Huawei Mate X.
04:13That's going to be one that I think changes a lot of people's minds about foldable phones,
04:16if it turns out well.
04:17Hi MKBHD.
04:19So I'm curious, how do you kind of juggle between your life as a professional Frisbee
04:25player and a YouTube reviewer?
04:27I'm just curious.
04:29First of all, nice shirt.
04:30So for those who are new or might not know, I've been playing Ultimate Frisbee for a
04:35long time and I've been playing for the pro team in New York called New York Empire for
04:40the last two years.
04:41So our season just started a couple of weeks ago.
04:44So basically every weekend and during practices during the week, I have that.
04:48And for me, the timing actually has sort of worked out this way ever since I started playing.
04:52Frisbee is mostly on weekends, like tournaments are on weekends, for the pro team, games are
04:57on weekends.
04:58We have a practice during the week at night.
05:00So that's after work.
05:01So as far as overlap, there isn't a whole lot of that.
05:04I've always said the toughest decision I'd have to make would be between like a big tech
05:07event and a big Ultimate tournament or a game or something like that.
05:11Luckily, that doesn't overlap pretty much ever.
05:13Hey MKBHD, we're the OnePlus US team coming to you live from a very special device.
05:20And we're wondering what your expectations are for the OnePlus 7 Pro.
05:29I don't think I can say that.
05:30Alright, serious question for you.
05:32Would you rather your first born child's first words be, hey, what's up guys?
05:37Or remember to like and subscribe if you want to see more videos like this one.
05:41Wow, I'd be very impressed if those were the first words.
05:44That is a very serious question though.
05:45I think I would say I would rather them, I'd rather the first words be, hey, what is up
05:51guys?
05:52That's fine, right?
05:53That's a couple reasonable words to string together in a row.
05:56I'd be cool with that.
05:57Hey MKBHD, who was your favorite YouTuber back when you started?
06:01And who's your favorite now?
06:03My favorite YouTuber when I started would have to be sort of the, I think the big, like
06:08the big three of tech, OG tech YouTube.
06:13And those were John Rettinger, John Forlakers, Sojournos Best, Mark Watson and Chris Pirillo,
06:20all of whom are still making tech videos to this day.
06:23But I have to give my inspiration or my credit towards them because they literally
06:26paved the way of giving the idea that you could even make tech videos on YouTube a thing.
06:32So thanks to them for that.
06:33My favorite YouTuber right now actually is probably, I'm going to guess none of you
06:36are going to know this, is he does sketches, Caleb City.
06:39I'll link his channel right here.
06:41He just literally does all these sketches with himself and his friend, one or two people,
06:45but they are absolutely hilarious.
06:48So go check out his channel, subscribe.
06:49I'll put a link below.
06:50Hey Marques, here's a question for you.
06:52What would you do if YouTube suddenly ceased to exist?
06:55If it just stopped existing tomorrow, what would you personally be doing?
07:00Well, well, it's the age old question.
07:03If you weren't a YouTuber, what would you be?
07:04Well, actually, it's a little different.
07:05YouTube does exist, but then it just suddenly stops existing.
07:09That's a little more dramatic.
07:11I don't really know what I would do.
07:13I guess this is the part where I'd have to fall back on my college education and use
07:17my business degree and my marketing expertise to find a way to do a job with that related.
07:23I think fun fact is before I got into really doing a lot of YouTube, or it was actually
07:28as I was doing a lot of YouTube, but I was studying business and marketing because I
07:32kind of imagined my future career path to be that guy who works at a company that works
07:39with YouTubers.
07:40Like I'd be the marketing manager of a tech company that would be working with YouTubers
07:45to send them products and make products better.
07:47So I guess to answer your question, I could still probably do that somewhere today.
07:51But yeah, if YouTube just stopped existing pretty dramatically, I also think some other
07:56video service would just bubble up to replace YouTube and fill in the footprints it left
08:02behind.
08:03Hey Marcus.
08:04You said, so it's been two years since Google Home and other smart speakers have been released.
08:08What's your opinion about them two years later and do you still use them?
08:13That's well done.
08:15Well done.
08:16So yes, I do have a Google Home.
08:18I have a Google Home Max here in the studio and I have a Google Home Max at home.
08:22It's not my alarm clock.
08:23It's too loud to do that, but I do use it to ask questions pretty regularly.
08:27I set timers with it.
08:29I ask what the weather's going to be pretty often with it.
08:31I ask it like the random trivia questions, like how many legs does a horse have?
08:35Try it yourself.
08:36It's great.
08:37I think the next sort of evolution of that, that we're going to start seeing more is screens
08:40on them.
08:41We've seen this with Alexa stuff and we're probably going to see this rumored Google
08:44Home Max with a screen on it.
08:47Just having a UI for it to be able to show you stuff is pretty cool.
08:49But yeah, home stuff, home assistants are definitely alive and well.
08:53What do you think will be the next biggest piece of tech for the next decade?
08:58You know, 2000s had MP3 players, 2010s had mobile phones.
09:02What do you think it's going to be for the 2020s?
09:06I hope he's not getting in trouble for doing this video on the job at Best Buy.
09:10So that's a big question.
09:11So this two decades ago, we had MP3 players.
09:13They blew up.
09:14Then this last past decade, we got mobile phones.
09:17If I'm being honest, I think the next decade is probably going to be mobile phones too.
09:21And then wearable tech will start to be more of a big thing in the future.
09:25But I've been pretty firm that I think mobile phones, this thing that we pick up and use
09:30and then put down, is like the form factor that we're going to have for the near future.
09:35That's just me.
09:36Maybe I'm not future thinking enough, but that's the way I see it.
09:38Hey Marques, it's John.
09:40With this question, you might be getting it a lot, I don't know.
09:43But being that the Galaxy Fold has been released, when do you think Apple will begin producing
09:48or even release a foldable iPhone?
09:51I'm a huge Apple fan.
09:52I'm not sure if I would like to see that, but it would be really interesting.
09:56What do you think?
09:57Yeah, foldable iPhone or foldable iPad?
10:00That's the question.
10:01So I guess the way I see it, Apple's always had a... not always.
10:05I'll take that back.
10:06They haven't always had this.
10:07But lately, they've had what you call a late mover advantage in a lot of technologies.
10:12They don't have to be first to the bleeding edge of stuff, but when they do choose to
10:16update something or hop on board the new tech, they know it's proven, the mistakes have been
10:21made by the first movers, and they can get it right.
10:23So this is really a perfect example of that with folding phones.
10:26The Samsungs and Huaweis of the world are the first movers, they call themselves the
10:32pioneers and the innovators, but that's what they're doing.
10:34They're using their first mover advantage and their supply chain to try to make a splash.
10:39And they'll make their mistakes.
10:40And clearly, some mistakes have been made already with them.
10:43But in the near future or the far future, if Apple sees that it's worth its potential,
10:47they'll swoop in and they'll get it right, in theory.
10:50So how long into the future are folding phones really going to be a thing before Apple decides
10:55to make a folding iPhone?
10:58Definitely not iPhone 11, probably not iPhone 12.
11:01I could start to see in the next three to five years, that perhaps starting to get tidied
11:07up.
11:08And maybe there's a foldable version of the phone, but I don't think it's going to be
11:10anytime soon.
11:11Hey Marques, just wanting to know how you got started in Ultimate Frisbee and how that
11:15even became an interest for you?
11:17Good question.
11:18I think my origin story for Ultimate might not be the same as many others.
11:21So I went to Columbia High School in New Jersey.
11:23And if you know a lot about the history of Ultimate, that name might sound familiar because
11:27if you go to the Wikipedia page for Ultimate Frisbee and look up where the sport was invented,
11:33the answer is in 1968, Ultimate Frisbee was invented by students at Columbia High School
11:38in New Jersey.
11:39So the sport's kind of had a rich tradition at that high school and there's a JV team
11:44and a varsity team.
11:45So when I was in middle school, I knew that that high school had a Frisbee team and I
11:49knew I wanted to play.
11:50So I instantly, when I first got there, tried out for it, played on the JV team for a bit
11:54and then graduated to the varsity team.
11:57There were always tournaments, there were always traveling.
11:59It felt like a real varsity sport, even though technically at that time, it wasn't really one.
12:03So yeah, for me, it started because there's a rich history of it in New Jersey.
12:08I think for a lot of people, they, you know, they pick it up in college or they discover
12:11it in their neighborhood or at a park or something like that.
12:14But that's my OG Ultimate story.
12:17It's pretty loud in the hallway.
12:19But that's where I'm going to end it.
12:20Thank you for your questions.
12:21I think this was fun to do the video style.
12:23I think we'll probably do that more in the future.
12:25Stay tuned on Twitter for when I ask for when we do these and you can submit your questions there.
12:29And of course, as always, the links to anything I talk about that are important or that were
12:33in the video are below.
12:35But that's basically it.
12:36Thanks for watching.
12:37Catch you guys in the next one.
12:39Peace.
